When I shutdown the PC there is a page of data itemising actions taken, but it is there and gone before I get the chance to read it. Is there any way to preserve this to a txt file to read at the next power up?
View 2 RepliesUpon a fresh installation of Ubuntu Natty, I have noticed only a couple of my nautilus-actions are actually showing up in the context menu. On further review, I noticed Nautilus-actions has changed a lot, and I cannot seem to figure out why most of my actions are not showing up. It seems no matter what I change, they will not show up. Some of the ones I cannot seem to get up are 'Wipe' commands and several of my homemade ones that worked flawlessly in past Ubuntu versions, such as Chown, Make Executable, Renamer, among others. Oddly, two of them work just fine, Search Here and Open Root Nautilus. I am not sure why these work, while the others do not, other than they are not used by selecting item(s)/folders. Also, I noticed there is a change with the parameters, in which now all of them use %F instead of %M. Does anybody know why that is, and/or does it really matter. FYI, I am using the classic version, not Unity as my desktop.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Maverick (server) in a VirtualBox, and the 'Users and Groups' item is missing from the System/Administration menu when logged in with the first account created.
I've tried
- giving root a password and logging in as that - the item still doesn't show
- adding a new menu item for 'user-admin' (which I believe is the name of the underlying application). Gives "Failed to execute child process 'user-admin'(No such file ordirectory)"
Where should user-admin be - maybe I need to add the path?
I have a recent install of squeeze. Beside applications from the squeeze repos, I have installed a few applications from their own deb files / repositories, such as Skype, Google-Chrome (not the chromium in the squeeze repos), Opera and Teamviewer.
All those placed their menu entries in the gnome menu, however periodically, at a new login, the Google-Chrome and Teamviewer menu items are missing. The applications are still there, but they dont show anymore in the menus. Only way to get them back I found so far is to reinstall the application.
In F11, I could configure windows to gain focus when the mouse hovers over them ... it was possible to finetune the response in terms of seconds. I dont find the menu item for this function any more in F12 (System -> Preferences ->?) Which package added that functionality and is there a version for F12? I really miss it
just noticed that the windows are already set to respond that way (by default) only that the title bars don't indicate a change in focus.
I would like to be able to shutdown squid (/etc/init.d/squid stop) via a web URL. Does anybody know if something exists like this, or do I need to write a CGI script or equivalent?FWIW: Yes, I have an 8 year old son that needs some persuasion to GET OFF THE COMPUTER .

I just did a fresh install of 10.04, everything was fine until I ran the update manager then 1 the computer wouldnt shut down, so I used the power buttom to power down and 2 after the updates ,,when my computer booted back up , I have lost both of my panels. all I can do is right click the desktop. this is the second time for this computer the other ones I installed 10.04 on didnt do this to me . I am working on a Dell optiplex gx110.

I have two different ways to print to my HPOfficejet Pro 8500. They look like two different printers to the software.
When I attempt to print a PDF file one of these prints a mirror image; the other cuts approximately 1/2 inch from the top of the page.
OpenOffice.org files appear to print without problems.
I have openSUSE 11.2 and HPLIP 3.9.8
I use Gnome as my default desktop but have KDE3 installed to run KDE software on Gnome. Because Suse-users are mostly KDE users I checked the KDE to see why. I noticed good reasons to stick to Gnome but also noticed I cannot shutdown, restart or suspend from the KDE, there are no buttons on the menu for this, I can only change user and use Gnome to shutdown, restart or suspend. I checked my laptop and noticed the same problem. Both computers have installed suse 11.1 Gnome2.24 and KDE3. (one user) default How can I add a shutdownmenu? I cannot find other users with this problem on the forum.

I hope they weren't removed for some wacky paranoid security reason. My Linux partition is encrypted and I use strong passwords. Any sensitive files or folders that I have are also encrypted.
The switch user doesn't work. Although present, they just either lock the user's screen with a password needed to log back in or log out the user entirely. Linux is, last I heard, a multi-user capable operating system. The switch user button never really worked well at all & I usually avoided using it.
Even XP can handle this sort of challenge. When I was running Fedora 7 with KDE 3.something or other, these functions worked flawlessly. They also worked under Fedora 8.
The logout button appears to work properly. I had a whole bunch of updates to install, resulting in the start menu breaking. The damage is restricted to KDE. The updates have improved my wireless connection, sound quality and speed.
I'm running the newest kernel for Fedora 11, which is what I'm using with KDE 4. I would rather not break KDE entirely or have to use another desktop. I tried fluxbox, but I would like to stick with KDE. What I'm worried about is whether or not KDE will simply continue to deteriorate or break entirely.
I'm using handbrake to encode some dvd's and am trying to use the autoshutdown feature. It does not work.However, handbrake does not seem at fault here. When I check in qdbusviewer, there is indeed no shutdown method in the org.freedesktop.PowerManagement interface. This does not seem normal, although I have the same problem on 2 suse 11.3 boxes.Through this post, I started fiddling with policykit settings, but it doesn't change anything.Does anyone know a solution to this problem? View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a system running OpenSUSE 11.3 using the bare server configuration.I had a partition for my /srv directory. All was fine until earlier today. I shutdown my system (to remove an old floppy drive from it). When I rebooted, /srv is emtpy (no files nor directories). This is somewhat vexing, as I had several sites running from there, as well as a fair amount of data.The appropriate partition (/dev/sda3) appears using fdisk. However, there is no mention of it in /var/log/messages.Does anyone know how to recover an Ext4 partition?

The drive used to have xfs and a partition. Is there any way to rebuild the partition? Or is my 1TB of data gone forever? The drives seem to be fine now... I just want to get it up enough to either pull any data or just to get a file list. Most of the stuff on the drive was from somewhere else.(ie 300GB of NRN data for all of North America.
I've just upgraded from F9 to F10. I can boot okay but I seem to have lost some data in one of my logical volumes. My drive is organised as follows:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed a cluster computer with 10 nodes . The manufacturer is HP . All nodes and the master node have redhat enterprise linux installed in them . When I shutdown the nodes from the master terminal using "shutdown -h now" they get shutdown . But they dont get completely turned off . This issue bothers me when the power supply is given , all nodes boot up simultaneously generating a huge heat .
Thing to note : When we shutdown our PC they get completely turned off . When the power supply is given , a press on the Power On button is required to boot the system. But , why does it not happpen in the case of cluster? Is there any other way of completely turning off the nodes from the master terminal ?
The main thing I want to know is: how to translate my GUI actions into command-line code. I want to know if there is a command that outputs all the commands being made by interaction with my GUI.Say, for example that I type this command and then open a file, the terminal would then print: "gnome-open /{path to file}".(The reason I ask is because I need to know a command to open with a non-default program. I have downloaded MiniCopier, so I want to add a launcher for it to my panel, by figuring out the code to launch it, but the default app to open ".jar" files is archive manager, rather than Java, so "gnome-open" doesn't do the trick. I've even changed the default to Java and still "gnome-open" uses archive manager, while double-clicking will use the new default=java. Weird...)
