LIVECD of 11.3 Gnome works fine in my old PC. I installed several times and each time system freezes/crashes during boot. I am linux newbie, so, I am trying to figure out my problems. In Livecd I noticed Hardware info list's my SATA disk as IDE. Driver Modules: "ata_piix"Attached to: #24 (IDE interface). Is it right? I have posted Hardware information output in 01: None 00.0: 10105 BIOS [Created at bios.186] - Suse 11.3 install problem My machine specs are: Intel DG31PR motherboard, Intel core2duo, 3 GB DDR2 Ram, 250 GB SATA harddisk
View 3 Replies View Related want to say that I was a windows user just about a week ago. Then I installed ubuntu on a USB flash drive, just for fun, and now it's installed as main OS on my laptop and the only thing I use windows for is syncing my iPod touch with iTunes. (Yes, I know about other possibilities to copy music to it from ubuntu, but I want to continue using iTunes.)
Now my main problem is that since I installed ubuntu (10.10 Maverick Meerkat), my windows (Windows 7 Home Premium 32 Bit) sometimes crashes during startup. Sometimes it boots up perfectly normal, then in some cases it crashes at the first attempt to boot and when I retry and choose "Start Windows normally" it works just fine and then there are the times when it crashes everytime I try to boot. I wasn't able to find out why it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I also removed all USB devices during startup but that didn't change it.I noticed that when I start Windows in safe mode first, it works, then I restart and choose normal mode and it works too.Has anybody experienced this issue and/or knows a way to fix it? It's just annoying to have to try several times just to be able to keep my iPod synced.
So my problem is that i installed 10.04 on my compaq nx6315 and it crashes too much i did it like 7 times getting same results even with new downloads.IDK if i would run on troubles cause is an old release?

Here is some debug info:
I've installed Fedora 12 64bit, but the computer crashes while booting, basically after the irqbalance or rpcbind steps.
Here are photos of the error messages:
Here are my hardware specs:

The sound and network cards are integrated but I've tried disabling them from BIOS and the problem persists.
Note that I've tried Ubuntu (32bit and 64bit) and it also crashes about 30 seconds after loading the graphical interface (either installer or login screen). Fedora's graphical installer worked flawlessly, tho. I've also tried SLAX (using it right now) and it works without any problems.
Debian testing: $ uname -a Linux jilldando 2.6.32-trunk-486 #1 Sun Jan 10 05:53:18 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux Today I upgraded my PC with a Radeon HD 5550 video card, it has HDMI o/p with sound on it. After boot up I get get the usual sounds from the mother boards onboard intel sound card EXCEPT speech. Initially I thought it would just be that alsa might be piping synth usuage to the Radeon card so I edited the alsa-base.conf file. So I added the following to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf alias snd-card-4 snd_hda_intel
and changed: options snd_hda_intel index=0 to: options snd_hda_intel index=0,4 and rebooted, but this made no difference. Still startup sounds and sounds etc but no speech. I used the alsa project to check and these are the results: Code:

X crashes and reports a segmentation fault, address nil. I've been using the generic Radeon driver without any problems, until now.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a weird problem. Sometimes Ubuntu freezes when I'm booting up, sometimes not. I would say 2 out of 3 times it crashes, all other times it goes fine. I alway get past the GRUB bootscreen, then it starts loading. Towards the end or so, all of a sudden all disk activity stops and the screen hangs. Ctrl+C, Ctrl+Z, Escape, whatever buttons I press, it doesn't do anything.
I removed the "quiet" and "splash" boot options in GRUB so I could see in detail what is loading, but this doesn't make any more sense then before. The lines of text are always a bit different every time it happens so I can't really pinpoint when it goes wrong. Anyway, I don't see anything wrong with the output on my screen, I guess the real problem is not displayed.
I also tried booting into recovery mode. Also here this is strange. Sometimes I make it to the recovery screen with the options (resume, clean, netroot, ...), sometimes it crashes before that. When I get the recovery screen I choose "resume", this usually works and then I use "startx" to go into graphical mode. However, at other times, when I choose "resume" it freezes even before I get a login prompt.
So please guys, tell me, what is the problem here? How do I find out where I should start looking. Ubuntu sometimes freezes and when it does it doesn't alway happen at the same place as before. I know only 1 thing for certain, once I'm fully booted I don't have any problems whatsoever, everything seems to work flawlessly.
I am running a dual boot system with Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows7/XP. I am running kernel 2.6.35-24 (also tried 2.6.35-23, but no difference). I have an i5 CPU, so 64 bits. If you need any more information, just ask.
I have a small issue of Xorg. Every time I boot the ubuntu 9.04, the X will crash immediately after it started. Then, it will start again and shows the login interface. It went well after the second login. I don't know what caused this since there is no error message in /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/gdm/*.

