View 5 RepliesI've been away from Kubuntu for a while but came back when Kubuntu 11.04 was released because it's awesome. I have a newer laptop since then, a Latitude E6410 with Intel graphics and 8GB of RAM. Everything works great, except......Sometimes when I resume from suspend to RAM, the screen flickers with thin white lines across the screen. I can switch to a tty and reboot it from there, but I'm unable to use KDE until I reboot. A lot of times resuming from suspend works without issue, but sometimes this problem occurs. I haven't figured out exactly what triggers it. In fact, the most recent time it happened, I didn't even have an application open.
I would like to figure this out because I use suspend a lot. I rarely turn off my laptop unless an update requires me to. I prefer to be able to close my lid and resume whatever I was working on later, but with this glitch I cannot trust it to do that.
The problem is black screen after resuming hibernation.After I switch my computer on (after hibernation), I can see some progress bar and (after loading to 100%) black screen appears.I have Debian + GNOME and I DON't have xscreensaver.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 10.04. What I want to do is have the xboxdrv (xbox userspace driver) run after I resume from suspend. I created a script for it to run at boot and that worked out fine but I can't figure out how to enable it after I resume. I found something that described how to resume a module from suspend and it was to be placed in /etc/pm/sleep.d. That script looked like this:

That was for a wireless module to load after a suspend. What I did was replaced /sbin/modprobe ath_pci with the location of the xboxdrv at /usr/bin xboxdrv; unfortunately, that didn't work. I actually tried pointing it to my script that runs at boot but that also didn't work. Is there anyway I can just write a simple script that will run after I resume?
edit: Okay I also tried putting a script in another place at /etc/acpi/resume.d/xbox.sh; I had to create the folder resume.d. There I put the same script that I use at startup (which works fine) and it still won't work.
Before upgrading to 10.04 from 9.10, I had sound issues after resuming from suspend (I had no audio at all). I found a script that solved the sound issue. My problem now is, with 10.04, the script keeps my laptop from going into suspend. I haven't been able to find anything to resolve this issue in 10.04. Any help as to why/how to resolve?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got Karmic installed on an HP 6930p, and with relatively little intervention, all hardware has been supported beautifully. I'm using the ATI driver for graphics. Battery life increased dramatically after an update a couple of months ago. However, occasionally (1 in 8 times maybe), the screen is black when waking from suspend. Disk wakes, etc, but the screen is off. Trying to re-suspend with fn key doesn't work. Ctrl-alt-f key combos don't work. I have to hold the pwr button down.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using Ubuntu 11.04 64bit. Mainboard Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2V. My LCD is a HDTV monitor which is plugged to onboard graphic card.
I don't know what happen with my Ubuntu. It sometimes goes black when I try to wake my PC when it's suspended previously. The screen is black, but I still can move mouse cursor. I also can do blindly click on stuff on screen (I could play a song last time by clicking randomly). This problem also happens sometimes when I switch back to PC from TV (My LCD is a HDTV monitor).
The only action I can do when it happened is reset my PC.
I am having some pain with my new Squeeze installation, I am not sure if I am asking to much of it or it is an easy fix.
Firstly my system is laptop which I regularly plug a second monitor into. The video adaptor is an ATI HD4550 mobile.
My problem is that when ever suspend or hibernate my system, and even sometime when I boot up the screen(s) are just blank, although sometime they don't, it always happens if I suspend by closing the lid of my laptop, and only sometime happend with through Gnome is go ->System->Shutdown->Suspend. This is really annoying.
Another issue which I think is connected is that as I said I have a second monitor (most of the time) and when I boot up then it works until I log in, then a message pops up say the configuration can not be applied and it revert to Mirror mode or it does this thing where it places the second screen inside (virtually) the built in Laptop panel, it will not let me fix this through the monitors dialog just displaying the same message. I can fix this by doing

This gets as far as killing Gnome them it prints an error the to console, at which point Imopen a new terminal by ctrl+alt+f2 and

invoke-rc.d gmd3 start
then it works fine and even remember that I set the secondary screen to be the primary monitor through xrandr.
I tried install fgrlx drivers instead but it didn't really fix the issue, so I removed them.
I'm running openSUSE 11.2 on a Thinkpad T61p with nvidia graphics. I'm running the proprietary nvidia driver.The battery ran very low and the computer suspended itself. I like to suspend my laptop when I close the lid. I have squeeze installed. When I open the laptop lid all lights indicated that it coming out of suspend but the monitor stays black. It is worse since I install the ati drivers for the card instead of the xorg. It did it with both but worse with nonfree drivers. I can get it to come out by ctrl alt f2 and the ctrl alt f7. If I have compiz enabled when I resume from suspend I just get a black screen with some garbed colors and I have to hold the power button to shut it off. I have tried turing sync to vblank off. It works fine with no compiz. Is there anyway I can get resume working with compiz enabled?

