Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 SSD Error: Read-only File System: '/target/bin'

Nov 28, 2010

I'm having real issues installing 10.04 to an SSD - I had one SSD fail, and have replaced it with a brand new one, but the 10.04 installer fails at beginning to write files to the disk with this error:

[Errno 30] Read-only file system: '/target/bin'.

Curiously:

* Windows XP will install to this SSD with no issues

* I can install 10.04 to a standard HDD with no errors.

What is happening that is stopping me from installing 10.04 to this drive? I am fairly sure that there is no issue with the SSD (I have two brand new, identical OCZ Vertex II 60gb drives which both encounter this error.)

I have tried partitioning the drive using gparted on another machine, leaving 5mb free at the start of the drive, and having a single partition for /, and a 1gb swap partition. "Round to cylinders" was unchecked. The partitioning was successful, and the drives can be mounted on my other machine, but the 10.04 installer encounters the same error.

Ubuntu :: Error Creating File System: Helper Exited With Exit Code 1: Cannot Open /dev/mmcblk0p1: Read-only File System

May 2, 2010

I bought a new SD card which I intend to put some MP3s on - except that I can't write to it because it tells me the destination is Read Only. No-probs thinks I: I'll just reformat it.

"Error creating file system: helper exited with exit code 1: cannot open /dev/mmcblk0p1: Read-only file system"

Various chmod commands all result in Read-only file system. I tried umount then mount commands, but it couldn't find it to mount once I'd unmounted it using the same /media/ file path (I assume it's the only one).

General :: Rsync Error - Read-only File System - 30

Jan 4, 2011

I regularly rsync directories to an external usb drive. Recently I've started getting errors which look:
blah blah:Read-only file system (30)

The external usb drive has two partitions (ext3 and fat32) and I rsync to the ext3 one. The rsync command is
rsync -ahi --delete /home/mike/some_dir /media/usb_drive

People have reported this error with faulty usb cables but everything was working fine until recently so it seem unlikely a usb cable would suddenly wear off.

Ubuntu Installation :: Error Message: The Grub Package Failed To Install Into /target

Oct 2, 2010

I was trying to install ubuntu 9.10 as a dual boot system with windows and I recieved this error message: The Grub package failed to install into /target/. Without the Grub boot loader, the installed system will not boot

This Error comes up after 94% of the install. I also cannot seem to get the side by side install option to work (sometimes this option appears sometimes it does not) I am not sure but I beleive seome of the install files have been placed on the hard drive because I only get the option now to install on the hard drive and totally wipe clean or the emptiest hard drive. So how would I get the possible Ubuntu install off the Hard drive. I have used this CD to Install before it has no scratches therefore should work. Also If I have Win Xp on a Raid 0 will the Ubuntu 9.10 install ?

Debian Installation :: "GRUB Read Error Operating System Not Found" In Old Hardware

Apr 1, 2011

I am trying to install debian 6.0.1a in an old COMPAQ 1255 (amd-k6, 160 MB ram, 4.3 Gbyte AT33.33 MB/s Cyl 6568 Heads 6 bytes per sector 512 HardDisk). I am using the netinstall CD_ROM , I just want the base system (the last option in the list you are presented) I got installed debian 5.0.8 , base package plus fluxbox plus a light browser plus a light pdfviewer, and I got really surprised what an useful system I got from such and old hardware.

With 6.0.1a everything goes well during the install process, the net is recognized, also the disk, formatting an partitions are created, apt-get configured, repositories contacted, etc. I only select base system (may be I am confused with the name, it is the last option in the list), and I select the install using the whole hard disk (i also tryed the install using a separated home partition but I had the same problem). I am installing the system in spanish, using latinamerican keyboard layout.

the installer then asks to take away the CD-ROM, I do, I reboot and then I got "GRUB Read Error Operating System not found". Just before the message, the machine search the floppy. If I press a key, I got the same behaviour, noise in the floppy, error message.

I can boot the CD_ROM in rescue mode, and I can select /dev/hda1 and get a console. i can do ls and cd and navigate the tree. It looks like everything is there, the /etc, the /home, all of the directories. if I do fdisk /dev/hda i got a warning because dos compatible mode is deprecated with option p of fdisk i got:

15 heads, 63 sectors/track 8944 cylinders. (different of the specifications?)
device boot Id system
/dev/hda1 * 83 Linux

[code].....

i can do less grub.cfg, and I got lot of information. I think this part could be relevant to the problem

insmod part_msdos
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,msdos1)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid

Programming :: Python: Read Through Multiple Links To Get To The Target?

May 28, 2010

say you've got the following file structure:

Code:
ls -l *
lrwxrwxrwx 1 briank cg 1 2010-05-28 15:23 a -> b
lrwxrwxrwx 1 briank cg 3 2010-05-28 15:23 b -> d/c
d:
total 0
-rw-rw-r-- 1 briank cg 0 2010-05-28 15:23 c
code....

if I use python's os.readlink on 'b', it reports what I want, which is that it points to 'c'.
however, if I os.readlink('a'), it reports that 'a' points to 'b', which is true, but then 'b' points to 'c'.... so really, when I ask for 'a', I will eventually get 'c', but python isn't reporting that.

I know I can do an if test - if os.islink(os.readlink('a')): blah blah, but is there a more built-in or one-liner way of doing this? I'm looking to get to the last file in a list of symlinks, i.e. the regular file that they all point to.
