Ubuntu :: Xorg Crashes Only After Boot In 9.04

Aug 26, 2010

I have a small issue of Xorg. Every time I boot the ubuntu 9.04, the X will crash immediately after it started. Then, it will start again and shows the login interface. It went well after the second login. I don't know what caused this since there is no error message in /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/gdm/*.

Ubuntu :: Boot Up Crashes After Latest Xorg Update On Karmic

Jan 21, 2010

My system is a Gigabyte GA-P35-DQ6 with Radeon 5770. The system was rock solid and everything working fine until the latest update I applied 30 minutes ago. The system is stuck on the little circle icon before the login screen.

I'm not able to ssh or telnet to the machine to check the log files. I edited my grub.conf a while back and I don't seem to be able to call up the recovery kernel. I can read up on the grub options.

Ubuntu :: Xorg Crashes At Random?

May 5, 2010

Ive been having some problems with a Compaq computer with Lubuntu installed. The problem is that Xorg crashes at random displaying a white distortion on the screen and it usually doesn't let me go to a terminal and i have to force a shutdown.
the same happened when I tried to install Ubuntu but worse. Another side effect is that lubuntu at boot up displays its logo in 16-bit colors and then goes to normal colors.

how can i diagnose the random crashes?

Ubuntu :: Wacom Crashes Xorg On KVM Switch?

When I switch my KVM over to my Ubuntu box, the Wacom tablet causes X to crash about 1 out of every 4 times. I will usually see what I'm supposed to for a split second, get a blank screen and/or command line for a second, then I'm back at the login screen.

Xorg.4.log: (EE) Wacom Graphire4 4x5: Error reading wacom device : No such device

If the tablet is plugged directly into the KVM, it crashes every time. Instead, I have the tablet plugged into my Mac laptop, which is itself plugged into the KVM (TrendNet USB w/audio).

Ubuntu :: Xorg Crashes With Fatal Error / Fix It?

Xorg seems to crash randomly and with no real reason. Once it does, I can't restart it. If I try to restart it with GDM, nothing will happen. However once it crashes, Ubuntu's low graphics mode window pops up. Telling it to reconfigure the xorg config seems to do nothing for my problem. I will still crash after words.

Right now I'm running in an earlier kernel, hoping this will keep it from crasgubg

Here is my xorg log. code...

Debian Multimedia :: Xorg Crashes With Intel 82845G

Mar 3, 2010

I've freshly installed Debian Lenny 5.03 with xfce from cd, but I'm having intermittent problems with X. Mostly X will startup fine, but occasionally it crashes. If I'm lucky, it will just shutdown and just return me to the text-mode login. But if I'm unlucky, it freezes completely, such that even the alt-SysRq key combos won't work.

Software :: Xorg (1.10.1) Crashes With NVIDIA Drivers (275.09.07) On Debian (grml)

Jun 24, 2011

I'm using the most recent version of Xorg that is available in the Debian repository (unstable) and it flashes the NVIDIA logo and crashes the whole computer immediately after. Ctrl+Alt+F[0-9] do nothing when this happens.

I've tried reverting to an older NVIDIA driver, but they either cause the same issues (27x.y.z) or require version ignoring for ABI (26x.y.z) which leads to a segfault.

I would be fine running vesa for now, but it doesn't support 1366x768 resolution so I either have to deal with a bad resolution or have part of the screen cut off.

Slackware :: Xorg Server Crashes Because It Looses Old Configuration File?

Oct 29, 2010

After I updated several software including Xorg server using "slackpkg update", I Ignorantly deleted configuration files without backing them up making Xorg server crashes.I try to build Xorg.conf using xorgsetup command but it crashes and spews:

Code:
Fatal server error:

I have a Radeon 4850 Graphic Card with ATI Catalyst as its driver, so I try to reinstall the driver hoping that it will fix the problem, which is a bad logic I admit it, and It fails to uninstall (for some reason the uninstall script is gone) and reinstall (problem with file extraction).

Fedora :: Korganizer To-Do Opening Crashes Xorg With ATI / AMD Catalyst Driver - Fatal Server Error

Dec 8, 2010

I had an earlier thread with wrong title and wasn't sure of the problem at the time. Now I have some details after checking all the threads about catalyst so posting a new thread. The problem: In korganizer (or To-Do list in kontact), whenever double-clicking or right-click->Edit.. a To-Do item in the summary list window, it crashes Xorg.

[Code]...

Fatal server error: Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting I think it has something to do with the amd/ati catalyst driver and korganizer. My video card is XFX Radeon HD5670. I have Fedora 14 x86_64 latest update with xorg 1.9.1-3. I tried catalyst 10.9, 10.10, 10.11, and kernel 2.6.35.6-45.fc14.x86_64, 2.6.35.6-48.fc14.x86_64, 2.6.35.9-64.fc14.x86_64. Same problem.

If I use vesa driver, or from another PC with proprietary nvidia driver, no problem. Open source radeon driver works ok but sometimes the display turns off and I can't get back the display. And I need 3D. I scoured through the forum and followed the instructions exactly:

Ubuntu :: System Does Not Boot After Removing Xorg

Dec 15, 2010

Running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Sony Vaio VGN-NR430E laptop. My system had been running noticeably slow lately, so I decided to poke around the system monitor and see what was eating my resources. Xorg peaked at around 50% cpu, so I decided (in a rash decision) to remove it. Went to Syanptic Package Manager -> completely remove all "Xorg server" packages ( was alerted that Xorg itself would have to be reinstalled for this to happen, "OK" ). After Syanptic finished, I looked back to the System Monitor and saw Xorg still there, still eating CPU. Out of frustration, I selected "End Process".The grub loader still works so I can switch between kernel versions and "recovery" mode, but a normal boot simply takes me to a black screen. I tried sudo apt-get update from Recovery mode, only to get an error when connecting to the repositories.

