CentOS 5 :: Installing To Empty Partition For Multiboot?

Mar 21, 2010

I have a server running Fedora 6, which I wish to upgrade to Centos 5.4. This will be a lengthy switch over because of all of the apps I need to convert etc. As a precaution, I would like to keep my old Fedora running as multiboot. I have a boot partition, a fedora partition (root), and an empty partition for Centos.

Can I run the Centos installer and direct it to install onto the empty partition (I don't care if it formats it)BUT only add to the boot partition (not reformat it).? I don't want to lose the kernels/images on the boot partition, and from what I've seen most installers wipe out the boot partition prior to adding their own files.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 - Installing CentOS 5.5 To Multiboot

Aug 4, 2010

I decided to install my 4th OS, centos. I had some problem and I want to share my experience in this case. After several install and a few kernel panic message, I could successfully dual booted with Ubuntu 10.04 and centos5.5.

First: Boot from DVD and I got kernel panic. A bios update solved my problem (MSI).
Second: When I installed centos without grub and after the install when I wanted to boot in I got something like this: Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

After 4 days I found out this:
1. I installed every OS, Ubuntu was the last one.
2. I left an unpartitioned free place for centos
3. I installed centos at last. During centos installation, at partitioning, choose "create custom layout"
4. Choose the free place as / and on the next screen you can choose, do NOT install grub.
5. Reboot > in grub choose Ubuntu 10.04 (in my case centos5 already was listed there, but don't go there), because we need to edit the grub.cfg file in ubuntu

My original grub.cfg file, (centos part) was like this:
menuentry "CentOS release 5.5 (Final) (on /dev/sdb3)" {
insmod ext2
set root='(hd1,3)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set bc47e87e-88c6-4756-8f47-361298b23a16
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 root=/dev/sdb3 }

I changed it for this:
menuentry "CentOS release 5.5 (Final) (on /dev/sdb3)" {
insmod ext2
set root='(hd1,3)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set bc47e87e-88c6-4756-8f47-361298b23a16
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 root=UUID=bc47e87e-88c6-4756-8f47-361298b23a16
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.18-194.el5.img }

Save, restart and this time I could boot in to centos. After Ubuntu kernel update, you need to edit grub.cfg again!

Software :: Partition Options On Multiboot

Mar 3, 2009

I plan to partition my hard drive so I can install fluxubuntu, minimal ubuntu with IceWM, ubuntu, and windows. (This thread is not about windows, that is just incidental) I have heard that I should use a partition for each OS, and a seperate partition for data, and that it is more secure that way. (as long as you apply appropriate security measures) I have also read that one should make partitions for system files(files that one does not want people to have writable access, such as the etc directory) My question is, what size should I make the OS partitions for minimal ubuntu with IceWM, FLUXUBUNTU and ubuntu, and are there system files that could be easily shared between them. finally, it seems obvious that all three OS's can share the same data partition, and swap partition.

General :: Multiboot / Upgrade From LVM-based Partition

Dec 27, 2010

I currently have FC3 Linux which installed itself on the hard disk using LVM partitioning, so it is basically all one big partition. I would like to try some other distributions and upgrade to something newer, but don't want to lose my current capabilities and data files, and I know nothing or less about LVM. Is it possible (and if so an example would be nice) to install a non-LVM-based distribution on the LVM disk and have multi-boot options? Or do I have to start over new and drop the LVM? My guess is that I should save my /home (data files and .rc files) on a backup device first, then somewhere/somehow create a new partition for installing another distribution.

Fedora :: Multiboot - Installing F12 With XP / Win7 And Ubuntu?

May 14, 2010

I'd like to install xp, win7, fedora, ubuntu. I installed xp then I used gparted to create a partition before xp and installed w7 both can dual boot fine. I installed fedora 12 in grub I can see fedora and windows bootloader. I can get to win7 and login fine. When I go into grub, then win bootloader, then xp, I can get to the login screen, but I can't login. I enter my pw, it takes several seconds, seems to login, then quickly logs out. I see "closing network connections", then I'm back to the xp login screen again. I'm not sure why I can't login to the xp partition. Fedora and win7 work fine. Win7 & xp worked fine before fedora. Grub menu.lst looks ok. After fixing this, I'd like to next install ubuntu

hd0,0 - sda1 - w7
hd0,1 - sda2 - xp
hd0,2 - sda3 - extended
hd0,4 - sda5 - fat32 (data)
hd0,5 - sda6 - /boot fedora
hd0,6 - sda7 - / fedora
hd0,7 - sda8 - swap fedora

Slackware :: Installing Multiboot Distros With Oracle?

Jul 24, 2011

Im trying to install a multiboot with multi distros, in this case Slackware and Linux Oracle. I have Slackware running for a while now and try to install it in other partition. Suppose I have Slackware in /dev/hdb and planning to install Oracle Linux in /dev/sda. My plan is:

1.Format /dev/sda
2.Install Oracle Linux in /dev/sda using boot disk
3.Modify lilo.conf
4.Run dual boot

But the problem is during the Oracle Linux boot installation: 1.It doesnt recognize the partition and file format that Slackware did in /dev/sda 2.The installation disk then force me to create another partition for memory swap and root directory 3.At first attempt I created a partition in /dev/sda with RAID format which didnt get recognized by Slackware so that I had it wiped out at the next attempt of installation.4.Just before the process of partitioning /dev/sda, Oracle Linux installer from the boot disk cannot detect my dvd drive although the PC was booted from its very drive (Why?) so It was asking me if I need to point out the location of another copy of the image file, which is located in /dev/sda1. The installer read it from /dev/sda1, I think not from DVD drive. This always happens in all attempts.5.At the end, it cannot finish the process of the installation and I have to abort it, without knowing the reason for it. This happens in all attempts also.

