Ubuntu :: Getting Around The Executable Bit - Wine And Windows 95?

I have a copy of "Riven" for Windows 95 still laying around, and I decided to see if I could run it in WINE just for the hell of it. I got the following error when I tried to run the "Setup.exe" file (or any other executable on the CD-ROM, for that matter) using WINE:

I recently got the information that Windows software do not run in Linux as such. In order to run these software (Running the software also includes installing the software by running the set-up executable file) I need to install 'wine' on my system and then run the set-up files from within this 'wine'. I therefore wish to install 'wine' on my system in order to run the corresponding Windows set-up files (which are executable files). I am running Linux Mint version 10 on my system.
I've installed wine several times in ubuntu 11.04 but after the installation when i click on the wine icon it gives an warning message "The file 'wine' is not marked as executable. I've recently been trying to restore a Debian installation back to it's previous state after a serious operation system crash. Efforts are largely going well however I've run into problems since reinstalling Wine. Previously I could execute a Windows executable by simply entering ./executable.exe in the bash shell but this no longer seems to work as now I have to include the "wine" command in front of the executable. how to configure Debian to automatically use Wine to execute using the ./executable.exe format?
How can I uninstall / purge wine and any wine installed windows programs?I've tried deleting .wine (hidden folder)but in /usr/bin/ there are a number of wine related files.And wine sub menu still appears in Applications menu
I don't know if it's just my system, but after applying the latest Wine update, the mouse cursor in Wine windows is now purple/magenta/pink, whatever. Not a big problem, just annoying. I've looked through the various config files in ~home and /usr/share/wine, and can't find any parameter that might even remotely address this.
This looks like an issue of 10.10, in 10.04 I execute my windows aplications with wine without a problem, now I cant, see the screenshot, I need a solution, how I disable that security issue?, or how can I activate the executable bit, because it doesnt allow me to change anything of my windows files because this security issue, please help needed, I need that aplications running.
I am using wine softwear to install source insight executable file.But the problem occurs after installing source insight with wine later one message appeard on to the screen with close button. If i was click on that close button total set up has gone.I do not know what is going to be happend there.
I need to instal JDownloader, I downloaded as a linux version and this is the command line output (Archive Manager):

