Why do some apps in ubuntu update with the update manager and others don't? Like when I installed chrome browser, it updates with the update manager. But a program like wine does not, until I add the ppa for it. What makes it so some auto update and some don't?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've got an annoying problem that 'man' and some other commands do not auto-complete (via TAB). e.g. typing: man rsyn (TAB, TAB, TAB, etc) will not auto-complete to 'man rsync' however, if i 'sudo -s' & then try the above, 'man' auto-completes everytime. I want to write something that will run apps in succession.For example, you'd click on the app icon,and it would start up one application, have questions alert the user to add a file to do something in that program, run that program & finish. Then open up another program to take that file and prompt the user to do something else with it, and so on.Basically I have a friend who needs an auto, completely easy interface to accomplish certain tasks that require multiple application steps to perform.

I am having a problem that I cant update or install apps. I am using Natty under ubuntu classic and have tried these two posted fixes but they wont work

these didnt work and dont know where to start to look in order to fix this myself this is what I get when I run package manager and apt-get update.

I did an automatic update and rebooted this morning and I now have a bit of a nightmare situation where I can't open the majority of applications, including the terminal. When I rebooted, my desktop loaded as normal, but then when I try to open the terminal (from Applications -> Accessories or from my quick launch panel), nothing happens other than the quick launch panel disappears for a second then reappears. This is the case for most other apps, but not for Chrome (obviously).
EDIT: Used Alt+F2 to open the terminal, ran safe upgrade and then rebooted, but still having the same issue. As Ubuntu was booting, there was a "Broken pipe" message, which didn't stop the boot process but is still a bit worrying. I've run a file system check but this hasn't resolved the problem either.
No time at the moment to quantify (can do later), but after months of reasonably stable audio work under kernel 26.32-24, I finally updated to 25 and jack apps are crashing left and right.

Well, I had a feeling my HDD was failing but it finally bit the dust on me, and the laptop never booted up properly after the update... I then put together a new laptop with a new drive, I can connect my old drive via USB to the new Lappy, and pull any essential data over to the new system, my question is. How do I import the list of apps I used to run into the new lappy, to have Aptitude or apt pull down and reload everything I "was" using? I figure there is a simple way, just not sure how to do it from a non-running distro via usb connection..
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy computer is a dual boot between windows xp and fedora 12. I am using grub and my first boot selection default was windows. My computer has the following specs:
-AMD athlon xp 2400+ at stock speed 2.0Ghz
-640mb of ram, 2x256mb, 1x128mb, all 266mhz speed
-250gb SATA harddrive, seagate
-Nvidia GeForce 4mx AGP video card
-ASUS A7V600 rev. 1.00 motherboard
I booted up fedora 12 today(12/17/2009) and did a fedora software update (task bar->system->administration->software update). It said it found 94 new updates release on (12/16/09), so click update, and the computer did its updates and reboot. Now my grub boot loader is messed up (boot default was windows, now its not) and random apps crash, like gedit, so I can't edit my grub settings to boot to windows and linux is now useless because apps keep crashing. As of right now I am using another computer to post this. I know one of the updates was a Fedora 12 kernel update. And the new updated fedora 12 "automatic bug reporting tool" does not work any more, after the update.
Some ideas I have, but I have no idea how to do them:
-uninstall last updates
-repairand/or restore bad files
This is important because I need to use some of the apps/programs for work.
Since updating a few days ago I cannot start dolphin, digikam and a lot of other KDE apps any more. The error message from Dolphin is

I am using lucid 64bit ubuntu and it seems my auto update function does not work. Since install (on day of release, a clean fresh install) I did not have 1 update, when I check updates manually there are updates.
If I look in /var/lib/apt/periodic there are 2 files on root and 0kb in size:

I have my system set to auto update without asking me: So why does it never do this? All I ever see is that icon pop up in my tray. I still have to manually update ALL THE TIME

I'd always assumed that the openSUSE update (applet) would notify me and update any apps installed from any of the configured repositories.This week I found two applications were not detected and updated, one from the Pacman repository where an update was available for more than 2 weeks and another from the Contrib repository where an update was available for an unknown amount of time.I manually detected and updated both using zypper without any special repository configuration.The SUSE updater has been running regularly installing critical and recommended patches regularly without issue.Am considering
- Maybe somewhere there is a config specifying repositories and/or apps? I can't seem to find something that's applicable.
- Maybe I misunderstood that the SUSE updater isn't supposed to update anything from non-OSS repositories?
But I think the problem is not with that.I suspect the DNS server .. I just run the Yum install to update my Centos 5, but system error information comes out to require the ntfsprogs = 1.13.1-1 file.
I attached it below. I download the ntfsprogs-1.13.1-1.i386.rpm form website, then installed it.
However, the error information is still there, I check the rpm has been installed in my computer.
I've noticed that FireFox is still at 3.0.11 on my Fedora 10 install despite multiple auto-updates. Will this not update FireFox to 3.5 auto-magically, or do I need to do it manually myself?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI logged on my ibm600e with SUSE 11.1 + on Thanksgiving and auto update started and is still running today 12/02/2009. Pentium cpu is at 77 to 97% 93% memory usage plus some swap usage. Ethernet and wireless are activeily working
also separately the CD ROM is not detecting/detected except by the hardware report I sent in. My external Zip100 Is visible. as is the plug in floppy drive

