Ubuntu :: Allow One Program To Edit A Read-only Folder?
Nov 20, 2010
I use Deluge as a bittorrent client to download music.However, if--or rather when--other programs like rhythmbox edit the tags in the file (or change the file in anyway) deluge downloads the file againI thought that making the folder which Deluge downloads to a read-only folder would stop this from happening. But I need a way to allow Deluge to still be able to download to this folder.s there a way to do this

i log in and went to the policy folder to erase the file prefernces.fdi and it would not let me delete this file /move it to the trash or even edit it it said something like you are not the owner ,so i could not change the permissions to overwrite this file.what should i do i just want to be able to change this file to true so it will see my internal sc dar reader right now when i put in a sd card it does not show up.i also tried changing this in the terminal there was a post on one blog that showed how ,but i was having trouble edit the xml file in the terminal so for me it would be easier to just overwrite the prefernces.fdi file since im a beginner.

Recently I setup a system for a non-technical user. He is only using Firefox, Pidgin and OpenOffice for about 2 hours a day. I have created a folder "/home/jim/myFiles" where he can save his document files. But Jim has accidentally deleted his myFiles folder on 2 occasions. He had intended to delete a file in that folder. Is there a way to lock the folder so that the user and create/read/write documents in that folder but not delete the folder itself?

I was unable to boot into Ubuntu 9.1 today because the file system is now read only. When I check fstab, it shows "ro" but I can't change it because it's on a read only file system. I tried umounting the root then remounting with read/write access, but I was unable to umount the root. I also tried booting with a live CD, but all I can find is the root.disk file, I can't see any of the file structure. That's probably just how it is supposed to be, but I'm new to Linux so I found it strange. method to either change the disk to read/write besides this?sudo umount /mount -o remount,rw /The other option would be to somehow mount the disk image while using a live CD so that I can get to the fstab file and edit it.

I have apache2 running on my computer. I want to change the permissions for /var/www/ so that I can edit the files without a problem. Right now I can use the gksudo command, but I'd like to be able to have all the files available when using an IDE like eclipse.
I've read in several places that
Code:
chmod 755 /var/www
will do, but if I'm not mistaken that would give read/write access to anyone. I'm not in a production environment, so I'm not too worried about security, but I'd like to give anyone else as less permissions as possible. Would this be possible?

What is going on here? I can't access /etc/sshd_config to read or edit it, even as root. (Using debian-live 6.01)
root@debian:/etc# ls -l /etc/ssh*
total 132
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 125749 2010-02-28 01:37 moduli
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1616 2010-02-28 01:37 ssh_config
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2453 2010-03-13 17:32 sshd_config
[Code]...
I also checked the permissions for the parent file /etc, and root has rwx. Is this something peculiar to the overlay file system used in debian-live, or just another unix gotcha?

I'm a new Ubuntu user and a Python programmer, it's the first time that I use Python in Ubuntu so it's a bit confusing me. If I want to save a Module or something in a specified map, I get 'Errno 13', it says that I don't have permission to edit, do thing in that map. And this is also for importing files with Python. I logged in from Terminal with 'sudo -i' and closed Terminal, but the problem keeps repeating. How do I login as Admin or Root and stay as Admin or Root? I need right to edit/read files as well as root and normal user.
An example:
Python file:
test.py ->
test = open('/a.txt', 'w')
test.write('Test - Test - Test')
test.close
When I execute this, I get in the Python IDLE the 'Errno 13' problem and below the 'Errno 13' it says that I don't have permission. Who know how to stay logged in as root, even if the user has not logged in or isn't this possible, if it isn't then I just want to get files moving, editing/erasing etc.

I am trying to edit my grub.conf file. I am logged in as root. It says it is a read only file. I have tried to set permission with chmod 777 and also tried through GUI. Using VI it says it's a read only file. Using nano it will not write either. I have two choices on boot up. I want to automatically go to second automatically. First at the moment is CentOS-4 i386 (2.6.9-55.ELsmp) and second is CentOS-4 i386 (2.6.9-55.EL).

I haven't put this in the forums for any of the separate programs, because im having the same problem in all of them, im thinking maybe its a problem elsewhere?I recently got a Canon DSLR. It can save in Raw format, I use this function. Canons Raw format is "Whatever.CR2"F spot viewer and all editor programs see then and 'preview' them with no problem. The images appear to have no problem until you load them into GIMP (with UFRAW) UFRAW standalone, RAWStudio etc.
They load, but only as a small vertical rectangle. Often very purple in colour.I thought maybe it was something wrong with just the way it looked, so I just loaded one, went save as (a jpeg) and then loaded it up, it loaded as a small picture of the same purple-haze bar.Have I done something wrong? I googled it, downloaded UFRaw, even Ubuntu studio, same problem before and after studio installation. All these programs claim to read raw images.Just as an example, In RawStudio:I load up the folder of raw images. I can see all the images clearly with no problems in the preview slider up top. I can scroll through them and see them all no problem. When I click on one, it loads in the editing box as some weird bar (always vertical in orientation) often faintly resembling part of the photo but with seriously acid trip colours. Eg massive purple hazes, green everything etc.

