Ubuntu :: Able To Click Anything In GIMP With Pen - Wacom And Unity / Compiz Incompatibility
Jul 3, 2011
When working in GIMP using a Wacom pen (which I do a lot), not all the lines I draw show up. Maybe every 1 in 5 lines, just don't show up, and it's like the brush outline freezes. This becomes pretty annoying when drawing, which is why I log in standard GNOME without effects when using GIMP.
There is a minor problem that I think may be related, and that is that sometimes when I open a windows in GIMP, such as the Save or Open dialog, I won't be able to click anything in it with my pen. I then need to click the canvas in the background, and after that everything works. It seems as though the brush is stuck on the canvas, which is similar to what happens when drawing. I've tried different compiz settings with vSync and others, but nothing that made this work. This also seems to only be a problem when using a Wacom pen, and not when using the mouse.

I have been recently using the GIMP, transferring from adobe photoshop. and the truth is i have been pleasantly surprised with GIMP, especially when comparing prices from the two. Anyway the one thing i have not been able to do, that i assume is possible is make a brush that i am able to sketch with with my wacom tablet.
what i mean by this is in adobe i was able to create a brush that would react affectively to the pressure senstivity and i would get nice realistic looking sketches that looked like pencil sketches. when i barley pressed on my tablet i would be light and when i pressed hard i was able to get the black line needed. i have messed around with the pressure settings on the brushes but havent noticed any difference when i press hard on my tablet or barely press at all.

I have a wacom bamboo pen and touch (cth460/056a:00d1). Completed is the driver compile and installation to support this device. It is working. Is there anything special I need to do to accommodate Gimp (ieressure sensitivity) and dual monitors (ie:width)? Any particular command or config app? I know about xinput, wacomcpl, and xsetwacom.

I have a Fujitsu Stylistic st6012 tablet with a wacom digitizer built in. With UNE 10.04 the stylus was working fine, the buttons/rocker did left and right clicks. After upgrading to 10.10 the stylus was still working, but the buttons were not.I could click by tapping with the stylus, but to access menus in applications, or even shutdown menu, I have to keep pressing the stylus against the tablet. If I just tap, the menu will appear for a brief millisecond and then disappear again. Like what happens when you double-click with a mouse.
After some searching I have managed to get the stylus buttons to work - setting button closest to the tip as leftclick and the other as rightclick. The clicking works as expected inside applications, and when the applications menu-bar is on a line of its own - not on the same line as close, minimise, maximise, tray-icons, shutdown... In applications where the menu is moved up on the same line as close/minimise/maximise.the clicking must be done by click-hold - if I click-release the menu would go away.So that is problem number 1. Not sure if it is Maximus that is creating the top panel?
Next, the even bigger problem:The leftside icons menu introduced with UNE 10.10 is not behaving well with my stylus.Sometimes the very first tap/click on an icon launches that application. Subsequent taps/clicks on ANY icon does nothing. Only nudges the icon, scrolls the bar slightly or nothing at all.Other times not even the first tap/click launches anything. This makes the OS and my tablet utterly useless After getting the stylus buttons to work, rightclicks actually works on the icon-bar (unity?), bringing up the menu with name and Remove from Launcher options. But it does not respond to taps or leftclicks - other than making the rightclick-menu disappear.NOTE: the icons-bar and menus work as they should using an external mouse, so the problem must be related to the wacom stylus.
Here is some values from xsetwacom:
kris@kris-st6012:~$ xsetwacom --get "Serial Wacom Tablet" TPCButton
on

I recently purchased a Wacom Bamboo Pen Only (CTL-460). It's a great device and in Fedora 15 (x86_64) it worked out-of-the-box like a charm!
I don't miss the rubber or the extra keys on the tablet. But I'm having quite some trouble, using the pen as a mouse replacement in all day use. The following is with respect to usage outside GIMP and Inkscape (i.e. Firefox, Nautilus etc). What I would really like to have, is:
+ scrolling by pressing the "first button" and simply _moving_ the pen. Just like with my Thinkpad-Trackpoint: Here I press the middle key and can then scroll just by controlling the Trackpoint. Would already be cool, if I could scroll by pressing the "first button" and touching the tablet. A short tap while pressing the "first button" should still be a "middle click"!
Code:
Found a solution for "jamming at the edge of the screen". Just resized the "area" a bit (smaller) with xsetwacom...

I've had the problem that my Wacom Intuos 3 tablet seems very slow under gimp while booted into unity desktop. Doesn't seem to be a problem in other painting software like MyPaint and doesn't seem to be a problem when I log into ubuntu classic Gnome desktop rather than Unity.

