I have a Windows-only language lab program ('Logolab') which provides students with listen and repeat exercises on audio and video material loaded by the teacher. It operates in conjuction with a Firebird database which stores subtitles (I think) and the sequencing data (the lengths of each segment) for recording (a recorded piece will be subdivided into small audio/video segments during which the student repeats what's been said). The audio and video functions are run internally by Windows Media Player, and the video input must be in .WMV format for the system to function.Using Wine, I've managed to install the language lab program on Ubuntu, as well as the Firebird database program. However, each time I start the language lab program, I get the message "Firebird database not started!".There is a BIN folder with the language lab software that contains a .INI file with the following contents:
Perhaps that needs to be modified for Linux or Wine on Linux? I've tried changing the DataBase field with the Linux path to the appropriate .FDB file, and likewise the ServerName field to the Ubuntu computer name or the ip address, but to no avail. Lately, I've installed the Linux version of Firebird and Flame Robin (which I couldn't understand). If anyone can provide any help or suggestions, I'd be most grateful (it's the only thing preventing me from migrating 100% to Linux).
How can I uninstall / purge wine and any wine installed windows programs?I've tried deleting .wine (hidden folder)but in /usr/bin/ there are a number of wine related files. And wine sub menu still appears in Applications menu
View 6 Replies View RelatedI don't know if it's just my system, but after applying the latest Wine update, the mouse cursor in Wine windows is now purple/magenta/pink, whatever. Not a big problem, just annoying. I've looked through the various config files in ~home and /usr/share/wine, and can't find any parameter that might even remotely address this.

Wine won't run the Windows XP version of the software. There's also a Mac version but I'm not sure if it would be easier to get that working. This is the error I get. After which, the application doesn't start (but it runs in the background):

I have the application set to run with Windows XP compatibility, but no luck. I think my only option is to install Windows through VirtualBox/Qemu, but as I don't have a Windows install CD for this computer (only a 64bit CD, I need 32) I don't know if it'll be possible. I have a 64bit processor (C2D T7250), but Ubuntu is installed as 32bit. Will VB or Qemu accept my 64bit installation CD?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a windows app I run under wine that always displays a blank dos window first when I run it directly from a link to application on my desktop.I wrote a bash script to run it and put that in a link to application and that works without the blank dos window. Why doesn't the first way work?
Long version:I have a small old windows application that stores all my passwords. I like it because it's simple and I can access it (dual boot) from Windows or Linux. It just displays a very simple window with a list of accounts and clicking on one of those opens a child window with the details. It has no graphics or anything fancy. On the windows side, installing it
was as simple as unzipping it and creating a desktop shortcut for it - no setup at all.
On the Linux side (kubuntu hardy), I created a link to application on my desktop with Command set to
wineconsole /media/windoze/Program Files/Passkeeper/pass32.exe and work path set to/media/windoze/Program Files/Passkeeper
It works fine, but when I start it up, I always get a blank dos window on the screen first and then the application window appears. I have to manually minimize the dos window to get it out of the way. It does nothing useful by itself. But, if I close it, it closes the application with it.I tried to run it as as wine instead of wineconsole, but that does nothing at all - at least on the screen and dmesg.
I want to now is it possible to use and how to configure to work program My Heritage try Wine? Please help its important to me.P.S I'am totaly noob regarding Ubuntu netbook remix

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using Compiz, and am trying to use Animations to make only Gloobus Preview (Window name= gloobus-preview) open with one of three animations. I have selected Horizontal Folds, Sidekick, and Zoom in Random Effects, made a new item for Open, set its duration to 200, set it to Random, and have tried everything possible to try and get only Gloobus Preview to have an animation, but nothing works. I can get everything except Gloobus Preview to have an animation, but if I do the opposite, then nothing works. If I set it to "any", then Gloobus Preview animates, but so does everything else. I would like for nothing to have an open animation except for Gloobus Preview. How can I do this in Compiz's Animations?

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 with current updates. I installed MS Office 2007 suite using WINE - the other users are not comfortable with OpenOffice. There are no issues with the installation, but it is in my user home path so it doesn't appear in the WINE config when I log in as another user. Should I start over with a generic user account and re-install Office/ WINE under that user?
