Though this was just a problem I was having with "amarok," however, It has come to my attention on "Ktorrent" as well.What is the connection? They are both based on the KDE desktop environment.Any "KDE" based program (GTK+?) will crash my GUI (im not sure if its called xserver or xorg or whatever). How do I go about diagnosing this problem? All the other programs run without crashing the computer, however, when I run "amarok" and "ktorrent" (both KDE bassed) my GUI crashes and restarts back to the login screen.
When I put sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg into terminal then hit the return key it asks for my password which I put in, it then seems to do nothing it doesn't open the xserver page to make any changes.
PROBLEM: My computer has an nvidia video card. I'd like to remove the packages that support ati and radeon. When I try to remove xserver-xorg-video-ati or xserver-xorg-video-ati, the package manager wants to remove xserver-xorg-video-all.
QUESTION: Is it safe to remove xserver-xorg-video-all? Obviously, I want to keep support for my nvideo card.
So, after the last Update, my PC crashes when trying to load Xserver. I can boot in the "recovery mode" from grub and then choose "resume" from the menu. This takes me to tty1. From there if I try to startx my computer crashes again and I'm left with a black screen with no hints as to what went wrong. I even tried

But the file stays empty because apparently my computer hangs before it has the chance to write anything to it.
Finally, I went to the /etc/X11 directory and searched for any xorg.conf backup files. I only found a xorg.conf.fglrx-0 which I renamed to xorg.conf and tried to load xserver again with the exact same result.
Happy to get a lot of my computers now working fine with Debian 8 ...

This computer with an Athlon 64 2800+ and 1GB of DDR RAM, destined to be a BOINC worker until the end of his life, had the chance to upgrade with a Debian 7.8.0 (LXDE) few times ago (after long years of Windows XP services). And the only thing I had to set was the wireless card (firmware-b43-installer, adduser me netdev, and it was good) and it was perfecly working. Apt-get was giving to me creepy old versions of software, so it was the only thing that disturbed me, but let's go for the brand new Debian 8.0
But now with Debian 8.0, the graphics are bad, resolution is bad too.
I first tried with "lightdm" and "mate-desktop-environment" because of the LXDE icons that were fine on every computer with 7.8.0 but distorted and cropped with Debian 8 on every computer too (how is it simply possible for the mainteners to find it ok ). Seeing that my SiS card was not working well, I tried to reinstall everything with Debian 8 and LXDE as before... and hope icons will be repaired soon. But the problem with my video card is still present.
Then, I realised that on my Debian 7.8.0 computers, xserver-xorg-video-sis is available and installed. But not available anymore on Debian 8.0

I have Lenovo 3000 n200. I'm new in debian, but it's great to me! I wan't to stay with this distro, but i Can't upgrade this to testing or unstable version. Lenny have too old packagges for me. All versions of squeeze (downloaded or upgrade from lenny) is broken. I can't run xorg. For about 2 weeks i'm serching for answer and i only found that this is xserver-xorg-conf. That's true this is the package that is broken, but cannot install this.
When i upgade system the synaptic package manager write me one package is broken (xserver-xorg-conf), so i delete it and install one more time. This same problem. So i downloaded and i have this same problem. When i restart system i cannot run xserver and gnome.
I experienced this problem on Friday but didn't have time to write a warning.A couple of days ago, xserver-xorg-core 2:1.10.2-1+b1 reached Testing before a corresponding dependency (recommendation), thus breaking the hardware acceleration. I'm running ubuntu 10.10 I have a Samsung Syncmaster 205BW Monitor and I needed a graphic accelerator to run my science software and to view full screen videos. so I installed the NVIDIA 96.43.19 Driver as recomanded by unbuntu. Well the server installs OK but doesn't completely communicate with my monitor, I'm using GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X/AGP/SSE2 Graphic card. I'm unable to set the correct Resolution which is 1680X1050, the driver only list 1280X1024 and doesn't list the correct one.Also the driver Crashes when I try to set the CPU scaling, it's locked on stretch mode. Also when ubuntu loads X it doesn't accept the Xserver settings I have entered in the driver Set Up.The additional driver screen also says the Driver is active but not in use. I sent a bug report to NVIDIA but they never answered me back.
I am running Debian 7.0 Wheezy amd64...I installed Debian's nvidia driver earlier but I was having a few issues with OpenGL. So I removed those drivers using "apt-get remove nvidia*" and installed proprietry NVIDIA's driver from their website.Now the issue is, my apt-get/synaptic does not work anymore because it is trying to remove xserver-xorg-video-nvidia and failing to do so.

