View 8 RepliesI'll start off by saying that I've used Ubuntu for a while now and I've installed it on quite a few machines. This problem is really perplexing. I've got a machine that I wiped (hand built) that's had every version of Ubuntu on it since 8.10 - installed with no problem. The previous incarnation had Ubuntu Studio 10.04.
So I've got a fresh clean HDD. I download (via torrent) the standard 10.10 x64 disk. I boot from the CD and it just hangs at the ISOLINUX bootloader message. That pops up and the CD drive just spins down and nothing happens after that. So I do an MD5 sum on the iso checks out fine. I try the Alternate install CD, same problem. MD5 sum checks out fine on that too. I put the same failing CD in my laptop and it boots straight to the Install Menu.
So I grab a Fedora 13 and a CentOS ISO and burn both of those to CD. In this machine, both of those CDs boot absolutely fine and go straight to the live CD desktop. This PC has 2 optical drives, a SATA bluray drive and a PATA dvdrw drive. I get the same behavior on both drives. I've updated the BIOS on the motherboard (ASUS). I've tried to hit escape and hold down both shift keys while the thing is booting and neither have any effect.
The only thing I haven't tried yet is to burn another 10.04 CD to see if that works. Is this karma for last week when I heard that Katy Perry song on the radio and I didn't change the station right away? Has anyone experienced anything like this?
I'm getting a lot of stuff like this in ~/.cache/desktop-couch/log/desktop-couch-replication.log (below). Can someone tell me what's up with this??
(Also, an unrelated question, I have some bookmarks that are "read only". They are produced by a firefox extension that saves some information in the unsorted bookmarks. I have set the folder to r/w, but am wondering what u1 would do if I had not - both when pulling the bookmarks up to the server and when pushing them back down.) code...
I've recently swapped from Windows 7 to Ubuntu Lucid Lynx and I haven't looked back - except for the fact that moving from Photoshop to GIMP is difficult. I digress.
Suspend works nicely (what a blessing ) but Hibernate doesn't.
Ubuntu 10.04 is installed on a 500GB Seagate External hard drive plugged into a USB port on my motherboard. My BIOS is set to boot off of it automatically (boot order). Windows 7 is installed on my 160GB () internal drive.
The problem is not when I put it into Hibernate, it's when I pull it out of hibernate. When I do my computer tries to unhibernate into Windows!

I have just setup evolution to pull in my exchange emails using MAPI. All seems to be well, except that it isn't pulling down my calendar or tasks. I understood that it was supposed to automatically do this, is this correct?We are using exchange 2005 I believe, so wonder if this is specifically the issue.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having a bit of an issue with Lucid installed via Wubi. I stuck the OS on its own partition (30 GB in size), and don't store any large files in the Ubuntu file system (when I download something large I move it to another hard drive.) I don't have anything wacky or esoteric installed on my system.
I've been consistently having a problem where, after a few hours or a few days of being booted up, Ubuntu warns me that my available HD space is dangerously small. The amount of available HD space Ubuntu sees then shrinks from a few GB to nothing within a few minutes, and the only way I can seem to solve this is to reboot. Taking a closer look at what's happening, my Home folder balloons in size until there's no more writable space recognized. But there are no files being created or added to, so it looks like there's a bug of some sort. This SEEMS to be correlated with watching videos (or maybe it's the pulling of large files from a mounted directory into RAM? My videos are all on another HD, as mentioned before). I can generally go a few days without getting the "low space" message, but I can't seem to make it through a full 2-hour movie without getting the error.
i want to be able to convert videos into mp4 videos of resolution 320*240 and frame rate 25ps so that i will be able to play them in my phone..any video converter that can do this job for me?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI was having a similar issue with my wireless connection with S13.1-64 as this thread. My lappie uses the Intel Wifi Link 5100 AGN and had a problem pulling an IP from public wireless, however, I resolved that by setting the channel within the /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf to the strongest antenna. However, now my problem is just maintaining the connection once it is established, either by time or heavy use the connection will drop, and I will typically have to restart the rc.inet1 script to get my access back again. According to the init script at start-up dhcpcd is forked, but apparently it doesn't do anything. If anyone has any ideas, I am all ears.

I have all the usual Gstreamers, restricted extras/flash player etc. I read just about every post I can but see nothing I do not already have.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI cannot get AVI videos to play with the Totem movie player that comes bundled with Ubuntu 8.04 on the Dell Mini 9. I keep getting: "Could not determine type of stream." Randomly, one or two of the dozen or so videos on my SD card will work, but most will not. This is very frustrating because all the videos I download are always in AVI format.
I tried used the synaptic package manager find an alternative player and tried MPlayer, but that didn't do anything. I'd just get a blank screen on everything. Using the tutorial in this forum, I got GNOME Mplayer, which also didn't work, but even a video that worked with Totem would only play audio with GNOME Mplayer.
I looked in the repository for video codec updates but didn't see any. What do I do? Is there like a Winamp for Linux? This is a total bummer. I just want to play AVI files that are so commonly used for video.
I'm trying to find a program where I can edit some hd mkv files. I want to cut pieces of them out and put them together. I was using avidemux but when I went to save it again it said I needed the start point to be a keyframe. It allowed me to save it as an avi, but the color was distorted. I am fine with using avidemux if I can get around this keyframe problem.

