I have a doubt with how to add un-used space in my RHEL 4.0(linux) server to a existing partition. I will explain the scenario:-I have some 220 GB space on my linux server as shown by the command as below-

I have a problem that Google didn't give me a workable solution so I'm posting my question here, hoping that someone has an idea.On a virtual server (VMWare) running Debian 5 I have a disk of 15Gb.
Can anyone tell me if this is possible? I've been playing around with GParted but unsuccessfully. The other option is to 'move' the whole server to a new (to create) virtual server that uses LVM. Any ideas?
I have a BIG extended partition. It's at about 750Gb. Aside from that, I have 2 unallocated spaces, one at 240Gb and one at 5Gb. I want to make one of my storage drives bigger, and so that I can take advantage of all the space I have. (Those 250Gb have been unused for ages. I want to use them for my growing libraries.) So I wonder: would it be safe to put these smaller "chunks" into the extended partition, and still have a working systen? I don't want to mess it all up.
Also, can I safely resize a partition, like adding the extra space, without touching the existing data? I'm not exactly sure how the resize/move function in GParted works. Will it wipe and extend or only extend it by adding it? It would be nice to have these questions answered. Also, if it's to any help, this is my partition table as of now:

As for the first entries, they're unallocated. They're the primary drives, but they don't exist. I'm actually considering to move my partitions out of the extended one, because I only have 3 partitions that I use and will ever use. But if the extended partition is not a problem, I will just keep it this way.
I'd imagine that I first extend the extended partition to consume the unallocated space, and then I move it all to the end of the partition, and then resize sda7 to consume it, and get a 750Gb partition. Can this be done without loss of data?
I originally had an Ubuntu partition on my hard drive which occupied about half of it. I installed Windows 7 in the remaining unallocated space and I was planning on doing a grub update from a live cd afterwards. BUT when I looked at my partition table, the space where the ubuntu partition used to be is now unallocated space!

Is there a tool I can use to resize my existing partitions WITHOUT data loss? I've been using gparted up to now for sorting partition stuff, does that maintain data when resizing (assuming I run from a boot CD or USB rather than a running system)?
I want to install Fedora KDE spin on an existing XFS partition without formatting it. (Since said partition is full of my data that I have nowhere else to put). But the installer doesn't allow me to set the partition as / without formatting. XFS is not one of the filesystems listed as options for formatting. How can I make Fedora do what I want?

Today I was installing a lot of software since I'm just setting up my Slackware system again after a fresh install, and I realized that my root partition has very little space left.

As you can see, I have a 20G (19G here for some reason) root partition, 8G /var, and 86G of /home. I thought this would be plenty since many recent recommendations for / are 10-15G. Now, though, 17G are used up for some reason! How is this possible? I thought a full slackware install only had about 4G of software! I don't have any music or movies or any crazy huge files that I know of, and those would be in my /home directory anyway. Is there any way I can see which files are taking up all this space?
If it's necessary to allocate more space to my / partition, is it still possible to boot up a GParted live Cd, shrink /home a bit, move some partitions to the right, and expand my root partition? I would REALLY prefer I don't have to reinstall since I just spent a ton of time setting up my system again, but if worst comes to worst ... :'-(

I just installed Fedora 12 in a laptop with a big hard drive and used LVM for it. The thing is that I used just a fraction of the LVM total size to create the "/" partition and decided to leave the task of creating the other partition (the data partition) with the rest of the LVM space after F12 got installed. Unfortunately I found that Gparted is apparently unable to perform that task of creating a new partition in unallocated LVM space. Is there any way I can create a new partititon in that unused LVM space?

I installed Fedora 14 onto the 4GB partition but I am running out of space. I have formatted the 8GB partition with ext4 but I am unsure the best way to create more space for the default installation. My ntfs windows partition is of 15 gb approximately and the remaining space that was available for fedora was about 220 GB (non partitioned - I removed all the partitions excepting the windows one using gparted from liveCD prior to beginning installation) ..........after installation etc etc.....my home folder shows me only 150GB of space.....what's happening? View 1 Replies View RelatedI was impressed to be asked on Fedora 10 if I want to upgrade to Fedora 11 but the first time I tried I had this error:
Not enough space in /boot/upgrade to download install.img.
My boot partition is 99MB and AFAIK that is not unusual so I tried tidying up a bit, uninstalling all except 2 kernels, and now have about 80MB for whatever needs to be downloaded in /boot/upgrade. But I get the same error. I can fix this by using wired instead of wireless networking but I want to know for planning purposes (next time I create a boot partition) how much space is required?

Should I delete these? It looks like they might be left over from last time but I assume preupgrade knows what is junk and what isn't.
I now have Windows XP installed, with 30GB of free space on the end of my hard rive. If I install linux there, will it cause Windows XP to fail? Last time I tried this, it says hal.dll was not found. However, that may have been caused by having five partitions. Do u think its safe now that I'll only have 4? Will Windows XP fail if I put in a partition in the free space?

I just downloaded the new fedora and proceed to install it into a free space of 11GB on my HDD. As such the partitioner is unable to create more than 1 partitioneven if free space is available, it reports not enough free space seen if its present. As such it can create only one of the three partitions i.e., swap or / or /home duw to which cannot proceed ahead.' Some more details me running Xp as the other OS on my system.

The problem is that fdisk -l displays start & end sectors of the partitions and I need to know blocks. How do I determine the block number after the last partition to start writing this image?

I have installed oracle enterprise linux on VM ware with 20 gb allocated to guest OS. Now I want to install oracle apps in the guest Os, so I need to extend the volume. I have extended in Vm , but I have to partition in the guest OS, for that purpose I am using Gparted. But I am unable to extend to sda1. I need to have all the unallocation space allocated to sda1. Here is the screen shot, how can I do that. Right now when in press the command df -h in terminal I am gettig 18 gb as space available for sda1, I want to make it 200 gb, in which I would like to install oracle apps. Check out my screen shot.

I was setting up a base image for VMWare and the disk was 200GB, but for some reason the default is for about 40% to go to the root partition and then the rest of it to go to /home (this doesn't include the 2GB or so in swap).
Is there an easy way to recover the space under /home and expand the root partition? Assume there are no user accounts created.
I have decided that my partition table does not meet my needs Barrymore, and I want to shrink the "/" partition by 80GB, and then create another file system on that space. I did some research on-line, and I'm not sure which way is the easiest and more secure way to perform the change with out putting the "/" file system on risk.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just over 20GB of empty space on C:. When I click it under disk-management, the window comes up and says I can only resize it 192 MB less than what it is. But I have 20GB free. Any ideas on what is wrong? I also have this odd 9.56GB partition that is empty. DM says it's "EISA configuration"...whatever that is. I am planning to allocate about 10GB for F11 if this pans out ok.

When booting back in to my windows partition it doesnt recognize the free space instead it thinks the hard drive is still full even though i deleted the data.Not to sure as to why this has happened, as im sure i have deleted stuff of this hard drive before from my linux partition.Any help would be greatly appreciated as my 70gb hard drive is full with only 20gb of data to show for it
