Fedora Hardware :: Slow SATA-Device After Resuming From Suspend Mode?
Dec 11, 2010
since ever, i face the problem, that i cannot continue using my computer properly after i suspended it to ram and wake it up again.Fedora 14, 64-bit, most recent and stable kernel
mainly KDEMotherboard: Gigabyte P55A-UD4Hard DrivesSAMSUNG HD501LJSAMSUNG SP1213NI can figure out, that everything works fine, but with a severe delay.Having a look at my led, signifying hard drive activity, it flases once a second for approx 10ms. frequency is very constant.so i performed several checks:firstly, hdparm -i, there is no difference before and after sleeping mode:
Code:
[root@bobbl-pc bobbl]# hdparm -i /dev/sda

The machine completely locks up (Caps lock LED doesn't even light up). I've followed the wiki, but the following command did not yield any information. dmesg | grep "hash matches" after echo 1 > /sys/power/pm_trace

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04. What I want to do is have the xboxdrv (xbox userspace driver) run after I resume from suspend. I created a script for it to run at boot and that worked out fine but I can't figure out how to enable it after I resume. I found something that described how to resume a module from suspend and it was to be placed in /etc/pm/sleep.d. That script looked like this:
#!/bin/bash
case $1 in
resume)
[code]...
That was for a wireless module to load after a suspend. What I did was replaced /sbin/modprobe ath_pci with the location of the xboxdrv at /usr/bin xboxdrv; unfortunately, that didn't work. I actually tried pointing it to my script that runs at boot but that also didn't work. Is there anyway I can just write a simple script that will run after I resume?
edit: Okay I also tried putting a script in another place at /etc/acpi/resume.d/xbox.sh; I had to create the folder resume.d. There I put the same script that I use at startup (which works fine) and it still won't work.

Before upgrading to 10.04 from 9.10, I had sound issues after resuming from suspend (I had no audio at all). I found a script that solved the sound issue. My problem now is, with 10.04, the script keeps my laptop from going into suspend. I haven't been able to find anything to resolve this issue in 10.04. Any help as to why/how to resolve?

I've been away from Kubuntu for a while but came back when Kubuntu 11.04 was released because it's awesome. I have a newer laptop since then, a Latitude E6410 with Intel graphics and 8GB of RAM. Everything works great, except......Sometimes when I resume from suspend to RAM, the screen flickers with thin white lines across the screen. I can switch to a tty and reboot it from there, but I'm unable to use KDE until I reboot. A lot of times resuming from suspend works without issue, but sometimes this problem occurs. I haven't figured out exactly what triggers it. In fact, the most recent time it happened, I didn't even have an application open.
I would like to figure this out because I use suspend a lot. I rarely turn off my laptop unless an update requires me to. I prefer to be able to close my lid and resume whatever I was working on later, but with this glitch I cannot trust it to do that.

When I suspend my computer, everything resumes fine... but the sound. The sound actually still works for the internal speakers, but not anymore for any jack-plugged headset or speakers. If I reboot, it works again. I also see nothing in the logs (dmesg, /var/log/messages).
These two commands return the same thing before and after resuming:
Code: Select allwoowoo:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [HDMI ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel HDMI
HDA Intel HDMI at 0xf7a14000 irq 34
1 [PCH ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
HDA Intel PCH at 0xf7a10000 irq 33
[Code].....
I also tried
Code: Select allsudo alsa force-reload
As it was recommended a lot when I googled it, but it seems that the alsa bin/script is not available on debian. It tells me repeatedly to install alsa-base, which was already installed. The following commands have been run one after the other, in that order:
Code: Select allroot:~# alsa force-reload
The program 'alsa' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
apt-get install alsa-base
alsa: command not found
Code: Select allroot:~# sudo apt-get install alsa-base
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
alsa-base is already the newest version.
[Code] ....
How to prevent me from rebooting each time I need sound after suspending my computer?

