Fedora :: Raid Not Auto-starting After Kernel Update
Jan 25, 2010
I updated my fc12 x86_64 server today, and one of the updated included kernel 2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.x86_64 from the previous one of kernel-2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64.When I boot with that kernel, it stops when my logical volumes that are built on a raid 5 array (linux software raid built using mdadm) are not there.I can start them afterward with mdadm --auto-detect which seemingly loads the appropriate modules and starts the array, but I have never had to do this before.
Reading the mdadm man page, it mentions that this is generally done by the initrd. So, I am guessing the initrd that came with the new kernel is missing something.

Could any RAID gurus kindly assist me on the following RAID-5 issue?I have an mdadm-created RAID5 array consisting of 4 discs. One of the discs was dropping out, so I decided to replace it. Somehow, this went terribly wrong and I succeeded in marking two of the drives as faulty, and the re-adding them as spare.
Now the array is (logically) no longer able to start:
mdadm: Not enough devices to start the array.Degraded and can't create RAID ,auto stop RAID [md1]
I was able to examine the disks though:
Code:
root@127.0.0.1:/etc# mdadm --examine /dev/sdb2
/dev/sdb2:
Magic : a92b4efc
Version : 00.90.00
code....
Code:
mdadm --create --assume-clean --level=5 --raid-devices=4 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdc2 /dev/sdd2
As I don't want to ruin the maybe small chance I have left to rescue my data, I would like to hear the input of this wise community.

the normal auto updater ran and installed a new kernel for security vulnerability and it was a .pae version. So after restart I now have 4 options on the boot screen, which includes the normal "SUSE" and a 'SUSE pae" version. defaulted to the new pae version and booted up. I got the video definition not found and had to enter a value manually. The system comes up but not into x system. It gives me a login prompt and startx yields a "terminal not found." Ran SaX2 and startx now works. Unfortunately my KDE desktop is messed up now. There are none of the normal "taskbar" at boot up started processes there. So what should I have done? how do I get my system back to normal and roll out the new kernel and all these changes?

I've installed Debian Squeeze on my server several days ago. During install process installer asked me to provide USB flash drive with firmware aic94xx-seq.fw. All went fine. Today I installed all updates to my system with "U" in aptitude. Aptitude installed kernel update 2.6.32-5 and created initrd accordingly. But now I can't boot up my system because it can't find LVM volumes on harddrive connected to Adaptec RAID card. How can I boot my system now? I have USB with firmware.
I have netboot CD. Unfortunately when I tried to edit boot records in grub I found that there is no my old kernel anymore. The only kernel grub sees is the new vmlinuz kernel and new initrd How take make my server alive?

I recently installed a server with Software RAID. I tested by powering it down, unplugging one drive and powering it up. Magically, it worked!I found out later that I have to manually add individual devices like md1 to sda2 md2 to sda4. I got all of them added and rebuilt but my question is: Is there a way to make it so that if I "removed" a drive and put it back, the system will senses the new drive and rebuilds based on some internal table?

I am an old days RH release user(from 6.x) and just switching back from Debian/Ubuntu to CentOS on some servers, but I can not understand the kernel update strategy currently enabled in CentOS.There are two boxes, with almost identical installation, but recently there was an auto update of kernel on one box. This auto update also seems to issue an auto reboot on the machine, which is unacceptable on server machines.

I've noticed that FireFox is still at 3.0.11 on my Fedora 10 install despite multiple auto-updates. Will this not update FireFox to 3.5 auto-magically, or do I need to do it manually myself?

I'm using fedora 13, and it's been a while that yum auto-update doesn't pop up.Some time ago, when updates were available, a notification popped up asking for update (and I love this feature because I didn't have to check manually).Under System>Preferences>Software Update i've Daily check for updates and weekly check for major updates, with no automatic installs. And doing System>Administration>Software updates, it load and updates correctly, just it's no longer automatically checked.

From F12 to F13. Is there anything I should remove before updating? I have few programs isntalled from source/binary installers in /usr for example. Would it cause problems?
And is there any chance to be able to switch from a 32 bit kernel to 64 bit kernel during the update? The hardware is capable of this.

First post so please excuse my lack of correct terminolgy/understanding/etc. Running Fedora 12 with the following software raid setup...
Mount Device Underlying Partitions
/ /dev/md0 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1
swap /dev/md1 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2
/home /dev/md2 /dev/sda3 /dev/sdb3
Recently updated to kernel 2.5.32.11-99 and upon restart, failed to boot. Get stuck at a recovery prompt asking for root password or Ctrl-D to continue (which reboots system). I worked around this problem by reverting to the previous kernel 2.6.32.9-70. From what I can tell, with the newer kernel there is a problem with device enumeration of software raid volumes.

