Fedora :: Change Nautilus To Default Ubuntu And Not Open Each Folder In Separate Window But Can't Go To Edit/Preferences?
Sep 20, 2009
I have just installed F11 and want to change Nautilus to default Ubuntu and not open each folder in separate window. But I can't go to Edit/Preferences.Nautilus keeps crashing and I get this report:Quote:
Distribution: Fedora release 11 (Leonidas)
Gnome Release: 2.26.3 2009-07-07 (Red Hat, Inc)
BugBuddy Version: 2.26.0

Is there a alternate way to open the Nautilus Preferences Window (http://i.imgur.com/hCffn.gif)? I cannot open it via Edit -> Preferences (the option is not there). I removed Nautilus-Elementary and I think that messed up something.

That in essence is my question. It is much easier to open a music folder in nautilus when you need to edit tags of music files.
I tried working with the nautilus-action configuration tool but to no avail. Can someone point me in the right direction?

bug with nautilus 2.26.3? It seems to be an issue on the gnome side rather than on Fedora's side because a Debian bug report has pretty much the same error that I'm getting.

Is there a way to set the default when clicking on a folder to open in new window? The default action appears to open in the same window. I've gone though every Dolphin option I can find, and there does not appear to be any setting that affect this. Konqueror DOES have a setting, but it seems to be ignored. I am running Suse 11.3, KDE 4.4.

I basically am hoping for a line of bash script I can put into "Open With" for folders so I can get a terminal with the right path. I hate manually typing in paths to places when I am looking right at them in nautilus. "gnome-terminal" doesn't work - it just opens a terminal to ~.

How to change:
(1) My preferred File Management program, the one that kicks off when I use Places? and
(2) The amount of time before the display is put to sleep?
I DO NOT WANT TO USE A GUI FRONT END to do this. The reason is (1) my preferred File Manager, Xfe, is not listed as one of the options by Preferred Applications. And (2) Power Management Preferences allows 10 or 30 minutes before putting the display to sleep but I want 20 minutes. I need to know what files contain these configurations so I can edit them directly.

My system boots, I login and am brought to my desktop. I click on the file system icon in the launcher to open a Nautilus window. The window opens, but is unresponsive (i.e., I can't move it, clicking on the icons does nothing, etc.). If I press the super key to get the dash and the press escape, the window becomes responsive again, just like normal.
If I open a folder in the window, the window becomes halfway unresponsive in that I can't move the window, but I can select more folders and toolbar icons. The top menu no longer appears at this point, and I can't access any of the system icons on the top right of the screen. Alt-F4 closes the window even if the close button doesn't work.As another example, suppose I open a Nautilus window and then a Chromium window. Both are immediately unresponsive. If I super-esc again, I can move the Chromium window around, and it seems to work normally. I can click on the Nautilus window, but it always stays greyed out. Even if I'm clicking on things in it, the Chromium window always has focus.
I had a similar experience to this with VLC and Chromium. After clicking around enough I eventually got it to the point where VLC apparently always had focus, but I couldn't access any of VLC's controls. Double clicking anywhere on the screen fullscreened the video, and that's all I could really do. Not even escape worked to bring it back.I can usually press super to get the dash and Alt-F2 to get a command prompt. Also Alt-Shift-T seems to usually work to bring up a working Terminal (at least one that accepts commands, even if I can't move the window).Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? The behavior is highly unpredictable and extremely frustrating. I should note that key commands don't always work, even though they seem to in my examples. So I don't think it's just a mouse issue.

Every time I try to change file or folder permissions on a separate internal drive in ubuntu 10.10 desktop in sudo file manager, It sets it right back to the way it was before and doesn't save the permissions I want to change it to. The files aren't critical system files that are not even existent on this hard drive.
Its on a completely separate drive, Yet aren't I suppose to be in control of what gets changed to what? Instead of a Operating System doing something just for my safety? A simple AVI files permissions being changed shouldn't hurt anything. How to I stop ubuntu 10.10 from auto setting the permissions of my folders and files? Its really starting to me off right now. I've been looking around on google for Auto reset permissions for ubuntu, Haven't found one word about it. Yet I'm just going to assume someone might know how to resolve this? Or has dealed with this before.
I'm just trying to Forcefully set my folders on my separate drive all to 777 because they are all 775 and 755 and I can only access them with Write privileges if I run the SUDO file manager which I really hate having to do every so often I'm sure you can relate to how annoying it is to have to open up terminal and type something in to open a fully priviledged file manager.

Can someone please tell me if there is a way to have Nautilus open with the extra pane by default? I use it quite often and would like it to open that way. I have been searching but seem to only find fixes for Gnome on Jaunty and earlier versions.

I just upgraded from Maverick 10.10 to 11.04 64-bit and I have the following problem: every program that provides an "open file or folder" function such as synapse -> open folder, firefox downloads open folder, deluge open, instead of opening nautilus in the desired folder (default behavior of 10.10), it just opens a gnome-terminal.

