Apr 9, 2011i found in some thread that Swap space wasnt really necessary for RAM of over 1 GB, and true to it, i wasnt using using much of my 4GB allocated for swap ever so i deleted it ( dunno if it was wise, but didnt face any problems when i first deleted). today, i found out from another thread on a way to extend the size of /home directory if it was on a seperate mountpoint, and if space was available on my hard disk.
i just had 1 GB allocated to home directory and it used to fill up quite rapidly (due to cache from google chrome). I made a backup of my home directory contents, and i deleted the /home partition through the Disk utility. Somehow i couldnt combine the two unallocated spaces under a single partition why is that? (My plan was to combine that 1GB and the 4GB from the earlier swap space to use a 5GB home partition.) then i restarted and ever since i have been seeing the Grub error,and am not able to access my operating systems normally. GRUB Loading stage 1.5 Grub loading, please wait Error 15 . i am attaching the results.txt from my system obtained by booting through a liveCD. Something tells me that the way ive been following has been a roundabout one or a very inefficient one. how can i restore my system to normalcy

I immediately removed windows 7 started, and installed UNR 10.04.It has a 250GB hard drive, which I decided to partition, so that I can keep all my stuff on the new partition, and then a fresh format or install of the OS would be easier.After struggling to take ownership of my own damn partition after creating it and mounting it, I discovered a rather interesting problem. I KNOW the partition is empty, but when I right click and go to properties, it says that 10GB is already used? This is rather confusing to me

Suppose I install an application from a package manager , I really do not understand where the path is ...Supose I want to store certain new applications in the spare partition , how do I tell the system? Also while installing it doesnt give a choice regarding the path ...All I see is a couple of files exracted and when it completes , it sits on the menu neatly. From a storage perspective how do you gain control? Say in Win , normally any package will ask for the path which you can customize..How do you plan the storage of files in Linux?

Now my Ubuntu Partition doesn't boot up correctly, something about the graphic system, video system, etc. all being unconfigured. (I'll get the exact error later.) All I can use is the command line.can I install Ubuntu over my old Ubuntu partition without messing up rebooting/GRUB and all that?

The ubuntu that I am running right now is on a partition that is too small. I need to either expand it to include the other ubuntu partition or reinstall 10.10 and copy my existing partition to it. Can this be down?
I have this version working the way I like it and have tried 11.04 and am holding of for now. Still the fact remains that my working copy is on a partition that is really too small I only have 2 gig free space on a drive that is a 500gig.

1) At Sys Ananysis I get; The partitioning on disk /dev/sda is not readable by partitioning tool parted... You can use the partitions on disk /dev/sda/ as they are. You can format and asign mount points on them. But you can not add, edit, resize, or removefrom that disk with this tool. I click OK
2) New Installation, Use Auto Config
3) Time Zone
4) KDE (same results with Gnome)
5) Partition Based. I go to Create Partition Setup.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 Installation To Empty 2GB Partition
Mar 26, 2010I gave upon 11.3 M4.Tried installation by text mode but there's another screen showing various USB devices status superimposing on the Linux text install. Returned to Live installation via Live CD. Installation completed > restart >autoconfig failed. Tried live installation again but Suse kept suggesting installing into one of the empty 2 Gb partitions. Also had problems with Gparted Live 0.5.1-1 CD because somehow the keys froze. Had to replace it with 0.5.2-1. I am installing 11.2 on a laptop but right now I am stuck with frozen "Creating cache files for fontconfig". This has taken over an hour and nothing seems to be happening. I have successfully installed openSUSE 11.2 on an older laptop and a desktop. Also experienced installing Windows 7, Ubuntu and PC-BSD on both types of machines.

Mar 21, 2010I have a server running Fedora 6, which I wish to upgrade to Centos 5.4. This will be a lengthy switch over because of all of the apps I need to convert etc. As a precaution, I would like to keep my old Fedora running as multiboot. I have a boot partition, a fedora partition (root), and an empty partition for Centos.
Can I run the Centos installer and direct it to install onto the empty partition (I don't care if it formats it)BUT only add to the boot partition (not reformat it).? I don't want to lose the kernels/images on the boot partition, and from what I've seen most installers wipe out the boot partition prior to adding their own files.

I have set up partitions for this, but I have failed thus far in finding a way to install to the Ubuntu partition I have created. Should I have left that space unallocated? How would I make this work?

Jul 5, 2011Yesterday, I deleted/reformatted one of my internal hard drive which had two partitions. Now everytime I log-in, Ubuntu tries to mount the two partitions that no longer exist. The only way I can resolve this is by pressing "S" twice while trying to log in to skip the auto-mounting process. Is this problem in the grub or should I just disable auto-mounting?
Auto-mounting was enabled automatically when I installed ubuntu in May, so I have no idea how to disable it or how to mount drives that are not automatically mounted at log in.
Ubuntu :: Disk In Use Error When Attempting To Format An Empty Partition?
Sep 8, 2010Just ran into a problem involving mdadm, a disk which had been in a raid array, and an attempt to reformat. Basically, I went to reformat some partitions which had been in raid, and one of them threw the error andy@andy-desktop:~$ sudo mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb5 mke2fs 1.41.11 (14-Mar-2010) /dev/sdb5 is apparently in use by the system; will not make a filesystem here! An attempt to umount revealed it was not mounted. lvdisplay and fuser did not reveal anything to me, so I just started looking around. I was graphically navigating /dev and noticed a /dev/md_d0 which did not look like /dev/md_d1 etc (it was missing a little arrow). I had not seen this notation before (my raid was md0), but figured it couldn't hurt to try stopping it.
andy@andy-desktop:~$ sudo mdadm --detail /dev/md_d0
mdadm: md device /dev/md_d0 does not appear to be active.
andy@andy-desktop:~$ sudo mdadm --stop /dev/md_d0
mdadm: stopped /dev/md_d0
After this, the partition formatted fine! I saw a lot of instructions including zeroing the partition and removing a logical volume, but the above was the only thing which worked for me! Just posted it in case it helps someone else. I know I've not been terribly technical!

