Ubuntu :: Is Keeping Unity - Can't Right Click On The Panels Any More
May 1, 2011
As far as I can tell Unity and Gnome 3.0 look basically the same, are all linux distros going to start to look like that? I finally decided to make the move from windows to linux and I was having a lot of fun customising everything, but now that 11.04 is out i can't even right click on the panels any more :( , can someone refer me to a good linux distro that DOES NOT look like a mac (I hate how macs look), otherwise I might have to move back to windows

I have recently upgraded my netbook from 10.04 LTS desktop to 10.10 netbook as I really like the new unity feature.Anyway, I have a couple of prism shortcuts that I use for both my personal and work webmail (both are google apps). When I open them I select them to stay in launcher so they are always accessible. Problem is - as soon as I reboot my machine the prism shortcuts disappear from the Unity launcher. All my other shortcuts like chrome, file browser, open office etc all stay...it's just the prism shortcuts.Has anyone else found the same problem? I have searched the forums and can't find anything.PS Just in case any of you don't know, prism is a tool that lets you create a shortcut to any webpage, with a custom icon and a cut-down version of your browser (i.e. no tool bars cluttering the page) so the shortcut almost works like it's own application.

My panels disappeared after i clicked the log out button and i had to shut down the computer by right-clicking the desktop and clicking shut-down. However when i rebooted, the panels were still gone, my icons on the desktop weren't there and i couldnt right-click on the desktop. i tried updating to 10.10 to solve the problem but that didnt work. running xfce4-panel via "alt-f2" didnt work either.

All I get now is an empty background color. Don't think I did anything to cause this. Creating a new user and logging in I have the complete Unity interface. How do I get the interface back using my initial user Login?

When working in GIMP using a Wacom pen (which I do a lot), not all the lines I draw show up. Maybe every 1 in 5 lines, just don't show up, and it's like the brush outline freezes. This becomes pretty annoying when drawing, which is why I log in standard GNOME without effects when using GIMP.
There is a minor problem that I think may be related, and that is that sometimes when I open a windows in GIMP, such as the Save or Open dialog, I won't be able to click anything in it with my pen. I then need to click the canvas in the background, and after that everything works. It seems as though the brush is stuck on the canvas, which is similar to what happens when drawing. I've tried different compiz settings with vSync and others, but nothing that made this work. This also seems to only be a problem when using a Wacom pen, and not when using the mouse.

Whenever I log in, restart, etc... There are no panels shown, I have to alt+F2, open terminal and run killall gnome-panels in order to have panels shown again. Is there a way to fix this?

I find that I prefer have both panels located at the screen top. That way I don't have to go to the bottom of the screen for one thing, then back to the top for another. I arranged the panel so the regular top one is on top, then the panel that contains the open applications is underneath. The problem is, when I reboot, the panels lose their order. First, the regular top panel initializes, then the bottom ones starts and pushes the first panel down, which becomes what you see in the picture: I would like to find a way to keep them in the opposite order of what you see in the picture, but every time I reboot they end up in that order.

I like 11.04 with Unity however I would like to find a method of managing workspaces with mouse (not keyboard) which gives constant visual feedback and is faster than using the launcher bar, which although not 'slow', takes time to appear and it then takes time to locate the (non movable) desktop switcher item.I happily adopt most of what 11.04 (Unity) offers, however, I really still miss the good visual feedback and the single click action that the lower panel (classic) desktop switcher used. Is there a way of me using some item in unity which is closely similar?

I try to configure mouse click interval since a single click is recognized as double click by doing it from KDE mouse configuration in system settings; but my attempt doesn't work even (I set the click interval to 2 sec, but doesn't change anything). What is the best way to do this in slackware?

I'm newish to the forum, but have been using ubuntu for the past few months.I recently upgraded from eeebuntu (a 9.04 derivative) to 10.04, and found that two finger tapping my touchpad has gone from middle click to right click, (and 3 fingers is now middle instead of right).
From what I've seen, this has been changed since 9.10, but I haven't been able to find a permanent solution yet. Most fixes have been from before and use hal, or other things that don't exist anymore. The one thing I've found does work is using xinput and the command
Code:
xinput set-prop "ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad" "Synaptics Tap Action" 2, 3, 0, 0, 1, 2, 3
But that has to be run every time I start up, and it occasionally reverts while I'm using the computer. I've tried making a script that runs at startup, but neither adding it to the list of startup programs, or autostart folder has worked, but running the script file manually does work. I'm a bit at wits end with this, it's the only issue I've had with 10.04, and I've spent many many hours trying to get it to work (I've also tried gsynaptics and the newer version whose name escapes me right now). Hopefully there's a permanent fix out there.

1. I didn't like the icon theme and changed it to Ubuntu Mono Light. But is there a way to get the Min/Max/Close buttons to how they are in Radiance when maximized, or is that dependant on something else?
2. Is there a way to disable the Unity dock, but not the Unity feature where the Min/Max/Close go into the command bar?