I recently did a fresh install of 11.04 (previously had 9.10) Everything works fine and dandy (I didn't have to do much tweaking at all to this version!!!) Except: When my computer resumes from the screensaver (GL text, set to display time) it takes nearly a minute for my DE to show up. When it finally does show up it takes another minute or more for the computer to run at normal "speed". A lot of lag and unresponsive mouse etc. After a few minutes the computer runs fine...I am not so linux savvy, what I know I have gleaned from forums such as this one. Is there something that 11.04 runs as default that I need to shut off to stop my slow resume problem?

Is anyone else having trouble with waking up from suspend mode? After bringing the computer (Dell Studio 1555) back from suspend mode, GNOME moves very slowly. Cursor is unresponsive for significant amounts of time - any open windows do not respond to selection... Effects don't usually go away until a reboot is performed. This evening, one such restart resulted in a crash, where the shutdown process locked at the attempt to shut down the mouse/pointer module..

I'm trying to move an existing FC10 install (created by someone else) from a 160GB WD1600AAJS SATA disk to a 160GB WD1600AAJB PATA disk (cursed trend of horizontally mounting SATA connectors at the end of the motherboard means the latest rev mobo doesn't fit in our enclosure!). I've used DD to copy the disk image from one to the other, but when attempting to boot, I get the following error:
Code:
Unable to access resume device (UUID=946f216f-0c24-4b02-a996-f42059970de7)
mount: error mounting /dev/root on /sysroot as ext3: no such file or directory
That particular UUID maps to sda2, which is the swap partition. Interestingly, both the SATA and PATA disk come up as /dev/sda on the motherboard. I kind of grok that the UUIDs are substitutes for directly naming the disks, and that they're referred to in fstab, initrd-2.6.27.12-170.2.5.fc10.i686.img, and in /dev/disk/by-* I'm guessing the problem is that the GUIDs (at least the one for swap) are no longer the same. How are they assigned to the partitions during boot?
I tried doing
Code:
swapoff -a
mkswap /dev/sda2
swapon -a
and put that new GUID in fstab and into initrd-* (using some steps I found elsewhere on how to gunzip/rezip it).At that point, I get a kernel panic on boot
Code:
Kernel panic - not syncing: CFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
So I'm guessing that the other UUUDs have changed as well and I need to update them. How would I figure out what they are? I suppose I could change the references to /dev/sda*, but I didn't build this original image and I'm thinking whoever did had a good reason to go with UUIDs.

I've read hundreds of threads on this problem but they seem to be intermittent and the resolution has been using a different kernel version.
I'm using the latest kernel but I still have this problem
Running Logical Volume Manager gui and attempting to extend the volume results in the same error.

Is there a way to check what caused Ubuntu to wake from suspend mode?
Ubuntu 10.10 on a desktop.
Have tried disabling all BIOS wake events (and WOL).
Have ensured mouse doesn't move.
Need a way to know what caused it to wake. Happens 90% of the time, usually 3 seconds after it suspends.

My computer runs really well when I first switch on, and usually I'll leave it on all day, and just suspend it when I'm not using it.But since a couple of days ago, it's been playing up after waking from suspend. Everything slows to a crawl, and the system monitor shows the CPU working at 96-100% permanently, even when I'm not doing anything. It's not like I even have many apps open. Generally I'll have a few tabs going on Opera, have Thunderbird open, and Gwibber. I'll open and close gedit and gimp as I need them, and that's about it. Having said that, this new version of Thunderbird seems very slow to me compared with the previous one.

