Ubuntu :: Defining Keys Under Compiz With Unity?

Aug 4, 2011

I'll come out and say I actually quite like unity, but it still needs a whole load of development. So I'm just wondering if anyone else knows how or why you can't bind Compiz keyboard shortcuts wile running unity. I'm trying to bind a shortcut (any) to Initiate a Window Picker for Window Group. If Unity is moving toward the Mac way of treating groups of windows that belong to the same program as an application it needs to have more options to manage those windows, being able to at least expose those windows would be a start. However I cant seem to put a keyboard binding for this function. I've tried <super>+<shift>+W and on a hunch that it was unity's Super that was messing it up <control>+<alt>+ and <super>+ and <alt>+W and <alt>+<shift>+W.

Ubuntu Installation :: Navigating Applications Using Navigation Keys In Unity?

Apr 29, 2011

Loading up gedit (as an example) I am unable to navigate reliably using keyboard navigation controls with the new Unity interface. There are times when left/right will work within a document but up/down will not. After a reboot left/top/right will work but down will not unless you physically click on the position you would like the cursor. I'm guessing unity unity is stealing these keys but not releasing them back to the applications?

Ubuntu :: Unity And Compiz Don't Seem To Mix Well?

May 1, 2011

I feel these pictures illustrate an issue that should to be addressed: What appears to be happening is that when I try to switch desktops it will select the window I have open and try to move it at the same time. As you can see from the images, as soon as I select a viewpoint, compiz's wobbly windows stay in their warped positions while the application is still completely operational. It's quite funny actually, but is also a problem. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity and Compiz's wobbly windows enabled. I should note that my Unity Panel on the left side of the screen often freezes and will not auto-hide as I have set it to do, which is an unrelated issue, I believe.

I guess I'm wondering if this is some sort of bug that should be posted and where to post it, whether this is a Unity or Compiz issue.

Ubuntu :: Unity Alternatives - Can't Use Alt-Tab To Switch To Apps As VirtualBox Captures The Keys For Windows

May 3, 2011

When working in an XP VirtualBox I can't use Alt-Tab to switch to my Linux Apps as VirtualBox captures the keys for Windows. So I tended to make a lot of use on the Application list on the old System Tray/Taskbar. I could click on the application's entry in the taskbar and that application would come up. When I needed to return to the Windows App, I clicked again and the application would then minimise so I can see the Windows app. Also I have been using the SUPER button in conjunction with 'E' to raise the Home Directory (just to keep it consistent with Windows).

Ubuntu :: No Access To Certain Plugins As Unity And Compiz

Jun 6, 2011

I have recently purchased an ASUS Eee PC (netbook) model 1215T MU10. It has the AMD Athlon II Neo K125 (1.70GHz) processor and a AMD 'nile' platform with an integrated AMD Mobility Radeon HD 4250 graphics card. It has 2 gigs of DDR3 ram. I received the netbook with no OS and installed Ubuntu 11.04 Natty as its only OS. How to make this OS as functional as possible on the computer which it is installed. I have tried to do this myself and noticed I could not access certain plug-ins such as Unity and Compiz ccss. I fiddled with things and eventually ended up having to do a fresh install of the OS and coming to the realization that I have not a clue what I am doing. I have seen video reviews of the unity interface and would absolutely LOVE to have some of the cool things it can do happening on my display.

Ubuntu :: Should Unity/Compiz Be Removed If Using Gnome 3 In Natty

Apr 22, 2011

I've played around with both Unity and Gnome 3 and I love them both. I've decided for now I'm using Unity on my laptop but I was thinking I'll use Gnome 3 on my desktop for particular reasons (I may switch to Unity if I find I'd like it better). My question is, if I install Gnome 3 via the ppa, wouldn't compiz no longer be supported with Gnome 3? Matter of fact I probably wouldn't use anything from compiz even if it could. Hence would it be safe to remove unity and all of compiz or do things in Ubuntu still depend on them? I also wouldn't want them still running in the background or anything. Perhaps now that Ubuntu decided to go the Unity way, that they should support a Gnome-shell build? Like Kubuntu/Xubuntu, even though regular Ubuntu still uses Gnome.

Ubuntu :: No 3d Effects, No Unity, No Compiz After Upgrading To Natty?

Apr 28, 2011

After rebooting, the first message i've been shown was: "Your hardware doesn't support Unity". First strange thing: Unity was working perfectly on all the Beta live versions I've tried before the upgrade.

Well, not a big problem, I didn't really like Unity. Let's stay with Gnome + Compiz, I said.. but Compiz effects don't work anymore. When I try to do System --> Preferences --> Appearance, the "effects" tab doesn't show anymore. The file named "screenshot1.png" will show you this problem, even if it's in Italian: there are only the Theme (tema), Background (sfondo) and Fonts (Tipo di carattere) tabs. Also look to the strange, fuzzy right corner of the themes previews. This didn't happen on 10.10. 3d rendering should be working, since I get

Code:
glxinfo | grep rendering
direct rendering: Yes
But nothing works.

