Ubuntu :: Using Disc Creator To Make Debian Live USB?

Jun 12, 2010

If I use Ubuntu's (10.4) Startup Disc Creator app to create Debian (Lenny) start up USB I just get (when using it on a separate machine) a black screen with the text "boot:" If I press Enter I get a pale blue screen but nothing else, some text if I press the TAB key, but it will do nothing. Is this because I use Ubuntu for a Debian OS or is there some other problem? I've noticed that the disc creator in Ubuntu only really likes Ubuntu related OSs. But since it recognised it when I created it I would have thought it'd work!

Ubuntu :: Make The Pc Start On Windows Auto, Without Prompting By Showing The Choose System Screen?

Mar 24, 2011

I recently installed Ubuntu in my PC, without uninstalling windows coz it`s not really mine, its my father`s. When he saw the boot (like a month later, he REALLY uses the PC...) he went crazy and instantly ordered me to "uninstall that thing". Of course i`m not stupid to do that after a month of seeing how Ubuntu is... I want to know if/how can I make the pc start on windows auto, without prompting by showing the choose system screen, and when i open boot menu (i don`t remember, but i think its F-eight) i have both choices, so I can keep Linux without him knowing.

Ubuntu Installation :: Add Add Any Particular Software In A Kubuntu Disc?

Sep 17, 2010

Hardware: Laptop 6735b from HP
Source of problem: ATI graphic driver not installed
Problem:

1. Freeze Operating system when power unplug (in Gnome)

2. Can not start any Operating system with full or just part of KDE (Kubuntu, Linux mint). Thus i have to stuck with pure Gnome like Ubuntu. ==> install Ubuntu ==> install ATI graphic driver ==> install KDE ==> swap to Kubuntu in Ubuntu.

I tried a lot of OS and none will work. I think the only way for me is create a install version of Kubuntu with ATI driver already build in so at least i can start my OS.

Thus could somebody feel free guide me in step by step to build a install disc for Kubuntu. All i need is add up in setup process ATI driver install.

Here is the link for ATI driver from ATI

Ubuntu Installation :: Kubuntu Disc Not Recognized After Reboot

Feb 11, 2010

I can't get Kubuntu to install. I put the disk in the drive and the Kubuntu Menu is displayed. I selected the Demo and Full Installation option. This sent me to another menu that asked if I wanted to reboot now or later. I chose now but instead of rebooting it went back to the Kubuntu menu. I then went to the start menu and selected Restart. When the computer restarted it didn't recognize the Kubuntu disc. I'm running Windows 7 in a 64-bit machine.

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting Multiple Distros From USB - Choose Which One To Boot From?

Oct 31, 2010

With the startup disk creator on Ubuntu (Currently running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS) I realised you could boot Ubuntu from a USB and then install it onto the HDD if you wish to. *Side note* Still amazes me you can run a whole operating system from a USB memory stick drive *End Side note* Now My question is: 'Is it possible to have multiple distros of Linux on a USB memory stick and choose which one you wish to boot from when you boot up the computer?'I was hoping to get a seagate portable HDD ((here) and load quite a few different Linux distros on it to get a broader view of Linux than just Ubuntu (Although Ubuntu does rock ).

Is there simple ways of doing this? I have read around this forum and Google and a suggestion was given to install all of the distros onto the portable HDD/ USB memory stick and then install Ubuntu onto it last as its good for picking up other OSes in its GRUB. (Again if my idea on GRUB and its workings are wrong please point it out - got to keep learning)

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To Natty Fails - Kubuntu - Xubuntu Installed

Apr 29, 2011

I have a problem, because installation of ubuntu 11.04 will fail if I try to.

I have also Kubuntu and Xubuntu installed, which I regret a lot because I cannot uninstall them as well...

The problem is that I have installed a one-time-activation proprietary software so a fresh install is no option.

The error when upgrading is, that "xubuntu-desktop" cannot be marked for upgrade!

I am trying to put GRUB2 on the Ubuntu partition, but it will only let me pick the first two. If I pick the Ubuntu partition in the last dialog bix, it is listed as /dev/sda-1 I also have no idea why is says "-1", because the first two are fine at 1 and 2 respectively.

General :: How To Get Live CD To Start After Booting From Floppy Disk

Nov 18, 2010

I'm an experienced Linux developer who has run into a little problem. I'm using a National Instruments 8170 chassis, among the normal ports, it has a FDD and USB port but this model does not allow booting from a USB CDROM ( I tried a BIOS update, that didn't help either ). I made this cool customized 550MB FC8 LiveCD wtih X, GCC, various apps, etc. and a kernel 2.6.30 & 2.6.18 boot floppy disk with all the needed drivers. The floppy boots to a shell with all the busybox utils, etc. and detects the USB CDROM media and all its files.

