I am having some pain with my new Squeeze installation, I am not sure if I am asking to much of it or it is an easy fix.
Firstly my system is laptop which I regularly plug a second monitor into. The video adaptor is an ATI HD4550 mobile.
My problem is that when ever suspend or hibernate my system, and even sometime when I boot up the screen(s) are just blank, although sometime they don't, it always happens if I suspend by closing the lid of my laptop, and only sometime happend with through Gnome is go ->System->Shutdown->Suspend. This is really annoying.
Another issue which I think is connected is that as I said I have a second monitor (most of the time) and when I boot up then it works until I log in, then a message pops up say the configuration can not be applied and it revert to Mirror mode or it does this thing where it places the second screen inside (virtually) the built in Laptop panel, it will not let me fix this through the monitors dialog just displaying the same message. I can fix this by doing
invoke-rc.d gmd3 restart
This gets as far as killing Gnome them it prints an error the to console, at which point Imopen a new terminal by ctrl+alt+f2 and
invoke-rc.d gmd3 stop
invoke-rc.d gmd3 start
then it works fine and even remember that I set the secondary screen to be the primary monitor through xrandr.
I tried install fgrlx drivers instead but it didn't really fix the issue, so I removed them.

All is in the thread title. When I log back in after suspend or hibernate I get a lot of flickering on the screen. I noticed (I think) that it calms down a bit when streaming video from the net, if that gives any clue...
I'm using a dual boot with Vista basic/lucid lynx on an Acer Aspire 5100 laptop.

Ok so I'm still a bit of a Ubuntu n00b and I just installed 10.04 on my new laptop (Asus U35F) and it's working pretty well except for one problem.. Every time the laptop goes to sleep/suspends/hibernates, when I try to resume it again it hangs. So I end up seeing the screen to re-log in and I can usually move my mouse around and start typing my password in and all of that for maybe a second, but after that it just freezes!
Especially since right now Ubuntu is the only operating system I have running, and since I use this in school and need to conserve battery as much as possible so it stays running through 6 hours of class, I really need to get this fixed up soon..

I would like to disable the login screen when the computer returns from suspension and hibernation, so that it will automatically log me back in. I am using Ubuntu 9.10.When I come back from suspension, for some reason, my key board does not work in the login screen and I cannot type my password.

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04. I didn't really find the Unity interface useable (I didn't like Ubuntu Netbook Edition for this exact reason) and am running it in Classic mode. I have a Acer Aspire One D255, Intel Atom processor, etc. When I start the computer up from a hibernate, the screen goes black with a set of random colored pixels at the top corner. I have a mouse but nothing else.

I installed KDE (because its what all the pretty Linux desktops use) and gave it a go. My initial problem-black screen. But I had that taken care of. So I had a great time and all and then I restart and then FREEZE (which is VERY rare in something as great as Ubuntu, compared to Windows which I now hate). When it does that, mouse moves but thats it. I'm overall very smart and pretty good with operating system but Linux code is something I am yet to learn. Also, my Gnome desktop isn't really that bad although I'm desperate for one of those sidebars that show you the CPU and time and weather and crap.

When I updated from 9.10 to 10.04, the only thing I noticed immediately was that the Application menu and the things next to (Similar to window's Start button). That's still gone. I also am having problems with my hibernate. Whether I close my lid or physically click to hibernate, all that happens is my screen goes black but doesn't shut off all the way and the power button does nothing.

I've got Karmic installed on an HP 6930p, and with relatively little intervention, all hardware has been supported beautifully. I'm using the ATI driver for graphics. Battery life increased dramatically after an update a couple of months ago. However, occasionally (1 in 8 times maybe), the screen is black when waking from suspend. Disk wakes, etc, but the screen is off. Trying to re-suspend with fn key doesn't work. Ctrl-alt-f key combos don't work. I have to hold the pwr button down.

had 10.04lts running on a thinkpad t42 for the last month or so, and in the most part have been quite impressed. however, i have been suffereing from random lockups, where the screen goes black, mouse and keyboard are (seem) unresponsive and the magic sysreq key doesnt seem to work either.
can post lshw if requested, but having googled this seems to be an issue with video chipsets, mainly intel. this t42 has a 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500] and as with googled results the last entries in the syslog are
Jun 6 07:16:27 t42-laptop AptDaemon: INFO: Quiting due to inactivity
Jun 6 07:16:27 t42-laptop AptDaemon: INFO: Shutdown was requested
this seems to happen most often when using transmission (port 10009) and gotten much worse following a recent set of updates to kernel

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 64bit. Mainboard Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2V. My LCD is a HDTV monitor which is plugged to onboard graphic card.
I don't know what happen with my Ubuntu. It sometimes goes black when I try to wake my PC when it's suspended previously. The screen is black, but I still can move mouse cursor. I also can do blindly click on stuff on screen (I could play a song last time by clicking randomly). This problem also happens sometimes when I switch back to PC from TV (My LCD is a HDTV monitor).
The only action I can do when it happened is reset my PC.