Just did an upgrade in Wheezy and found my synaptics touchpad borked. Here goes the problem: I have a Amilo M7400 notebook with an Intel 82852/82855 GME video card, and X is a bit uncompatible with it.I've tried using the vesa driver in the xorg.conf, but when i start Xserver, it hangs hard in a blank screen. I can't open a new terminal and control+alt+backspace won't work.

Ive been having some problems with a Compaq computer with Lubuntu installed. The problem is that Xorg crashes at random displaying a white distortion on the screen and it usually doesn't let me go to a terminal and i have to force a shutdown. the same happened when I tried to install Ubuntu but worse. Another side effect is that lubuntu at boot up displays its logo in 16-bit colors and then goes to normal colors.
I have a small issue of Xorg. Every time I boot the ubuntu 9.04, the X will crash immediately after it started. Then, it will start again and shows the login interface. It went well after the second login. I don't know what caused this since there is no error message in /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/gdm/*.
I've been having some problems with xorg and sometimes when I go into a fullscreen app such as Supertux (The stable package) or Sonic Adventure DX in Wine and exit out of those applications or any other ones my whole X-server crashes.I'm using an Intel GMA965 card on an inspiron 1525 laptop
When I switch my KVM over to my Ubuntu box, the Wacom tablet causes X to crash about 1 out of every 4 times. I will usually see what I'm supposed to for a split second, get a blank screen and/or command line for a second, then I'm back at the login screen.

If the tablet is plugged directly into the KVM, it crashes every time. Instead, I have the tablet plugged into my Mac laptop, which is itself plugged into the KVM (TrendNet USB w/audio).
Xorg seems to crash randomly and with no real reason. Once it does, I can't restart it. If I try to restart it with GDM, nothing will happen. However once it crashes, Ubuntu's low graphics mode window pops up. Telling it to reconfigure the xorg config seems to do nothing for my problem. I will still crash after words.
Right now I'm running in an earlier kernel, hoping this will keep it from crasgubg
I'm trying to install Kubuntu 9.10 on my machine (I had the same problem with Kubuntu 9.04). The machine is:

When I try to install Kubuntu, after disk partition, my system dosn't see the CD. He tell me to insert disk into drive but I doesn't touch it. I resolved this mounting an external hard disk into /cdrom. After this, the installation continues until the step "select and install software". My system is a Gigabyte GA-P35-DQ6 with Radeon 5770. The system was rock solid and everything working fine until the latest update I applied 30 minutes ago. The system is stuck on the little circle icon before the login screen.
I'm not able to ssh or telnet to the machine to check the log files. I edited my grub.conf a while back and I don't seem to be able to call up the recovery kernel. I can read up on the grub options.
I was told that I could create multiple websites ona single machine useing Virutual Hosts.I have RedHat Linux 9 running Apache/2.0.40. I want to make offline test sites to learn with and have read it is as simple as changing /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf file but I have not been able to make it work yet. I've freshly installed Debian Lenny 5.03 with xfce from cd, but I'm having intermittent problems with X. Mostly X will startup fine, but occasionally it crashes. If I'm lucky, it will just shutdown and just return me to the text-mode login. But if I'm unlucky, it freezes completely, such that even the alt-SysRq key combos won't work.

I'm using the most recent version of Xorg that is available in the Debian repository (unstable) and it flashes the NVIDIA logo and crashes the whole computer immediately after. Ctrl+Alt+F[0-9] do nothing when this happens.
I've tried reverting to an older NVIDIA driver, but they either cause the same issues (27x.y.z) or require version ignoring for ABI (26x.y.z) which leads to a segfault.
I would be fine running vesa for now, but it doesn't support 1366x768 resolution so I either have to deal with a bad resolution or have part of the screen cut off.
After I updated several software including Xorg server using "slackpkg update", I Ignorantly deleted configuration files without backing them up making Xorg server crashes.I try to build Xorg.conf using xorgsetup command but it crashes and spews:

I have a Radeon 4850 Graphic Card with ATI Catalyst as its driver, so I try to reinstall the driver hoping that it will fix the problem, which is a bad logic I admit it, and It fails to uninstall (for some reason the uninstall script is gone) and reinstall (problem with file extraction).
