Ubuntu Installation :: After Update, Windows 7 No Longer Auto-Detected By GRUB2?

I'm using Maverick Meerkat, 10.10, 64bit. I'm a pretty basic user but am trying my best to learn.
My background: I have a laptop on which I installed Win7 Ulimate on one partition. After installing Win7 I then installed Ubuntu on a separate partition. GRUB2 found both Win7 and Ubuntu perfectly. I could choose to boot into either one and the ability for GRUB2 to "remember" which OS I booted into last worked properly. I then did a kernel update a couple days ago via Ubuntu's Update Manager. After that, GRUB2 could no longer see Win7. I added a custom boot entry in /etc/grub.d/ so that Win7 would show up in GRUB2.
However once Win7 did show up in GRUB2 I kept having a problem with the Windows bootloader being missing. I used the Win7 Recovery DVD to get into Windows and then installed EasyBCD for Win in which I was able to create a Win7 boot entry and get the Win7 bootloader back. I set EasyBCD to skip the bootmenu so my current configuration now is that on bootup I see GRUB2, which shows Maverick Meerkat & Win7. If I select Win7 then Win7 loads via EasyBCD and it works fine.
The problem though is that GRUB2 does not auto-detect Win7 AND it no longer remembers the last OS that I booted into. I would rather not use EasyBCD if I can help it and would like to just use GRUB2 for everything.
My question is this: How can I get GRUB2 back to controlling Ubuntu & Win7 properly without the need for anything else in between. I have asked in the Freenode Ubuntu channel but haven't received any help besides "sudo update-grub" which I have done and it hasn't helped.

I was using tripleboot system in one hard drive. That included Windows 7,Ubuntu 10.10 and Ubuntu 11.04. And yesterday I decided to added openSUSE 11.3 at another partition. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 grub2 as bootloader.
At first there was no problem. All OS detected well, but after opeSUSE online updates last night my openSUSE partition won't boot. First, at boot I chose openSUSE and it said "Boot kernel first" and nothing happens. And then I boot to ubuntu and ran update-grub then I saw grub no longer detected openSUSE partition.

i am dual booting windows 7 and ubuntu 10.4 lucid, i just reinstalled the Grub2 after my windows erased it, and now it boots into grub2 but i can only boot into my windows7 loader, ubuntu is not even listed as an option for me to boot into its just a bow with the win7 loader. How can i get the grub2 to load ubuntu back again? i followed the guide on this site to reinstall the Grub2 and set up the dual boot. so after my upgrade to 10.04 I'm experiencing a puzzling problem with Grub2. It can load everything fine except for XP. I have XP on a separate partition, it is detecting fine and the grub.cfg file is created withou a problem when I the appropriate commands to update and upgrade grub. What happens is that I select Windows XP from the list and it goes to a black screen where a cursor in the top left corner blinks 3-5 times and then immediately kicks me back to the Grub menu. I can do this forever but the grub menu just gets reloaded every time. Any ideas?

I have installed Windows 98 and Debian together before. This time however I started to run into trouble from the start. There was a Win XP and Debian installation left-over, but I had made considerable changes to the hardware, so I decided to format and create new partitions (Parted). The Wind 98 installer didn't like that, and eventually, I cleared the disk with Parted and used Fdisk. When I installed Debian, it couldn't find my Win 98 installation, but I thought it would be easier to add it to Grub with a working Linux, than installing Grub via Win 98/DOS. Debian starts up fine. Windows partition visible, and I believe correct. I could use Win 98 before I installed LinuxInformation I've found so far:I think I need to add this (somewhere?):

for some reason, ubuntu cant see it anymore. so how to fix? windows still prints to this printer on the network. I deleted the printer in ubuntu and tried to redetect and now it says no printer at that address.
before I deleted it, I recall it saying something about the backend had failed?

