View 1 RepliesSo I bought an eMachine e250 from a friend of mine, and installed Backtrack on it. That worked fine, until I realised that I didn't like KDE, and decided to get the gnome-based Gnacktrack (based on Ubuntu 10.10, so I'm fairly sure they work the same). I also have a harddrive from an old laptop that I've scrapped with Ubuntu 10.4 that I run in the laptop, and fpr some bizzare reason, neither operating system is able to detect the wireless card. It worked fine with Backtrack (based on Noppix I believe), and I'm curious as to why the wireless card hates Ubuntu so much. I know that it's unable to detect the wireless card because on start-up it says "Unable to detect WMID device". I even added the wireless card from my scrapped laptop to the laptop, and that NIC was detected just fine. (though I can't use it because the antenna won't reach the slot for the secondary NIC)
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm not 100% if that's what it says, because it goes by in like a second.
But when I boot up my computer, the screen stays black for a while, then gives me that error. But then it loads up Ubuntu successfully with no problems.
I was just hoping to fix this, because it causes it to take a while to boot up.
I'm using debian lenny, I bought a new Hp officejet j4500 scanner but the xsane is unable to detect the scanner. It says device not found. If I run xsane as root it detects and works properly it is obvious.I have added the user to scanner, saned and also to root user group.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've recently purchased a new laptop of ACER(aspire 5750). I've installed two OS(win-7 & ubuntu 10.04 LTS). Till now, on my ubuntu every things working fine except i can't able to access my cable model broadband.
I open up the "Network connections" section & at there i saw it can't able to detect any WIRED connection.
I've checked my all my ethernet jack & all rest of connection. All r perfect. But, don't know why it can't able to detect my broadband. But, in windows section, broadband is working fine.
NOTE: ACER aspire 5750 using Broadcom netlink 57785 gigabit ethernet PCIe
how it is possible to make it work??On Skype i can only talk without video.T
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer Aspire One 1551 netbook. After I installed Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix (my first Ubuntu, though), I discovered that wi-fi device isn't being recognized - ifconfig says that I only have ethernet device present.Somehow rfkill list indicates, that acer-wireless is always blocked. How to unblock it? rfkill unblock 0 doesn't resolve the issue - device is still blocked.somehow 'Fn+WiFi' combination on keyboard activates/deactivates Bluetooth instead of WiFi. Can I alter the behavior of the combination to turn on/off wireless networking? I googled for a while but fruitlessly. Is it a known problem? Is there a workaround for it already? Is there any additional information (clues) I can provide to speedup the process a bit?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a pair of special radio-devices which support SNMP, but the problem is, that if I snmpwalk those devices, I only see few generic values(sysContact, sysDescr, sysServices etc) and nothing else. Most likely I need MIB files so NMS could know what values can be asked from the radio devices? If yes, is there a possibility to get all the OID's device supports without MIB files as those devices have been out or production for years?

I have a RIPLinux/Tinycore live USB disk that automatically needs to run a script that is stored on the same USB drive but not part of the RIPLinux/Tinycore image. (Please note that I do not want to put this script into the RIPLinux image.) I therefore would like to remix the RIPLinux/Tinycore ISO to automatically run this script once it has started up. After RIP linux has booted I would like to automatically mount the USB drive that RIPLinux/Tinycore was booted from. I need help detecting which device this is.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been attempting to install Ubuntu 10.10 on my Acer Aspire One for a few days now. Its current OS is Win7 Starter, if that even matters.
-I made a USB drive and Ubuntu boots and runs just fine.
-I hit the "install Ubuntu" icon and it has me choose my language, then I hit forward.
-It asks if I want to install updates and/or third party apps, I check the boxes and hit forward - and then it just sits there with the cursor spinning like its trying to do something, but it never does. The longest I have let it sit there was four hours, and still nothing happened.
**This is the step it always stops on. Could the problem be that I am trying to install the desktop version instead of the netbook version? I tried the netbook version and I just don't like it as much.
When trying to hybernate the system tries to prepare to hybernation but when it is going to complete the operations it does not hybernate but finally suspends.
note that it is not exactly the same as choosing to suspend. In fact, it seems to me that when choosing to hybernate the system is unable to do it and consequently it chooses "at least" to suspend.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just compiled my first own kernel (I'm using Arch Linux), following the tutorial on the german site. Now I tried to boot it, I ended up failing with this message: Code: Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/sda1 ... Root device '/dev/sda1' doesn't exist, Attempting to create it. ERROR: Unable to determine major/minor number of root device '/dev/sda1' Here is the important part of my menu.lst:

I simply copy&pasted the Arch-entry, i.e. I also had the disk by uuid there. The failure message was the same, just the root device name was the different name Also, at first I did not have the initrd line in my menu.lst (as written in my tutorial that I may not need it). In this case I had this error message:

I am running 11.04 with a dual boot of vista. I am also running virtualbox (downloaded from oracles site) I installed the extension pack from their website, I have added a new filter and I am in the user group but still virtualbox will not see the usb ports or the device plugged in. The reason for running virtualbox is if I can get the usb to work, I will then remove vista completely from my system and just virtualbox for the only two programmes that do not work in Ubuntu.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently installed ubuntu 10.10 on my aspire 3000 and everything seemed to work just fine... until I tried to activate desktop effects. tu put it simple, it just don't work. I checked and doubled-checked the lsmod | head to make sure that my drivers (sisfb / sis_drv.so) were installed and loaded. they were. I then made sure that my pc was opengl-supporting (Glxinfo | grep "direct rendering". The answer was positive. With that in mind, I tried many different ways to run compiz(compiz --replace, appearance-desktop effect, run app-compiz) but neither if these gave any results.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell M6400, using Wubi for Windows 7 x64. My ISP sets my router password at source, meaning I'm unable to disable wireless encryption (which is WPA 2 Personal). That being said, I don't seem to be able to detect *any* wireless networks (I can still connect via ethernet, which does not require the password).
I'm not certain where the problem is, so I'll outline my steps and what the results were:
Under "System > Administration > Hardware Drivers" I have the "Broadcom STA proprietary wireless driver" installed (for BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4321-, and BCM4322- based hardware)
The driver is activated and currently in use. When I type
"nm-tool", I get NetworkManager disconnected
