These days I wanted to connect to the internet on my laptop using a wired connection. When I inserted the ethernet cable, I was surprised to see that it doesn't work on Ubuntu 11.04. So I decided to boot into Windows and see if it works or not. And I found that it works without problems on Windows.
View 2 RepliesI recently tried out OpenDNS on my wired connection, however after it was slower than faster, I tried going back to the original settings that the connection had (so basically to Automatic DHCP).
For some reason the connection wouldn't connect again. So I thought I'd try deleting that connection and creating a new one, but this still doesn't work. When I try to connect using NetworkManager it just does the 'loading' icon for 30ish seconds then says disconnected.
My wireless still works fine however.
I'd very grateful as i'm worried i've messed up the ethernet port and I need it for when I got University in a couple of weeks
I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 using Wubi through Windows 7. It seems to be working but it will not connect to my wired internet connection. It tells me there is no wired connection, when there is. I used sysinfo and its not showing any network adapter or controller. I have a board with nvidia nforce go 430, could it be a driver issue. It works fine in windows though. Tried using a wireless adapter and all is working. But why doesn't the wired ethernet connection work.

I saw on a link in this forum, someone was having similar problem. However, when i tried the solution that was recommended/suggested to the person, it did not work for me.

We finally got internet in our apartment in China, but my husband was the only one home when the guy came to set it up (on his windows machine).
He connects by plugging in, then clicking a desktop icon labeled "Broadband Connection" where a box pops up with a username, a password box, and some buttons, one of which says "connect".
I am trying to figure out how to set this up on my netbook so that I can use the internet at home too. I have a feeling that even if I had been home when the setup guy came, he wouldn't have had a clue what to do with mine anyway.
On the WinXP machine: Connection Properties state that this is a PPPoE connection, with TCP/IP, QoS, and Deterministic Network Enhancer all checked. Under the security tab, unsecured passwords are allowed.
I have a HP Mini running Ubuntu Desktop 10.04, and I cannot get a wired connection to work. My network card is "Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)", and I have the restricted drivers for the card installed. Wireless works fine, though.

I am having difficulties connecting to my router with my Ubuntu 10.04 laptop. Wireless works fine and I can get a wired connection when I boot into Windows 7. In Network Connections there is no Auto eth0 listing and when I create a wired connection, as soon as I enter details, the 'Apply' button grays out! Am I missing some permissions?

I installed Ubuntu10.04, It cannot driver Wired network and wireless. Later I installed linuxMint9, wireless is ok, but wired network doesn't work. I am sure the lan cable is ok. It works in Windows.
View 3 Replies View Relatedwhat is the command to restart the network services? ive forgotten i think it uses -hup switch though. about 1 in 20 boots on my desktop ubuntu system results in the system insisting its no longer on a network yet has a fully functioning network card. a reboot always fixes the issue but that doesnt seem like a long term solution to me. If I ping a neighbouring system I get nothing. (sent packet count increases in ifconfig) If I ping from a neighbouring system back to my desktop I get nothing (no change in packet count) I can bring down and back up the network interface with no results. A sniffer shows the system definitely isnt sending anything out Everything worked previous boot and will work again after a reboot.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI cant get my wired internet connection to work. The command 'dpkg -s pppoeconf' returns ' installed ok installed'. My connection is through a router which is probably in a semi-bridge mode and I need to dial a connection to get the net started. The connection Auto eth0 is setup properly with the correct cloned MAC Address (that of my laptop).
I've also executed 'sudo pppoeconf' and ran the whole series of steps which towards the end said that my connection will be set on boot. However, the net doesnt work directly and I dont know how to dial manually either. 'sudo ifup eth0' returns 'interface eth0 already configured'. I tried some 10-15 threads but none worked. Ubuntu is handicapped without internet.
My desktop PC has 2 NICs. I have Ubuntu on it since several years, and I remember that both eth0 and eth1 used to work. However, I discovered recently that currently only eth0 works, and eth1 is dead, but I don't know why. It's been a while since I've tried eth1, so I have no idea when exactly it broke. I suspect the problem may be related to the fact that the MAC address is incorrect: it is set to 00:00:00:00:00:00, which seems wrong. But I have no idea how this happened...Any idea what might be wrong and how I can fix it? Here is some output which I think is useful:

With the graphics setting interface, I set auto proxy with the URL address but it is weird that the setting only work with eth1(wireless), doesn't work with etho(wired). however my wireless driver is always a problem for Linux. i also tried export http_proxy= XXXXX:8080 it still doesn't work at all.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having mysterious wired network problem with my Karmic/9.10 machine. It hasn't been in network a while, but now I finally got the cabling done. I can't get the IP from dhcp server (TW-EA510), and static settings doesn't work either. Fresh cabling showed OK 1Gb connection on tester, and win7 laptop works fine. I even tried with long cable though the rooms, but it doesn't help, so it definately isn't the new cabling.