After having problems with grub2 and windows seven and being forced to reinstall both windows and Lubuntu, I got grub to work. So after some hours of work, everything is working fine. Today, I was trying to use windows again and windows is no longer listed on grub. What can I do to keep it permanently on the list?

i initilally installed ubuntu 9.10 then installed windows 7 ,then i recovered grub2 using livecd as told in the post [URL] i did "sudo update-grub" and got windows 7 menu entry but when i select that entry windows 7 does not load but the grub2 is reloaded again.
i cant boot to windows 7.
Windows 7 have 100 mb partition "System Reserved" the grub2 points to that partition but still windows 7 not loaded.

boot up in to chameleon, lists only Mac OS X as a boot option. Reboot, load Ubuntu 10.4 install cd, get to a terminal, mount /dev/sda3 /mnt grub-install --force --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda3
reboot, let chameleon come up, it sees both Mac OS X & Ubuntu partitions and I can boot to either or happily, now here is the problem... If I select linux and boot in to linux from chameleon, i am brought to the grub menu, where i can select the first choice which is normal ubuntu 10.4 and every thing is great... until I reboot and my linux partition no longer shows up in chameleon, as if tthe act of booting in to grub is changing something / deleting itself from the partition? and I have to do the whole thing over again. SO, not having to even go in to OS X, I'm not sure thats really the concerns more as I'm doing something wrong with grub.

Problems with dual boot, grub2 auto os prober
Drive #1 (sda) Master CS Ubuntu 9.04 grub upgraded to grub2 version 1.96
Drive #2 (sdb) Slave CS Ubuntu 9.10 grub2 version 1.97 /boot is (sdb1) root is (sdb5)
grub2 is installed in /boot (sdb1) and the mbr of (sdb)
I want to be able to boot drive #2 from drive #1 grub menu at boot time. I have run �update-grub and it probes and finds (sdb5) and creates a new grub.cfg called grub.cfg.new in the /boot folder, but the new cfg file does not show (sdb5) or (sdb) it shows all other changes that I made such as splash screens and they are working. How do I get it to recognize drive #2 with Ubuntu 9.10. I can boot each drive independently of one another and I can boot 9.04 with 9.10 if I swap the drives around. And run update-grub The auto probe is working in the Ubuntu 9.10 and may be working partly in the 9.04.
This may or may not be a problem, but is a pain anyway. When I run update-grub in 9.04's grub version 1.96, it does not change anything in the current grub.cfg it does make a new file called grub.cfg.new I have to go into /boot/grub and change grub.cfg to old and change grub.cfg.new to grub.cfg I do not have this problem running the same command in Ubuntu 9.10's grub. It finds changes and os's and automatically updates the current grub.cfg

After installing recommended updates for Ubuntu, Ubuntu would no longer boot from Windows Boot Loader. It looks like an error about some missing NTFS4 files briefly flashes on the screen.

I am having a problem with the latest update of lucid ubuntu. I was on 10.04 for the longest time but decided to update while I was out doing errands. When I got back the logon screen was made up of blue and gray windows on a completely black background and the mouse and keyboard wouldn't work!
I found that if I unplugged and then replugged my mouse that I could get it working, but not all the options work properly. When you try to close a menu it just stays up, but it isn't there at the same time. Also, the shutdown/restart options don't work along with the physical power button on my computer, I have to remove the battery and power cord to shut it down.
I am currently dual booting ubuntu and windows 7 on my gateway NV59 laptop.

After installing windows XP,I did some googling to try to get ubuntu back,but seems messed something up. Right now,every time to boot system,I have to press "e" on first entry in boot menu,then press "e"s to do these two modifications to startup ubuntu corrently:

I recently tried to add a repository by following the directions here: Banshee.fm/download and then select the ubuntu icon at the top. Here is the error I get when I try to run update manager: "Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:'E:Type 'banshee-team/ppa/ubuntu' is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/banshee-team-ppa-natty.list'The command I entered was sudo add-apt-repository ppa:banshee-team/ppa. I have tried to remove all banshee related checks in software sources of the ubuntu software center. Then I just removed the lines all together. I still cannot open update manger. Get the same error. Anyone know of a fix?