Slackware :: Swap Partition Not Working - Shown Empty
Feb 5, 2011The swap partition says that it is empty. When I installed Slackware I'm sure that I pointed to the right place for the swap. Or does it not show any size because none of it is being used?

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting From An Alternate (pre-existing) Partition?
Mar 27, 2010I can't boot to Windows XP after recently installing Ubuntu (Ubuntu boots fine). The error that comes up (straight after selecting XP) is that it can't find "system32hall.dll".
Reason for the problem: Ubuntu is looking at the old, corrupted version of XP that I have. The 'real' version is on another partition, for reasons too lengthy to explain. Note: neither of these partitions were touched when installing Ubuntu - I placed Ubuntu in the pre-existing partitions I had setup when installing previous versions of Linux (last was Mandrake 8.)
Now, I can understand why it is looking at the old version, because it is on the first partition of the hard drive, "dev/sda1", the new version is on "dev/sda3" (nomenclature according to Ubuntu, obviously).
Question: How do I point the config file to sda3? I have tried setting root to "hd0,3" and "hd3,1" with no luck. Original code is below:

Mar 31, 2010I have been using Ubuntu 9.10 on my Macbook Pro for a couple of weeks now and I want to make the jump to Ubuntu on the iMac. However I have some issues and questions:
1) iPhone support: this is coming in 10 right?
2) Wireless keyboard, does this work?
3) Second monitors, does this work?
4) I presume it is best to keep the existing OSX on it and partition it and use Ubuntu as the default, keep OSX for firmware updates and the like.

Apr 14, 2010I recently upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 from 9.10. I now have grub 1.98 and my problem is that when i select windows xp from grub it just goes to a black screen with a white flashing line. If i boot ubuntu it does the same thing for about five seconds then ubuntu loads right up. I hit e on windows xp in grub and this is what came up.

May 20, 2010I'm having a installation problem. I am trying to install Ubuntu on my laptop that is currently running Windows 7, and win7 is needed for use in projecting songs in our church services. The HD is a 500 gb already partitioned with the max. of 4 partitions. Win7 files are on the sda2 partition and my data files are on sda3. Sda1 and sda4 are smaller partitions, one is 3 gb's the other is 1 gb.
My question is, what is the best set up for me to install Ubuntu? I can't create an extended partition since I already have 4 partitions. I like my current partition set up as far as windows goes, but I would really like to get Ubuntu installed. I'm fairly new with Ubuntu, I like what I've seen so far. I had it installed with wubi in windows XP on a laptop that I just sold, and I've upgraded to the windows 7 laptop now, and I'm stuck!

I was trying to install Ubuntu over Linux Mint, but it is not detecting the existing partitions asking me to go ahead and edit the partitions manually (which I am not familiar with). Earlier when I was installing Linux Mint or SUSE, it was detecting the existing partitions and could install easily. Currently I am sure how to go about, but I would like to install Ubuntu badly.

Oct 28, 2010When I load the disk I can view my backup drive properly but when I try to view my working drive it shows it as being empty. I also noticed that I had a 1 mg unallocated partition at the beginning followed by my ubuntu partition.

May 7, 2010I have a 120GB HDD with a 22GB partition for Ubuntu and the rest for Windows XP. Windows finally died on me so I attempted a fresh install on its partition. However, the install threw a ton of errors so I used a LiveCD to re-install Grub and I booted into Ubuntu. I open up the disk utility to re-format the Windows partition so I can re-try re-installing Windows, but immediately I notice that the partitions are not right. If you add up all the partitions, they are about, say, 18 million terabytes over my HDD's 120GB capacity. Ahhh! What do I do?
I don't think anything is terribly altered, since I can still boot into Ubuntu, but I am completely confused and slightly worried that I might kill any chances to save my HDD I can't post a screenshot due to my post count, so the image loses some of its efficacy in making it small enough for an attachment. Debian Installation :: None Of Existing Partition Visible
Feb 14, 2011I am trying to replace an existing ubuntu installation with the current debian testing release. But when it comes to select partitions to install on none of the existing partitions is visible. I only see my SATA hard drive empty. The existing installation of Windows is still bootable and fdisk as well as cfdisk correctly recognize the partition table while parted (which I assume is used by the installation process; all tools run from a live cd) is not:

I am not sure what parted's error message means. I can hardly imagine that it complains about the logical partitions with in the extended one. The reasons for the trouble might come frome the fact that sda4 is marked as primary partition (see cfdisk output). If this is the case, how can I repair this?
