OpenSUSE Install :: Xorg Update - Boot Into Run Level 3 Stops

Jun 8, 2011

There was an xorg update that I did today (June 8) and when try to boot into runlevel 3, it stops when it gets to starting up sntp. I also saw that it said DHCP client not running. When I try again (push the power button) and allow it to do what it wants, everything seems to start up just fine. I'm asking about this because I need to re-install my NVIDIA graphics card driver. For the boot options, I've tried clearing the text (I don't remember what they are at the moment) and typing:

Code:
nomodeset 3
and when that failed, I've tried it as
Code:
nomodeset3
but still get stuck at the same spot. I've also tried it without clearing the text but still it gets stuck.

How can I get to runlevel 3 in order to re-install my graphics card driver? I cannot run my 3D software without it. Can I switch to runlevel 3 from the usual (normal GUI) screen? I can't remember the command. I'm running SuSE 11.4.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.4 Update - No More X11 Server (KDE) Running For Run Level 5

Jun 10, 2011

I played the apprentice sorcerer trying to install mysql workbench by my own and I messed up the system 11.1 by removing accidentally some libraries and decided to jump on 11.4 by using the update feature from the DVD. It worked all good (it seems at least: I didn't lost any datas and all my servers are running ok) but there is no more X11 server (kde) running for the run level 5.

I checked the inittab file and it is set to 5. I can log on root account and now I'm searching how to install kde on this new 11.4 system. I didn't yet tried the failsafe option at boot. Is there a way to set up kde from the internet, my wifi connection is ok ? I saw that yast was not installed nore zypper nore yum. Do I first try another update to fix it (if possible) from DVD?

OpenSUSE Install :: Update From X11:Xorg Breaks X?

Mar 2, 2009

I just got a set of updates from Xorg11 (Index of /repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_11.1/i586) repository and now, my X doesn't come up. During update, zypper complained about xorg-x11-libxcb and it didn't get updated. On further investigation I noticed that libxcb-xlib.so.0.0.0 is missing in the new package (version 7.4-4.2. The one currently installed in 7.4-1.24).

OpenSUSE Install :: KDE / Xorg Don't Start After Update

Aug 15, 2011

this evening I updated my 11.4 via KpackageKit then logged out when I did Xorg died and I was dumped on the text console.

Looking in the logs I see

Unfortunately I didn't check the update list too closely. The above seems to indicate that an Xorg component was updated but the kernel module wasn't.

OpenSUSE Install :: Xorg Don't Work After Kernel 2.6.27.42-0.1 Update?

Jan 18, 2010

After upgrading kernel, system (AMD 780G)refuses to start in graphic mode. Computer services running fine, but there's nothing or some trash on screen when X started. And no way how to get out except restarting or shutting down from remote computer.

Reinstalling, unistalling ATI driver doesn't help. Also manipulations with xorg.conf (install, safe etc previous file versions)doesn't help.

Sax2 detects videocard correctly, but result is same regardless which resolution@Hz is specified.

In logfiles I just can find this

OpenSUSE Install :: Stops At Boot But Can Boot As Root?

Jun 24, 2010

I'm new to OpenSuse and also fairly new to Linux in general. I installed OpenSuse 11.2 on a secondary machine and I really like it. However, during booting it stops somewhere half way, giving me only a black page but with a functioning cursor arrow. I can't do anything with it though. I re-booted in recovery mood and managed to boot up as root using the command 'startx'. How can I get back to "my own" log-in from here, with my own settings etc? There's obviously something missing during boot-up but where do I look?

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot Procedure Stops And Doesn't Continue By Itself?

Jul 18, 2010

I have an issue with normal boot (fail safe boot doesn't have this problem). The boot process just stops and nothing happens, I just see the green background, the white lizard and no moving progress bar. I've given it about 40min without touching it, but nothing happened. If I press escape, the last log print says its mounting/mounted the hard drive. Not until I touch the head pad or press a key, it wakes up and the boot procedure continues. I once had a similar problem on opensuse 11.1 which could require much tickling before booting up completely. This was never seen on 10.3, 11.0 and 11.2, but now its back in 11.3.

Fedora :: Problems With Run Level 5 And Xorg At Startup.

Jan 31, 2009

Hi. I'm using Fedora core 6 with NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8776-pkg1 driver.

Everytime my system boots with /etc/inittab set to "run level 5" the GUI login displays quickly and then just as quickly returns me to a console login. I know that X hasn't crashed, because i hit Ctrl + Alt + f7 and I have my regular login. Of course, I can't restart X from virtual console 1 as it is already running.