View 4 Replies View RelatedMPlayer was working just fine last night, but today I'm having problems which may be due to me performing a system update. I noticed that MPlayer was no longer listed in my Applications menu and I no longer had the option of opening videos with it. However, I now had Gnome MPlayer which must have been installed with the update because I never installed it. Whilst going through Synaptic, I found that the MPlayer GUI had been removed, so I re-installed it. However nothing happened when I attempted to open videos with it.
When I tried to use it through the terminal I got the error message:
mplayer: relocation error: mplayer: symbol codec_wav_tags, version LIBAVFORMAT_52 not defined in file libavformat.so.52 with link time reference
I found a bug report on this very problem here [URL]. The conclusion was that the person filing the bug report was using a version of ffmpeg not found in Debian and that he'd need a version of MPlayer built with his version of ffmpeg libs. I'm assuming that this is also the case with me, however I'm not sure how to go about finding a build or simply building a version of MPlayer with whatever version of ffmpeg that I'm using. For reference, I'm using Squeeze.
I'm using fedora 13, and it's been a while that yum auto-update doesn't pop up.Some time ago, when updates were available, a notification popped up asking for update (and I love this feature because I didn't have to check manually).Under System>Preferences>Software Update i've Daily check for updates and weekly check for major updates, with no automatic installs.And doing System>Administration>Software updates, it load and updates correctly, just it's no longer automatically checked.

I'm using Maverick Meerkat, 10.10, 64bit. I'm a pretty basic user but am trying my best to learn.
My background: I have a laptop on which I installed Win7 Ulimate on one partition. After installing Win7 I then installed Ubuntu on a separate partition. GRUB2 found both Win7 and Ubuntu perfectly. I could choose to boot into either one and the ability for GRUB2 to "remember" which OS I booted into last worked properly. I then did a kernel update a couple days ago via Ubuntu's Update Manager. After that, GRUB2 could no longer see Win7. I added a custom boot entry in /etc/grub.d/ so that Win7 would show up in GRUB2.
However once Win7 did show up in GRUB2 I kept having a problem with the Windows bootloader being missing. I used the Win7 Recovery DVD to get into Windows and then installed EasyBCD for Win in which I was able to create a Win7 boot entry and get the Win7 bootloader back. I set EasyBCD to skip the bootmenu so my current configuration now is that on bootup I see GRUB2, which shows Maverick Meerkat & Win7. If I select Win7 then Win7 loads via EasyBCD and it works fine.
The problem though is that GRUB2 does not auto-detect Win7 AND it no longer remembers the last OS that I booted into. I would rather not use EasyBCD if I can help it and would like to just use GRUB2 for everything.
My question is this: How can I get GRUB2 back to controlling Ubuntu & Win7 properly without the need for anything else in between. I have asked in the Freenode Ubuntu channel but haven't received any help besides "sudo update-grub" which I have done and it hasn't helped.
Firefox auto update keeps failing so...I need help locating the original installation location.
I tried downloading the update and using archive manager to open rather than save, but still it wanted to save. Now I can't find the location it selected.
I want to locate the downloaded saved and delete the new files, to conserve space.
And I need to learn how to force an Automatic update.
I found a folder named firefox and another firefox 3.0 System will not let me delete / move to trash.
I want to update to latest version. Don't want to remove the original and lose all my bookmarks

View 2 Replies View RelatedI updated my fc12 x86_64 server today, and one of the updated included kernel 2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.x86_64 from the previous one of kernel-2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64.When I boot with that kernel, it stops when my logical volumes that are built on a raid 5 array (linux software raid built using mdadm) are not there.I can start them afterward with mdadm --auto-detect which seemingly loads the appropriate modules and starts the array, but I have never had to do this before.
Reading the mdadm man page, it mentions that this is generally done by the initrd. So, I am guessing the initrd that came with the new kernel is missing something.
the normal auto updater ran and installed a new kernel for security vulnerability and it was a .pae version. So after restart I now have 4 options on the boot screen, which includes the normal "SUSE" and a 'SUSE pae" version. defaulted to the new pae version and booted up. I got the video definition not found and had to enter a value manually. The system comes up but not into x system. It gives me a login prompt and startx yields a "terminal not found." Ran SaX2 and startx now works. Unfortunately my KDE desktop is messed up now. There are none of the normal "taskbar" at boot up started processes there. So what should I have done? how do I get my system back to normal and roll out the new kernel and all these changes?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently broke down in the face of morbid curiosity and clicked that little version update button. it seems to run flawlessly (after i uninstalled the pesky touchpad) but it takes a long time to boot up now. at least a full minute. is this normal?
I will add also that it said my version of grub had been modified (which i dont remember doing, but may have) so i told it to leave the current one in place.