System->Administration->Hardware is empty, but it has always been empty, even on 10.10 (but Compiz effects were working). When I try to set Compiz as windows manager in Compiz Fusion Icon, sometimes the title of the windows disappear, along with the minimize, maximize and close buttons. Do you think there's something I can do to fix all these things?

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Re-enable Unity Plug-in In Compiz

Apr 29, 2011

I just upgraded and hated the left side vertical menu, it's just not my thing.I decided (regrettably) to deselect the Unity plug-in from with the Compiz Settings UI thinking it might get rid of it. It but, but unfortunately it rendered the desktop completely unusable and alll I have now is literally a desktop with no menu's or toolbars of any kind.Although I can login using the 'Classic' option I really think I should fix what I have broken (before reverting to 10.10).Is there any way to re-enable the Unity plugin via command line?I tried entering ccsm via terminal but nothing happens. I also tried entering configcompiz-settings-manager but again, a dead end.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unity Only Starts With Compiz - Replace

May 14, 2011

I have a rather odd problem. Ubuntu 11.04 came installed with the nvidia 173 drivers, which I replaced with the current ones. Neither loaded Unity, so I downloaded Nvidia's 270.41.06 drivers from their website. Still no unity.

If I run compiz --replace, however, compiz works fine, and Unity loads, albeit extremely buggy, most likely because all of the gnome components are still running (e.g., if I click anywhere on the top panel, it goes away).

Ubuntu :: Compiz And 11.04 - Enabling Desktop Cube Screwed Up Unity?

Apr 28, 2011

I installed with the image, running alongside Windows 7 on my desktop. I hadn't been in Ubuntu on my laptop for awhile, and hadn't experienced the 11.04 alpha's yet, so I didn't know there would be substantial changes. Obviously, Unity instead of Gnome surprised me a bit, but I have liked it so far.

But here lies the problem. I installed Compiz and ccsm through the software center, then went to enable the desktop cube and rotating cube. I clicked enable/disable on everything that popped up, but I think I must have disabled Unity (whoops). The whole desktop basically disappeared; that is, the dock on the left was gone and the window borders disappeared. I was able to close the windows with Alt+F4, but then couldn't open anything back up. The Super key didn't activate the dock, so it's not like it was hiding. I thought no problem, it'll start back up when I reboot. No dice. Still just the background, nothing to interact with. Only way to do anything is to reboot into with Ctrl+Alt+Dlt.

how do I fix this? Ha sorry for not reading forums beforehand, as I could've avoided this problem. Haven't found any threads on how to fix it, so I decided to start my own.

Ubuntu :: Able To Click Anything In GIMP With Pen - Wacom And Unity / Compiz Incompatibility

Jul 3, 2011

When working in GIMP using a Wacom pen (which I do a lot), not all the lines I draw show up. Maybe every 1 in 5 lines, just don't show up, and it's like the brush outline freezes. This becomes pretty annoying when drawing, which is why I log in standard GNOME without effects when using GIMP.

There is a minor problem that I think may be related, and that is that sometimes when I open a windows in GIMP, such as the Save or Open dialog, I won't be able to click anything in it with my pen. I then need to click the canvas in the background, and after that everything works. It seems as though the brush is stuck on the canvas, which is similar to what happens when drawing. I've tried different compiz settings with vSync and others, but nothing that made this work. This also seems to only be a problem when using a Wacom pen, and not when using the mouse.

Ubuntu :: Disable Compiz When Launching Game In Unity-3d (otherwise GL Games Are Unplayable)?

Apr 28, 2011

How do I temporally disable compiz when in unity-3d so that I can play a game at the correct speed (with compiz enabled I get about 20% of the speed I get with compiz disabled) I have tried a script with

metacity --replace &
./game
compiz --replace &
But this makes an unusable desktop.

I know I can use unity-2d but that seems to be worse in terms of usability.. I also know I can use gnome2 but whats the point when that will be missing in the next release . Is there anyway of doing this in unity-3d? Are there any plans (possibly from compiz) to ever do this automatically ?

One thing that worries me is that a new user will try a opengl game and think that Linux is far slower than Windows at games (which if you have a nvidia card with the binary driver is not true)

I don't know if this is a configuration issue or a hardware issue, but I have a Kinesis Advantage USB keyboard and for some reason the F3-F5 keys aren't responding as they used to. Any idea how I could remap them to the original meaning?

I tried the following in my .bashrc file:

alias work ='qsub -I -X'

But, of course this failed, as I don't have a command work already defined. How do I go about doing this? Also, I can't assign 'qsub' an alias, since it's used with different options quite extensively.