Has anybody had this problem? It only happens on occasion. What am I supposed to do?

OpenSUSE :: Move Transparently Between Run Level 3 And Run Level 5 As Autologin User?

Aug 10, 2010

I've been able to kludge a kill script which finds the correct pid for the kdeserver (or gnome server) after my system comes up in run level 5 so I can drop back to run level 3 mode. Lots of experimentation showed me that using telinit 3 and telinit 5 would occasionally leave the video memory in a mess and I would have the black screen of death.

I set the security parameter setting to autologin for me since I am the only user of my machine, but I still have to kludge the default setting under sysconfig (the DEFAULT_WM) under Window Manager to pick a certain window manager, so it takes time to manually switch the desktop.

Right now I can leave the gui and drop back to cli, but painful experimenting showed me that killing the X server is a no no. Right now I kill the kde server, which sends the SIGTERM to the X windows manager, which then figures out that it has to shut down.

Questions: Is there a better way of doing this? Apparently openSUSE figures that we have multiple users logging into the gui desktop, so the gui is always kept running and a login window with the desktop manager option forces the user to login in. With autologin, this never happens, but no choice of desktop is possible on the fly.

Can some type of script be set up to painlessly enable this to happen? And what is the best way of bringing either the Gnome or KDE desktop manager down gracefully? I do get lots of error messages as the system attempts to recover and X shuts down. It appears that apparently the single user with autologin is left out in the cold.

as many others I don't need CapsLock. I want to reassign it such that it has the function of AltGr. I use Kubuntu 9.10 but I think there must be a solution which is distribution independent.

I already tried to use setxkbmap or xmodmap. Using xmodmap at least I managed that CapsLock to behaves like Del by following this description.

But I could not achieve assigning the AltGr behavior to CapsLock.

OpenSUSE Install :: BIOS With A Boot Manager - Update Or Install?

Jan 7, 2010

I had my motherboard fail and had to do a replacement. The motherboard I got has a feature (I don't think I can shut off) that lets you select what drive you want to boot off of. I have XP installed on the first drive and openSUSE 11.1 on the second drive. I am running openSUSE 11.2 with KDE 3.5 and I simply dropped my drives onto this new motherboard. I can boot up (Linux) just fine but am having other issues with my mouse. I am thinking of Updating to openSUSE 11.2 and the current KDE version.

Should I just update to 11.2 or do a new install. I have LOTS of data in my home directory I really don't want to lose and have a partition for data as well that is pretty full. I don't want to lose this stuff. What should I do about Grub with this BIOS that lets you pick which drive to boot off of? Put Grub in the MBR of the drive with openSUSE on it and nuke the MBR of the XP drive?

After todays kernel update openSUSE 11.2 will not boot I have both Ubuntu 9.10 and openSUSE 11.2 dual booting and since I installed Ubuntu first, it is using the Ubuntu GRUB as my boot menu. After todays kernel update, when I select openSUSE 11.2 from the GRUB menu I get Error, you must open kernel first: Press any key to continue... Pressing a key reboots the machine. I'm thinking that the update did not update the GRUB menu from Ubuntu to open the new version kernel. How can I manually edit it or get GRUB to scan for the new kernel so openSUSE will boot?

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Boot, Can't Update?

Mar 18, 2011

I have upgraded from SuSE version 11.3 (which worked well) using zypper dup. Unfortunately, an earlier post regarding resolution of a CPU crash during boot turned out to be premature, as it is now intermittent. When booting, the system: (1) UDV reports a CPU crash (on-screen dump)(2) if the computer is reset (turned off, then on again), it will eventually either boot up normally (rare) or display a screen with a very wrong resolution setting. Repeatedly rebooting will eventually tease the system into normal operation, but it usually takes several attempts. Several Grub parameters have been tried but don't seem to make any difference. The display adapter is an Intel 845G for which a /etc/dhcpd.conf file has been configured.

(3) Once operating, the system cannot update, either using zypper up or the Gnome GUI update manager. Running zypper update from root yields:GLib-GIO:ERROR:gdbusconnection.c:2279:initable_init: assertion failed: (connection->initialization_error == NULL). After several such messages, the update proceeds, but locks up with: Retrieving: timezone-2011b_2011c-1.2.1_0.3.1.i586.delta.rpm [0% (0 B/s)]Interestingly, the download of timezone data often continues up to 74%, then stalls. Initially, the timezone file begins to download, but stops at 74%. The B/s then counts down to zero. The download attempt will time out, then continue to retry until manually aborted. The GLib error can be supressed with su - root, but update still fails with the timezone download.
