I installed 10.04 by desktop image, and it did not let me install grub where I wanted. That is why I did not install grub at all. I got in console by ctrl-alt-F1 after installation is complete. How do you install grub from there?

I recently installed Win7 on my machine and of course, that removed Grub and didn't install the boot manager. I tried to download EasyBCD but it doesn't allow me to select the appropriate partition for Linux so I can't boot into Linux. Is there a way to install Grub from the live CD Without having to completely reinstall Ubuntu??

I'm not certain what precisely means "compatible" here? Is it using the same desktop (K/X)Ubuntu what is installed on the hard drive? Or the same release number (such as, in my case 9.10) or both or just ---well, you get the idea I'm sure.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 with file system EXT4 and dual booting with Vista The problem is I am about to reinstall Vista which will overwrite Grub 2 I know how to restore Grub2 with the Live CD I currently I only have a Live CD of Ubuntu 8.04 which doesnt support EXT4 neither Grub2 I am on a very limited INTERNET so I cant download the Live CD. A solution would be the minimal cd image but the download stall at 96%
View 3 Replies View RelatedI had Kubuntu 9.04 and Windows XP on a Dual Boot. I upgraded using the update manager to 9.10. (I know, I'm a fool.) The Kubuntu install stated freezing hard on startup, just after the GRUB OS selection screen, at a blinking cursor and otherwise blank screen. I'm pretty sure 9.10 will work great from a fresh install, but the live cd freezes after main Kubuntu boot screen and even Windows live cd only shows Windows partition. fixmb, fixboot, bootcfg etc. do NOT replace the grub as desired.
View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently I messed up GRUB boot loader in my laptop installed with Ubuntu which resulted in grub rescue prompt. So I had to boot Ubuntu Live CD to get it fixed. Thought of blogging it, may be useful for some one.
This fix involves two steps. First one is to chroot into Ubuntu installation partition. Second one is to install the grub MBR (Master Boot Record). I am using Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 and Live CD also of same.

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy ubuntu desktop died yesterday. I rebooted my computer in like 1 month and after grub, the screen is all black and it stays there... forever. So I decided to see if the problem persists or not when I completely upgrade my ubuntu to the latest version. So I downloaded the latest ubuntu iso from the site, burned it, and booted from CD and I see several selections to choose from the menu list. The second one was "Install Ubuntu". What I'm worried about is I don't know whether selecting 'Install Ubuntu' will erase all my previous data, or there will be an option to upgrade Ubuntu without erasing all the data. Is it safe to install from the live disk? Will my data be safe? Is there any way to upgrade my Ubuntu on the HD to the latest Ubuntu from a live disk?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an old HP PC with 2 drives: Primary (C = 20GB) and a slave (E = 60GB). I have Windows XP Pro OS (which I want to completely replace with Ubuntu). Ubuntu 10.10 is installed on E as a side-by-side (with XP on C). I am done testing Ubuntu and now want to completely replace the XP OS.Ubuntu is installed on E-drive as a partition. ISSUE: When I log on the PC goes directly to the GRUB menu but I get no option to boot from the Live Disk 10.10 during the boot-up.
HISTORY: I have tried (unsuccessfully) to remove Ubuntu from my E-drive by use of the uninstall function from Windows control panel. I have also tried to remove it using the manage/Disk Management process but the "Format" and "Delete" options are unavailable (grayed out) so cannot use that. I would like to do a complete clean up and fresh install of Ubuntu as my only OS.I have read and tried a number of internet articles / recommendations about opening BIOS and redirecting the start-up to the disk, but I do not get any option or any time during the boot to do that.
QUESTIONS:
1) How can I get my HP PC to boot from (recognize) the Ubuntu Live Disk (CD)?
2) Would a complete removal and clean reinstallation be a better approach?
3) And how can I remove Ubuntu from the partition on E (as I want to dedicate the C-drive exclusively for Ubuntu)?
This is my first post so please be patient. I am unfamiliar with this part of the installation process.
I had 250gb hard disk with dual boot, xp and ubuntu 10.10.Yesterday, i tried to upgarde my ubuntu 10 to 11 from a live cd....b4 doing so, i used a win software EasyBCD to fix the mbr but it didn't work properly..and i ignored it(my biggest mistake)and deleted the ubuntu partion from the windows device manager. It just displays "Booting from Live CD" for few minutes and again displyas the same above error.What should i do now?Its ok if i m not able to recover my data back...i hv sycnd my docs on the internet.

The annoying thing is ive done it before but cant replicate it.
I have ubuntu installed on my usb stick using lili usb creator.
I want to remove live session user (username ubuntu).
Ive created my own account with privileges etc.
Ubuntu is 9.10.
Have problem with HD too full so I have booted from a live CD hoping to copy my document and data files onto an external drive.
Have a problem with a couple directories on my HD. They have a X on them and when I try to copy them I get an error message that I do not have permission to read them. Same thing happens when I go to open the directory to see what files are in there.
I can get the permissions changed in live CD session so I can copy them to the external drive.
No luck doing it in a regular boot to my HD as it will not allow me in due to the HD being full. Even in terminal I can't access the directories in question because the seem not to exist but yet when I do a df command they show up.
P.S. This problem occurred after I updated to ver 10.4
Is possible to burn an ISO to a CD while logged into a Live CD session? The issue is I'm logged in on an old 7.10 Live CD and would like to burn a 10.10 CD to do a reinstall after my hard drive broke. I realize of course the system runs from the 7.10 CD, but if it's possible to keep the system running from memory while burning or something.
There are no disc burning tools in the Applications menu, but wodim appears to be available at least, so if there's a way I would seem to have a tool to do the actual burning anyway.
I downloaded xubuntu 11.04 for an IBM Laptop. I wanted to see what it was like but cannot get into live session as the desktop loads then switches to a login splash with 'Other', when clicked I am then taken to Username and Password before I can enter the Live Session. I have tried to click enter leaving it blank.

