Installed Ubuntu 10.10 and it works very well except I cant format cd or dvds. I am using the disk utility program in administration and keep getting the following error:
Error creating file system: helper exited with exit code 1: Error calling fsync(2) on /dev/sr0: Input/output error
I have tried mounting and unmounting - makes no difference.
I bought a new SD card which I intend to put some MP3s on - except that I can't write to it because it tells me the destination is Read Only. No-probs thinks I: I'll just reformat it.
"Error creating file system: helper exited with exit code 1: cannot open /dev/mmcblk0p1: Read-only file system"
Various chmod commands all result in Read-only file system. I tried umount then mount commands, but it couldn't find it to mount once I'd unmounted it using the same /media/ file path (I assume it's the only one).
i have 2 dvds and i want to create an iso image out of it. is there any way to do that?

Recently I found the commands to use dvdbackup, and it worked perfectly. I can copy my DVDs easily and flawlessly. Really happy about that. Is there a command-line way of creating DVDs? I've got to say that using the terminal has been the most reliable and robust for me. Is there a way to create DVDs via the terminal? I'm running Ubuntu 8.1 on a Dell laptop.

I have two files first one is called client, second one is called server I am using named pipes to sent a message from client to the other file called server in client I used mknod() to create the two named pipes,one for read,one for write and created new thread in client using fork() spawned a child process that executed the server file both named pipes are opened the client file got the message from the user and sent it through the named pipes to the server file when the server receives the message , it needs to verfify it is correct in the server file, a local file descriptor is created to read and send this verifing message when it is not correct but I am getting an OPEN() error when I tried to open this shared local array buff and attach it to a file descriptor where the message is kept why do I get this error in server file

I downloaded 64-bit fedora12 iso DVD image and created a DVD. When I tried to boot, the CD does not boot. I checked the documentation to see whether book.iso or any other file needs to be copied along with. My question is:
- What are the files I need to copy to a DVD for the DVD to boot up straight up from the DVD...?
- If not, is there another way to get this fresh installation done.
I have 32-bit Fedora 11 installed in a machine, but need 64-Fedora to do some testing, before going with RH Linux.
Handbrake defaults to .mp4 but can also rip to .mkv. I'm not sure which to use. I like to rip CDs to .flac if that gives you any idea of what I'm trying to achieve.

My desktop is Ubuntu and I run most from there, but I want to back up my MacBook and linux box on the same external hard drive. Seems there are some (paid) apps for Mac that will mount NTFS but I'm wondering if there is just a shared files ystem that will work for both.

I have my original test version of sled11 which I installed when it was first released. I managed to install the required files for multimedia formats and everything works fine. The system has updated as updates have been released via the evaluation update code quite happily. I liked it and decided to get a sled11 license and install on my main workstation. About a month has passed since the test install and my fresh licensed install and I accepted all the updates on install. When I install the multimedia apps, only kaffeine will read multimedia dvds. Nautilus, brasero and totem say it is a restricted format and refuse to read it. What to look for?

My machine will stay up for long periods of time, or sometimes only a few mins, also it doesn't seem related to just using a particular program. As you can imagine this is leading to a bag of woes. After reading on a forum about logs I went to /var/log and in the system log found the following entry . . .
"Jan 10 18:46:10 jon-desktop kernel: [ 92.718896] Either the lower file is not in a valid eCryptfs format, or the key could not be retrieved. Plaintext passthrough mode is not enabled; returning -EIO"
This is repeated multiple times and having checked after a few crashes seems to be the central problem. Being specific about the crashes, they freeze the entire system. Can't ctl-alt-del and sound loops, have to hard reset. I have a feeling that when I first installed Ubuntu 9.10 I selected to use an encrypted file system but have a feeling that I didn't set it up correctly. Not sure exactly what I didn't do but I seem to remember it was to do with generating a passphrase. So . . .
1) What is this error from my logs?
2) Is it linked to me not setting up the encrypted filesystem correctly?
3) Is there a way to check the settings / sort them out properly?
4) Is there documentation for my dullard state which can aid me in this, or is it quite simple?
I just bought a USB flash drive. Whenever i click it to open its contents it gives me the error " Unable to mount USB20FD " then under that it says "Error creating moint point: No such file or directory " (btw it does say moint point and not mount point, which is kind of weird.i can use the flash drive i just bought.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the ISO from the Ubuntu site. I can run it from the CD without any problems however, when I install it, it freezes. I am installing on a 2nd hard drive in my computer. It gets up to the point of "Creating ext4 file system for / in partition #1 of SCSI1 (0,1,0)(sdb)... I've tried deleting the partition and creating one by myself with no prevail. I am going to school for computer networking and my counselor told me that it'd be a good idea to learn the Linux OS for my major.

I have been sent some file sI need to open but they are in .pub format. Having them sent in another format is not an option. I need to open them on Linux. I'm trying to create an iso file in a terminal with the following command:
$cat /dev/sr0 > nameofdisk.iso
I get the following error

I already checked and my optical drive is indeed /dev/sr0. I've hunted google a few hours trying to figure it out. Does anyone know why I'd be getting this error?

I was connected remotely using Putty, doing some stuff, and all of the sudden some commands, like "ls" stopped working, giving a "file or command not found" type of message. View 3 Replies View RelatedI tried to install Win 7 from the DVD and it didn't work at first because my Ubuntu is not in NTFS which is require for Win 7 to start installing. But the Win 7 doesn't have the option to format the harddrive for me so I went back to Ubuntu to format it.

The storage drive in the screenshot below the one I want to format but if I format that while I am running the Ubuntu OS, what will happen? Can someone guide me what to do? I can see there are two seperate virtual drives in that one 320GB SATAII harddrive. I want to erase the one with the more space because I'll install the Win 7 on it since it requires 15GB+ space. openSUSE-11.3-DVD-i586.iso
openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso
openSUSE-11.3-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso
Being paranoid, I created iso-files from the burnt DVD-R and the two burnt CD-R to verify integrity.
The iso-file of the DVD-R was identical to the downloaded image. Both iso-files created from the CD-R were different in size.
The original size of openSUSE-11.3-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso is 719.323.136 Bytes.
I only got 718.938.112 Bytes when recreating an ISO-file from my CD-R.
The CD-R is from Sony. When the length of my ISO-file doesn't correspond to the downloaded one, the checksum file verification doesn't work.
