I just made a fresh installation of Ubuntu Karmic, but I can't set up my screen resolution correctly. My monitor resolution (1680 x 1050) is not listed in 'Display Preferences' or in my card's proprietary software (ATI Catalyst). The maximum resolution I can select is 1440 x 900.xrandr detects a maximum resolution of 1440 x 1440 and displays the same list of screen resolutions as 'Display Preferences'.

Having a problem with my Belkin wireless adapter when trying to stream music to my Pinnacle Soundbridge.The network connection is usually rock steady but drops anywhere between and few second and a few minutes after streaming music. Network manager still shows the connection to my home network as active but it is not. The connection comes back when I unplug the dongle and plug it back in. I found the following message repeated in the syslog

Only thing I have noticed is that it refers to rt2x00 when I had thought it used the rt73usb driver.Had the PC and the Soundbridge for a number of years without any problems but I did recently have to reinstall Ubuntu from scratch. Currently running Ubuntu 10.10
rencently, i move develop env from one linux machine to another, two linux have same gcc and make version, but at new linux machine make warning/error messages dont show color font(in old linux machine, warning messages is yellow, but now, it is white).so, when make, there are all white messages, i cant focus on warning and error.
Mandriva 2009, BIND 9.5.0-P2. Named will start however I'm getting the above error as well as these:

Named shows to be running but with the errors above I know it's not running correctly. I also copied the above dir's over to /var/lib/named/var/lib/named which is where I 'believe' it's chroot'd at, though I could be wrong since I'm unfamiliar with chroot.

looking at the source code I think the problem is related at the depth of my system 24 bit and the depth of this old piece of code 8 bit. Unfortunately also I don't have experience in programming the XVideo and if someone can give me some help in programming the XVideo interface
During installation at, Select and install software, i had this extra option "Packages to install: rt2x00-source", and answered yes. sources.list has main and contrib sections.

This is a a one TB drive with plenty of space. I tried manually creating the directory with the same result to mkdir. USB drive mounted as /media/sdb5:
IS there a way to change the Font color of the top menu (File, edit, view History, etc) in firefox or all windows? I'm using a skin that I love but cannot read the menus at the top because the color is blending in.
I'm using the Divergence theme, and I'm loving the transparent top panel. However, the font is dark, so I can't see anything! How can I change the font so it's white, but without changing other system fonts?

I keep forgetting to change the font color to black in OpenOffice.org in Lucid. This is a pain when printing, but the bigger problem is with writing up formulae. How do you change colors in Math (or make it default to black)?
I found an old thread from 2005 on how to change the font color on the gnome-panel. It worked for all applets on the panel except for the notification area and me-menu where the font remains dark.
How can i force the font to a light color on these two applets?
Also as i used the "clarlooks" theme for controls the status indicator is duplicated:
There is one instance in the me-menu and another in the notification area. How can i remove either? I find that the gnome-panel is a real hassle since 10.04. Not only it is not logically constructed, but it is inconsistent and not customisation friendly.
I am working with a template.css file, and I want to change the color of the font in part of the header from black to blue. Is there syntax that can be inserted into the file to accomplish this?
I'm trying to change the font color of the text of the bootloader in Grub2. I'm running 9.10. I successfully edited the Grub cfg file change the colors of the Grub menu, but I'd like to change the text color as I watch the modules load and can't seem to do it. I'd also like to password protect the bootloader if possible. I installed startupmanager but the new version won't allow these changes. I like to see my modules as they load and wanted to change the color from white to blue.
Although Win7 is not bad either, I'm really happy using new Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat on my notebook. Since I've been using Linux (SimplyMepis, then Arch) on my desktop, I'm really happy that I found a Linux distro which suits me the best. BTW, I have a Toshiba T130-10g which I love for its long battery life. However, I would like to solve some issues/dilemmas/questions (and I searched for s the solutions of some of them on Google so please don't tell me to use it...)
1) How do I turn off Wifi completely in a comfortable way? I tried sudo iwconfig wlan0 txpower off but it threw: Error for wireless request "Set Tx Power" (8B26): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported. I even edited something in interfaces configuration file, but it did nothing. Oh, I forgot, my notebook doesn't have a hardware switch to turn off wifi.
2) Setting brightness doesnt work for my laptop. I can set it by udo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=25 but I'm looking for a more comfortable solution. BTW, editing one GRUB configuration file didn't help and ended in booting into command line (it was something with adding backlight=vendor or something like that...)
3) My touchpad is sometimes too sensitive and clicks somewhere sometimes when I don't want to it. How to make clicks less sensitive? I tried to play with some mouse settings but it didn't help much but perhaps I'm setting a bad parameter.
4) I remember that back in KDE 3.5 times a network manager icon had a setting to switch on net statistics so I could very easily see how much I downloaded every day. But, since KDE 3.5 is not supported anymore, I stopped using it in refusal to update to KDE 4.XX and switched to GNOME. Since for some months I'll have a limited download connection, is there something esay in GNOME to watch my net statistics that wouldn't be deleted after reboot/shutdown?...
Does anyone know how to change the font color for the clock applet? I have a dark background on my desktop and want the panel to be transparent but I can't read the clock.

I'm using Robolinux Cinnamon which is Debian 8.2 (fantasic OS btw). I usually use a blank, black wallpaper but the default color of the icon font is black. I googled this question for about an hour before I came here. How to change the icon font color on the desktop to white?
I am testing some boot splash screens but the ones I like most are darker and therefore the black font color during boot, well, shows on dark grey or black background, so I can't see.
I would like to change the font color of the messages, but not the results (green=DONE, red=FAILED, etc., I don't want to change that, only the messages like "doing fast boot", "Loading CPUfreq", and all the ones loading stuff, mounting, etc.).

Basically I want to change the resolution on my computer as the desktop is partially lost off of the screen. The needed resolution is not available so I am attempting to add a new resolution. I have used the [URL] for information on how to do this. I am completely new to Ubuntu and entering code so a TON of the results online have meant jibberish to me as people leave out the basics which I cannot find. I recently ran into the following problem when trying to ssh into my Ubuntu 11.04 server:

I don't know for sure, but I think this happened after one of the latest Ubuntu updates I installed. In case it's of relevance, I'm remoting in from Terminal (Mac OS X 10.7 - Lion). Edit: The problem seems to be with Lion..

I use hcitool to scan for my device, and find'it. Next, i connect to my phone with success.
