Jan 12, 2010what kind of network between cloud controller and nodes, is required for a proper cloud installation? I mean, Does all machines needs to be in same network, in same lan, or may be in MAN or WAN ? how much should be network throughput? 1Mbit/sec , 10Mbit per sec, or 1Gbit/sec? I ask because I need to know the possibility of running nodes on different locations.

I am behind a firewall in the university dorm and many ports are banned. Well pretty much everything besides 80, 8080, 110, 21, 22 and the most basic ones. So I'd like to get around that.
I have a home server that is connected and reachable on the internet. So if you type in 90.90.90.90:80 into a browser it's reachable.
The task would be to set up a port forwarding or how you call it in a way that if I access my home server from the dorm or anywhere, it would act as a forwarder and forward that packet or connection to the 80.80.80.80 server on a specific port, say 2083 so that I can even access my hosting Co's admin user interface.
To sum it up: I'd like to access the 80.80.80.80 server from the dorm on port 2083 which is blocked by a firewall, but I have a home server that is reachable on non blocked ports. The home server has no ports blocked.

May 23, 2011I downloaded xubuntu 11.04 for an IBM Laptop. I wanted to see what it was like but cannot get into live session as the desktop loads then switches to a login splash with 'Other', when clicked I am then taken to Username and Password before I can enter the Live Session. I have tried to click enter leaving it blank.

Nothing gets me into a live session.

Feb 20, 2010The harddrive of an old laptop of mine recently died. Until I can replace it, I would like to use the xubuntu live-cd. However I would also like to be able to install some additional packages and change some settings, so it would be great if I could make it persistent. I know that it's possible to install to an usb-pendrive, but the problem is that the laptop isn't able to boot from usb-devices.
Is it possible to install xubuntu to usb, but boot the system wiith the live-cd? Or is there another way to use an usb-pendrive to keep some settings/packages?

Jan 11, 2011I like the xfce desktop environment over the gnome one. So when i chose an emergency plan B in case something happens to windows AND/OR arch, i always try Xubuntu. I have made multiple live disks from multiple computers, and none of the live disks function properly. One went haywire when i tried to update the system(can't remember exactly what went wrong), one would not even actually boot into the live disk, one would not install, and so forth and so on. At first i just though it was something wrong with the iso since the download had been paused and resumed multiple times, but right before i chose arch linux a friend tried using his xubuntu disk and it failed to work either, and i recently tried using another computer and had another failed result.

Sep 1, 2011To clarify, I am a windows user who is trying to free himself from the world of Microsoft. With this, there are a lot of programs that I run on my windows machine for tracking and monitoring severe weather that moves in to our area. As it turns out, every program that I run on my windows machine has zero support for linux. I already know about WINE & VM to run these particular programs, but what I am more interested in is seeing if anyone out there (preferably an active storm spotter or chaser) knows of any great programs for Ubuntu that can provide the same functionality and level of detail as say StormLab, InterWARN, or GRlevelX. I use my laptop heavily while out storm spotting for our city and such, so I need programs that are reliable and accurate. For now, I am still stuck using my windows machine when I go out for these storms, but I would really like to try and use Ubuntu on my next rainy day adventure.

My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why?What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

General :: Can't Boot To Xubuntu And Can't Uninstall Xubuntu
Nov 17, 2010i installed Xubuntu on my system having a dual boot with Xubuntu and windows xp but when i select to boot on Xubuntu it freezes and gets a message saying that the file hal.dll in system32 cant be found. Before showing me this message i tryed to uninstall the Xubuntu inside from windows xp because several problems showed up after installing Xubuntu. I can boot on windows xp but i cant boot to xubuntu and cant uninstall xubuntu.

To the best of my understanding, it runs a virtual machine across multiple servers. Allowing the VM to use the RAM, CPU, and HDD resourced on all servers involved.

The first time took weeks as I have around 20GB of pictures and a mediocre internet connection. So I installed Ubuntu 11 on one PC, and as I wanted to repartition things, I took a copy of the Ubuntu One folder, then reinstalled from fresh. When it was done, I copied the Ubuntu One folder back.