Received three notices, closed two, entered pass to get encryption code at third, then nothing but a blank, Ubuntu-colour screen. Unable to open Ubuntu. How the heck to I get myself out of this trap?

bluetooth-applet is not auto-starting on one of the 2 users of a system. In the user's environment where auto-start does not work it can be started from a shell without any error and bluetooth otherwise works fine. There is an entry in the start up applications preferences for both users. We are running 9.10.

I have recently created a RAID 5 array under Ubuntu 11.04 and am having some trouble getting it to assemble correctly on system boot. So far after every boot the array assembles correctly but in read-only mode at /dev/md127. Stopping this array and running:
Code:
mdadm --assemble --scan
will correctly mount the array at /dev/md0. My mdadm.conf file:
Code:
DEVICE partitions
ARRAY /dev/md/0 metadata=1.2 name=nagelnas:0 UUID=e4665ceb:15f8e4b6:b186d497:7d365254
detail of the array:
[Code]...
Any idea what I am doing wrong here? Not the biggest deal in the world to assemble the array by hand but still something I want to have happen automatically.

First post here so I'll do my best to provide the information needed.
System:
Dell Poweredge R310
Xeon 3460 2.8Ghz
4x2GB ram
4x 160GB Sata 7.2k (RAID 10)
Ubuntu Server 64bit
If I type as root, "reboot" or "shutdown -r now", nothing happenings - except the apache2 process stops + the usual "System is going down for reboot now". If I type "shutdown -h now" the system goes down.
Upon booting the server back up, MySQL starts correctly, but Apache2 does not - I have to run "service apache2 start", and it starts up fine.
I feel the 2 issues are related. I've reinstalled apache2 completely (configs and all) and this didn't help - I used yum to install/reinstall it.

so my servers 7 hds in raid 5 all was working well until one of them died. The HD that died sort of works it can read like half a file also freezes on the benchmark test in disk utility. Unfortunate when i take it out on boot it says. The drive for /media_kbt is not ready or present press s to skip or m for manual recovery. I hit s and then go to disk utility. But i can't start or add disks to the array.
Here is me trying to do random stuff
Code:
administrator@3dslice-host:~$ sudo mdadm --stop /dev/md0
[sudo] password for administrator:
mdadm: metadata format 00.90 unknown, ignored.
mdadm: stopped /dev/md0
administrator@3dslice-host:~$ sudo mdadm --add /dev/md0 /dev/sda1
mdadm: metadata format 00.90 unknown, ignored.

I've been having troubles with software raid. In particular, the raid array becomes un "assembleable" after reboots. The config is CentOS 5, 4 sata discs (one by 160 containing OS, no raid and 3 2TB disks configured as a RAID 5 array - no spare drive). These drives were configured in anaconda and all seemed to go well (the drive and its lvm partitions worked and it finished rebuilding overnight). A couple of reboots later the drives cannot be assembled anymore and the machine won't boot. The error message says:
mdadm: /dev/md0 assembled from 1 drive and 1 spare - not enough to start the array.
Of course there are 3 drives and no spares in the array as configured. Manually starting the array with mdadm --assemble --scan gives the same message as does assembling the drive by specifying the individual parts. /proc/mdstat does recognize the 3 drives and when I look at the partition tables in fdisk, they show as being software raid. What could be wrong or steps to diagnose? I tried configuring the raid drives manually before going the anaconda route. Also, does anyone know I can edit the /etc/fstab file to disable them so the machine will at least boot. The (Repair filesystem) shell has the / drive mounted r/o.

I've created a soft raid w/ 2x 1TB drives by using Disk Utility. (used for mythtv storage, not system, swap or anything else)
If I start the raid array in the Disk Utility mount and everything works as it should, but on reboot the raid array isn't started so I have to go into Disk Utility, start it, then run the mount.
How can I get it to start automatically?

I have Ubuntu 10.10 (maverick) and I'm using mdadm 3.1.4. I have created a RAID 10 using imsm as the metadata, and this runs successfully if I assemble the RAID from the command line. My question is: How do I get the RAID to auto assemble when I boot the system? I would like to be able to mount the RAID when the system starts up (but the OS is on a separate disk altogether). What I've found out so far is that I must do a Code: update-initramfs -k all -u AFTER I've modified the /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf file. This is what I've got in my configuration file:
[Code]....
BUT what happens is that when I reboot my server, and then do "ls -l /dev/md*" there is no listing at all for any RAID devices. I actually have to run the assemble command on command line and that is when I see listings for RAID devices under /dev. What am I missing?

Ubuntu 10.10 does not auto assemble it on boot up, how do I fix this?
I didn't see a way to do it looking all over the web. But when running

My mdadm.conf is in /etc/mdadm and is as follows code...
The partitions are indeed marked as linux raid autodetect

I do not know why this happens, any ideas to troubleshoot this further? I can not see an error in /var/log/messages