I am slightly confused with the way linux stores the files. There is a root directory and within that there are boot ,Var,tmp and home..

Suppose I install an application from a package manager , I really do not understand where the path is ...Supose I want to store certain new applications in the spare partition , how do I tell the system? Also while installing it doesnt give a choice regarding the path ...All I see is a couple of files exracted and when it completes , it sits on the menu neatly. From a storage perspective how do you gain control? Say in Win , normally any package will ask for the path which you can customize..How do you plan the storage of files in Linux?

Ubuntu :: Fresh Partition Not Empty?

Jan 20, 2011

So the other day I got myself a nifty ThinkPad x100e. I immediately removed windows 7 started, and installed UNR 10.04.It has a 250GB hard drive, which I decided to partition, so that I can keep all my stuff on the new partition, and then a fresh format or install of the OS would be easier.After struggling to take ownership of my own damn partition after creating it and mounting it, I discovered a rather interesting problem. I KNOW the partition is empty, but when I right click and go to properties, it says that 10GB is already used? This is rather confusing to me

Ubuntu :: Disk In Use Error When Attempting To Format An Empty Partition?

Sep 8, 2010

Just ran into a problem involving mdadm, a disk which had been in a raid array, and an attempt to reformat. Basically, I went to reformat some partitions which had been in raid, and one of them threw the error andy@andy-desktop:~$ sudo mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb5 mke2fs 1.41.11 (14-Mar-2010) /dev/sdb5 is apparently in use by the system; will not make a filesystem here! An attempt to umount revealed it was not mounted. lvdisplay and fuser did not reveal anything to me, so I just started looking around. I was graphically navigating /dev and noticed a /dev/md_d0 which did not look like /dev/md_d1 etc (it was missing a little arrow). I had not seen this notation before (my raid was md0), but figured it couldn't hurt to try stopping it.

andy@andy-desktop:~$ sudo mdadm --detail /dev/md_d0
mdadm: md device /dev/md_d0 does not appear to be active.
andy@andy-desktop:~$ sudo mdadm --stop /dev/md_d0
mdadm: stopped /dev/md_d0

After this, the partition formatted fine! I saw a lot of instructions including zeroing the partition and removing a logical volume, but the above was the only thing which worked for me! Just posted it in case it helps someone else. I know I've not been terribly technical!

General :: Can't Boot After Empty Primary Partition Was Made Unallocated

May 15, 2010

On a certain computer, I had four primary partitions. The person who installed the Windows 7 on the computer made two partitions for the Windows (sda1 and sda2). Then I made another two primary partitions (sda3 and sda4). sda3 was empty. sda4 is an extended partition that contained the /swap, and /.According to someone else, some viruses get in on the Windows partitions and can then get over to the Linux partitions if they are primary and right after the Windows partitions, or something like that. This person suggested that I create sda3 when I install Linux(SLES 10), but to install Linux on sda4. Then later I can change sda3 to secondary.So I tried this, and the Linux installation went fine.

I decided to change sda3 before I load the application software onto the computer.So I put the GParted CD in, but to my surprise I realised that the harddisk was actually 1 TB, and not 500 GB as I thought. So I had extra space to the right of sda4. I wasn't quite sure what to do with sda3. I thought that perhaps it would be better to unallocate sda3, move the current sda4 to the left, and then make another primary partition on the right of sda4, or just stretch sda4 both ways.Anycase, I unallocated sda3, and just left sda4 as it was.Hm, perhaps you can anticipate the end of the story. I removed the GParted CD, and restarted the computer, but now the computer doesn't let me choose whether I want to boot into Linux or Windows. Um, it doesn't boot at all from the harddisk.

I know it's dangerous to play with partitions, but sometimes the job won't be done if you are too afraid of doing anything, and I dare say you won't learn anything either. There was nothing on sda3, so I didn't think it would have nasty after effects. There isn't any important data on this computer yet, it was two new installations of Windows and Linux. So I guess I could format the harddisk and just reinstall everything, but I would like to learn what goes on underneath the surface.

Ubuntu :: Partitions Are Effed Up - Fdisk -l: Code: Omitting Empty Partition (5)

May 7, 2010

I have a 120GB HDD with a 22GB partition for Ubuntu and the rest for Windows XP. Windows finally died on me so I attempted a fresh install on its partition. However, the install threw a ton of errors so I used a LiveCD to re-install Grub and I booted into Ubuntu. I open up the disk utility to re-format the Windows partition so I can re-try re-installing Windows, but immediately I notice that the partitions are not right. If you add up all the partitions, they are about, say, 18 million terabytes over my HDD's 120GB capacity. Ahhh! What do I do?

I don't think anything is terribly altered, since I can still boot into Ubuntu, but I am completely confused and slightly worried that I might kill any chances to save my HDD I can't post a screenshot due to my post count, so the image loses some of its efficacy in making it small enough for an attachment. CentOS 5 :: Partition Editor Creates Bad Partition Numbers In Text Install

Mar 3, 2009

Trying to install Centos 5.2.i386 from DVD in text install (I'm assuming I need to do text install as I'm setting up raid arrays)

I have 4x150Gb raptors where I want the following layout:

/dev/sda/
/dev/sda1 100Mb (for /boot in raid 1, 4 disks)
/dev/sda2 1000Mb (for swap, raid 0, 4 disks)
/dev/sda3 4000Mb (for /, raid 5, 4 disks)

[Code].....

In the last attempt I did, sdb,sdc and sdd all had the correct ordering of partitions, but sda looked like above, which means I would need to assemble by boot array partition array as /dev/md0 = /dev/sda3, /dev/sdb1, dev/sdc1, dev/sdd1

Why is the partition numbering moving around as I create them?
