Ubuntu :: No 3d Effects, No Unity, No Compiz After Upgrading To Natty?

Apr 28, 2011

After rebooting, the first message i've been shown was: "Your hardware doesn't support Unity". First strange thing: Unity was working perfectly on all the Beta live versions I've tried before the upgrade.

Well, not a big problem, I didn't really like Unity. Let's stay with Gnome + Compiz, I said.. but Compiz effects don't work anymore. When I try to do System --> Preferences --> Appearance, the "effects" tab doesn't show anymore. The file named "screenshot1.png" will show you this problem, even if it's in Italian: there are only the Theme (tema), Background (sfondo) and Fonts (Tipo di carattere) tabs. Also look to the strange, fuzzy right corner of the themes previews. This didn't happen on 10.10. 3d rendering should be working, since I get

Code:
glxinfo | grep rendering
direct rendering: Yes
But nothing works.

System->Administration->Hardware is empty, but it has always been empty, even on 10.10 (but Compiz effects were working). When I try to set Compiz as windows manager in Compiz Fusion Icon, sometimes the title of the windows disappear, along with the minimize, maximize and close buttons. Do you think there's something I can do to fix all these things?

Ubuntu :: Should Unity/Compiz Be Removed If Using Gnome 3 In Natty

Apr 22, 2011

I've played around with both Unity and Gnome 3 and I love them both. I've decided for now I'm using Unity on my laptop but I was thinking I'll use Gnome 3 on my desktop for particular reasons (I may switch to Unity if I find I'd like it better). My question is, if I install Gnome 3 via the ppa, wouldn't compiz no longer be supported with Gnome 3? Matter of fact I probably wouldn't use anything from compiz even if it could. Hence would it be safe to remove unity and all of compiz or do things in Ubuntu still depend on them? I also wouldn't want them still running in the background or anything. Perhaps now that Ubuntu decided to go the Unity way, that they should support a Gnome-shell build? Like Kubuntu/Xubuntu, even though regular Ubuntu still uses Gnome.

Ubuntu :: Unable Visual Effects And/or Unity?

Apr 29, 2011

I have just installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop. Default installation, nothing special or fancy. It has a QuadroNVS 110M video chip, iirc. On Ubuntu 9, the visual effects were there to be enabled. When I enabled them it would ask if the proprietary drivers may be enabled. If I choose yes, they did and there were the visual effects that we all adore so much.

Now I'm trying Ubuntu 11.04, and the visual effects are nowhere to be found. The funny thing is, right after installation, the very first time the desktop was supposed to be loaded, I got a message telling my that my hardware is not capable of Unity. So alright, let's just only have the visual effects then. But how/where? It seems as if all references to effects and to unity have been wiped clean, because I can't find it *anywhere*.

Also, in the "additional drivers" I have activated the "[recommended]" nvidia accelerated driver, but after that (and rebooting) it is "activated but not currently in use". I have no idea what that means.

Note that I'm a Windows user really. I have next to no knowledge about linux. So great if I have to do some clicks or some packages to be installed, not so great to muddle in config files. I have also already scouted google, and I did find the obvious links, and no solution.

Ubuntu :: Unity 2D And No Effects At Bootup - Firefox 4.0.1 Won't Run

May 2, 2011

I have had 11.04 running very well (without Unity) on my older Presario 2170us laptop. I've been curious about Unity, which my laptop can't run....so last night, I opened Synaptic, entered Unity as a search and saw 'Unity 2D'. The description indicated it would run without accelerated graphics cards, so I installed it.... and it killed Firefox 4.0.1 Now, even if I select Ubuntu No Effects at bootup, Firefox won't run.... instead, I get an error dialog, stating that a report will be send about the error and then I can click on either Cancel or Restart Firefox (which does nothing, by the way). I haven't tried uninstalling 'Unity 2D' because I wanted to post here first and see if there's a work-around.

Ubuntu :: Can't Use Metacity And Compiz Effects Together

Feb 27, 2010

I'm on a Sabayon Linux install, and the Sabayon forums and stuff have NO idea what I'm talking about and keep giving me "facepalms"

So in Ubuntu I could enable desktop effects and simply use my metacity themes.

In Sabayon, when I enable Compiz, it changes my window theme manager to Emerald. I want to use metacity, not Emerald. They kept telling me it wasn't possible when I used Compiz effects and Metacity together all the time.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - No Compiz Effects Seems To Be Working

Dec 2, 2010

I've been running an emerald theme in compiz for few months now and everything was running fine when a couple days ago VLC started acting weird and playing little static clicks every few seconds. Then the next time I booted up after an initial second of flashing my full desktop the screen blanked off a section on the left and bottom of my screen. When I logged in docky told me it was having trouble with the compositing, but when I scrolled over the spot where my docks are they were there. My arrow can be seen in the black areas as can the start panel when I scroll over it, but aside from that it is black and when I open I window the blackness covers it in that part. None of my compiz effects seem to be working.

I am running a pretty basic motherboard and I know basically nothing about this kind of thing but I looked up the built in integrated video card online : ATI Radeon - HD3000 Graphics, On Board Graphic Max. Memory Share Up to 512 MB. I have an ATI driver installed but when I look at my drivers it says it is installed but not currently in use. When I look at my visual effects page it is on none, so I tried changing it to normal and it says the effects can't be enabled. I am running a dual boot with windows and when I go into windows there doesn't seem to be any problems. I am running a Biostar A760G M2+, an AMD AthlonII x4 and running Ubuntu 10.04.

