Fedora Servers :: User Setting - FTP - View / Edit Files In One Certain Folder
Apr 17, 2010
I have installed Fedora 12 x86_64 and vsftpd. I would like to set up an user for FTP so that he/she could only view/edit files in one certain folder (the one that I set up). How would I go about doing that?

Recently I setup a system for a non-technical user. He is only using Firefox, Pidgin and OpenOffice for about 2 hours a day. I have created a folder "/home/jim/myFiles" where he can save his document files. But Jim has accidentally deleted his myFiles folder on 2 occasions. He had intended to delete a file in that folder. Is there a way to lock the folder so that the user and create/read/write documents in that folder but not delete the folder itself?

That in essence is my question. It is much easier to open a music folder in nautilus when you need to edit tags of music files.
I tried working with the nautilus-action configuration tool but to no avail. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I'm sorry if this has been posted already but I REALLY did look and couldn't find the same issue(s) addressed anywhere. Similar, but not similar enough, in my opinion, to barge in and switch the subject.
Ok, I have Apache httpd set up so I can use a public_html folder inside of my /home/username directory. Now, I'm about to take a web dev course that teaches JSP/Servlets for building web applications and I'd like to set my environment up so that I can execute .jsps from my web root (/home/username/public_html) just like I would a CGI or PHP script. I have a web host that will give me JSP support for a few extra bucks a month, but I'd rather do it locally... and free.
I have Tomcat installed and running wonderfully. The test page and all the examples work fine and execute immediately. But when I try to execute a .jsp file inside of my web root (/home/username/public_html) I just get the raw Java tags and plain-old HTML rendered in my browser. I pretty much knew that wouldn't work; that'd be way too easy. I just wanted to see what would happen.
I looked through all the tomcat ".conf" files I could find to see if it was similar to setting up httpd inside of my home directory, but I didn't have any luck. It's not a file permissions problem... I've been messing with web "scripts" long enough to check that the files are executable. All of the files needed (borrowed from the examples that come with Tomcat) were in their correct paths inside of my web root, as well. Added :8080 to the end of localhost (like you do to see the Tomcat test page(s) instead of the httpd test page) but that didn't help.
I scoured the web for directions but could only find one solution that was Ubuntu-specific (just install tomcat6-user-something-or-another.deb, which doesn't exist in the Fedora repos), then I looked around here, trying every search term that seemed reasonable to me, and I can't find anything.
I realize I can just write the code and put it in a directory that does allow these things to be executed (var/lib/tomcat6/blah-blah-blah/going-by-memory) and run them from there, but I'd like to be able to just keep all of my web files in the same place; a place where I have full permission to do whatever I want... my home directory public_html.
Is this possible (has to be, right?)? Is this a dumb idea to begin with (I'm prone)? What is the best way to develop JSP/Servlets without having to deal with permissions every time I want to put a new script in a directory outside of my home directory that's already set up to allow the execution of said script?

For the purpose of running a transmission daemon I have a user called torrent.
I've chowned the download folder and all its contents to torrent:torrent and set permissions so that user/group can read/write.
The transmission daemon is running as the user torrent but I get a "permission denied" error when trying to download. It also won't seed because it can't read the files.
I've tried su-ing as torrent and viewing the folder, I can't do that either but when I use "ls -al" as an administrative user I get "-rwxrwxr-x 1 torrent torrent" or "drwxrwxr-x 4 torrent torrent" (if it's a directory).
This happened after a big upgrade but I can't work out what's going on. I previously had a user called "transmission" doing the same but decided to try deleting that user and starting again to get it to work. As you can see, no such luck.

I just dual booted Open SUSE on my computer, and am pretty happy with it. But, in order to use my wireless card for it, I need to install a driver. The wireless card is a Realtek 8191 SE. I've downloaded a driver, but I have no idea how to configure it. I've tried pasting the files into /lib/firmware, but it won't allow me to edit or paste any files into the folder.

I'd like to configure vsftpd server in a way to allow remote user (local) too see and edit configuration files in their ftp directory starting from dot (like .htaccess, for example). With default configuration + "local_allowed = yes" it does not appear to be possible:user can successfully upload .file but could neither see if it is in directory nor download it.

