CentOS 5 :: Yum Auto Update ?

Jun 23, 2011

I just run the Yum install to update my Centos 5, but system error information comes out to require the ntfsprogs = 1.13.1-1 file.

I attached it below. I download the ntfsprogs-1.13.1-1.i386.rpm form website, then installed it.

However, the error information is still there, I check the rpm has been installed in my computer.

CentOS 5 :: CentOS Auto Update Kernel And Reboot System?

Mar 17, 2010

I am an old days RH release user(from 6.x) and just switching back from Debian/Ubuntu to CentOS on some servers, but I can not understand the kernel update strategy currently enabled in CentOS.There are two boxes, with almost identical installation, but recently there was an auto update of kernel on one box. This auto update also seems to issue an auto reboot on the machine, which is unacceptable on server machines.

CentOS 5 :: Software RAID Auto Sensing Auto Rebuild Possible?

Jul 23, 2010

I recently installed a server with Software RAID. I tested by powering it down, unplugging one drive and powering it up. Magically, it worked!I found out later that I have to manually add individual devices like md1 to sda2 md2 to sda4. I got all of them added and rebuilt but my question is: Is there a way to make it so that if I "removed" a drive and put it back, the system will senses the new drive and rebuilds based on some internal table?

Ubuntu :: Auto Update Does Not Work?

Jun 1, 2010

I am using lucid 64bit ubuntu and it seems my auto update function does not work. Since install (on day of release, a clean fresh install) I did not have 1 update, when I check updates manually there are updates.

If I look in /var/lib/apt/periodic there are 2 files on root and 0kb in size:
totaal 8,0K
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4,0K 2010-05-01 11:26 .
drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4,0K 2010-06-01 13:40 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2010-06-01 11:55 update-stamp
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2010-06-01 13:41 update-success-stamp

Is this normal? Is there a fix to get auto update to work?

Fedora :: Raid Not Auto-starting After Kernel Update

Jan 25, 2010

I updated my fc12 x86_64 server today, and one of the updated included kernel 2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.x86_64 from the previous one of kernel-2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64.When I boot with that kernel, it stops when my logical volumes that are built on a raid 5 array (linux software raid built using mdadm) are not there.I can start them afterward with mdadm --auto-detect which seemingly loads the appropriate modules and starts the array, but I have never had to do this before.

Reading the mdadm man page, it mentions that this is generally done by the initrd. So, I am guessing the initrd that came with the new kernel is missing something.

OpenSUSE Install :: New Kernel As Part Of Auto Update?

Jan 20, 2010

the normal auto updater ran and installed a new kernel for security vulnerability and it was a .pae version. So after restart I now have 4 options on the boot screen, which includes the normal "SUSE" and a 'SUSE pae" version. defaulted to the new pae version and booted up. I got the video definition not found and had to enter a value manually. The system comes up but not into x system. It gives me a login prompt and startx yields a "terminal not found." Ran SaX2 and startx now works. Unfortunately my KDE desktop is messed up now. There are none of the normal "taskbar" at boot up started processes there. So what should I have done? how do I get my system back to normal and roll out the new kernel and all these changes?

Ubuntu Installation :: After Update, Windows 7 No Longer Auto-Detected By GRUB2?

Apr 23, 2011

I'm using Maverick Meerkat, 10.10, 64bit. I'm a pretty basic user but am trying my best to learn.

My background: I have a laptop on which I installed Win7 Ulimate on one partition. After installing Win7 I then installed Ubuntu on a separate partition. GRUB2 found both Win7 and Ubuntu perfectly. I could choose to boot into either one and the ability for GRUB2 to "remember" which OS I booted into last worked properly. I then did a kernel update a couple days ago via Ubuntu's Update Manager. After that, GRUB2 could no longer see Win7. I added a custom boot entry in /etc/grub.d/ so that Win7 would show up in GRUB2.

However once Win7 did show up in GRUB2 I kept having a problem with the Windows bootloader being missing. I used the Win7 Recovery DVD to get into Windows and then installed EasyBCD for Win in which I was able to create a Win7 boot entry and get the Win7 bootloader back. I set EasyBCD to skip the bootmenu so my current configuration now is that on bootup I see GRUB2, which shows Maverick Meerkat & Win7. If I select Win7 then Win7 loads via EasyBCD and it works fine.

The problem though is that GRUB2 does not auto-detect Win7 AND it no longer remembers the last OS that I booted into. I would rather not use EasyBCD if I can help it and would like to just use GRUB2 for everything.

My question is this: How can I get GRUB2 back to controlling Ubuntu & Win7 properly without the need for anything else in between. I have asked in the Freenode Ubuntu channel but haven't received any help besides "sudo update-grub" which I have done and it hasn't helped.

Security :: CentOS 5.5 Upgrade - IPTables SSH Auto Blocking

Jun 6, 2011

I have a fiberoptic broadband 20MB synchronous pipe at my home. Over summer at my place of employment its pretty much dead for 3 months so when I'm not busy I play around on my home server. I have my 20mb pipe going directly into my wrt54gl, from there I have a wired connection going to my server (Centos 5.3 recently upgraded to 5.5 through updates.) It serves as a file server(Samba, SSH). My wrt54gl handles natting port 22 to my server. I have my wireless AP setup to hand out leases from .2-.20 and my server has a static of .100. Dyndns.org handles my name resolution via their free account method.

I have a Mac Pro, iMac, Macbook, and a Toshiba Laptop with 64bit 7 running off wireless along with our cell phones, and my XBOX 360 also is wired directly for the gaming speed. I use all of the computers around my home to access the samba shares via unc path for file sharing and or working on projects. I had originally planned to upgrade the wrt54gl with a cisco e3200 or an e3000 but unfortunately I've come to find out dyndns and the e lines of cisco wireless AP's dont work with dyndns and get banned. So I would have to install the daemon on my server and put it as a directly connected server to my WAN link and install a second ethernet card and pass traffic through my server for the rest of my home which I am not going to do.

All of the previous sentence because it would update dyndns with a 192.168.x.x address since its not directly connected. I use a combination of putty.exe and vnc viewer to tunnel 5900 through port 22 to my server. So from anywhere I am at I can access my screen securely and then rdp or vnc to the desktop of my local LAN computers. This allows me to only have port 22 open. I've been looking at my ssh logs and noticed I have been getting hit alot with ssh scans. I want to implement an iptables firewall on my linux machine just for the purpose of further securing port 22. I dont necessarily need natting on the iptables firewall but all I need is ssh in and out, web in, and samba out to local ip's only.

For SSH this is what I want. I want to allow SSH from any IP but if it tries to login more than 3 times in one minute I want to block that IP for a full minute before it can try 3 more attempts. I also would like log to a file but have been having issues getting that to work as well. That way when I review logs and I see that an ip tries three times and then waits a minute and tries three more, etc... I can permanently block that ip or range of ip's by adding it to the iptables script. Here is my current iptables script and it doesnt seem to be working for me. I have played with this and read for almost two weeks and still cannot get it to work correctly.

Code:
#!/bin/bash
# In order to use this iptables firewall script you must have iptables installed. You also must be using a 2.4.x series Kernel, with iptables suppport compiled into it, which is standard for most newer linux distributions.
# If you need help compiling iptables into your kernel, please see our kernel Compile/Upgrade Guide located at [URL]
# Once the script has been edited with all your relevant information (IP's Network Interfaces, etc..) simply make the script executable and run it as root.
# chmod 700 fw_rules.sh
# ./fw_rules.sh .....

# Our final trap. Everything on INPUT goes to the dropwall
# So we don't get silent drops.
$IPT -A INPUT -j dropwall