View 3 Replies View RelatedYesterday, I did a clean install of Lucid on a T42 thinkpad, with wireless card as identified by lshw below. I did the installation from within a live CD session, with wifi enabled.

On reboot into the fresh system and update I had the issues that others have seen with network manager not connecting, repeatedly asking for password and so on. Oddly enough, using a Netgear usb wifi dongle worked perfectly, so I thought there might be a driver issue. Updates did not help. The network manager icon would not appear in the notification area at all when attempting to connect to wifi in a cafe locally. Today, I did a fresh re-install from the same CD with the home wifi switched off and no internet connection on the laptop. No issues. Wifi is working perfectly at present. I had to make the home connection available to all users to stop the keyring password request (I use autologin). I'll be trying to connect at local cafes tomorrow (one has no security, one uses an ascii wep password, and a third has a WPA encryption)
Is it possible that the settings from the live session are carried over in some way and interfering with network manager in some way? (This all started because my minimal install (see signature) reached a state where it would not show the network manager icon when attempting to connect to wifis in cafes and colleges, which I need to do. I decided to reinstall to return to a known state. I may try a minimal installation and manual wifi connection from the command line next...)
I reinstalled 10.04.(finally) on a single partition mounted as "/". everything went fine until I rebooted, GRUB began loading and then came back with "no modules name found". I found other postings with the same problem,[URL] but this method doesn't work with the Dmraid.

His PC is more than capable of running ubuntu 32 bit BUT I've hit a brick wall I've never come across before. I've burnt a CD image of the 10.04 iso from [URL] on my ubuntu box and for some reason, his PC just won't boot from it. If I select the option to manually select the boot source, all I see is the hardware monitor telling me things like CPU temperature. As for the Live USB - nothing whatsoever. Is it possible that I've managed to corrupt the iso file somehow?
View 3 Replies View RelatedLive CD: I dowloaded the ISO, burned it to CD, booted from this CD. It starts to load and I can see the purple background with the loading icons. Everything seems normal. But instead of ending up with the login screen, it ends up with a screen that says 'Please remove all bootup media and hit ENTER' or something like this. So I hit enter and then it shuts off my computer. That's it.
Live Stick: So I tried another option and created a stick with 'usb-creator.exe' that is on the CD. Then I start from that stick, but all I end up is a line of 'Syslinux bla bla copyright 20xx-2011'. That's it. Then it does nothing anymore. The cursor is blinking, but no prompt or whatsoever and keyboard input doesn't do anything.
Now something weird: When I insert Live CD and Live Stick at the same time and then boot my computer, then it boots into Ubuntu. Obviously it loads the first parts from CD and then the rest from stick. Because when I'm then in Ubuntu and try to format the stick, it says it can't do so, because there's system files from that stick in use.
I installed ubuntu from a usb, it installed ubuntu good, but i had some problems with drivers ATI and I tought that maybe was because of the usb, so I've decided to wait to get my dvd-burner back, because I have an original cd of ubuntu 10.04 and I was going to use it, so I uninstalled ubuntu from windows 7 (... I just deleted the partition for ubuntu) now I'm having problems at the boot because the grub still there, for the moment I don't have dvd-burner and because of that I can't repair windows 7
What I can do maybe: Install ubuntu again from the usb, that should fix the grub giving me the ability of select OS but, there is nothing that I can do in ubuntu to uninstall the grub?
I had windows XP on my c:drive. installed ubuntu 9.10 on a 27 gig unallocated space. ubuntu ran fine. Then i boot to win xp and used a partitioning software to take back some other unallocated space. after it rebooted to complete the partitioning processes grub wouldn't load. I'm trying to restore the grub using a ubuntu 9.10 live cd. I have two partitions in my computer, and i used the partition that contained Vista to install windows 7. Now, i'm trying to restore the grub so that i can also boot ubuntu.
When i do "sudo fdisk -l", the output is:

here it is: I tried installing grub from the Live CD to one of my hard disks (/dev/sdc) on a PCI to ATA adapter. I wanted to be able to choose which OS to boot from when the ATA adapter booted from the hard disk with GRUB on it, but all I get is a GRUB prompt. How do I make a normal GRUB menu on that hard disk with all my OS'es on the menu?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to repair the GRUB 2 Bootloader by using the LIVE Ubuntu Ultimate 2.7 DVD.
Basically I've been unable to boot Linux Ubuntu Ultimate 2.7 ( due to a multi boot set up) & read that it is possible to repair the boot loader by re installing it from the live dvd.
I've already tried to load up the DVD & run the Terminal program - on the command line I type '# grub-restore' & the reply is GRUB not loaded??
I've tried other command lines that are on various other posts but non of them work.
Or are there certain Linux operating system discs that have the function to repair the boot loader from the live dvd.
I decided that I wanted to take Arch for a spin for the next week or so (I've had Ubuntu installed for a while) and so I thought the logical thing to do was to erase my partitions and start over with a new live cd...
Well.. that didn't work. I tried to do it from Disk Utility in OS X which succeeded in deleting most everything... EXCEPT grub is still in the mbr (or whatever it runs from through rEFIt). But all I see when I start up in the non-OS X partition is:

At any rate, no Live CDs work, I can't delete the partitions from OS X (including after booting up from the OS X Install disk).
If I hit F1 I can get the "grub>" prompt. But I can't figure out how to launch a live cd. To my knowlege, there's not a "bios" for rEFIt where I can force it to boot from CD, is there?
