View 9 RepliesI currently have a problem where when xubuntu is restarted using the power button, it will prompt the user with grub asking which selection to boot (xubuntu recovery or xubuntu) this feature itself is fine, but for some reason there is no timer, which means that unless you hit enter, it will always be stuck on the GRUB selection screen. I am wondering if there is any way to change this, is there anyway to enter a timer into the system so no matter what, after x seconds it will boot xubuntu?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed xubuntu xfce edition on my netbook cause I got sick of windows7 starter. It's up and running now and I got it to connect to the wireless internet, but I can't upgrade it. When I tried to do it through the upgrade manager, it just says "waiting" after I put in my password and hit the check mark for "apply upgrades". Idk I waited for like 2 & half hours. I first assumed it was downloading the stuff, but it shouldn't have taken that long? Then I logged out and logged back in and tried to do it through the terminal, but that didn't work either.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Xubuntu (9.10) in my computer, but... I have been having intermitent hard disk problems, and so I decided to google a little and after reading this:

I did use Synaptic to search for smartmontools and then install it.
Synaptic complained that it couldn't autenticate the packet, but I figured this was happening because... this is not an application supported by Canonical? I clicked and installed the packet (well, in fact, I *think* it has installed two applications, not just one).
Then later, I saw one of those arrows at the top right of the screen, and clicked it to install updates. Synaptic told me to update SUDO. Hmm... serious. And then even more: it told me that it couldn't autenticate it I stopped the installation and registered at these forums.
And more: before posting, I tried to reproduce the "error" (and again, stop before installing the "suspicious" SUDO update) but Synaptic now autenticated it troubleless and installed it.
Well, now I have a LOT of questions:
1. Where do I place this post?. Security?. Hardware problems?. Update and installation? (Linux noobiness?)
2. my hard disk?. I've read somewhere that an application called "fsck"
3. What may have happened with Synaptic?. Why wouldn't it autenticate a SUDO update?
4. Have I done something wrong?. Something unrepairable?
5. Can I trust the SUDO version that now I have installed in my system?
6. How could I check what has Synaptic exactly installed?. Is there any log file anywhere in my system?
The title bars / window decorations are missing since the last update done about two days ago. I have AMD64 / nvidia 6600 / 2GB / compiz. Latest driver is installed for nvidia and it was working without any problems since 9.04. Now I find that desktop visual effects are selected as 'None' and I am unable to make it 'extra'. Earlier it was set as custom and I had no problems. I have searched the forums and tried many solutions without any success. Now I am running metacity (metacity --replace)with no visual effects, 'compiz --replace' brings back the problem . Is there any way of enabling visual effects // compiz now? Or do I have to re-instal the whole thing
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu Lucid on a machine (32 bit version). When I run apt-get update it gets stuck at 99%. I have also other variants running in Virtual box. (ubu student, mint-debian, Ubuntu Maveric). All the OS have this problem. Searched through the Debian bugtracker, they've had this problem at least since 2008. It seems that it worked until the update the other day I think it was last weekend at least on lucid If there is a connection problem at the server end shouldn't it at least time out or something giving you a message that it couldn't access the server, I mean it does but only if I hit cancel. Or control+c in the command line. How can one update if the update manager isn't working correctly?

this is a minor but annoying problem and I hope maybe just a simple fix. I have a weather monitor in my top panel. Sometimes it gets stuck and can't update. How do I restart these little panel applets or whatever they are called? I don't want to restart or even relogon for such a trivial problem, but it is annoying. Not sure about the relogon, but I know a reboot fixes it. (running AMD64 bit lucid).

All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why?What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

Dell Inspiron E1405 - 160 GB drive with 2 partitions - I think only 1 partition was used for windows and ubuntu Used wubi to install 10.04 - both XPP and 10.04 worked fine after repairing the XP install My boyfriend used Referencer (.reflib) in Ubuntu 10.04 to organize and tag about 900 documents. He spent around 9 hours on the project and its VERY IMPORTANT. I am a dumb ***, forgot the project was on the computer and updated to 10.10 via update manager without it backing up. Now I cant boot to XPP or Ubuntu - "error: no such device:", "grub rescue" My main concern is getting the data back. I would rather uninstall WUBI and install Ubuntu on the 2nd partition (wish I would have done this in the first place but 10.04 was my first Ubuntu install and I didn't know any better). I have to get this data back! I have tried the following and cant locate the referencer (.reflib) file or the .docs and .jpgs booted to USB using my 10.10 netbook remix USB install USB stick - I can see the windows files pulled the HD out and connected it to my Ubuntu netbook, an XPH and W7 computers -cant locate data

I'm not sure what caused it, but it happened right after running 'yum update'. It may be because it installed a new kernel, and there are now two kernels listed in my grub.conf and at boot; 2.6.31 and 2.6.32. System boots through a list of things it's starting up and stalls out at ATL or ADL or ADM maybe. It hangs there for a minute or so then flickers. This happens every time at boot. It's a bit difficult to post more information since I can't get past that part of the boot process, and I can't seem to be able to skip it either. It may be worth mentioning that this is a mini-itx motherboard. Intel Atom 330 1.6, 2GB DDR2, onboard GeForce 9400m. It's a zotac ionitx-a-u. I've installed a fresh copy of Fedora 12 lxde.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the 6.06 version of xubuntu because i have a laptop that doesnt support high graphics mode, and i wasnt able to figure out how to get it to run in low graphics mode. i figured that i would get a version from a while back, and then update it up to the current version. now, to the problem. I was able to upgrade 6.10, but now it says Ubuntu version 8.04 available, so i tried to update it. it gets most of the way through the part where it says calculating or something like that, and then it says: "Can't install 'xubuntu-desktop' It was impossible to install a required package. Please report this as a bug." with an option that says close at the bottom. when i click close another window pops up that says: Could not calculate the upgrade A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade. This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport. Then the window just closes... anything that i could do to get rid of this problem? EDIT: Is there any way to update directly from an .iso file on the desktop?

Now my problem is that I've tried to run a .exe file with WINE. But Xubuntu gives the error that I can't run the file because it is not marked as a executable. Now I saw somewhere in the Ubuntu Documentation that you have to change the permissions with Properties>Permissions. But in Xubuntu I can' t make the file executable, as in Ubuntu.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an MSI netbook with a non-functioning version of Ubuntu (the GUI is GNOME, and currently not working) and I'm trying to replace that with xubuntu. For whatever reason, I cannot get the system to mount the USB key, which currently has nothing on it except for the xubuntu .iso file. My computer is encrypted with sda5_crypt, which comes up and demands a password just after the MSI boot screen. I assume I need to press some kind of key before the sda5_crypt screen, but I'm not sure which button that is. There is an option of pressing F11 for "boot menu", and from there I can select "flash card", but it doesn't do me any good to do that.

I'll try to give out as much details as possible but this issue is very troubling.
I used to work with maverick until the final natty xubuntu went online the other day.
So I'm now working with Xubuntu 11.04 amd64 Since i started working with it im experiencing on my PC a serious overheat causing the computer to shut itself down and to my LED screen on the mother board to report more then 100C degrees of the cpu... this never happened before, and after some testing i found out that i only happens in full screen opengl game (Enemy territory- shuts itself after 6 minutes) and full screen flash movie playing (such as mega video- shuts itselfs after 10-15 minutes). I don't use stock cooling im using a arctic freezer 64 pro. and i clean my computer and put new thermal grease every couple of months (i also did it again after the problem started).
now for the specs: I'll just add that the only other thing changed is the fglrx drivers which i now use the 11.4 catalyst.