About a week ago I installed some updates. What they were I don't remember. After I did that my mouse started acting up. Now about half the time when I single click it registers as a double click. Also when I click and drag to select text anywhere it'll randomly do another click screwing up that process.
So far I think the problem is when I press the left mouse button it registers the left click and then when I release, it randomly registers another left click.
The mouse itself works fine if I take it to another PC that's using windows.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS has no immediately apparent way that I can see for changing the mouse behavior from the default double-click to single-click. There appears to be some type of kludgy, but unsatisfactory fix for this unwanted behavior in the Accessibility-option, under Mouse-Preferences.

Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.
However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).
This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.

when i click my mouse on something, it sometimes registers as two clicks. it doesn't happen all the time, but frequently enough to be annoying. for example, when i click a videos video to pause it, it often opens into fullscreen (which you normally click twice to do). also, in the url bar of chromium, i can't select the entire url by clicking. i now need to use ctrl+a. that's also because when i try to select the url, the highlight randomly disappears.
if i have multiple windows open, my click on the first "x" of the top-most window also closes the next window. i'm on linux mint 10. it's not really important, but it drives me crazy sometimes when my mouse doesn't work the way i want it to.

If I normally click the Trash icon either in Kmail or in Evolution more than one mail gets deleted in a sequential order! I have to press the click button extremely light to avoid this problem. I have confirmed this problem is not only with the Email clients but even with most other normal applications too. I have changed my mouse twice but the problem persists. Both were USB mice. Below I have provided log information :

After I adjust my slackware and rebooted I saw a strange "rectangle" on my desktop. Please, look at the screenshots below and tell me how I should solve this problem.
I can't move it. Right-click menu on a rectangle coincides with a right-click on desktop. It does not prevent, but very annoying.

In my top right corner I got all my Ubuntu appindicators that come with Ubuntu 11.04. I also have Dropbox, caffeine and screenlets. Problem is that I cant click on dropbox, caffeine, battery indicator, wlan or sound indicator until I first click on messages menu and slide over to appindicator that I need. When screenlets appindicator is not present there is no problem. Its the same when I had Jupiter installed.

I have a Ubuntu 10.04 box that I want to keep on Eastern Standard Time. Under the Time & Date GUI I select the correct time zone, put it in Manual mode, set the time and it is fine until I reboot. Then the clock advances one hour about 20 seconds after boot. I don't remember this happening a month ago before DST started. Does anyone know of a way to keep the beast on EST, not EDT?

Was curious about keeping a running system up to date. Can any harm come from running the following:sudo apt-get updatesudo apt-get upgradeWhat I mean is, is it possible that doing the above could cause a perfectly healthy system to go foobar? If so, what's the best way to prepare a system for a recovery. The Server in question is a Hardy BIND server. In the past, I've seen some ugly things happen to Windows systems after running updates, so I'd like to err on the side of caution.

i have 10.04 installed through wubi on my school hard drive and i notice that after i turn it off, then later put it in one of the many computers, firefox seems to forget i had things to keep me logged in, such as this forum.
now it could be that i use it on different computers(all have the same hardware), but its just odd if you ask me this doesn't get in the way of use but is happening.

I want to download KDE to run on Ubuntu Maverick, as well as keep Gnome.
I tried:
sudo apt-get install kde-minimal
But that package no longer exists. So, what is the KDE-Core (which doesn't exist anymore either) package now? Where do I go to search for current packages? I've looked in Launchpad, but that's more to add repositories and track bugs.

I manipulated the two pannels, making them to automatically hide, then changing one of them to the upper side...
Suddenly it stopped working, I could not complete the change, and on the next restart no panel show up!
I guess I need to reset the configuration of gnome-panel or something, but I have no idea how to do so.

I followed the instructions in this guide to get the plasma workspace without having to migrate to kde:http://digitizor.com/2010/01/01/how-...28Digitizor%29All went well, I was able to complete all the steps in the guide, and I double clicked the "plasma workspace.sh" and it launched the plasma workspace fine. Then I tried using the gnome-desktop.sh the same way, but it just started the gnome desktop and quickly reverted to the plasma workspace. So I looked at the commands in the plasma.sh and the gnome.sh, and the commands on the guide page, and noticed they were the same for both shell scripts. So I changed the gnome desktop.sh from:
#!/bin/bash
killall fusion-icon
killall gnome-panel

I have a /home partition at /dev/sda3 and I am currently in Gparted. I wanted to know if I am supposed to re-identify it somehow when I re-install ubuntu on /dev/sda2.
It seems to me that it would try and create a new home directory on /dev/sda2 unless I tell it otherwise. Is this correct? I just want to make sure I don't do two things...
1. End up with 2 home directories
2. Delete my existing home directory at /dev/sda3 (with my files)