first of all I would like to say that Im not a very advanced Ubuntu (8.04 Hardy Heron) user. I have used it a couple of months, and got a long with it fine.. Yet, suddenly everytime I boot the Laptop the screen is Black with white lines, (no the monitor is not broken). When it asks me to chose a O.S. I have tried different ones. I can get into recovery mode without problems. Yet, when I start any other version (Ive got different ones, .16,.17 (I dont know why)) it freezes at the login screen. I can move the mouse but the caps lock doesnt even work. Sometimes (1 in 20 times) I do get to login, but after about 2-5 minutes the computer freezes.. (again i can move the mouse but nothing else works). Thats why I wont be able to use Gparted or any other programs to completely delete Ubuntu! I dont have another pc, so I wont be able to download that either.
What I have tried is reinstalling Ubuntu, yet it just kept the other Ubuntu versions no the computer. What I would like to know from you guys, how can I delete everything that is on my harddrive, so I can use the Ubuntu CD to reinstall? And yet another question, what problems could there be with my computer? I don't have windows, could it still be a virus? What parts of the laptop could cause this problem?I know that I have been quite repetitive throughout this post, I just want to cover everything.
I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04.
I'd like to boot using Windows 7 boot manager (I don't dare to put grub in the MBR).
I've used EasyBCD to add a new entry for Ubuntu.

Then I added Grub to /dev/sda3
And I get this:
[url]
The problem is that it always shows (hd0,0) instead of (hd0,2). I must change it every time I boot. I've tried to install grub again but I always get the same.
And another problem. After that Grub menu it deesn't load Linux but it loads a second grub menu [url] that loads Linux properly.
I guess I've installed two Grubs.
How can I remove the first Grub menu (Grub4dos) and make Windows 7 load the second (the good one)? or how can I remove the second one and change (hd0,0) to (hd0,2) in the second?
I have a older computer that i am trying to load ubuntu on it. I can put in the CD and restart the computer and the boot menu will pop up, I can click any of the options like install ubuntu or anything else but once i click it, it will take me the another screen where it will say loading... please wait then it goes away and i sit there looking at a black screen for 20 minutes while nothing happens. What is wrong why cant i install ubuntu, or anything else except for windows.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Studio 14 laptop with Windows 7 64bit preinstalled. The processor is core i5 and the machine has 4GB RAM. I freed 25GB of memory from my Hard disk and tried to install Ubuntu 10.04 (AMD). Everything went fine. I restarted and Logged into Ubuntu. It worked like a charm. Then I restarted to Windows7. This also worked well as expected.
But, when I rebooted again, I got a black screen saying that No modules found. Press any key to restart
When I press a key, it says No operating system found, probably after checking through a network (it printed lines starting with PXE).
I tried exactly in the same way with Ubuntu 8.04 in my machine, and this worked without any problem. The Bootloader was not corrupted after restarting from Windows. I noticed the problem with Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04. I feel like a problem regarding the bootloader version. AFAIK, 9.10 and 10.04 is using GRUB2 when 8.04 use the old version of GRUB. Will I have to switch to the legacy GRUB? (I would love to keep using GRUB2). If yes, I would like to know How.
I loaded the Pre-Release version of Ubuntu 10.10.1 32 bit workstation. It ran mostly fine for about a 2 months. Then I did an online update and it told me that I had to reboot. When I did, I booted to a splash screen and then a dead machine with a black screen where control-alt-delete does nothing, no disk activity, no mouse, no keyboard, totally dead. Had to hit reset button. I booted to a suse partition and hacked the grub entry to remove the splash and silent to get more spew at boot time. The last thing before the screen goes black is starting NBD client. I have my email and various directories on my central server so I need NFS. Is there a way I can hack my way to get it to boot even without NFS temporarily to possibly rebuild the nbd kernel module? I have looked at the /var/log/ syslog, daemon, debug, kern messages and gdm log files and don't see any indication of why it crashed. Where else can I look?
View 3 Replies View RelatedBefore the installation, I had triple boot of WinXP, Win 7, Ubuntu 10.10. As you can guess, the main boot-loader was grub. The second is Win 7 boot loader, and there it gives the option what to choose, load XP or Win 7.I made a decision to remove Ubuntu and install Debian(you know better than me why I did). So first, I searched a guide how to un-dual-boot. It told me to delete the two partition that Ubuntu use(swap and ext4) and write to MBR the win 7 boot-loader(using EasyBCD), so I delete them and use EeasyBCD. At this stage, I had 2 partitions: NTFS for XP and NTFS for Win 7, and the Win 7 boot-loader(and XP) worked pretty well.I install the latest testing of Debian(6 RC2) from DVD1 using this guide, except I choose to use the graphical installer, ext4(not ext3 as there), install the desktop environment, and choose to install grub(even know it didn't asked me). The swap partition I set is 3 GB because my RAM is 2 GB, even know that ubuntu set it in the past to 2 GB.The installation went pretty well, just when come to grub package, it says that there was an error with installing grub package(it didn't told me what), I had no choice, so I choose to skip over grub/lilo and finish with no boot manager. I was thinking to myself: "So I couldn't install grub, at least I have the Win 7 boot-loader(which contain XP loader), and maybe Win 7 boot-loader will recognize Debian too.". But I end up with no boot at all.It told me than when choose not to install boot-manager that I need to load /vmlinuz and give it the parameter root=/dev/sda4(my deb partition).I think that if I could install grub, I could load all my boots("sudo grub update" right?).How can I fix it?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI wanted to replace the Nouveau with the proprietary Nvidia driver. I removed Nouveau and changed to console mode with "init 1". Realizing that i did not properly save the binary file i switched back to graphic mode with "init 5" only to have the system freeze. I rebooted and chose the usual kernel in the grub menu. The system continued to load but froze right after the Fedora logo (which hides the textual loading details) finished loading. I can not even switch to a console with ctrl-alt-F1.

