I have an Acer one with this peculiar operating system which I don't understand. I have had it a couple of years and it has hardly been used. It has always worked well and connected up to my WiFi until today when after it has booted I get 'internal fault. Hal has failed to initiate' and the Wifi connection does not work. I am perfectly familiar with Windows but I haven't a clue with this one. Have found a post on this forum relating to this fault but I am afraid it was double Dutch to me. I don't even know how to access it's inner system let along enter any commands.

i have huawei usb stick modem, i'm connecting to internet with wvdial command, i have configured the file "wvdial.conf" to be able to connect, everything works fine i guess but the update applet still show me the message

Just installed 10.04 on a Toshiba Portege laptop. Everything works fine except the LAN connection. Just doesn't connect. Based on what I know everything is on and enabled but no luck. The wireless works fin but can't connect to the network in my office through the standard cable. Installed the same operating system on a newer Toshiba (the second is my but the older one is a friends) and no issues at all. Wondering if it is a driver issue but can't figure it out. Am relatively new to Ubuntu but so far have found it easy to troubleshoot just reading posts and just trying out **** until it works. But this I've hit a brick wall.
Also ran in to a similar issue my work pc, except I had been working with it fine with 10.04 until I did a security update and puff... no more network. The eth1 connection is enabled and set to automatic but just can't connect to it. Sorry if I'm not providing enough info, just tell me if there is anything you need to know first and I'll post it.
Using 10.10 and have a wired connection that according to the system is connected, but when I open a browser I can't connect to any sites. What am I missing here? I can't for the life of me figure this out.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently tried out OpenDNS on my wired connection, however after it was slower than faster, I tried going back to the original settings that the connection had (so basically to Automatic DHCP).
For some reason the connection wouldn't connect again. So I thought I'd try deleting that connection and creating a new one, but this still doesn't work. When I try to connect using NetworkManager it just does the 'loading' icon for 30ish seconds then says disconnected.
My wireless still works fine however.
I'd very grateful as i'm worried i've messed up the ethernet port and I need it for when I got University in a couple of weeks
I've just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04. Everything worked fine, until I rebooted. Now I can not connect to my home wireless internet, so I can't re-enable third party software sources. I am currently using a different computer, so I know that our internet works. I checked the wireless switch on my laptop, and it says that wireless is enabled. I've rebooted, and it still doesn't work. I tried our wired internet, and that didn't work either (although I'm not sure if our wired internet works; we haven't used it in a few years)

When I boot with an USB (same OS) everything works fine... I can also boot with Puppy Linux (working in other partition) without any problem.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu on my windows pc with no problems....except for wireless that is. I have a USB Linksys WUSB54G adapter to access my 2WIRE, WEP network. The thing is, it shows up in the top right hand corner. It even gives me the signal strength. But when it comes to using Mozilla, it is never able to access a page. If I try to Ping something, it's unable to. So I thought maybe I need to use ndiswrapper with my .inf and .sys files from the driver for my windows. I installed it, and added the driver to it...everything went O.K. I check it and it says it's installed and working. Again, I can see the wireless networks, and "connect" but when I try to use the connection there is nothing. I have also tried my neighbours non-WEP connection, but it still doesn't work. So I'm sort of at a loss with what I should do now. I see the networks, can "connect" but can't browse. I installed the drivers from my windows, and it still doesn't work. I used a LIVE CD of Knoppix and I can connect to the Network within 30 seconds and start browsing the net.

It tells me there is no wired connection, when there is. I used sysinfo and its not showing any network adapter or controller. I have a board with nvidia nforce go 430, could it be a driver issue. It works fine in windows though. Tried using a wireless adapter and all is working. But why doesn't the wired ethernet connection work.

They try to connect then bang no connection. I would be able to make some headway I think but I have no basic skills with Ubuntu. I updated centos from 5.2 to 5.3 as recommended:

Update was successful (I didn't see any errors). Then I rebooted pc and found out that my web is extreamly slow. In httpd logs I found: php -> file_get_contents [URL] always dies (timeout error, but somedomain.com is fine, I can telnet it easy on 80) I was wounder if it's update problem and tried yum:

I installed from Ubuntu Karmic minimal, so i did install KDE.
i have update-manager-kde, update-notifier-kde and kpackage kit installed. for manual installing i use synaptic though.
in the repositry-manager the automatic updates are anabled (daily).
but it is not checking for updates. i checked manually in synaptic, and there are updates available.
so, how do i let it check automaticly for updates?
I've got a double boot system (Windows XP Pro and Ubuntu Maverick). Since I updated Grub2, Grub doesn't work anymore! I'd tried this (because I HAD that error). But since than, I'd a black screen (harddisk didn't anything, and Grub too...) And now, after using a couple of these commands via the Ubuntu Lucid Lynx Live CD I get a mini bash in Grub, but no entry's to one of the two systems! What's wrong, and what do I have to do? I have installed ubuntu and Centos 5 , but when i do sudo update-grub , the new centos 5 is not detected. Some days ago i did the same (i installed ubuntu , and then Centos 5) , but i had to format the hard disk because some problems i had. The thing is that in that first time update-grub worked , but now not , why? Shouldn't be detected this time too? I have to manually add the new entry to the grub no?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an HP DV6 3143se which has a Ralink 3090 wifi card in it.the only thing that doesn't work at the moment is the Wifi. I tried installing the Linux backports module, but the trouble is that sometimes, my home wifi network is shown on the list of available networks and most often, it's not. when the network does show up, and i click on it and enter my WPA2 password, it takes ages to handshake and then it tells me that my password is wrong. the same password works in windows 7 so something's not working.
when i try to disable and re enable wireless network on the network manager applet, i get a Wireless device not ready or Network manager not running message.

Update manager pops up telling me there are new updates, but clicking on the 'Install Updates' button does nothing.However, if I click on Settings, then just close the settings dialog,it then says 'Starting Update Manager' and when that finished, the 'Install Updates' will work, but I have to do this every time I restart the computer.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've recently bought a recycled computer for my office. The plan was to get an old cheap computer and use it to write LaTex documents but nothing else. However, I can't seem to get the thing to connect to the internet. I'm on a University network which has a funny setup but I don't think that's the problem.So here's the deal. I have tried this with 9.04, 10.04 and 10.10 and it hasn't worked. The computer recognizes the ethernet cable. If I issue the command "sudo mii-tool eth0" and get back "eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD, link ok". However, click on the networking logo on the top right, and click auto eth0, it tries to connect for about 30 seconds, then gives up. Unfortunately I'm pretty clueless when it comes to networking so I have no idea what to do to try to fix this.