Vanilla install of Karmic (64 bit) - would like to change the Apache doc root to point to /home/sam/www as it's my web development machine. (Default install is working fine)
Created copy of 'default' to 'mylocal' in '/etc/apache2/sites-available'
Code:
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost
DocumentRoot /home/sam/www
<Directory />
Options FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None
</Directory>
<Directory /home/sam/www/>
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews
AllowOverride None
Order allow,deny
allow from all
</Directory>
...
The permissions on the folder in my home dir:
Code:
sam@rocket:~$ ls -la ww*
total 16
drwxrwxrwx 2 sam sam 4096 2010-01-09 22:26 .
drwx------ 35 sam sam 12288 2010-01-09 22:11 ..
-rwxrwxrwx 1 sam sam 100 2010-01-09 22:27 index.html
sam@rocket:~$ pwd
/home/sam
sam@rocket:~$
The sites enabled set up:
Code:

total 8
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2010-01-09 22:24 .

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 2010-01-09 22:24 mylocal -> ../sites-available/mylocal
But I still get:

When I try to view ~ in nautilus, the animation in the upper right corner just spins indefinitely. It happens when I run nautilus as root too.Typing "ls -la" in the home folder will cause the term to freeze. Neither "ls -a" or "ls -l" by themselves cause it to freeze The freezing only happens in ~ to my knowledge.The freezing terminal also ONLY happens in xterm, inside gnome. Through ssh I can display the folder contents just fine, and I don't see any strange file names that might be causing an issue.I tried following advice I found, I believe on this site, to "rm -rf ~/.gvfs"I feel that I may e overwritten a fedora-specific library somewhere when trying to compile different things. I don't recall this being an issue immediately after upgrading from fc10 to fc12, though it could have conceivably gone unnoticed.

You'd think it was not a big deal... but i'm running out of space!! and the .image is 90 odd gb. I know i "could" just get the disk and copy the files off she wants... but that would be too easy

Some shortcuts are outdated because of new installation of opensuse 11.2...
How can I add icons there in?
I can add icons to the Desktop and Taskbar but no in this Folder View on the Desktop (BTW: Is this Panel called "Folder View applet"?)
If I try to move a icon from Desktop to this Panel it is not moved in this panel it is placed behind this Panel...
And how can I get more than one of this panels for example one displays the Desktop folder other the home dir ...

Running kubuntu 11.04x64 w/ xrender and folder-view plasmoid:
I cannot view "open with" for directories on the desktop (but it is visible w/in dolphin file structure) and whenever I try to rename folders on the desktop it crashes and restarts (but the rename is successful and no open windows crash).
This glitch is reproducible under OpenGL and Xrender; had to switch over to xrender after a recent system update that seems to slow my computer to a crawl after a little time and kept it cause it seems much smoother and crisper.
Is there any way to fix these issues or is there an alternative to the folder-view plasmoid to view a folder content on the desktop that is more stable?

I'm setting up a network between 2 pc's where the one should act like "file server" and a normal pc to surf on internet.called ORLA-DESKTOP and the other pc is called OLGA-DESKTOP a pc connecting to the server and automounting the shared folder to the desktop Both pc's run ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx The shared folder is located on the server in /home/orla/svenson
ORLA-DESKTOP have 2 users "olga" and "orla" in a group called "svenson"
OLGA-DESKTOP have 1 registered user "olga" also in group called "svenson"
users on ORLA-DESKTOP can read/write/append and so on and fully manage everything in the shared folder.But on OLGA-DESKTOP the user can make a file on the pc and then drag'n'drop the file the the shared folder, and can also delete files in the shared folder. but cannot create a file directly into the folder like on ORLA-DESKTOP I have 3 configuration files made. 2 for automounting, Located on OLGA-DESKTOP 1 for samba server configurations located on the server ORLA-DESKTOP
The first one is /etc/fstab
Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier
# for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name
# devices that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
[code]....
To sum it all up the real problem is that OLGA-DESKTOP can't append to files in the shared folder. but users on the server have no troubles doing it..
