when i try to update any apps or updagrade 'em it doen't work for exmple if i wan to upgrade my firefox tp the new version look what i have :

Why do some apps in ubuntu update with the update manager and others don't? Like when I installed chrome browser, it updates with the update manager. But a program like wine does not, until I add the ppa for it. What makes it so some auto update and some don't?

these didnt work and dont know where to start to look in order to fix this myself this is what I get when I run package manager and apt-get update.

I did an automatic update and rebooted this morning and I now have a bit of a nightmare situation where I can't open the majority of applications, including the terminal. When I rebooted, my desktop loaded as normal, but then when I try to open the terminal (from Applications -> Accessories or from my quick launch panel), nothing happens other than the quick launch panel disappears for a second then reappears. This is the case for most other apps, but not for Chrome (obviously).
EDIT: Used Alt+F2 to open the terminal, ran safe upgrade and then rebooted, but still having the same issue. As Ubuntu was booting, there was a "Broken pipe" message, which didn't stop the boot process but is still a bit worrying. I've run a file system check but this hasn't resolved the problem either.
No time at the moment to quantify (can do later), but after months of reasonably stable audio work under kernel 26.32-24, I finally updated to 25 and jack apps are crashing left and right.

Well, I had a feeling my HDD was failing but it finally bit the dust on me, and the laptop never booted up properly after the update... I then put together a new laptop with a new drive, I can connect my old drive via USB to the new Lappy, and pull any essential data over to the new system, my question is. How do I import the list of apps I used to run into the new lappy, to have Aptitude or apt pull down and reload everything I "was" using? I figure there is a simple way, just not sure how to do it from a non-running distro via usb connection..
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy computer is a dual boot between windows xp and fedora 12. I am using grub and my first boot selection default was windows. My computer has the following specs:
-AMD athlon xp 2400+ at stock speed 2.0Ghz
-640mb of ram, 2x256mb, 1x128mb, all 266mhz speed
-250gb SATA harddrive, seagate
-Nvidia GeForce 4mx AGP video card
-ASUS A7V600 rev. 1.00 motherboard
I booted up fedora 12 today(12/17/2009) and did a fedora software update (task bar->system->administration->software update). It said it found 94 new updates release on (12/16/09), so click update, and the computer did its updates and reboot. Now my grub boot loader is messed up (boot default was windows, now its not) and random apps crash, like gedit, so I can't edit my grub settings to boot to windows and linux is now useless because apps keep crashing. As of right now I am using another computer to post this. I know one of the updates was a Fedora 12 kernel update. And the new updated fedora 12 "automatic bug reporting tool" does not work any more, after the update.
Some ideas I have, but I have no idea how to do them:
-uninstall last updates
-repairand/or restore bad files
This is important because I need to use some of the apps/programs for work.
Since updating a few days ago I cannot start dolphin, digikam and a lot of other KDE apps any more. The error message from Dolphin is

Was wondering if someone could suggest a reference and possible approach to troubleshooting openSUSE update. I'd always assumed that the openSUSE update (applet) would notify me and update any apps installed from any of the configured repositories.This week I found two applications were not detected and updated, one from the Pacman repository where an update was available for more than 2 weeks and another from the Contrib repository where an update was available for an unknown amount of time.I manually detected and updated both using zypper without any special repository configuration.The SUSE updater has been running regularly installing critical and recommended patches regularly without issue.Am considering
- Maybe somewhere there is a config specifying repositories and/or apps? I can't seem to find something that's applicable.
- Maybe I misunderstood that the SUSE updater isn't supposed to update anything from non-OSS repositories?

MPlayer was working just fine last night, but today I'm having problems which may be due to me performing a system update. I noticed that MPlayer was no longer listed in my Applications menu and I no longer had the option of opening videos with it. However, I now had Gnome MPlayer which must have been installed with the update because I never installed it. Whilst going through Synaptic, I found that the MPlayer GUI had been removed, so I re-installed it. However nothing happened when I attempted to open videos with it.
When I tried to use it through the terminal I got the error message:
mplayer: relocation error: mplayer: symbol codec_wav_tags, version LIBAVFORMAT_52 not defined in file libavformat.so.52 with link time reference
I found a bug report on this very problem here [URL]. The conclusion was that the person filing the bug report was using a version of ffmpeg not found in Debian and that he'd need a version of MPlayer built with his version of ffmpeg libs. I'm assuming that this is also the case with me, however I'm not sure how to go about finding a build or simply building a version of MPlayer with whatever version of ffmpeg that I'm using. For reference, I'm using Squeeze.
Some minimized apps no longer appear in the top menu and by that are no longer accessible.For example firefox with the minimize addon or Jungel Disk backup service.How can I reach apps that minimized them self and are not shown in the top menu?