Today, I used the Update Manager to do my first post-installation update of Ubuntu 9.10. I have a multi-boot setup (Ubuntu / WinXP), using GRUB2. Before the update, I had 5 options:
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic (recovery mode)
Memory test (memtest86+)
Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)

Is it valid that the -14- has remained in the list? Surely I can only boot -20- now? How should I get rid of this version since it is added by update-grub because of the existence of this file: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic,Should I delete the file or just rename it? Or is there a better way?

I upgraded my main box to Ubuntu 10.04 and everything runs fine, except for a problem with grub: I can't modify the boot menu in any way, I'm stuck with what grub2 thought was the optimal setup at installation time (and it got it wrong, btw). The current boot menu lists:
- my older 9.10 install in sdb2 (one kernel)
- legacy windows XP install on sda1
- my even older 9.04 install in sdb1 (two kernel versions)
- my new install in sdb3, with only one kernel (the one coming with the distro CD)
I tried anything I could think of to modify this menu:
- modify the /etc grub config file then running sudo update-grub
- using a specific app (system manager? don't remember its name)
- upgrading to the latest kernel
- removing and reinstalling grub
to no avail: the menu is still there in the above form, and I have to manually select the 10.04 (old) kernel by hand every time I reboot.

But I think the problem is not with that.I suspect the DNS server .. I recently installed Ubuntu (Karmic Koala) on a Dell Inspiron 1525 which already had Vista installed on it. The installation went just fine and I could boot into either Ubuntu or Vista using the Grub bootloader options. After updating grub through the update manager however, I can no longer boot into Vista and get an error message that says:
"Windows cannot start. A recent upgrade or hardware change may have caused this".
And below that:

Im running Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit and Grub2. When running the update manager, I get the following message while it is configuring grub-pc: The Grub boot loader was previously installed to a disk that is no longer present, or whose normally unique identifier has been changed for some reason. It is important to make sure that the installed Grub stays in sync with other components such as grub.cfg...I change my hardware, including hard disks, frequently so that is likely the cause. My computer still boots but I like to fix this if possible. My disk partitions are:/dev/sda1/boot/dev/sda2/ /dev/sda3/home

using a rather incompatible laptop (Gateway ID49C) with 10.04; by this I mean that I have problems with sound output, brightness control, keypad functionality, occasional freezes, etc.Anyway, the Update Manager popped-up last night, proposing me to download some 400 Mbs of "updates" to installed programs, I presume. I told him to go ahead. After downloading, it proceeded to install the updates, and I left the computer unattended. Hours later, I came back to find the computer hibernating: it woke up to show me update manager freezed on some grub update, to my horror.
I shut it down. Now, whenever I try to boot, I find a very low quality 10.04 text with four white dots that "fill up" as it boots (instead of the fancy logo), then the user selection thing pops-up. No response from keyboard or keypad. Howver, the system is NOT frozen, since the visible clock actually works.I can access GRUB (I have a dual boot) but the recovery mode does not work: it freezes at some point.

When I run update manager, it gives me an error message saying:

* A previous update which didn't complete
* Problems with some of the installed software
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
* Normal changes of a pre-release version of Ubuntu
if I click partial upgrade, it looks like it did during the upgrade, then says:

There are no upgrades available for your system. The upgrade will now be canceled.
if I click close from the first "not all updates can be installed" dialog, it says:

It is impossible to install or remove any software. Please use the package manager "Synaptic" or run "sudo apt-get install -f" in a terminal to fix this issue at first.
running the suggested line gives the following output:

In Synaptic, fixing broken packages does nothing. Mark All Updates > Apply seems to work, but I'd still like to figure out why Update Manager does not?