I am running into a snag on .exe files in Lucid. I have Wine installed, but I can not open the file as it is blocked from executing with a window popping up telling me that this file was blocked due to security reasons. I go into the files properties and try to change the permission but that does not help. Is there a way to get around this? Possibly in the terminal as root?
I have found that when a shell script having executable permission(+x) is copied to Windows from Linux machine,loses its executable permission when again copied back to Linux from Windows machine
I use Ubuntu 9.04 exclusively on my own machines, but I have a couple of flash drives that got infected by some corrupt windows executable (*.exe) files, probably by somebody's trojan (they are Cruzer 4GB so came with installed fancy programs that I dont need but didnt remove and Windows keeps installing unwanted ini files and other trash every time I use them in somebody elses machine or in an internet cafe). I deleted quite a few files, but some are stubborn. $ sudo chmod +w-X doesnt seem to work. How do I unprotect and remove them? The filesystem is vFAT.
I suspect the files were created by some kind of a trojan as my work requires my flash to be pretty promiscuous. When I 've backed up all the good files I need, I'd be happy to reformat the flash drives as straight vanilla data storage and retrieval, provided I can still use them on a variety of machines running MS windows as well as on my Linux machines. Any guidance on reformatting?
I hope this post stands in the right section.I have a commandline i need to enter in terminal when i want to run a program. i tought lets put that piece of command in an .sh file and just click the file to run the program (then i dont need to open terminal first an give in the command) however the .sh file does not open the program. so i propably need to make a executable (application/x-executable).
On my Laptop is an 80 GB HD. I installed Windows XP first (at this point it worked perfectly) then installed on the same HD, but on other partitions Archlinux.
The whole thing looks like this now:
/dev/sda1 <--- Windows xp /dev/sda2 <--- arch linux (/, etc, etc^^) /dev/sda3 <--- homes /dev/sda4 <--- boot partition (grub)
(I got no SWAP partition, I got 4gb RAM (well can only use 3, since my system doesn't support 64bit), and my friend told me there's no absolute need for a a swap :>)
Arch Linux is booting perfectly (and very fast), but Windows XP doesn't want to boot anymore :> (Just if it's from any importance: In the partition program I took the "bootable" flag away from my XP Partition and set it to sda4 - I thought I need to do that, but now I'm not so sure anymore :P )
My entry in the file /boot/grub/menu.lst looks like this (I also tried various others)
title Windows root (hd0,1) makeactive chainloader +1
When I boot and choose the Windows XP in the GRUB boot menu, the following message appears:
error 13: invalid or unsupported executable format
When I set root(hd0,1) to root(hd0,0) (what seemed the most logical to me) and boot again selecting the windows xp, then the GRUB cosole appears.
So what did I do wrong - or better said: what should I do now?
i have just discoverd i can't enter my windows 7 via grub boot menu i get error 13 Invalid or unsupported executable format what can i do? # This entry automatically added by the Debian installer for a non-linux OS # on /dev/sdb1
I have NDISWRAPPER installed on my laptop, but when I try to install the download file which is a Windows Xp dos executable file of 8mbs I have tried every thing but without success I can see my Iomega 250 Zip drive when I go into system>administration>disk utilities and acess properties but cannot make it run,
I opened KPackageKit in my new Fedora system. I want to get wine. The description says "A Windows 16/32/64 bit emulator". But wine stands for Wine Is Not an Emulator.
I just installed wine on my netbook. I have tried every single poker websites software and none works. I think I must be doing something wrong and that I don't know how to use wine. How do you use windows software on wine. I am using the netbook version of linux and wine. What I did was cut and paste the executable windows file into the wine windows c: drive and tried to execute it from with within the wine windows c: drive. It comes up with a error
when I tried to install wine I got "Missing Dependency: wine-gecko is needed by package wine"so I looked for wine-gecko and download it but also when I tried to install it I got "Missing Dependency: wine-gecko is needed by package wine"it seems that I am in loop each package need the other what to do please?
I do have a dual boot system vista and ubuntu but thought it would be nice if I didn't have to switch back and forth for some things. Since I all ready have windows installed with all the required files, directory, and registry is their any way ubuntu could pick those up for running windows programs. Instead of emulating them in wine. In theory I could install my programs under windows and run them under ubuntu if ubuntu recognized my windows partition as c drive instead of OS.
I need to add some dll's to .wine/drive_c/windows/system(32) but I can't find the folder anywhere, I know it probably hidden and I have checked while showing hidden folders but I can't find it.

Have installed Wine - version 1.2.3-Oubuntu1-ppa2-maverick1(wine1.2) from the Ubuntu softwear center . Downloaded windows executable PAF5EnglishSetup.exe which is a Genealogy softwear program from a trusted source (familysearch.org) .
However , when i attempt to open with Wine Windows Program Loader i get the pop up window saying the file is not marked as executable then reference to "executable bit" . I then see the following:

I am a newbie to linux, my OS of choice is windows xp, my computers will not run windows 7 so as an alternative I am seriously thinking of changing to ubuntu after the windows support for xp finishes. with this in mind I have installed ubuntu 10.10 as a second OS on my pc. I like the speed, looks and ease of use of the OS. the only draw back is that I have a lot of windows applications that I run and sometimes beta test for a large british software company, I saw that a windows emulator was available (wine), downloaded, checked the documentation and the database, only to find the only software on the database was games. I have tried several applications (not games) only to get the error message "the file is not marked as executable". is there something I am missing or are they not supported by wine? and could all applications be supported in a future release?
