Ubuntu Installation :: Running Windows 7 Natively Through Wine?
Dec 1, 2010
I've been thinking recently about switching to Ubuntu as my full time OS, BUT I still like aspects of windows, and want to use some of its features. My question is this to you:Is there any way (and if so, how?) for me to run Windows 7 natively on Ubuntu as well as seamlessly using wine?

I have a VirtualBox 3.1.2 image of Debian 5.0.2 running on Windows XP SP3. I would like to export that Debian image to a USB harddrive such that I could boot to that drive and run it natively. Is that possible to do with a VDI?

I've managed to convince a few of my Backgammon playing buddies to try Linux as an OS and they're impressed with it. However there doesn't seem to be a Backgammon software available which performs well on Linux. We've tried running Windows Backgammon softwares on Wine but these don't perform well if at all. Will there be a Backgammon application available for Linux soon or is it available in Software Manager under another name? In the meantime does anyone know of one which will work well on Wine for now?

I'm somewhat knew to Linux (CentOS), so WINE is completely foreign to me also. I'm immediately interested in TaxAct, which is how I learned about WINE. My question is whether my system will maintain the same stability that Linux is known for, and whether my CentOS build will keep it's current RHEL integrity after I install WINE, and probably other Windows Apps. Your experience with WINE is coveted.

I have a problem running a game on a fresh Slackware64 install.
Slack version is 13.37
I've followed alien bobs instructions for a multilib environment from here:[url]
And then used sbopkg to download and compile wine version 1.2.2, which went through just fine.
After that I grabbed cabextract from sbopkg and ran this: wget [url] sh winetricks d3dx9 To get the DX9.
But, when I try to run the game, this is the error I get:
Code:
The game it self ran perfectly on the 32 bit version of Slackware, tested with 13.0. So now I think I'm missing some libs or something, but I have no clue which.

Currently I am running Ubuntu 9.04 on my computer, and it is the only OS installed. I purchased the $30 student WIn7 Professional upgrade. I have a XP Pro CD + Key, and I plan on using that just to upgrade to Win7. I love Ubuntu and it is my primary OS, it is just that every now and then you come across some program that requires windows (Propellerhead Reason 4, Adobe Photoshop CS4, Atomix Virtual DJ etc.) and it requires full system resorces so you do not want to use wine. I love Linux, but somtimes I just have to use WIndows, so I do not want to hear any arguments about that.
I want to do a clean install of everything, and I have data + programs backed up, I would like to install Ubuntu 9.10, WinXP Pro and I want to Upgrade XP Pro to 7. I am completely new to GRUB 2, and upgrading windows; but I have experience with Linux and Windows, and dual booting. I would like to install Ubuntu 9.10 on its own partition (No WUBI), and WInXP + Win 7 on there own partitions (3 Partitions Overall). I would like to know what to do at this point, Should I install Ubuntu then Xp then 7, Xp then 7 then Ubuntu, etc. I know how to make Partitions, I just need to know the order in which I should install the operating systems, and how to get it to dual boot.
MY COMPUTER:
I had a Sony Vaio PCV-RS530G, and the mobo failed, so I rebuilt it, the case, processor, fans, CD/Floppy drives, TV tuner and power supply are unchanged, everyhing else has been replaced, here is the breakdown:
Proecessor: Intel Pentium 4 3.20 GHZ, HT Technology, No 64-Bit or VT-x
Motherboard: Biostar P4M900-M4
Hard Disk Drive: Seagate 1TB SATA (IDE Mode, no RAID)
Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS, PCI Express, 512 MB RAM
RAM: 2 GB Corsair, DDR2-5300
1) How can I install all the screen savers that were in Jaunty, but are missing in karmic?
2) Can Win7 be installed without a key, and then have the key entered later (I AM NOT PIRATING, I JUST WANT TO PUT THE KEY IN AND ACTIVATE AFTER I CAN TEST OUT EVERYTHING AND MAKE SURE THAT WINDOWS AND UBUNTU ARE RUNNING SMOOTHLY)
3) Will XP mode in Win7 work on a processor without virtualization technology?
4) I have Icon sets, cursors, window borders, and panel backgrounds from different sources, can I export this as a complete theme in 1 file (Deb Packages are preferable, but even a tar-ball is fine) so I can install it easily on more machines, and share it with friends?
5) How do you use native windows DLLs in WINE?
6) My PC has a tv tuner, how do I use it in Ubuntu?
7) What is a good size for a swap partition for my computer (Detailed information below)?

I don't know if it's just my system, but after applying the latest Wine update, the mouse cursor in Wine windows is now purple/magenta/pink, whatever. Not a big problem, just annoying. I've looked through the various config files in ~home and /usr/share/wine, and can't find any parameter that might even remotely address this.

I am trying to install a program named "Ntrip" with wine, running Linux Mint 10 64bit (based on Ubuntu 10.04) I installed the software without problems, when I try to start it I get the following error:
Code:
fixme:actctx:parse_manifest_buffer root element is L"asmv1:assembly", not <assembly>
wine: Install the Windows version of Mono to run .NET executables
As far as I know, mono is by default on every Ubuntu 10.04 installation, however as per the error message, I installed the Windows version of Mono via Wine successfully. Trying to start the program again, still coming up with above error.