I am really happy with my Slackware installation but I encountered a problem using Gimp, I would like to know if it's just me or really the problem can be reproduced by others, here is my problem:
When I open an image or create new one if a click on the rulers and drag the mouse to create a new guide the mouse clicks seems to doesn't work, I cannot move any window but if I choose the toolbox window and press shortcut keys they select the tools, when I change to another workspace and turn back to the gimp's workspace everything works again but I couldn't create a new guide.
I am using XFCE as desktop and the proprietary NVIDIA drivers (just in case it may be a problem). The Gimp error console doesn't show anything.

I don't know when it started, but my Wacom stylus clicks haven't been working right. It seems to do the "click down" correctly, but hasn't always been doing the "click up" when I release the pressure on my stylus. This leads to a bunch of problems when Ubuntu thinks I'm holding down the mouse button, when in reality I'm not holding anything down.I have an older Wacom GD (Intuos 1) USB tablet. I finally figured out how to fix the problem tonight. Here is what I did:1) Determine that "name" of the tablet:lsusb | grep -i wacomBus 002 Device 003: ID 056a:0022 Wacom Co., Ltd Intuos 9x12So in my case, I'm dealing with an Intuos 9x12 tablet. This becomes important at step #3.
2) Edit the right xorg.conf file:
cd /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/
sudo gedit 50-wacom.conf3) At the end of this file, add the following block:
[code]....

I feel these pictures illustrate an issue that should to be addressed: What appears to be happening is that when I try to switch desktops it will select the window I have open and try to move it at the same time. As you can see from the images, as soon as I select a viewpoint, compiz's wobbly windows stay in their warped positions while the application is still completely operational. It's quite funny actually, but is also a problem. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity and Compiz's wobbly windows enabled. I should note that my Unity Panel on the left side of the screen often freezes and will not auto-hide as I have set it to do, which is an unrelated issue, I believe.
I guess I'm wondering if this is some sort of bug that should be posted and where to post it, whether this is a Unity or Compiz issue.

As far as I can tell Unity and Gnome 3.0 look basically the same, are all linux distros going to start to look like that? I finally decided to make the move from windows to linux and I was having a lot of fun customising everything, but now that 11.04 is out i can't even right click on the panels any more :( , can someone refer me to a good linux distro that DOES NOT look like a mac (I hate how macs look), otherwise I might have to move back to windows

Just to preface this, I do have compiz running.
I'm facing a bug where any time I click anywhere inside a window, it performs the function of ALT-clicking the window -- just dragging it around the screen. The only way I can do a standard click on the window is if I hold down the ALT key.
I think this is a compiz issue, since it is fixed by killing compiz. I've had this issue before, but I can't remember how I solved it.

I have recently purchased an ASUS Eee PC (netbook) model 1215T MU10. It has the AMD Athlon II Neo K125 (1.70GHz) processor and a AMD 'nile' platform with an integrated AMD Mobility Radeon HD 4250 graphics card. It has 2 gigs of DDR3 ram. I received the netbook with no OS and installed Ubuntu 11.04 Natty as its only OS. How to make this OS as functional as possible on the computer which it is installed. I have tried to do this myself and noticed I could not access certain plug-ins such as Unity and Compiz ccss. I fiddled with things and eventually ended up having to do a fresh install of the OS and coming to the realization that I have not a clue what I am doing. I have seen video reviews of the unity interface and would absolutely LOVE to have some of the cool things it can do happening on my display.

I messed up my desktop by playing with settings in compiz while i was in unity desktop. The problem happened when i was checking and unchecking features for the cube function. After messing with those i have no menu and no sidebar cant access anything with keyboard shortcuts cant bring up a terminal. The only thing that exists are a few shortcuts to files on desktop. Running 11.04. BTW classic and all others work fine.

I'll come out and say I actually quite like unity, but it still needs a whole load of development. So I'm just wondering if anyone else knows how or why you can't bind Compiz keyboard shortcuts wile running unity. I'm trying to bind a shortcut (any) to Initiate a Window Picker for Window Group. If Unity is moving toward the Mac way of treating groups of windows that belong to the same program as an application it needs to have more options to manage those windows, being able to at least expose those windows would be a start. However I cant seem to put a keyboard binding for this function. I've tried <super>+<shift>+W and on a hunch that it was unity's Super that was messing it up <control>+<alt>+ and <super>+ and <alt>+W and <alt>+<shift>+W.

I've played around with both Unity and Gnome 3 and I love them both. I've decided for now I'm using Unity on my laptop but I was thinking I'll use Gnome 3 on my desktop for particular reasons (I may switch to Unity if I find I'd like it better). My question is, if I install Gnome 3 via the ppa, wouldn't compiz no longer be supported with Gnome 3? Matter of fact I probably wouldn't use anything from compiz even if it could. Hence would it be safe to remove unity and all of compiz or do things in Ubuntu still depend on them? I also wouldn't want them still running in the background or anything. Perhaps now that Ubuntu decided to go the Unity way, that they should support a Gnome-shell build? Like Kubuntu/Xubuntu, even though regular Ubuntu still uses Gnome.