On past Thursday i decided to install ubuntu on my laptop and i did it . It is light and healthy (ha ha). Any way, I would like to play AVI, MKV, RMVB, and MP4 videos but i couldn't. I tried a lot of debian packages and drives (i.e. files with .deb extension) but no result except installing RealPlay that i am using it to play mp3 files only.
can you give me some packages to play those files. (I can't connect my laptop to Internet for the time being). In addition, I have Huawei E1750 USB Modem but the system does not recogize it. Is there any way to play those videos and surf the net using the modem in UBUNTU 10.04 LTS.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to convert flv videos to MP4 so that I can load them onto my iPod Classic 160 G (video).
So far no program has successfully converted an flv file to a usable mp4.I've tried Avidemux (both gtk and qt), Kdenlive, WinFF, Mobile Media Converter, DownloadHelper (FireFox addon) Tragtor and of course the King of them all- FFMPEG. Not one of the previously mentioned programs has successfully and consistently converted an FLV to mp4 for my ipod.
It could be that I'm doing something wrong with FFMPEG or don't have the correct codecs (whatever the heck they are?!) installed or that I voted for McGovern in '68. The "help" from FFMPEG both IRC and their obnoxious email list is beyond deplorable.
Anyway, I need to know a reliable and consistent way to turn flv or any other videos into an MP4 format that will run on my iPod. The program must reside on my machine and not some online converter service. If I have to use FFMPEG (which I understand most programs use as their core) I need to know how to do it....and for God's sake don't tell me to read the online documentation at FFMPEG..
My Dad who I have just gotten on to Ubuntu is wanting to burn some some avi videos onto a DVD, but wants them in a DVD format though so that he can play them on any type of dvd player. I got him to install k3b and try that but as I've never had to do this I'm not sure my self how to do it so this leads me to ask;
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have some 10hrs videos with around 6GB in size. Unfortunately avidemux2_cli runs into problems copying certain parts of it into an output file (frames get blur).
So I tried ffmpeg, but even if I use the sameq switch (same quality as source video), the output video is not a 1:1 copy of the source video. In fact the output video is encoded again (and sound is not as in the source video) and that takes ages against a copy activity by avidemux. Is there any other cli program for simply copying parts out of videos?
I've got an eeepc 1101ha and have installed the latest ubuntu, 10.10, but i can't watch any videos! Besides the original player, i have installed and tried to watch videos in VLC, SMPlayer and GNOME MPlayer but it has always some kind of error. In VLC I can hear the sound. On all others the file simply doesn't work.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI would like to write a script that pulls the last line of data out of a txt file and then saves it to another txt file. The txt file that I am looking at resides here. [URL]
I know I can grab that file using wget. I've done a little scripting but nothing major.
I'm doing this manually, as I'm at work, and if I spent 2 days trying to figure out a script to do this they'd maybe take it as me not working and instead messing around. However what I want to do is pull the:
Contact name, Company Name, Address, City, County, Postcode and email from the whois info for a list of about 400 domains we own.
I think I need some kind of combination of dig, sed and awk to pull the info, then filter out the parts I need, however I've never done anything like this before so I need some advice on where to start.
I'm not looking for a full bolown solution, I already have the list of domains so I think it will be something like:
Code:
for x in {list of domains}{
dig x;
somehow grab name, company name, address,
write to file in csv
}
Am I looking at this in the right way, can someone get me started? Is it sed/awk I need or is there another too.
I'm able to get HDMI audio/video perfectly when I'm playing a dvd on mythbuntu. However, If I try to play the ripped version or any other video that is on the hard drive, I get no Audio?
I've checked alsamixer to make sure the device isn't muted.
If I use vlc media player I don't have any audio either. Is there a way to enable hdmi audio as default?
If I try playing ..... or other streaming video I have no sound. It used to work and then my dumbA$$ tinkered with it and now I have restored Flash, which was working flawlessly, don't know where my head was at but it was dark and smelly.
EDIT: I have Ubuntu 9.10 and my sound card is an nVidia Corporation MCP61 High Definition Audio (rev a2). I tried to follow along with the instructions in the sticky regarding the
Quote:
Comprehensive Sound Problem Solutions Guide
but when it gave me the instruction to select my sound card manufacturer from the drop down menu, I never found it.
FWIW, my speaker are on and they play music, system sounds etc, just no sound for streaming video. Pandora works fine etc. Also, this is isolated to Firefox, as it works fine in Opera.
Even after I downloaded this version of flash, some flash videos will not play. This video crashes FF It plays in Windows though
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having a little problem with my flash player, the video plays fine but I can't get any sound. The sound card works properly with any other application, such as Amarok, but not with flash videos and my hardware is mostly Intel witch is linux-friendly from what I know, so I guess that it isn't a driver problem. Therefore, I switched from windows to linux only a couple days ago, so it may be a newbie issue as well.
I'm using Kubuntu 10.04 64-bit with HDA Intel audio chip set with flash player 10.0.45.2. If anyone have a solution/explanation,
I am trying to combine two videos into one file, so that I can have them playing side by side and in sync.Basically they are two angles of the same thing, and I want to be able to demonstrate both at once. The files are completely different formats right now (MPEG-2 and h.264), but I could convert them. Is there any way to do this, or a way I could have them both play in sync even if I can't combine them?