Ubuntu :: Sometimes Crashes During Boot?

Dec 28, 2010

I have a weird problem. Sometimes Ubuntu freezes when I'm booting up, sometimes not. I would say 2 out of 3 times it crashes, all other times it goes fine. I alway get past the GRUB bootscreen, then it starts loading. Towards the end or so, all of a sudden all disk activity stops and the screen hangs. Ctrl+C, Ctrl+Z, Escape, whatever buttons I press, it doesn't do anything.

I removed the "quiet" and "splash" boot options in GRUB so I could see in detail what is loading, but this doesn't make any more sense then before. The lines of text are always a bit different every time it happens so I can't really pinpoint when it goes wrong. Anyway, I don't see anything wrong with the output on my screen, I guess the real problem is not displayed.

I also tried booting into recovery mode. Also here this is strange. Sometimes I make it to the recovery screen with the options (resume, clean, netroot, ...), sometimes it crashes before that. When I get the recovery screen I choose "resume", this usually works and then I use "startx" to go into graphical mode. However, at other times, when I choose "resume" it freezes even before I get a login prompt.

So please guys, tell me, what is the problem here? How do I find out where I should start looking. Ubuntu sometimes freezes and when it does it doesn't alway happen at the same place as before. I know only 1 thing for certain, once I'm fully booted I don't have any problems whatsoever, everything seems to work flawlessly.

I am running a dual boot system with Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows7/XP. I am running kernel 2.6.35-24 (also tried 2.6.35-23, but no difference). I have an i5 CPU, so 64 bits. If you need any more information, just ask.

Ubuntu :: Crashes Everytime Boot?

Apr 13, 2010

first of all I would like to say that Im not a very advanced Ubuntu (8.04 Hardy Heron) user. I have used it a couple of months, and got a long with it fine.. Yet, suddenly everytime I boot the Laptop the screen is Black with white lines, (no the monitor is not broken). When it asks me to chose a O.S. I have tried different ones. I can get into recovery mode without problems. Yet, when I start any other version (Ive got different ones, .16,.17 (I dont know why)) it freezes at the login screen. I can move the mouse but the caps lock doesnt even work. Sometimes (1 in 20 times) I do get to login, but after about 2-5 minutes the computer freezes.. (again i can move the mouse but nothing else works). Thats why I wont be able to use Gparted or any other programs to completely delete Ubuntu! I dont have another pc, so I wont be able to download that either.

What I have tried is reinstalling Ubuntu, yet it just kept the other Ubuntu versions no the computer. What I would like to know from you guys, how can I delete everything that is on my harddrive, so I can use the Ubuntu CD to reinstall? And yet another question, what problems could there be with my computer? I don't have windows, could it still be a virus? What parts of the laptop could cause this problem?I know that I have been quite repetitive throughout this post, I just want to cover everything.

This usually happens twice, but sometimes three times. The processor light is on solid when it does this.I've run TOP from the terminal, and it says it's XORG that's running.

This only happens when Firefox is running, and when I first turn on the laptop after it being turned off for a while. Every morning, when I first run Firefox, XORG takes control of the laptop. Not a big deal, but frustrating and worrisome.

OpenSUSE Install :: Xorg Update - Boot Into Run Level 3 Stops

Jun 8, 2011

There was an xorg update that I did today (June 8) and when try to boot into runlevel 3, it stops when it gets to starting up sntp. I also saw that it said DHCP client not running. When I try again (push the power button) and allow it to do what it wants, everything seems to start up just fine. I'm asking about this because I need to re-install my NVIDIA graphics card driver. For the boot options, I've tried clearing the text (I don't remember what they are at the moment) and typing:

Code:
nomodeset 3
and when that failed, I've tried it as
Code:
nomodeset3
but still get stuck at the same spot. I've also tried it without clearing the text but still it gets stuck.

How can I get to runlevel 3 in order to re-install my graphics card driver? I cannot run my 3D software without it. Can I switch to runlevel 3 from the usual (normal GUI) screen? I can't remember the command. I'm running SuSE 11.4.

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB2 Bootloader Crashes With Win7 And 10.04 Dual Boot?

May 7, 2010

I have a Dell Studio 14 laptop with Windows 7 64bit preinstalled. The processor is core i5 and the machine has 4GB RAM. I freed 25GB of memory from my Hard disk and tried to install Ubuntu 10.04 (AMD). Everything went fine. I restarted and Logged into Ubuntu. It worked like a charm. Then I restarted to Windows7. This also worked well as expected.

But, when I rebooted again, I got a black screen saying that No modules found. Press any key to restart
When I press a key, it says No operating system found, probably after checking through a network (it printed lines starting with PXE).

I tried exactly in the same way with Ubuntu 8.04 in my machine, and this worked without any problem. The Bootloader was not corrupted after restarting from Windows. I noticed the problem with Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04. I feel like a problem regarding the bootloader version. AFAIK, 9.10 and 10.04 is using GRUB2 when 8.04 use the old version of GRUB. Will I have to switch to the legacy GRUB? (I would love to keep using GRUB2). If yes, I would like to know How.
