OpenSUSE Install :: Load 11.2 On Empty F: Partition?

I have Win7. I partitioned my C: and made a empty F:(97gb). I want to install 11.2 on F:.
1) At Sys Ananysis I get; The partitioning on disk /dev/sda is not readable by partitioning tool parted... You can use the partitions on disk /dev/sda/ as they are. You can format and asign mount points on them. But you can not add, edit, resize, or removefrom that disk with this tool. I click OK
2) New Installation, Use Auto Config
3) Time Zone
4) KDE (same results with Gnome)
5) Partition Based. I go to Create Partition Setup.
6) In CPS I get

I gave upon 11.3 M4.Tried installation by text mode but there's another screen showing various USB devices status superimposing on the Linux text install. Returned to Live installation via Live CD. Installation completed > restart >autoconfig failed. Tried live installation again but Suse kept suggesting installing into one of the empty 2 Gb partitions. Also had problems with Gparted Live 0.5.1-1 CD because somehow the keys froze. Had to replace it with 0.5.2-1. I am installing 11.2 on a laptop but right now I am stuck with frozen "Creating cache files for fontconfig". This has taken over an hour and nothing seems to be happening. I have successfully installed openSUSE 11.2 on an older laptop and a desktop. Also experienced installing Windows 7, Ubuntu and PC-BSD on both types of machines.

Currently I have ubuntu 10.04 LTS as the only OS.I have two partitions one for ubuntu and it is ext by default for ubuntu's files.The other is empty NTFS. (yes, it is formatted in NTFS but I haven't saved anything yet on it).The problem is: I want to install win xp sp3 on this empty ntfs partition safely (without losing ubuntu).My friend told me ubuntu will be lost even if I didn't touch its own partition.

I was thinking of trying out the UEFI support that HP has in my laptop BIOS in the next few days. My reasons is that I get a custom boot logo... and (hopefully) a better boot-speed. What is the current state of affairs with the openSuSE UEFI/EFI install support on a empty hdd for x86_64 does anyone know? (badly worded I apologize) This may seem naive but I have struggled to answer this with most posts being about Mac's for obvious reasons.
Specifically, Do I have to have any custom knowledge on formatting the HDD with a GPT partitions or does the installer do this for you? Secondly, How well does the UEFI bootloader tie in with the config tools in YaST2? (I would like to have UEFI but if it turns into some headache in setting up the boot area by hand each time the kernel updates I will forget it.) I can safely say this will be a machine with only openSuSE installed as an OS, no need for any others or any dual-boot problems. This isn't overly urgent and I will dedicate (at least) a whole weekend to tweaking once I buy a new disk and install openSuSE on it. If nobody knows then I will dive in head first and report how I find it and any problems (and severity).

I have a mysterious filesystem issue with openSUSE on an old machine. Installation wasn't very pleasant but worked finally. It boots fine. However after 5 or 10 minutes, all filesystems vanish. Most programs (but not all) cannot be found anymore. "ls" output is empty everywhere. "top" used to work (it was working on a ssh connection that I just lost). Now it complains about unset TERM variable. I was able to set it again to xterm. Now "top" is working, displays the running processes : mysqld, Xorg, icewm (my WM), nothing strange there, nobody is eating up the resources. I have other linux installed on that machine : Ubuntu freezes occasionally, mostly with Gnome, but it seems to be a totally different problem (maybe related to the radeon driver) ; Mandriva works fine so far. The two IBM 120 GB harddrives are quite old but the manufacturer fitness test didn't find failures. I also checked for bad sectors before formating in openSUSE setup. It doesn't look like a physical I/O problem. In such a case, it would crash or at least complain about not being able to access the HD. Well ... I switched to console but I didn't get any login prompt and now I cannot switch back to X. I can still ping the machine but of course not ssh to it. SysReq keys (although enabled) doesn't work. I guess I will have to reboot brutally. Last time it took me about one houre of pressing 'y' tp repair the filesystem with Ubuntu. I'm sure I will be back soon. What do you guys think about that situation ? I suspect a kernel issue with that hardware. Have you heard about similar problems ? I'm afraid I will have to reinstall 11.1, which used to work fine, on that machine.
Some details about the hardware : The (onboard) Promise controller and the SATA controller are not used. The 2 HD are on the first IDE interface as master and slave.

Sometimes my user list is empty on start-up. When it happens the buttons beneath the empty list (shutdown, suspend and restart), are not responding. As a work-around I login to the first terminal as root to restart the machine and usually my normal user account appears back on the list. This morning the reboot work-around didn't work any more..

Not earth-shattering, I don't suppose, but have noticed that since installing 11.3 (Fresh install, x64, DVD), the "Recently Used" list in the "Start(? Kicker??)" Menu, doesn't save applications through a reboot... ie, if I start Thunderbird, Open Office, whatever while logged in, these will then appear in the "Recently used" section of the menu, but then do a reboot, and the applications area in the recently used menu, will be empty. The "documents" area is fine, and shows stuff after a reboot, but not "applications"....

On Opensuse 11.3,a normal user could not access and modify files in other partitions as the default setting .Is there any way to give a permission to a normal user to do these things instead of do these as a root user?