I was messing around with different GUI sessions, and I wanted to try XFCE. Well, I switched to XFCE for a session, and I played around in it. When I went back to a Gnome session, however, it appears that Thunar is now the default filesystem explorer.I get the Thunar explorer. I want the Nautilus explorer. How do I fix this issue?

Currently if I have folder "/abc/def/ghz" open on Nautilus and I want to run a terminal command on that folder I have to manually open the terminal and go to that folder.I'd like to know if there is a way to have a button or a short cut that'd allow me to open the terminal right in the desired folder.Something like pressing CTRL ALT and have the terminal popup in the the current folder.

I just had a quick question. I would like to burn a DVD to disc. The VOBs in the Video_TS folder have 3 Audio tracks: Stereo, Surround, Mono. By default it plays the Stereo track. Is there any way to change this? ffmpeg -i [insert_video_location] in the terminal gives me:
Code:
Stream #0.0[0x1e0]: Video: mpeg2video, yuv420p, 720x480 [PAR 32:27 DAR 16:9], 9800 kb/s, 29.97 tbr, 90k tbn, 59.94 tbc
Stream #0.1[0x80]: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, stereo, s16, 384 kb/s
Stream #0.2[0x81]: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, 5.1, s16, 448 kb/s
Stream #0.3[0x82]: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, mono, s16, 96 kb/s
Will 0x80 always be the default? Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but I'm going to be playing these discs on a DVD Player without a remote (can't help it), so I won't be able to switch the audio on the fly, and they have no menus. You put it in, and it goes straight to the movie.

There's something very annoying about how Nautilus opens "image viewer" windows.
They open, I can see them, but when I press the keyboard, it's still Nautilus which gets the commands.
This is because Nautilus stays the active window!
Most annoyingly, when I want to have a quick look at an image, and then close it, Nautilus closes instead (Alt+F4).
Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
How to solve it?

behavior in 9.04:plugged in a disk, mounted it and it as readable to the world.this is intended because it is shared via samba.behavior in 10.04:the disks have 700, meaning, they are not readable by samba.this is a problem.this is the best solution I've found so far:http://www.mail-archive.com/ubuntu-u.../msg10951.htmlexcept, that the mentioned means to fix this are gone.(gconf-editor -> ..., storage and preferences -> removable media)after 3 hours of googleing and reading I'm rather upset about this bug.so please, if you are thinking of suggesting fixed entries in the fstab or anything else that will not work with every media that is plugged into this box, just close this tab.

In the kde realm, with the dolphin file browser, I can open a terminal in whatever folder is in the gui by using the shift and f4 keys. I'd like to be able to accomplish the same in gnome with the nautilus file browser but can't figure out how to do same. So far I have to open a terminal and then cd to the desired folder. Or do I have to use some other file browser and which one?

I noticed that by default most of my programs start with their window on the top left (at least with my configuration) and I'd like them to start at the middle of my screen. Here's an example. I open (for the first time after logging in) System monitor, and it appears there:URL]How can I do this? I would also like them (the windows) to remember where I've placed them the last time I've used, for example, I want pidgin to start on the right and at the bottom, chrome in the middle, nautilus a bit at the top right, ... how can I do thisDIT: Ok, in Compiz there's an option to put it on the middle, with a 'smart' position, ... but nothing to remember the last position and size!

I would like to change my default window manager to sawfish. There are many instructions on the web to install sawfish, log out, then select sawfish, then log back in. This worked for me with karmic, but I'm not seeing any way to select a window manager during the lucid log in process. (Sawfish is running fine if I start it with "killall compiz && sawfish &" during an ongoing session.)

I recently preformed a full update to my openSuSe 11.3 x64 + gnome install. Everything was running fine before the update however post a number of features have stopped working or have changed. I used the command zypper up to update everything. The errors I've been recieving are as follows, Wastebasket
Won't open on via Desktop or Places menu. Gives the following error "Could not display "trash:" File Is Of An Unknown Type". If I drop things on the Wastebasket the files do go to /home/USERNAME/.local/share/Trash/files but I can't Empty Wastebasket upon right click as the option is highlighted out.
Computer Icon If I try to open it from link in Places menu I get the error Nautilus cannot handle "computer" locations.. The link to it has also disappeared from the left hand panel if I have a Nautilus window open.
Mounted Icons Previously I used to have 4 drives mounted;
1 network (NFS),
1 encrypted (TrueMount),
2 Windows (partitions of main machine)
Out of these only the encrypted and network drive showed on the Desktop and two Windows drives would stay mounted under /windows but have no icon on the Desktop. After the update, all these drives are on the desktop and but the only way to not have them appear on Desktop is to set Gnome config not to show any of the icons on Desktop. Although these are independent errors, they are all related to folders (at least indirectly) so I felt it was better to group them together to give a better picture of the issue.