Ubuntu :: Compiz Is Effects Not Working

Still new to Ubuntu, and I've installed it on my laptop tonight (Alienware M11x, Ubuntu 11.04). I've got it pretty much how I want it, but I'm stuck with a CCSM/Compiz question.I have Compiz installed, along with the extra plugins (burn, etc). However, when I try to enable any effects, I get nothing as a result.I've rebooted, enabled both Gnome and KDE compatiblities, etc- nothing will work.I'm still learning the ins-and-outs of the terminal/command line system.

Ubuntu :: After Upgrade - Unable To Run Effects Or Unity (fglrx - ATI)

May 2, 2011

When I first did the upgrade to Natty, no desktop at all would start. I could only get a text terminal login prompt. Log showed a segfault in fglrx module: "firegl_SetSuspendResumeState" I found instructions to remove the fglrx module and install the default ATI driver. Now I get a graphical login screen. But I must only login with "Ubuntu Classic (No effects)" in order to get a desktop. If I select Unity or Ubuntu Classic, I never get taskbars or menus and can't run any apps. So Natty Narwahl is a big step backwards for me. What is the relevant information to provide? The display driver is listed as RV710 [Radeon HD 4550] from ATI Technologies Inc.

Ubuntu :: Natty - What Is New About Unity New Look Dash

Mar 4, 2011

I have read about it, looked at screen shots of it but I don't think Unity runs on a virtual machine yet so I have not laid hands on it. Still it looks to me like a remake of the old Windows 3.x "program groups" concept (at least it was called something like that back before the fall of the Roman empire). Looks like a waste of space to me to have all the program and file icons in a box instead of tucked out of the way along a panel.

Ubuntu :: No Desktop Effects And Non-functioning Compiz

So I was messing around on my laptop this morning and I noticed that my desktop effects were turned off. So i decided to turn them on but as soon as i pressed the "normal" option a pop up opens up and says "searching for drivers" then the screen flickers and finally it tells me "desktop effects cannot be enabled". Also my compizconfig wasn't functioning. for exmaple: I turn on wobble windows and nothing happens. No wobble windows.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Enable Compiz Effects After Using A Projector

Apr 7, 2010

A friend whom I turned on to Ubuntu with 9.10 recently connected a projector to watch a movie off her laptop. When it was connected, the laptop screen changed and it was clear that desktop effects through compiz were disabled. Thing is, since disconnecting the projector, I cannot get the effects back.If I go into Preferences - Appearance and click to enable Normal or Extra Visual Effects, the same thing happens. I.e. I get a popup saying Searching for hardware driver...and after about 20 seconds, the screen flashes a bit, and says

Desktop effects could not be enabled. Not sure why it's searching for a hardware driver. The computer doesn't require any 3rd party hardware drivers to be enabled - it doesn't have an nVidia card or anything like that.If it makes a difference, she yanked the VGA cord out without setting the display mode back to just her laptop with the FN and F key combo.I've tried:

-Reinstalling compiz

-Tinkering with options under Preferences - Display

-Ensuring that nothing is available under Preferences - Hardware Drivers

Ubuntu :: Get Compiz / Desktop Effects Working?

I hope this is the correct section. I have recently updated to 10.04 and now Compiz/desktop effects wont work. When I try to turn visual effects on I get a message saying they could not be enabled. I'm a bit new to all this so not sure if I'm doing something wrong.I've looked at many threads regarding this problem and nothing they say has worked. iv tried using Hardware Drivers (in systems administration) but this says "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system".

Also I don't know whether this effects anything but when I open NVIDIA X Server Settings (in systems administration) i get a message saying "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server."Does anyone know how I can get Compiz/desktop effects working?.

Ubuntu :: Able To NOT Run Compiz Under Natty?

I read that Natty will use Unity as the preferred desktop environment, together with Compiz. I found that on my system Compiz - while very neat - will cause instability so I'd rather not use it. How would the desktop stack look for a user not wanting to run Compiz under Natty? Can I use Mutter with Unity? Or maybe I should replace Unity with Gnome? Will my Ubuntu like this (replacing Unity with Gnome)? Will Ubuntu make it easy for users to dump Compiz if they want to do so?

Ubuntu :: Cannot Enable Effects After Upgrading To 10.04 / Possible Solution For It?

May 13, 2010

I first had Ubuntu 9.04 and had to go through a wild goose chase to get effects like wobby windows, cube and all that jazz. When I upgraded to 9.10 I still didn't have any problems with my desktop effects. Once I upgraded to 10.04, I couldn't use any of my effects.

I went into CompizConfig to check what was wrong, but all of my effects were still "checked". I checked the Hardware Drivers and got the drivers I needed (my GPX card is a GeForce 5200) but that still didn't fix the problem. I've tried searching for some kind of instructions in Google, but all of the instructions I've found don't really help. Does anyone know where I can go that addresses this problem and could have a possible solution?

Ubuntu :: Unity And Compiz Don't Seem To Mix Well?

May 1, 2011

I feel these pictures illustrate an issue that should to be addressed: What appears to be happening is that when I try to switch desktops it will select the window I have open and try to move it at the same time. As you can see from the images, as soon as I select a viewpoint, compiz's wobbly windows stay in their warped positions while the application is still completely operational. It's quite funny actually, but is also a problem. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity and Compiz's wobbly windows enabled. I should note that my Unity Panel on the left side of the screen often freezes and will not auto-hide as I have set it to do, which is an unrelated issue, I believe.

I guess I'm wondering if this is some sort of bug that should be posted and where to post it, whether this is a Unity or Compiz issue.