So I've been trying to find a program to edit grub ,so that I'll be able to add a picture behind the letters add new lines,and change the name of the menus. I know in Backtrack that I used a program,I don't really remember which one it was,I think KGrubEditor,but that is a KDE app,and I cannot find a place where I could download it anyway. Do you guys know any alternative,or any way I could do this? I know how to edit grub.cfg,but I want some features besides that.

I have a Gateway NV53 with a built in webcam.Now my issue is, it DOES work, but is there a program or software available that would allow me to edit the live graphical feed of the camera? For example, on Windows the webcam software allows me to edit the saturation, contrast, brightness, etc the levels of it while I'm giving off a live feed.So while I'm on webcam 0 can basically change the saturation level while I'm on skype and go from live in color to live in black and white? Is there a rogram available to UBuntu that would allow me to do the same thing?SO that if I'm doing a live feed of my webcam I can basically change how much color I am in etc.I'm running ubuntu 10.10 if that matters

I was able to convert a Real Estate Firm from using Microsoft OSS to OpenSuse 11.2.The Real estate agents in the firm are pleased and some are not but it's the cost of doing business and saving money.I am at a cross road or should I say I have come to a bump in the road. Most of the agents create their flyers and signs in Microsoft Publisher, I tried Open Office 3.X and I'm unable to open or edit the files in question.Do have any suggestions or could you point me in the direction of a solid solution that will help me either convert the files or a program that can be used with-in OpenSuse 11.2 that can edit the files

I tried working with the nautilus-action configuration tool but to no avail. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I just dual booted Open SUSE on my computer, and am pretty happy with it. But, in order to use my wireless card for it, I need to install a driver. The wireless card is a Realtek 8191 SE. I've downloaded a driver, but I have no idea how to configure it. I've tried pasting the files into /lib/firmware, but it won't allow me to edit or paste any files into the folder.

I accidentally changed etc., folder ownership, and now my computer doesn't even start up. I tried starting up in failsafe mode and changing the ownership from the root console, but somehow I wasn't allowed to do that. Then I loaded kubuntu from a live disk and I changed etc ownership to root. I thought that would clear up the mess, but apparently live disk's root is not equivalent to system's: when I try to start up the computer I get a message saying the filesystem is readonly. I'm not too concerned, because I have a complete backup, but I'd rather avoid the time of re-installing all my software again.

Just finished downloading a game in .run format, i downloaded it to my Home>Downloads folder and ran these commands in terminal: (game is tremulous if it matters)
chmod +x tremulous.run
./tremulous.run
It started it up in the terminal and i began working my way through the installation process, and i tried to install it into my Home>Games folder. (Is it supposed to be home>games or your username>games?)
and it said PERMISSION DENIED. No write permission to Home/Games/
How do i give myself read and write permissions to my game folder?

Recently updated the kernel in Ubuntu 9.10 and for some reason now, a folder which was not read-only now is. I can't delete anything from it. Have tried using the GUI for changing permissions, however, it has a mind of it's own and won't unlock the folder.
Anyone had this happen where a folder locked when you didn't want it to be?

Quick question. I need to ensure that all my files within specific folders are marked as being read only if the folders name is 'Forms' for example. There may be many 'forms' folders on the server within many different directories.It is a requirement that everything within these folders are marked as being read only but people are not doing so for whatever reason, and would therefore like for it to be done automatically i.e. a script executed by a cron job every eve to esnure that all files within the forms directories are marked read only.

I have a weird problem here with a 9.04 server. We have a raid 5 disk formatted in EXT4 which remounted automatically when we accessed to the lost+found folder which is in the root of that disk.
I tried to delete it but I can't. It's a bit annoying because I have to prevent all users and backups to access to that folder.

I'm using Ubuntu and I'm programing with eclipse CDT. My goal is to execute a php file and read the output to my c++ program. To do so I thought I should use fork(), dup2() and execl. When in shell, the call "php myscript.php" worked just fine, but when in c++ I tried:
execl("usr/bin/php", "php", "home/geiger/workspace/SemiServer/server_content/myscript.php", NULL);
And it didn't work (the process wasn't terminated and I got no output). I tried different version of this call, like losing the "php" string and/or drop "home/geiger" from the path string, to no better result.