Looking for source code packages I have configured the "Main repository (Sources)" into the yast list of repositories. However when I select the repository view in th esoftware manager it shows this repository as empty. Other repositories work. I have checked the link to the repository to be valid. I have added it automatically from the "Community repositories".

I have Ubuntu in one partition . The partition is about to be full..I have a spare partition which I thought could merge with the existing..But I guess it is not possible. I am slightly confused with the way linux stores the files. There is a root directory and within that there are boot ,Var,tmp and home..
Suppose I install an application from a package manager , I really do not understand where the path is ...Supose I want to store certain new applications in the spare partition , how do I tell the system? Also while installing it doesnt give a choice regarding the path ...All I see is a couple of files exracted and when it completes , it sits on the menu neatly. From a storage perspective how do you gain control? Say in Win , normally any package will ask for the path which you can customize..How do you plan the storage of files in Linux?

So the other day I got myself a nifty ThinkPad x100e. I immediately removed windows 7 started, and installed UNR 10.04.It has a 250GB hard drive, which I decided to partition, so that I can keep all my stuff on the new partition, and then a fresh format or install of the OS would be easier.After struggling to take ownership of my own damn partition after creating it and mounting it, I discovered a rather interesting problem. I KNOW the partition is empty, but when I right click and go to properties, it says that 10GB is already used? This is rather confusing to me

The partition is formatted to ext3, starting with block 1 on the drive. The mount point for /dev/sdc1 lists 0 files when doing `ls -A` `df -h` shows that the partition has 92MB used. How is this space being used, and how can I free it up?edit: I guess this isn't a newbie question.

I have a server running Fedora 6, which I wish to upgrade to Centos 5.4. This will be a lengthy switch over because of all of the apps I need to convert etc. As a precaution, I would like to keep my old Fedora running as multiboot. I have a boot partition, a fedora partition (root), and an empty partition for Centos.
Can I run the Centos installer and direct it to install onto the empty partition (I don't care if it formats it)BUT only add to the boot partition (not reformat it).? I don't want to lose the kernels/images on the boot partition, and from what I've seen most installers wipe out the boot partition prior to adding their own files.

I was installing opensuse 11.2 in parallel with windows xp.but during installation suddenly power has gone and after that opensuse is giving me the error message corrupt partition.i am also not able to login in xp. so I decide to reinstall windows, I got the error saying "invalid partition table" after the first restart of windows xp installation.
I tried to use windows system recovery console and committing fixmbr and fixboot commands, but didn't work.
i have 2 window partition(1 for windows and 1 for data).i do,nt want to format 2,nd partition.
How can I installed windows?My plan was first to install windows xp, then opensuse again.

The swap partition says that it is empty. When I installed Slackware I'm sure that I pointed to the right place for the swap. Or does it not show any size because none of it is being used?

I started withsda1 windows restore sda3 extendedsda5 swapsda6 /mandrivasda7 /SUSE 11.3
sda8 /SUSE 11.2I then made some changes with gparted (from PartedMagic 5.5) to create an ntfs partition to simulate a condition where someone may want to delete that partition and use the free space for linux. I then deleted that partition, sda2 then sda5 (swap) and taking some screenshots, went about resizing partitions to use that free space and then recreate swap. the intention being to create a basic guide on how to go about this.I have previously only had my swap at the end of the extended partition, deleting itand recreating it later had caused little trouble.I realize that a resize/move operation would have been a better choice.What I was not expecting was the partition number changes that occurred.

The default partition manager which OpenSUSE DVD 11.4 uses (Expert Partitioner) is not creating any logic partition with / mount because another system is already using it, is there anyway to fix this?

I have a broken DVD drive and no others available right now to burn a DVD iso to so I'd like to use a empty hard disk instead.
I've tried Unetbootin but that only copies a few megabytes of files - the rest of the image data in the ISO is ignored.
I have verified the ISO is valid and working with VirtualBox. It's MD5 hash is also as expected. But I need to boot at the real bios not an emulated one.
I've also tried things like:
sudo cat /disk/image.iso > /dev/sdb1
and that got "Permission denied" -

Just ran into a problem involving mdadm, a disk which had been in a raid array, and an attempt to reformat. Basically, I went to reformat some partitions which had been in raid, and one of them threw the error andy@andy-desktop:~$ sudo mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb5 mke2fs 1.41.11 (14-Mar-2010) /dev/sdb5 is apparently in use by the system; will not make a filesystem here! An attempt to umount revealed it was not mounted. lvdisplay and fuser did not reveal anything to me, so I just started looking around. I was graphically navigating /dev and noticed a /dev/md_d0 which did not look like /dev/md_d1 etc (it was missing a little arrow). I had not seen this notation before (my raid was md0), but figured it couldn't hurt to try stopping it.

mdadm: md device /dev/md_d0 does not appear to be active.
andy@andy-desktop:~$ sudo mdadm --stop /dev/md_d0
mdadm: stopped /dev/md_d0
After this, the partition formatted fine! I saw a lot of instructions including zeroing the partition and removing a logical volume, but the above was the only thing which worked for me! Just posted it in case it helps someone else. I know I've not been terribly technical!

