Ubuntu :: Can't Boot From CD - Pulling Hair Out?

Oct 29, 2010

I'll start off by saying that I've used Ubuntu for a while now and I've installed it on quite a few machines. This problem is really perplexing. I've got a machine that I wiped (hand built) that's had every version of Ubuntu on it since 8.10 - installed with no problem. The previous incarnation had Ubuntu Studio 10.04.

So I've got a fresh clean HDD. I download (via torrent) the standard 10.10 x64 disk. I boot from the CD and it just hangs at the ISOLINUX bootloader message. That pops up and the CD drive just spins down and nothing happens after that. So I do an MD5 sum on the iso checks out fine. I try the Alternate install CD, same problem. MD5 sum checks out fine on that too. I put the same failing CD in my laptop and it boots straight to the Install Menu.

So I grab a Fedora 13 and a CentOS ISO and burn both of those to CD. In this machine, both of those CDs boot absolutely fine and go straight to the live CD desktop. This PC has 2 optical drives, a SATA bluray drive and a PATA dvdrw drive. I get the same behavior on both drives. I've updated the BIOS on the motherboard (ASUS). I've tried to hit escape and hold down both shift keys while the thing is booting and neither have any effect.

The only thing I haven't tried yet is to burn another 10.04 CD to see if that works. Is this karma for last week when I heard that Katy Perry song on the radio and I didn't change the station right away? Has anyone experienced anything like this?

(Also, an unrelated question, I have some bookmarks that are "read only". They are produced by a firefox extension that saves some information in the unsorted bookmarks. I have set the folder to r/w, but am wondering what u1 would do if I had not - both when pulling the bookmarks up to the server and when pushing them back down.) code...

Ubuntu :: Pulling Out Of Hibernate Boots Into Windows

Aug 4, 2010

I've recently swapped from Windows 7 to Ubuntu Lucid Lynx and I haven't looked back - except for the fact that moving from Photoshop to GIMP is difficult. I digress.

Suspend works nicely (what a blessing ) but Hibernate doesn't.

Ubuntu 10.04 is installed on a 500GB Seagate External hard drive plugged into a USB port on my motherboard. My BIOS is set to boot off of it automatically (boot order). Windows 7 is installed on my 160GB () internal drive.

The problem is not when I put it into Hibernate, it's when I pull it out of hibernate. When I do my computer tries to unhibernate into Windows!

Ubuntu :: Pulling Of Large Files From A Mounted Directory Into RAM?

Oct 18, 2010

I'm having a bit of an issue with Lucid installed via Wubi. I stuck the OS on its own partition (30 GB in size), and don't store any large files in the Ubuntu file system (when I download something large I move it to another hard drive.) I don't have anything wacky or esoteric installed on my system.

I've been consistently having a problem where, after a few hours or a few days of being booted up, Ubuntu warns me that my available HD space is dangerously small. The amount of available HD space Ubuntu sees then shrinks from a few GB to nothing within a few minutes, and the only way I can seem to solve this is to reboot. Taking a closer look at what's happening, my Home folder balloons in size until there's no more writable space recognized. But there are no files being created or added to, so it looks like there's a bug of some sort. This SEEMS to be correlated with watching videos (or maybe it's the pulling of large files from a mounted directory into RAM? My videos are all on another HD, as mentioned before). I can generally go a few days without getting the "low space" message, but I can't seem to make it through a full 2-hour movie without getting the error.

Slackware :: Pulling An IP From Public Wireless?

Dec 9, 2010

I was having a similar issue with my wireless connection with S13.1-64 as this thread. My lappie uses the Intel Wifi Link 5100 AGN and had a problem pulling an IP from public wireless, however, I resolved that by setting the channel within the /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf to the strongest antenna. However, now my problem is just maintaining the connection once it is established, either by time or heavy use the connection will drop, and I will typically have to restart the rc.inet1 script to get my access back again. According to the init script at start-up dhcpcd is forked, but apparently it doesn't do anything. If anyone has any ideas, I am all ears.

Programming :: Pulling Contact Info For 400+ Domains

Jan 11, 2011

I'm doing this manually, as I'm at work, and if I spent 2 days trying to figure out a script to do this they'd maybe take it as me not working and instead messing around. However what I want to do is pull the:

Contact name, Company Name, Address, City, County, Postcode and email from the whois info for a list of about 400 domains we own.

I think I need some kind of combination of dig, sed and awk to pull the info, then filter out the parts I need, however I've never done anything like this before so I need some advice on where to start.

I'm not looking for a full bolown solution, I already have the list of domains so I think it will be something like:

Code:
for x in {list of domains}{
dig x;
somehow grab name, company name, address,
write to file in csv
}

Am I looking at this in the right way, can someone get me started? Is it sed/awk I need or is there another too.

Ubuntu :: Reboot And Select Proper Boot Device Or Insert Boot Media In Selected Boot Device And Press A Key

Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I got this error after: Reducing my Windows 7 partition by about 100gb. Creating a new partition (100gb) and copying my Ubuntu partition (10gb) to the new partition. After it was copied, and pasted, the original partition was deleted. I now had two partitions a new 100gb Ubuntu partition and a 600gb (or so) Windows 7 partition.

