Ubuntu :: What Is Xubuntu 11.04 Live Session Password
May 23, 2011
I downloaded xubuntu 11.04 for an IBM Laptop. I wanted to see what it was like but cannot get into live session as the desktop loads then switches to a login splash with 'Other', when clicked I am then taken to Username and Password before I can enter the Live Session. I have tried to click enter leaving it blank.
Tried Ubuntu
Tried Xubuntu
Nothing gets me into a live session.

I want to make a DVD with Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Xubuntu so i can choose one to start a live session when booting from the disc. I'd like to introduce linux to friends and having a few variations might make it easier to transition.

The harddrive of an old laptop of mine recently died. Until I can replace it, I would like to use the xubuntu live-cd. However I would also like to be able to install some additional packages and change some settings, so it would be great if I could make it persistent. I know that it's possible to install to an usb-pendrive, but the problem is that the laptop isn't able to boot from usb-devices.
Is it possible to install xubuntu to usb, but boot the system wiith the live-cd? Or is there another way to use an usb-pendrive to keep some settings/packages?

I try to boot the live CD and try xubuntu without installing, and my computer just hangs at a black screen, cuts off, then goes black and repeats. I also tried just installing with nomodeset enabled and it seemed to install fine, but it did the same thing as it does with the live cd, GRUB wouldn't even load... the computers specs [URL]

I like the xfce desktop environment over the gnome one. So when i chose an emergency plan B in case something happens to windows AND/OR arch, i always try Xubuntu. I have made multiple live disks from multiple computers, and none of the live disks function properly. One went haywire when i tried to update the system(can't remember exactly what went wrong), one would not even actually boot into the live disk, one would not install, and so forth and so on. At first i just though it was something wrong with the iso since the download had been paused and resumed multiple times, but right before i chose arch linux a friend tried using his xubuntu disk and it failed to work either, and i recently tried using another computer and had another failed result.

I installed Xubuntu 10.04 on my Dell laptop earlier, and all went well until I tried to finally login. A dull black screen is presented (I don't know if that's normal; I expected a pleasant splash screen haha). As a windows user, I can only explain it as looking like a command prompt. The first line asks me for my login (which is my first name). I type it in, press enter, and then it asks me for my password. The problem is, no matter what I press, nothing happens after that.

Have problem with HD too full so I have booted from a live CD hoping to copy my document and data files onto an external drive.
Have a problem with a couple directories on my HD. They have a X on them and when I try to copy them I get an error message that I do not have permission to read them. Same thing happens when I go to open the directory to see what files are in there.
I can get the permissions changed in live CD session so I can copy them to the external drive.
No luck doing it in a regular boot to my HD as it will not allow me in due to the HD being full. Even in terminal I can't access the directories in question because the seem not to exist but yet when I do a df command they show up.
P.S. This problem occurred after I updated to ver 10.4

Is possible to burn an ISO to a CD while logged into a Live CD session? The issue is I'm logged in on an old 7.10 Live CD and would like to burn a 10.10 CD to do a reinstall after my hard drive broke. I realize of course the system runs from the 7.10 CD, but if it's possible to keep the system running from memory while burning or something.
There are no disc burning tools in the Applications menu, but wodim appears to be available at least, so if there's a way I would seem to have a tool to do the actual burning anyway.

Is there a text file I can edit that will change my keyboard layout.
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 with a Gnome desktop.
I have tried editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf and this did not work.

I tested 10.10 LIVE CD Gnome version.
I did some disk operations on NTFS and FAT volumes.
It worked well.
When I wanted to shutdown from the right upper corner icon,
I got a black screen saying:
(process:272) GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)
it does not take any keyboard, incl cont+alt+del
may it be a bug?

Yesterday, I did a clean install of Lucid on a T42 thinkpad, with wireless card as identified by lshw below. I did the installation from within a live CD session, with wifi enabled.
Code:
description: Wireless interface
product: PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter
vendor: Intel Corporation
On reboot into the fresh system and update I had the issues that others have seen with network manager not connecting, repeatedly asking for password and so on. Oddly enough, using a Netgear usb wifi dongle worked perfectly, so I thought there might be a driver issue. Updates did not help. The network manager icon would not appear in the notification area at all when attempting to connect to wifi in a cafe locally. Today, I did a fresh re-install from the same CD with the home wifi switched off and no internet connection on the laptop. No issues. Wifi is working perfectly at present. I had to make the home connection available to all users to stop the keyring password request (I use autologin). I'll be trying to connect at local cafes tomorrow (one has no security, one uses an ascii wep password, and a third has a WPA encryption)
Is it possible that the settings from the live session are carried over in some way and interfering with network manager in some way? (This all started because my minimal install (see signature) reached a state where it would not show the network manager icon when attempting to connect to wifis in cafes and colleges, which I need to do. I decided to reinstall to return to a known state. I may try a minimal installation and manual wifi connection from the command line next...)

I am unable to change session type when not requiring passord on login.
How requiring password was changed:
System/Administration/Users and Groups
Clicked on my User
Clicked "Change" next to "Password: Asked on login"
Checked the checkbox for "Don't ask for password on login"
OK'd, everything
Please try this yourself as it might be hard to understand. But the option to change session type (ie: Gnome failsafe instead of reguar Gnome) is only visable along side with the password field.
Is it possible to make the session type setting visable without requiering password on login?

After locking my GUI session, if I type my password incorrectly when I come to unlock it, the system often (not always) seems to hang for a long time, with the text "Checking..." displayed. The length of time can be many minutes. The system is not actually frozen - if I hit CTL+ALT+F6 I can log on to a console session, from which I can see a tty7 process (i.e. the GUI session) using the 'ps' command. Sometimes the only way I can recover is to kill this process, upon which a new GUI session starts up, but this is undesirable as I lose any open applications.

I need to ftp some files nightly from my linux box to an arbituary ftp server not controlled by me.
The ftp server admin has granted me an account for the purpose, but do not wish me to store the plain username or password in any script files for security reasons. How can I do that?
the wrong way would be:
Code:
$ cat my_script
open server_address
user plane_ftp_username plane_ftp_password
put a.txt
[Code].....

I have one of course, but it is asked only if I log out and then log in. In the first boot, everyone can reach the KDE desktop.I am pretty sure it is an easy task.

I was thinking of creating an extremely minimal version of Xubuntu using XFCE. I have a Dell Mini 9, a netbook that uses a wireless-g card requiring bcmwl-kernel-source to work. What I would like to do is use either the alternate CD or mini.iso minimal install file to perform a command line install-style installation of the system. So far, what I am thinking (from reading this [url].... article:
HTML Code:
http:[url].....is to start off with these packages to begin with:
xorg
slim (if possible with 9.10, unsure if it is still available. in short, i want to use a lightweight display manager)
xfce4
xfce4-goodies
xubuntu-default-settings
bcmwl-kernel-source
aptitude
My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why? What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?