I have installed the repositories of wine but I cant 'force' install the 1.1.31 version. The current wine version sucks big time and none of the games I play work well, hell wine 1.1.41 (or whatever crap the latest version is called) has now caused some serious graphics issues for me. I am having to align my desktop every single time I boot, which is well. Any solutions regarding installing wine 1.1.31 on 10.04?

Is there any program in Ubuntu that can open .docx files natively? I know that open office can open .doc files, but I need a program that can open .docx files. It also has to be able to read the embedded data, such as text themes and bibliography data. Conversion is no good. I have been using Office 2007 through Crossover, but for some reason it can only have one window open at a time, which severely limits what I can do.

I can only get dial-up at home and need to install package upgrades upwards of 40MB, so.... pretty much impossible. When needed, I usually generate a download script and individually enter each line into a web browser on my Windows based work computer, which has broadband, saving to a USB drive.
The last upgrade though requires too many packages (230+) to do individually. Is there an easy, quick way to run the download scripts on a windows machine?

In short, what I'd like to find is a workaround to install Grub2 onto a USB stick, from a PC running Windows, without using a GUI. After searching, I don't find any way to install Grub2 from Windows. I do have a nice little MS-DOS batch file that installs syslinux onto a USB stick. It's simple, fairly fool-proof, and I'd like to convert it to install Grub2.Did find an example of running grub-install without actually installing anything: grub-install --grub-setup=/bin/true /dev/sdaSo, IFAIKT, this just creates the Grub2 'boot.img' file, and maybe also modifies the 'core.img' file? Is that right? If so, then a little DOS utility to write a USB's MBR using the boot.img should work, yes?
However, I notice the boot.img file is 512 bytes. As I understand it, a drive's partition table is included in that space. I'd like to take that boot.img and use it to install Grub2 on any arbitrary USB stick, without altering the existing partition table. If I snip off the last 72 bytes so the image is only 440 bytes, it seems like this should work (assuming that every USB stick will have Grub2 installed in the /boot/grub subdirectory). If this sounds right, is there a DOS-based MBR update utility that you would recommend? I find several, such as MBRUtility, MBRWizard, and MBRFix, among others

I've downloaded and installed WINE, works well with most windows programs I run. I recently downloaded a program called METT (micro expression training tool), and apparently it needs a disc to be ran. Well, I installed KISO and mounted the image there, but I still can't get it to run.

I am getting ready to buy a wireless N adapter for my computer but I want to make sure its natively supported. I don't want to have to use ndiswrapper or manufacturer supplied drivers. I have been looking on newegg and I think I have narrowed it down to two choices. One has the Atheros AR9285 chipet and the other has the Realtek RTL8188RE chipset. I am fairly certain that the Atheros is natively supported since according to the newegg reviews it is. However the Realtek one is cheaper but I can't seem to find any information on whether or not its supported.

Does anyone know of any way (preferably fully documented/tutorialed, but even theoretical would be great) to remotely install Ubuntu to a machine currently running Windows...
We have 8 machines powering a digital signage system. The machines are not physically accessible (without extreme difficulty) and are currently running windows XP with a VNC server for control.
I want them to run Ubuntu instead. Is there any way anyone can think of that I can do this? My only thought so far is WUBI...but once it boots into Ubuntu ssh isn't installed by default and vnc isn't enabled by default so I wouldn't be able to control it.
Also I'd really like to completely wipe out Windows and use only Ubuntu.

First post, and I apologize if it's already been covered and/or I put this in the wrong section, but I couldn't find anything quite like what I was looking for. Basically, I have been running Ubuntu on my backup machines for near a year now and I LOVE it. I want to move my main machine over to Ubuntu as well but there is one thing standing in my way: namely, my Steam collection.
I've seen on several websites and forum threads that Steam and its games run fairly well through Wine, but I've never used Wine before and am kind of nervous about setting this all up. My question is, is there any tutorial available that can walk me through getting steam working through Wine without issues? I've gotten fairly used to linux at this point, so I'm not afraid of the shell, I'm just looking for a little guidance. Also, a side question: I play Garry's Mod all the time, which I could see having lot of potential problems running on linux due to all the addons and stuff. Have any of you ever played Gmod on Ubuntu before? And if so does it work ok with most of the addons?

i recently installed wine, steam, and team fortress 2 so that i could play it. They all installed just fine except for not getting fonts but i did that manually. The problem is when i run tf2 the screen seems to scramble at the menu but after a while it goes away. Performance is terrible in game though and crashes have happened. im running ubuntu 11.04 and the beta of wine installed via software center. Everything else runs great if not better on ubuntu and i would really like to continue to use it over win7.

I've written an article on my site which lays out steps for installing Wine and running it under its own, separate user account, so that Windows applications cannot access personal files (particularly those in your home directory).[URL}..i'm hoping that there are people on this forum who know Ubuntu inside-out, as I'd like to know how effective the described method is at trapping Windows applications so that they cannot read or write personal files or directories.
The way I understand it, once the process is running under user account wine, it's stuck with the access privileges of user wine. But are there ways in which a rogue application could break out of this prison and gain access to whatever it wishes? I'm guessing that such behaviour would mean someone customising Windows software to recognise Linux, and that such a thing is very unlikely, but I'm still interested to hear what gurus of the Ubuntu internals think of this method.