I tried Ubuntu 10.10 after occasionally using other distros of Linux from time-to-time on friends' machines. After deciding it trumped Windows in almost every way, I decided to install if from a USB stick. The installation appeared to work and I followed the instructions that were given on the Ubuntu download page. After it restarted, it booted back from the USB stick asking again if I wanted to try Ubuntu or install it. I tried to shut down however the only options I get in the power off menu (on the top right) are Suspend and Hibernate. I ended up turning the computer off by holding the power button on my computer (I know this has probably hindered me more than helped but I needed to shut down).
When the power was off, I removed the USB stick and tried turning on the laptop again, however, I no longer get any options to get into my BIOS settings, and NOTHING will boot. I just get a black screen with a blinking white cursor in the top left corner. I can still use Ubuntu by using the ''Try Ubuntu'' option when running from the USB stick but quite obviously this is not ideal. I know I have probably wiped Windows Vista from my system (I had most data backed up a week or so ago, so all the important things I still have, however, if there is any way, I would like it all back). Any way to do a Super-System-Restore to revert back to Windows (if this is even possible).

I presently dual boot with Vista Home Premium and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Since the installation of Ubuntu about 8 months ago, my Grub menu at boot up shows all the updates for Ubuntu 2.6.32-24, -25 and -26. How can I eliminate the first two and only leave the latest update?

I have 2 hard drives, first drive (hd0) is for data, second drive (hd1) is for the OS's. Windows 7 was installed on (hd1) a few months ago and wiped out GRUB. But today, I decided to go back to Ubuntu. I performed a fresh install of 9.10 x64 to (hd2), GRUB2 works and finds Ubuntu (both the newly installed x64, and the previous x86 versions), but it does not see Windows 7. The only goal I have right now, is to make Windows 7 bootable, once again.
My "sudo fdisk -l" (typing manually, so skipping the Blocks)
Device Boot Id System
/dev/sdb1 83 Linux -- where x64 9.10 is
/dev/sdb2 f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/sdb5 83 Linux -- where x86 9.04 is

Things I've tried so far:
1) Automatically finding Windows: sudo update-grub2
2) Reinstalling grub via Live CD (9.10): sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/(where sdb1 - x64 Ubuntu is) /dev/sdb
3) Forgetting Ubuntu altogether and fixing boot using Windows 7 - bootrec.exe /fixmbr; bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd
Now, number 3 is interesting, I found out that where Windows is installed, /dev/sdb8, is a logical partition, and cannot be made active (bootable). This led me to try number 4:
4) Updating /etc/grub.d with custom 40_Win7 file, and making it bootable (the GRUB makeactive, GRUB2 parttool command):

I have windows 7 in RAID 0 and installed Ubuntu 9.10 to another Sata drive. Ubuntu is working fine but if I try to boot windows in the Grub2 loader it goes do error and lets my to restart. I have finish the windows system recovery and setup repair several times and it won't find any problems. I can't get to windows loader.

I have a asus eeepc 1101ha. With Karmic,it would boot into w7 without problems.I installed Lucid on another partition,and after that the w7 grub entry would leave me with a blinking cursor in the left top corner, and hang.
I booted with the w7 dvd, ran bootrec.exe to restore mbr and bootmgr, and the booted into w7 to confirm. It was working. Then I booted with the live dvd, mounted the lucid partition, and installed grub. Now choosing the w7 entry would ask for the boot media, and pressing any key would bring me back to the grub menu. Lucid and karmic boot without problems.
Installing grub from karmic now gave the same error. Running update-grub didn't change anything.As I had to use w7, I booted again from the dvd, and restored again mbr and bootmgr. Booted into w7, used it, then once again to the live cd, to reinstall grub, and once again the w7 entry in grub makes grub ask for the boot media.I've attached my boot info script.Ah, I also played with the bootable flag for the /dev/sda1 partition, but it didn't change anything.

After installing ubuntu 10.4 netbook remix edition to my laptop, I then found that GRUB hadn't installed at all, and it went straight to windows 7 each time. So I rebooted from my live-usb and got into the terminal, and typed

This is automaticly genarated after installed ubuntu 10.10. It shows black screen with a flashing cursor after press enter. Grub 0.97 also does this with:

But the wierd thing is my usb stick can boot windows 7 succesfully with the same configuration. Whats wrong with that? How can do with grub.cfg?