All of this was done using a bootable USB with Ubuntu 10.10 and GParted partition editor. Now when I boot I get the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key." error.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Get To Boot Up / Show Menu On Dual Boot With Vista Initially

Jan 18, 2010

Have just installed 9.10, again, many failed attempts previously.Cannot get to boot up and show menu on dual boot with Vista initially,However when I delete the grubenv file the system boots ok and works fine. But does not show the grub menu to choose boot up choices.Got the information to delete the file on some posts elsewhere about booting problem, and tried a longshot and got into Ubuntu for the first time from trying to install now for 3 months! The problem is the file grubenv is created each time so on subsequent boot ups the sytem fails to boot again. The Grub version is 1.97 beta 4, most up to date for Karmic I think, I have seen a version 1.98 but dont think its for Karmic?

Is there a way to modify the grub.cfg file to stop this problem ( all posts say dont touch this file??Or install a script to delete the grubenv file on shutdown as a workaround for me, (I have no idea how to do this whatsoever, I'm not familiar with linux at all)I did read that this problem was fixed/patched in Grub version 2, but dosn't seem.so on my system afetr I updated it when I got into Ubuntu.I couldnt find the patch or fix, I got the information I am on about from this post:URL...It seems to say it was fixed or patched by Colin Watson reading through, but I don't really understand whats being said or how to get the patch on my system if indeed there is one?Sorry for being a bit thick about all this, its a bit beyond my brain now, hope somebody can help out as I have enjoyed my brief bit of fun in Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grow Boot Sector. Delete Swap Partition. Can't Boot Afterwards.

Mar 7, 2010

I'm running 9.10 off of a 4 GiB CF card. I keep running into space issues with updates, so I purchased an 8 GiB replacement card. I've cloned the 4 GiB card to a .IMG file using DD.I've then copied the 4 GiB image back to the 8 GiB card using the Ubuntu startup disk creator program. Once done, I'm able to properly boot off of the new 8 GiB clone.Unfortunately, the clone ends up with 3.67 GiB of unallocated space at the end *see attached). I tried deleting the "extended" partition that the swap is located at after booting from a Live CD and the system was unable to boot after this. I was thinking that I would delete the swap entirely and create a swap file after I merged the existing partitions, but I was unable to do this.

best way to do this (e.g. get one large 8 GiB partition with my old image on it)? I still have the original untouched 4 GiB card and also have an external CF drive if I need to redo the cloning. I've also used Clonezilla before, so perhaps there's a way to do this that allow me to grow the image as it's being cloned.

Ubuntu Installation :: Xp And - Netbook Dual Boot - Error - Windows Boot Failed

Jul 8, 2010

I have a netbook running Windows XP as standard. There is also a recovery partition which came from the factory.

In the past I installed Ubuntu (I think 9.something) from USB key and all worked fine. However my XP became corrupted and I needed to do a repair on it. After this, Ubuntu became removed from the boot select menu.

Since then, Ubuntu has become updated to 10.04, which I now cannot install.

The Live CD tells me there is a "file IO error" and simply stops installation at around 70%.

I did manage to get into Ubuntu from a Live USB using Wubi. However when I chose to install Ubuntu to a Harddrive, the option to "install side by side" was missing.

After reading on the forums, I did a chkdsk /f on Windows and tried again. Now my liveUSB does not show a boot menu!

When I select to boot from USB stick, the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor. Ctrl+alt+dlt reboots.

I'm really lost here! It seems when I fix one problem, another problem arises!

Also when trying to instal Ubuntu within Windows, the process goes through to 100% and asks me to reboot. When I do so, the option for Ubuntu does show in the boot menu. However when I select it, I get an error "Windows boot failed: file wubildr.mbr and status: 0xc00000f - something is corrupt".

Ubuntu :: Very Slow Boot Time On AMD 30m / USB Hardware Doesn't Work After Computer Boot?

Mar 21, 2011

I've been a long time Windows user, but I've started a small firm and because of lack of funds, I've decided to install Ubuntu on my company's PCs.I have 8 PCs in total - 6 of them with Intel CPUs, and the last two with AMD CPUs. I bought the extra two computers because I've managed to find an extra two people to work at my company, and AMD-based PCs are cheaper so I've decided to buy them instead of Intel.Long-story short, I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 and boot time takes about half-an-hour. After the computers finally boot, USB hardware doesn't work at all. I was forced to buy PS/2 keyboards & mice and they both work fine after the PCs boot.I don't know what's causing this delay.I've enabled Cool 'n Quiet from BIOS.I've tried several instructions like editing the /etc/modules file.I've installed cpufreqd, tried to configure it, but it didn't work.I've check the CPU stats and my CPUs are running at 800MHz. I can't believe nobody managed to fix the 800MHz problem as I've noticed it's quite common among AMD Ubuntu users. I think I've tried almost anything that I've found on this forum.I can't keep asking my employees not to reboot their PCs. Both Chrome/Firefox crash a lot on Ubuntu so they're forced to restart their computers. The computer specs are: AMD Athlon II X2 240 dual-core @ 2.800MHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, etc.

Ubuntu Installation :: Won't Boot / System Does Not Boot: "no Bootable Device?

May 19, 2010

Installed ubuntu 10.4 over previous ubuntu on Intel 945G. After installation and reboot the system does not boot: "no bootable device - insert boot disk and press any key".

Installation was done from USB-stick, prepared by UNETBOOTin. I have two HD's, one used for system + storage, another one just for storage. I manually deleted previous system partitions of previous ubuntu install in system HD. The system HD had about 1/3 of free and unallocated space for system partitions, which ubuntu installer created during the installation.

I tried to reinstall grub from bootable USB-stick and it succeeded but it did not help. The system is still not bootable.

I have used ubuntu for years and never happened something like this. Am I missing something or is ubuntu missing something???

HW failure is ofcourse possible but I am quite skeptical about it because Live ubuntu from USB-stick works well.