My Question is: How do I get the kernel and initrd on the Live CD to start or boot after booting from the Floppy disk ?, I mean, I want to load linux again but this time from the CD after booting linux from floppy, if that makes sense. I'm just using the floppy to boot and recognize the USB CDROM. This can be done with MSDOS and loadlin but loadlin has an issue(it hangs) with the newer kernels (2.6.18 and greater). I searched for the loadlin source code to port it to linux but was unable to find it on the net.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Xubuntu On Usb But Boot From Live-cd?

Feb 20, 2010

The harddrive of an old laptop of mine recently died. Until I can replace it, I would like to use the xubuntu live-cd. However I would also like to be able to install some additional packages and change some settings, so it would be great if I could make it persistent. I know that it's possible to install to an usb-pendrive, but the problem is that the laptop isn't able to boot from usb-devices.

Is it possible to install xubuntu to usb, but boot the system wiith the live-cd? Or is there another way to use an usb-pendrive to keep some settings/packages?

Ubuntu Installation :: Create A Live Disc On The SD Card With Persistence Options?

Jun 18, 2010

I have an Eee PC with a dead Hdd. I brought it back to life by installing Ubuntu 10.10 on a 16GB SD card. It works 100% but is sluggish. Now I am wondering, from the standpoint of reducing SD card access and writes, would it have been better to create a Live Disc on the SD card with persistence options? What I am thinking is that a Live Disc is designed to run out of RAM, and would thus reduce the activity on the SD card. The only thing this netbook will get used for is the internet. It is a netbook, so the performance is limited, but as far as netbooks go, it is top of the line with dual core and discrete nvidia graphics.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Over Old Kubuntu - And Dual-booting XP

Dec 1, 2010

I have one disk which is currently partitioned as follows:

I am looking to install Ubuntu 10.10 from a cd onto this drive, without disturbing the XP installation. I wish to completely overwrite the Kubuntu installation as there is no data there I wish to save.

I got to the advanced partition management part of the installation process on the installation cd, but it was a little too advanced for my liking. I wasn't exactly sure what the implications of everything was, in particular:

Should I reformat the ext3 partition as ext4? I am not sure as to the pros and cons of either. I'm assuming mounting '/' there is fine.

Is 510 MB of swap enough? I have 2GB of RAM and don't expect to use any memory intensive applications, nor use any hibernation functionality, etc.

There is a dropdown list asking me about where to put the bootloader. I already have one which currently prompts me to choose between various Kubuntu kernels or Windows XP. I suspect this is located on "/dev/sda" (ie. the drive, presumably the MBR) as opposed to "/dev/sda1" (the ext3 partition) or "/dev/sda2" (the XP partition) but I am unsure where the current one is. The word 'GRUB' does appear about 380 bytes into my first physical disk however, which seems like the MBR if I'm remembering correctly. What should I choose here?

Is there a need for me to explicitly mount my NTFS drive here, or is that something I can easily do later? (I gather NTFS support is pretty good these days?)

Installation :: Ubuntu Won't Boot From Live CD But Kubuntu Will?

Dec 23, 2010

I'm trying to run Ubuntu on an old laptop, a Gateway M520S-H2. The Kubuntu 10.10 live CD runs fine. Right away the menu comes up allowing you to check the CD, try it, or install it, and so on. But the Ubuntu 10.04 live CD, it shows "Ubuntu" on the screen in a logo-ish way for several minutes, then the "Ubuntu" deteriorates in an unhealthy looking way, then the screen just sits there blank forever.

So then I tried an Ubuntu live DVD. Same things. I checked both the CD and DVD for errors, the DVD with Ubuntu's checker and the CD after I burned it. Also, both disc work on another computer.

Does anyone have any idea why Ubuntu live CD doesn't work on this system while Kubuntu does? Must it be something with the GUI? DO you think I'd have more luck with Ubuntu 10.10? (worth a try I guess...)

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual-booting OpenSUSE And Kubuntu / Set Up Bootloader?

Jun 9, 2011

In addition to my pre-existing installation of openSUSE 11.4 I installed Kubuntu 11.04 to my machine. Surprisingly enough the SUSE Grub was not overwritten and I can still boot SUSE fine. I cannot, however, get Kubuntu to boot; tried to set up a chainloader entry in the SUSE Grub, but that doesnt seem to find valid boot files and errors out stating Invalid or corrupt executable format.

As far as I can see, both openSUSE and Kubuntu see my hard drives in the following order:

sda: 500 GB Samsung on SATA (no OS installed)
sdb: 120 GB WD on IDE Master (Kubuntu installed to 1st partition (sdb1)
sdc: 160 GB Samsung on IDE Slave (openSUSE installed to 1st partition (sdc1)

During installation Kubuntu (alternate CD) installed Grub2 to (hd0,0), which should be what is called sda above.