When I suspend my computer, everything resumes fine... but the sound. The sound actually still works for the internal speakers, but not anymore for any jack-plugged headset or speakers. If I reboot, it works again. I also see nothing in the logs (dmesg, /var/log/messages).
These two commands return the same thing before and after resuming:

As it was recommended a lot when I googled it, but it seems that the alsa bin/script is not available on debian. It tells me repeatedly to install alsa-base, which was already installed. The following commands have been run one after the other, in that order:

When the computer is in standby i press the power button and it whirrs into life but the screen stays blank and the power light stays orange.
Only way to sort it is to turn it off then on again.
I bought a laptop from ZaReason (zareason.com) with Ubuntu already installed. I am currently running 10.10. The machine has worked great but recently has had problems coming back from hibernation. This is a new problem and did not seem to coincide with an update or new software. When I try to "wake up" my laptop, it shows a bunch of text (I am not that computer-literate, so I don't understand the text) and becomes unresponsive. Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora.This is my main computer.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 11.04 today as the main OS on my laptop.I had deleted my XP partition, and repartitioned it according to a guide I had found. (http:url)......Basically it was setup like this: 500mb ext2 primary partition, has the grub folder, I believe this is either the '/' partition, or the '/boot' partition 2gb swap space logical partition
10gb ext4 logical partition -- this is either the '/' or the '/boot', it contains the 'bin,boot,cdrom,dev' etc folders 243gb (the rest of my hard drive, with the exception of a partition that contains documents and files from my XP OS, formatted to NTFS) ext4, this is the one that has all my desktop/documents/etc folders.After Ubuntu was done installing, I had some message pop up about installing an ATI proprietary driver for my ATI graphics card (an ATI Radeon HD 4330, I believe, I may have messed that number up). I installed it and rebooted, no problem.
Next, I had another update window pop up with 198 items checked and ready to download and install. I went through all of this, and rebooted, again, no problem.Next thing I did was install some apps that were essential for me to have to use for my work (an ide, chat programs, etc). No problem with any of that.Last thing to install was the OSE Virtualbox, and then I installed WindowsXP Pro and Windows Vista Business, then installed the guest addition addon for VB. This all worked without any issues whatsoever.
Time goes on, and I notice my computer is heating up much more than (seemingly) normal. I begin to wonder if its my graphics card. So I shut down the computer and let it cool down. Reboot, and no problem, still working fine.Then I opened a couple of apps and tried a simple game (can't remember the name) I believe it was a simple 3d topdown, as I wanted to test my graphics card. This is where things seemed to start to go wrong. My laptop began hanging, not even allowing me to access the terminal via ctrl+alt+f2. The screen flashed and I saw the blue/green/grey fuzz that I get when the graphics card is starting to heat up too much. Then everything hangs and I can't do anything at all, including move the mouse. I did a hard reboot (I believe this is what you call pulling the plug/pressing the power button, correct me if I'm wrong). I then rebooted, saw a chkdisk, then it booted seemingly normal, but it hung right after the purple screen after the grub screen.
This is pretty much where I'm at right now. I strongly suspect the fault is with the ATI drivers, but have been completely unsuccessful in my attempts to fix it. I've googled just about everything I could think of, along with searching these forums. I've tried just about everything listed in the forums, but to no avail.I've tried the commands that are supposed to purge the ati drivers, but all I get are errors that say they can't remove the 'virtual drivers'.
Right now I'm booting off a live cd, so I know the computer still works fine, just not my actual installed OS. I'd really like to get the issue resolved without having to reinstall, as it took quite awhile just to get it usable in the first place, but this has already taken so much time, I may just resort to that if we can't solve it any other way. Got too much work to catch up on as it is.As a re-instated note, perhaps if you have any tips, but not particularly about fixing the OS, my laptop (I'm strongly guessing my graphics card) is heating up much more than normal, compared to that when XP was installed. Is this more than likely just a driver issue, as is the rest of it? Also, I did have Compiz installed, though I didn't choose for it to be installed, I believe it came pre-installed. I've heard it could cause some issues, though I have no idea as to the validity or relation to this particular issue.

I just remembered while searching for a solution, I found a post somewhere that said something about the information not being sent to the monitor from the graphics card properly, thus no desktop. I'm guessing that'd still fall under the driver issues, but again, I'm unsure. I would think that wouldn't be entirely true anyway, since I can still see my mouse fine, just no desktop, only a black screen.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 running kernel .26 installed on my Dell Dimension 2350 with 512mb of memory. The problem I have been having is, When I am using the computer mostly Internet stuff for no reason the monitor will go black then on the screen it will be at a terminal screen, kind of like when you start up the computer, I don't remember what is all on it but the last thing in the list was: checking battery state: OK after that the screen will flash in multiple colors and then it goes into a loop of just black screen than a colorful flash and back over to a black screen. the only way I can fix that is by holding down the power button. this will happen mostly on face-book on the games and just on the profile page, but it does happen just checking my gmail or play solitaire it does this around 4-8 times a day.

4 gig of corsair dual ram,
ati 4850 graphics,
onboard audio.
ahci mode
win 7 installed on intel ssd, and xp on a samsung 320 gb sata 2,
i had this configuration running fine for 2 months without boot loaders,
on pc start up i choose from which hdd to boot from.
i installed ubuntu on the samsung drive where it was recognised fine, wiped it all and installed automatically.
pls let me know if there is anything i missed, and advice if possible in what to do.