After rebooting, the first message i've been shown was: "Your hardware doesn't support Unity". First strange thing: Unity was working perfectly on all the Beta live versions I've tried before the upgrade.
Well, not a big problem, I didn't really like Unity. Let's stay with Gnome + Compiz, I said.. but Compiz effects don't work anymore. When I try to do System --> Preferences --> Appearance, the "effects" tab doesn't show anymore. The file named "screenshot1.png" will show you this problem, even if it's in Italian: there are only the Theme (tema), Background (sfondo) and Fonts (Tipo di carattere) tabs. Also look to the strange, fuzzy right corner of the themes previews. This didn't happen on 10.10. 3d rendering should be working, since I get
Code:
glxinfo | grep rendering
direct rendering: Yes
But nothing works.
System->Administration->Hardware is empty, but it has always been empty, even on 10.10 (but Compiz effects were working). When I try to set Compiz as windows manager in Compiz Fusion Icon, sometimes the title of the windows disappear, along with the minimize, maximize and close buttons. Do you think there's something I can do to fix all these things?

I just upgraded and hated the left side vertical menu, it's just not my thing.I decided (regrettably) to deselect the Unity plug-in from with the Compiz Settings UI thinking it might get rid of it. It but, but unfortunately it rendered the desktop completely unusable and alll I have now is literally a desktop with no menu's or toolbars of any kind.Although I can login using the 'Classic' option I really think I should fix what I have broken (before reverting to 10.10).Is there any way to re-enable the Unity plugin via command line?I tried entering ccsm via terminal but nothing happens. I also tried entering configcompiz-settings-manager but again, a dead end.

I have a rather odd problem. Ubuntu 11.04 came installed with the nvidia 173 drivers, which I replaced with the current ones. Neither loaded Unity, so I downloaded Nvidia's 270.41.06 drivers from their website. Still no unity.
If I run compiz --replace, however, compiz works fine, and Unity loads, albeit extremely buggy, most likely because all of the gnome components are still running (e.g., if I click anywhere on the top panel, it goes away).

Sometimes I accidentally winkey + middleclick with compiz, which makes the desktop zoom into a small box. So far, every time it happens, I usually just log out, then log back in and it fixed it. Is there a more proper way to return the desktop back to it's normal unmagnified state?

I installed with the image, running alongside Windows 7 on my desktop. I hadn't been in Ubuntu on my laptop for awhile, and hadn't experienced the 11.04 alpha's yet, so I didn't know there would be substantial changes. Obviously, Unity instead of Gnome surprised me a bit, but I have liked it so far.
But here lies the problem. I installed Compiz and ccsm through the software center, then went to enable the desktop cube and rotating cube. I clicked enable/disable on everything that popped up, but I think I must have disabled Unity (whoops). The whole desktop basically disappeared; that is, the dock on the left was gone and the window borders disappeared. I was able to close the windows with Alt+F4, but then couldn't open anything back up. The Super key didn't activate the dock, so it's not like it was hiding. I thought no problem, it'll start back up when I reboot. No dice. Still just the background, nothing to interact with. Only way to do anything is to reboot into with Ctrl+Alt+Dlt.
how do I fix this? Ha sorry for not reading forums beforehand, as I could've avoided this problem. Haven't found any threads on how to fix it, so I decided to start my own.

I was just wondering about something. I have linked the middle click to initiate the cube rotation and it works perfectly except when I have the cursor on firefox. Then it just acts like I middleclicked in firefox itself. Personally I like this behaviour but was wondering why it is JUST firefox that has it. Would be great if I could achieve the same in Blender

Basically what has happened is that I have installed the nvidia drivers for a 9800 GT from the One-click install for the newer video cards. It seems to have succeeded although I am having difficult activating 3D effects. What happens is that whenever I activate Compiz settings, it works for about 2 seconds (wobbly windows is my test) and then quickly goes back to standard. Is this something I have done wrong or is my hardware incompatible? It works in other distributions I have tried so I'm assuming it is a fault on my part.

How do I temporally disable compiz when in unity-3d so that I can play a game at the correct speed (with compiz enabled I get about 20% of the speed I get with compiz disabled) I have tried a script with
metacity --replace &
./game
compiz --replace &
But this makes an unusable desktop.
I know I can use unity-2d but that seems to be worse in terms of usability.. I also know I can use gnome2 but whats the point when that will be missing in the next release . Is there anyway of doing this in unity-3d? Are there any plans (possibly from compiz) to ever do this automatically ?
One thing that worries me is that a new user will try a opengl game and think that Linux is far slower than Windows at games (which if you have a nvidia card with the binary driver is not true)