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, i have tried running the sudo dpkg --configure -a in the terminal but when it asks for the password the keyboard stops working so i cant type anything into the terminal. can anyone help me fix this? My other problem was when i try to run the Add/Remove Applications i can't ever install any of the software because it says its "waiting for other tasks" i'm not sure why its doing this either.
Perhaps I might be a minority demographic here, but I am. Is there a way and how? Ubuntu Software Center doesn't seem to have this option. I come from a long history of being a Windows power user, and I am picking up pretty quickly with this stuff. I find QT ones leave little screen droppings and it bugs me to no end. Some might not, but I like it to be kind of GTK pure. If I wanted a QT app I would have picked Kubuntu with KDE. I admit that it is kind of cool that you can run an app from another desktop and vice versa. I am not trying to start a flame war, nor am I dissing any of the developers that may have made some awesome QT application I may not know about. Is there another software center like thing I can install that at least combines all the QT and GTK ones into separate groups rather than making me fend for myself?

These pull in a large amount of dependencies and need the occasional tweak to get them running smoothly. Although I prefer the gnome desktop would I be any better installing the kde desktop and then running the applications from the gnome menu? Would there be any advantage to this rather than installing them individually into gnome?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI was forced (by an unrelated problem) to reinstall my Kubuntu 10.10 from scratch today, and now I'm having a very annoying problem with the look of GTK apps in KDE.
I know I have to install gtk2-engines-qtcurve to make them blend in, and I know I need to copy some gtkrc files to /root to make it work for apps needing root privileges (e.g. Synaptic).
This has done the job for 80%, but they still don't look the way I they used to in my previous installation (which was Kubuntu 10.10 as well). As you can see in the two attachments, in applications run as a normal user the menu bar is lighter than it should be, and in applications run as root the entire window is this light.
I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my mom's computer. I've also installed a few programs like Emesene and PPStream for her to use. My mom can get in the way of it but when she runs PPStream, she always gets a popup prompting to enter the password. IT can get irritating at times. I know PPStream is safe so I don't want it to have to keep asking me for the password. I installed it from a Deb. Can I stop the program from askign for the password and jsut work?

my problems, on a frsh install of 64 bit ubuntu. Firefox crashes every time i right click my mouse on the firefox browser (i use opera, no bigge but that shouldnt happen). Secound Life repeatedly crashes, regardless of where i get the client from (playdeb repos, omvviewer repos, from the main website). Anything open GL cause odd flickers across my screen. I have re burnt and re installed a few times and always the same thing.

Is it possible to have applications open on one of my other desktops instead of the main? Suppose I wanted to have a certain database-excel type or word document open everytime, or other programs that I need open but not cluttering my main desktop, can I do it?

The install went seamlessly and everything was running along just fine, then suddenly, I'm having the problem that every time I go to launch a new window, it takes 30 - 40 seconds for the window to launch. Once the window is launched, performance seems normal, with one exception. When I go to launch Nautilus from the "Home Folder" menu under "Places", it takes 30 - 40 seconds to launch the window, then another 10 -15 seconds for the folder items to appear. If I click to descend into a folder, it takes 10 - 15 seconds for the folder contents to appear. This stuff was all instantaneous.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just finished my 100% total move from Windows after 2 years of developing on two different systems, one Slackware and one XP. I have come away from Slack because it was just taking too long to maintain the rapid advances in development tools and have now moved onto Ubuntu full time.
The last tool I was using on Windows was Dreamweaver, and not for editing (I had Bluefish for that) but for the HTML validation that worked offline. Thing is, I now can't find anything similar on Ubuntu. I've no idea how to get the W3C Validators working offline and the last two add-ons I tried with Firefox didn't work. Anybody know of any packages with reliable HTML and CSS validation that works offline? An offline link checker would also be useful.