On a certain computer, I had four primary partitions. The person who installed the Windows 7 on the computer made two partitions for the Windows (sda1 and sda2). Then I made another two primary partitions (sda3 and sda4). sda3 was empty. sda4 is an extended partition that contained the /swap, and /.According to someone else, some viruses get in on the Windows partitions and can then get over to the Linux partitions if they are primary and right after the Windows partitions, or something like that. This person suggested that I create sda3 when I install Linux(SLES 10), but to install Linux on sda4. Then later I can change sda3 to secondary.So I tried this, and the Linux installation went fine.
I decided to change sda3 before I load the application software onto the computer.So I put the GParted CD in, but to my surprise I realised that the harddisk was actually 1 TB, and not 500 GB as I thought. So I had extra space to the right of sda4. I wasn't quite sure what to do with sda3. I thought that perhaps it would be better to unallocate sda3, move the current sda4 to the left, and then make another primary partition on the right of sda4, or just stretch sda4 both ways.Anycase, I unallocated sda3, and just left sda4 as it was.Hm, perhaps you can anticipate the end of the story. I removed the GParted CD, and restarted the computer, but now the computer doesn't let me choose whether I want to boot into Linux or Windows. Um, it doesn't boot at all from the harddisk.
I know it's dangerous to play with partitions, but sometimes the job won't be done if you are too afraid of doing anything, and I dare say you won't learn anything either. There was nothing on sda3, so I didn't think it would have nasty after effects. There isn't any important data on this computer yet, it was two new installations of Windows and Linux. So I guess I could format the harddisk and just reinstall everything, but I would like to learn what goes on underneath the surface.

When I load the disk I can view my backup drive properly but when I try to view my working drive it shows it as being empty. I also noticed that I had a 1 mg unallocated partition at the beginning followed by my ubuntu partition.
I then ran gparted in terminal and it did show the partition as having my system on it but I am not able to perform any tasks. No moving or resizing.

I have a 120GB HDD with a 22GB partition for Ubuntu and the rest for Windows XP. Windows finally died on me so I attempted a fresh install on its partition. However, the install threw a ton of errors so I used a LiveCD to re-install Grub and I booted into Ubuntu. I open up the disk utility to re-format the Windows partition so I can re-try re-installing Windows, but immediately I notice that the partitions are not right. If you add up all the partitions, they are about, say, 18 million terabytes over my HDD's 120GB capacity. Ahhh! What do I do?
I don't think anything is terribly altered, since I can still boot into Ubuntu, but I am completely confused and slightly worried that I might kill any chances to save my HDD I can't post a screenshot due to my post count, so the image loses some of its efficacy in making it small enough for an attachment. Okay I did a clean network install on 11.2 on my test machine.Old gateway box but it had min requirements. It will load completely into failsafe mode but will not complete a normal boot option.The default Green background images comes up and the cursor comes up, but I let it sit for 30 minutes and nothing. I did a hard reboot, still hung on cursor and green back ground. Booted again but this time choose failsafe, boot up completely. Am I doing something wrong? I have installed many many version of Linux in the past never had a problem like.

i,m just about to install 11.2 from 4 gig dvd, what is the minimum size to be able to install system, I will be triple booting with Win xp Ubuntu I'm just after reccomended boot size I wanna share Home with Ubuntu, windows will just have 15 gig for a game not using the home hope this makes sense

Following a zypper dup and turning my computer off for a few hours; when I rebooted, I got a message saying, "error: you need to load the kernel first press any key to continue . . . " And then it goes back to the grub menu for of the same if I select openSUSE 11.2.SystemrescueCD won't boot it. I've tried to "repair installed system" and "rescue" with my openSUSE 11.1 DVD -- it won't even acknowledge (as it were) the presence of 11.2 or the system on the other hard drive (though it does recognise the partitions).The PCLinuxOS 2009 KDE and GNOME live CDs will redo the MBR of installed systems (at least, as far I know, PCLinuxOS is one of systems). In my experience, the 11.2 live CD won't. I was hoping the 11.1 DVD would. What to do?

After installing 11.2 and selecting dvorak keyboard during the install process was surprised to see that was still in qwerty.
When then selected dvorak at session login, still wouldn't switch to dvorak. When checked loadkeys and other places in config files and system settings, all said dvorak -- but still could only get qwerty.

11.3 will not load after the first reboot during install, after the reboot the screen just goes blank and that's all.
This is a single setup no dual boot, from openSUSE-11.3-DVD-x86_64, on brand new Latitude E6510 laptop.

I've tried to load 11.4 first and 11.2 next. New HD New Asus/ Inte, Celeron 266 Mem 3g using KDE Everything loads but when I try to set up DSL I get message: This package needs to be loaded, SMPPD. [Click install]. After [Click Install], Whether I use Network setup with or without ipv6 option or Ifup with or without ipv6 I cannot connect to /download.opensuse.org. I've tried to load Kinternet but the problem is the same,
it can not connect. Repositories are connected and updated through Yast2.