I am new to opensuse, having migrated from Ubuntu. I have had some difficulty with power management on Ubuntu so i decided to install opensuse with kde as i heard it was good for laptops. I have had lots of trouble getting opensuse 11.4 to boot properly and to run without freezing.
I have trawled the forums and bugzilla and the documentation, e.g. SDB:ATI - openSUSE and SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE. Consequently i am now able to boot (normally), however whenever i open any application, e.g. Dolphin file manager, Firefox, etc, the tab starts to load (little circle starts spinning on the tab), and then it freezes.
At this point I can exit X Windows and enter the text mode. I have repeated this with the FGLRX and Radeon drivers running. This is always repeatable. I can also boot into level 3 and do things there.
My computer details are:
HP Pavilion dv6 3032TX
Processor - Intel i7 720 QM
Ram - 6GB
GPU - ATI Mobility Radeon 5650
Harddrive - 640GB 5400rpm
[Code]...
What i have tried so far:
1. First 4 steps on SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE
2. Install and run FGLRX
Note that i cannot failsafe boot - it never boots into X Windows and just hangs. I really do like the look and feel of opensuse and would love to use it, but at this point my only option is to try another distro.
i want to install opensuse on my new lap top i partition my hard (600gb) with 5 parts:
c: 97 gb
d: 150 gb
e: 150 gb
f: 100 gb
g: 50 gb
and 38 gb unlocated part
in opensuse instalation , the yast makes a 2gb for swap 14gb = root , 21 gb = home, but in Instalation Overview under Booting has a red error: the Boot loader Installed On a Partition that does not Lie Entirely Blew 128 GB .The system maight Not Boot;
I have upgraded TO Ubuntu 11.04 with a dual boot but now find that I cannot boot my PC at all. I am wondering if it is because I allowed the PC to reboot with the Ubuntu 10.10 CD in the drive.
The text on screen is sh grub:>Does this mean that Griub is present and waiting for a command? if so, what? Or is there a more serious error going on?
I installed ubuntu 9.04 but no boot at all (on a powermac G4 cube)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 10.10 fully installed on my laptop, I am trying to get my main drive partitioned so I can install windows as well, only problem is that I can't do that without using my live CD to unmount the drive. Heres the big problem, my CD just wont boot. when I try to boot from it nothing happens and my computer just starts up as normal as if there was no CD in the first place. I have set my CD drive as my main boot device in BIOS so I know thats not the problem, and I have also tried using an external USB drive to boot from with the same results. I used the same drives and CD to do the install just a few days ago so I'm fairly certain that they are not the problem. The only thing that I can think of that might be causing trouble is that when I installed I got a black screen on my first boot (caused by my nvidia drivers apparently)and had to edit my GRUB a little to fix it.