Motherboard is some old Lanparty with two ethernet ports, NVidia CK804 and Marvell 88E800 rev 13 Gigabit netwok adapters, neither of them works. At least another of them has been worked earlier when I last got it wired. It's been a while, so I'm not sure which one of them and with different router if that matters.
I just installed Ubuntu on my windows pc with no problems....except for wireless that is. I have a USB Linksys WUSB54G adapter to access my 2WIRE, WEP network. The thing is, it shows up in the top right hand corner. It even gives me the signal strength. But when it comes to using Mozilla, it is never able to access a page. If I try to Ping something, it's unable to. So I thought maybe I need to use ndiswrapper with my .inf and .sys files from the driver for my windows. I installed it, and added the driver to it...everything went O.K. I check it and it says it's installed and working. Again, I can see the wireless networks, and "connect" but when I try to use the connection there is nothing. I have also tried my neighbours non-WEP connection, but it still doesn't work. So I'm sort of at a loss with what I should do now. I see the networks, can "connect" but can't browse. I installed the drivers from my windows, and it still doesn't work. I used a LIVE CD of Knoppix and I can connect to the Network within 30 seconds and start browsing the net.

I am fairly new to linux and I just bought a new computer. I have a dell inspiron N4010 and I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on it. I then was unable to connect with a wired connection or wireless. I am sure this is a driver issue I just don't know how to get the proper drivers. If I put my mouse over the wireless icon it says networking disabled. But the switch to enable networking is on the keyboard

They try to connect then bang no connection. I would be able to make some headway I think but I have no basic skills with Ubuntu. NetworkManager gets to the second green dot, and then after a short while I am given a message that the connection was disconnected.
Configuring the interface manually, not using DHCP, allows the connection to complete. However, the internet is very slow. There is a 15-30 sec delay before website loading actually commences, and then another delay each time an ad must be fetched from another server.How can I fix this delay? I know I have encountered it in earlier versions of Ubuntu, but I can't remember how I fixed it.About the rdesktop problem, if anyone is able to help [maybe I should post another thread?], the cursor color (the color of the pointer) is inverted---where it should be white it is black, and where it should be black it is white. I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 desktop on my desktop in dual boot with Windows 7.
Heres my problem, I am unable to connect to the Internet even though my wired Ethernet connection says it is connected normally. The wierd thing about this is that I also have a wireless card in my desktop and when I connect through that I am able to connect to the Internet. I am connecting to a router that is functioning as a repeater to my main router/cable modem. I have tried to solve this myself but am having no luck. Ironically, earlier today suddenly my ethernet connection worked for a few minutes without me modifying anything.

I have two PCs one has Windows XP the other has Ubuntu 9.10 on it, the Windows PC has no problems getting on the Internet (I'm posting this with it) and getting an IP address from the wired router. The wired router I have is ONLY wired it does not have wireless at all, it is currently setup to hand out IP addresses between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.254.
The Ubunutu 9.10 PC worked great last night surfed all over the place for hours, then finally shut it down last night when I went to bed, shut down appeared to be normal like it always does when it shuts down, then this morning when I booted it up it gave error: "WIRED NETWORK - disconnected you are now offline".
I am using ubuntu in my new office, and I can't get the network working. The "official" OS installed was a Windows, and it has a special "dial-up" app for the LAN connection (not wireless). My network admin is apparently not helpful, since he actually knows nothing about the internals for the "dial-up" app (he did not even ever heard of TTLS, PEAP, MD5, etc), and claimed that no OS except for Windows can work...
Well, I have tested various configurations with my Mac laptop, and apparently the LAN connection requires 802.1X authentication, and it's using a very weird combination "TTLS+PEAP+MD5" (if I check these options in Mac OS X, the connection works). However, in NetworkManager, I can't select both TTLS and PEAP, and moreover, TTLS does not work with MD5. So, is there anything I could try?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've had a computer running Ubuntu connected to my TV for a few weeks now, but as of yesterday, I can't get it to keep a connection to the Internet. Everything works well for an hour or so after a reboot, but then no WAN connections work. When this happens, no sites load in Firefox or Chrome, I can't ping Google, I can't SSH to the box from work, and none of the pages I have running on apache load from remote computers. However, all local area connections seem to work fine. SSH from within my LAN takes much longer than usual, but it does still connect.