I want to install Ubuntu 10.10 via a DVD-ROM but I faild. I got the message "no common cd-rom drive was detected." I have tried to install ubuntu 11.4 and failed too.
Hardware Setting:
DVD-ROM was attached to SATA 3.0 port.
SATA controller was set to IDE mode.
PCH is CougarPoint.
I use the same hardware setting to install Red Hat 6.0 and it works fine. I tried following boot option but in vain: noapic, acpi=off, nodmraid, all_generic_ide. It is ok to boot via a live usb but ubuntu 10.10 still can't find DVD-ROM. I have to use the hardware setting I descripted to install Ubuntu 10.10.
dmesg:
Code:

I realized after spending some time performance tuning my mini Linux server that the hard drive is stuck in IDE mode, and I can't get the controller to be discovered in AHCI mode.EDIT: I should add that I'm running Vector Linux 6.0 Lite, which is based on Slackware 13.0. The Kernel version is 2.6.27.12.
The mobo in question is actually a small mini-ITX board from Foxconn. Here is a links to the specs:url.I use it for a media server, and so far the drive I'm using (Hitachi HDE721010SLA330) is working fine in IDE mode (apparently).
I have a strong suspicion that the crappy Foxconn BIOS supplied with the board is not initializing the Intel 945GC controller in AHCI mode. There is a BIOS entry for setting the controller to "Advanced", but I don't think it's doing the job.
Here is an "lspci -vvnn" of my system:
Code:
00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ/P/PL Memory Controller Hub [8086:2770] (rev 02)
Subsystem: Foxconn International, Inc. Unknown device [105b:0d4d]
Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx-
Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=fast >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort+ >SERR- <PERR- INTx-
Latency: 0
code....
Is there anything I can do to get the drive/controller in ahci mode, or is the BIOS screwing me?

I have never had a working suspend. But ... every year or so I try it DOH!!! to see if the updates have solved itI used suspend mode today, and when I woke the system up , all seemed fine untill I tried to browse the internet. It told me I was offline. no ammount of clicking "go online" would work. So, then I noticed the network connection was broken.I did a few things to get connected, and I want you all to tell me what I need to put back again ! IPV4 and IPV6, I unclicked the box to require this for connection to complete.Somewhere else, there was a list of servers to ignore. I removed them all. (I think there werre 3) one was localhost another was similar, and the third was a number.I just want to know what these should be set at, because just because it works - doesn't make it right

Disclaimer: I have very little linux desktop experience...I've only used command line stuff for work in my previous life. I am joyfully coming off of a long addiction to MS but am having a bit of a hard time adjusting.
ISSUE: I can't seem to figure out how to turn off suspend mode. I have turned every setting I could find in the power management to "do nothing" and I have turned off all of my power mgmt options in the system bios. A "friend" suggested I remove HAL...which caused me to lose my secondary internal HD and all of my usb devices...and the issue persisted. Every 20 minutes of no action the screen blanks and my monitor goes into standby mode which is making watching movies in bed a less than relaxing experience.
Some background that may or may not be useful: I installed kubunutu 10.04 (2.6.32-28-generic) from cd on a fresh HD. Initially I had issues with the wireless network and alsa/pulse sound. I worked through those through much trial and error but the suspend issue persists. I've uninstalled and re-installed lots of packages I probably shouldn't have been messing with and would really like to avoid a reinstall as this seems to be the final fix I need to get things running the way I want them.

Just curious if this is possible. What I want to do is setup a rsync job to backup my laptop to my personal file server(same LAN), but I want it do do this at 3AM while I'm sleeping. However I always close my laptop lid when I'm done using it which puts the laptop into suspend mode since that's how I configured my power options in gnome. Since I don't want to leave my laptop powered up all the time, I was wondering if it is possible to have a cron job scheduled that will wake the laptop up(out of suspend mode) and run my script/backup job, all without opening the lid of the laptop, and then put it back into suspend mode when it's done. Is this possible, and is it as easy as scheduling a cron job or is there some other scripting/configuration/trickery that I need to do to accomplish this?
Also, my laptop's BIOS has the option to power on at a scheduled time if needed, but I'm not sure if that would work with it being suspended(hibernation is not an option since my entire HD is encrypted with LUKS and I would have to be present to enter the password to boot the system.).
