May 2, 2010I bought a new SD card which I intend to put some MP3s on - except that I can't write to it because it tells me the destination is Read Only. No-probs thinks I: I'll just reformat it.
"Error creating file system: helper exited with exit code 1: cannot open /dev/mmcblk0p1: Read-only file system"
Various chmod commands all result in Read-only file system. I tried umount then mount commands, but it couldn't find it to mount once I'd unmounted it using the same /media/ file path (I assume it's the only one).

Oct 7, 2010We are running into issues with a File Upload script written in PHP. We can upload files without issues except with .*x files (such as .docx) We are getting permission denied errors. The error occurs when we use move upload file, to the new directory within our PHP app. If we give the uploads folder 777 access, it works fine without error. I dont like that. So I set it to 775 (Also dont like this), but it didnt work until I gave group ownership to www-data (I really dont like this)
This issue only happens on our production server, which is Ubuntu 9.04, running Apache2.2 and PHP5 will all the newest updates. We also have all MIME's configured, and are able to download the file from Apache without error. The first thing we noticed before the file permissions error, was that the MIME type changed to .zip when we used mime content type function. But yet using the FILES array, it still showed .docx.
Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 SSD Error: Read-only File System: '/target/bin'
Nov 28, 2010I'm having real issues installing 10.04 to an SSD - I had one SSD fail, and have replaced it with a brand new one, but the 10.04 installer fails at beginning to write files to the disk with this error:
[Errno 30] Read-only file system: '/target/bin'.
Curiously:
* Windows XP will install to this SSD with no issues
* I can install 10.04 to a standard HDD with no errors.
What is happening that is stopping me from installing 10.04 to this drive? I am fairly sure that there is no issue with the SSD (I have two brand new, identical OCZ Vertex II 60gb drives which both encounter this error.)
I have tried partitioning the drive using gparted on another machine, leaving 5mb free at the start of the drive, and having a single partition for /, and a 1gb swap partition. "Round to cylinders" was unchecked. The partitioning was successful, and the drives can be mounted on my other machine, but the 10.04 installer encounters the same error.

Jan 4, 2011I regularly rsync directories to an external usb drive. Recently I've started getting errors which look:
blah blah:Read-only file system (30)
The external usb drive has two partitions (ext3 and fat32) and I rsync to the ext3 one. The rsync command is
rsync -ahi --delete /home/mike/some_dir /media/usb_drive
People have reported this error with faulty usb cables but everything was working fine until recently so it seem unlikely a usb cable would suddenly wear off.

Nov 17, 2010I have a bluetooth headset for a cellphone, which I would like to use with my Ubuntu computers. I'm currently trying to do this with a computer running Jaunty. I have successfully paired the headset with the computer. But when I try to send an audio file to the headset, I get the "Sending files via Bluetooth dialogue box, immediately followed by the error message:
Quote: org.openobex.Error.NotSupported and no file transfer occurs. I am able to do other Bluetooth operations with other devices - eg I can send/receive files between the computer and my cellphone. It just seems to me that using a Bluetooth cellphone headset is not supported, or that I am doing something wrong.
UPDATE: I just tried doing this with my other machine running 10.04, with similar results. It looks momentarily like it's going to transfer the file, then reports that "an unknown error occurred". Is it just not possible to use bluetooth headsets for cellphones with Ubuntu computers? That doesn't seem very likely: when the computer detects the headset, it reports it as being a "headset". So why won't it work? What am I doing wrong?

Ubuntu :: Blue Screen Error Always Occurs?
Feb 8, 2011I esablished a dual boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu on separate partitions. Then, as I realised that Windows 7 was rubbish and Ubuntu annoyed me by losing wireless connectivity after an update, I decided to go back to Windows XP for a while. So I did what I probably shouldn't have done, and formatted the partition (or so I thought) with Ubuntu on, using Windows.
Now, on booting up the system, all I can get is the Grub Rescue prompt and nothing in the Bios menus seems to be of any assistance.
I've tried booting XP from a CD, but a blue screen error always occurs at the same point in the installation. I wonder if I should make a CD/external drive with Ubuntu on, reinstall it, and go from there?

Apr 5, 2010I am running Linux Mint 8 on my Dell Precision 350 computer. Every so often (sometimes every few hours, sometimes every few days, it appears to be random) my desktop will crash and display the message:
"70822.286411 EXT4fs error (device sda1): ext4_ext_check_inode: bad header/extent in inode #139281: invalid magic - magic 800c, entries 121, max 3278020), depth 171(171)"
This is displayed several times on all of the terminals, but with different numbers each time. When this happens, typing any commands in the terminal result in the error message being displayed again. When I restart after this happens, linux generally displays "Give root password for maintenance (or type control-D to continue):" and I give the root password. Running "fsck /dev/sda1" seems to fix this problem for the next boot, but then it will come back in either a few hours or a few days. Reinstalling the distro does not work, as I have already tried this. I suspect a hard disk error, but before I run out and buy and install a new hard disk, I wanted to know if maybe there is some way to fix this through software.