I'm running openSUSE 11.2 on a Thinkpad T61p with nvidia graphics. I'm running the proprietary nvidia driver. The battery ran very low and the computer suspended itself. After I woke it up, the desktop is completely black. After troubleshooting as much as I could, I did ctrl-alt-backspace, which brought me to a normal (non-black) login screen. However, as soon as I logged in, I was back to a completely black screen. But the system is operating.I rebooted the computer (warm reboot as well as cold restart) and each time the video is normal until I get to the desktop and all I get it black.Everything was normal until the pm suspend.Suspend has never worked exactly right, so I don't normally use it. But in this case, it used itself Next step: I logged in to console mode and looked at the logs. The only messages of interest seem to be in Xorg.0.log I found a couple error messages that might be of interest:
(II) LoadModule: "nouveau"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module nouveau
(II) UnloadModule: "nouveau"

I recently received a HP Pavilion dv9000 that the previous owner swore had some issues with it. I'm not so sure it had issues, but that's another story. Anyways, I downloaded Unbuntu 10.10 and burned it to a disk. The first time I booted up the machine I told it I wanted to try Ubuntu. I then left the machine and came back in 20min or so and it looked like it had successfully booted. However I quickly realized the screen was frozen. So I turned off the machine and decided I'd try again a few days later. Today I booted up the machine and I get to a black screen with Ubuntu on it with five dots below the wording. It freezes on this screen. I've rebooted several times but I keep getting to the same screen before it freezes.

I like to suspend my laptop when I close the lid. I have squeeze installed. When I open the laptop lid all lights indicated that it coming out of suspend but the monitor stays black. It is worse since I install the ati drivers for the card instead of the xorg. It did it with both but worse with nonfree drivers. I can get it to come out by ctrl alt f2 and the ctrl alt f7. However yesterday that did not work but that was the first time. My laptop is an acer 5251-1513 amd processor v120, and hd 4250 radeon

I tried out many distros on my desktop before experimenting with my oshiba Satellite A665 laptop with integrated intel graphics. Everything worked out as normal until I was testing Ubuntu on a live cd, I clicked install and it sent me back to the login screen before I had made an account. So I then chose to restart and it started glitching so I had to manually power off. Ever since then whichever distros I try to install, they face numerous errors. On Ubuntu and Peppermint they freeze on the 5 dots installation part and Linux Mint just has a permanent black screen. Even the current Peppermint OS (only distro i have)hangs on the 5 dots when trying to boot onto the computer. This has resulted me in a computer that cant do anything, i've tried the noquiet and nosplash options but they don't seem to work. I was thinking of installing Windows and maybe erasing the disk by installing another distro later?

So I pressed ctrl+alt+F3 and now my whole system is basically one big terminal - black screen and only accepts terminal commands. How do I go back to the 'normal' Ubuntu desktop screen? Rebooting only takes me back to the terminal command page described above. I can access root commands with sudo bash and my password, if fact all terminal commands seem to work. Is there a command I can use to go back to the regular desktop?

I was messing around with the screen orientation and thought it would be funny to orient it sideways. Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora. This is my main computer.

When I install Ubuntu 11.04 with Wubi, I get this freeze screen after I reboot and get past the Ubuntu splash screen: url
As you can see, it's a scrambled picture of my Windows desktop. This happens with every other version of Ubuntu also.
I'm running a 64-bit PC and I don't wanna waste another CD or use a USB to install, because I actually progress further in my efforts whenever I use Wubi.

I've been running Ubuntu 10.10 very smoothly for a while now. Decided to upgrade to 11.04 - managed to corrupt the hard disk the first time by letting the laptop hibernate part of the way through but reinstalled from a live CD of 11.04 and it's now working except for this issue.
If I shut the screen on my laptop (or press the screen off button) either the screen won't come back on or it will but frozen (I can move the mouse but not click on anything etc.) In this state music continues to play (from spotify under wine) and if I press my hibernate shortcut (power button) the computer hibernates, only to wake into the same situation. I've got a Dell Latitude D520, upgraded to a bigger hard disk and more ram - the ubuntu partition has 50gb. Windows is working fine.
Edit: I noticed a sticky thread which includes something about a blank screen but I think this is a different issue?

This obnoxious bar has just appeared in Smplayer at the top of the screen. It stays there even when I go full screen. Now full screen isn't full screen and there are black edges on both sides of the screen. I have not be able to figure out how to hide it. I do not need or want this onscreen display. How can I configure Smplayer to make this go away? How can I get my 16:9 full screen aspect ratio back? I have done nothing to mplayer or smplayer as far as editing any or changing any configuration files. I tried several videos and it displays on all of them. It was not there last time I used Smplayer.
