Ubuntu :: Permissions In A Live Session On Boot From CD

Have problem with HD too full so I have booted from a live CD hoping to copy my document and data files onto an external drive.
Have a problem with a couple directories on my HD. They have a X on them and when I try to copy them I get an error message that I do not have permission to read them. Same thing happens when I go to open the directory to see what files are in there.
I can get the permissions changed in live CD session so I can copy them to the external drive.
No luck doing it in a regular boot to my HD as it will not allow me in due to the HD being full. Even in terminal I can't access the directories in question because the seem not to exist but yet when I do a df command they show up.
P.S. This problem occurred after I updated to ver 10.4

I have broken my MBR and can now only enter 9.10 with the ubuntu start up cd.when i boot through he ubuntu live cd.I can see my mounted drive with all my files however i do not have the permissions to open or copy some of my files( music, films, pics) . id like to do this so i can transfer all my files to an external HDD and reformat start all over again.error when trying to open files.You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of.

I'm having problem with XBMC sessions at startup. If a session is started automatically, i have no audio. IF i load gnome, then xbmc inside gnome. i have audio. If i then log out and log in using a xbmc session, i have audio. If i reboot then start xbmc a session (without logging into gnome and running it first), i have no audioWhats the deal? Originally i had problems with permissions, i hadn't selected "use audio devices" in the permissions menu when adding the user. Once i did this, i was able to use audio in gnome, then in xbmc. But never in when starting a sessions in xbmc first.

Before I start, I have searched everywhere I can for help with this, tried everything suggested and still cant do this.
The annoying thing is ive done it before but cant replicate it.
I have ubuntu installed on my usb stick using lili usb creator.
I want to remove live session user (username ubuntu).
Ive created my own account with privileges etc.
Ubuntu is 9.10.

I installed 10.04 by desktop image, and it did not let me install grub where I wanted. That is why I did not install grub at all. I got in console by ctrl-alt-F1 after installation is complete. How do you install grub from there?

Is possible to burn an ISO to a CD while logged into a Live CD session? The issue is I'm logged in on an old 7.10 Live CD and would like to burn a 10.10 CD to do a reinstall after my hard drive broke. I realize of course the system runs from the 7.10 CD, but if it's possible to keep the system running from memory while burning or something.
There are no disc burning tools in the Applications menu, but wodim appears to be available at least, so if there's a way I would seem to have a tool to do the actual burning anyway.

I downloaded xubuntu 11.04 for an IBM Laptop. I wanted to see what it was like but cannot get into live session as the desktop loads then switches to a login splash with 'Other', when clicked I am then taken to Username and Password before I can enter the Live Session. I have tried to click enter leaving it blank.

Nothing gets me into a live session.

I need to change my keyboard layout from Arabic to USA. I cannot login to my machine, however I can access its files via a live session.
Is there a text file I can edit that will change my keyboard layout.
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 with a Gnome desktop.
I have tried editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf and this did not work.

I tested 10.10 LIVE CD Gnome version.
I did some disk operations on NTFS and FAT volumes.
It worked well.
When I wanted to shutdown from the right upper corner icon,
I got a black screen saying:
(process:272) GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)
it does not take any keyboard, incl cont+alt+del
may it be a bug?

Yesterday, I did a clean install of Lucid on a T42 thinkpad, with wireless card as identified by lshw below. I did the installation from within a live CD session, with wifi enabled.

On reboot into the fresh system and update I had the issues that others have seen with network manager not connecting, repeatedly asking for password and so on. Oddly enough, using a Netgear usb wifi dongle worked perfectly, so I thought there might be a driver issue. Updates did not help. The network manager icon would not appear in the notification area at all when attempting to connect to wifi in a cafe locally. Today, I did a fresh re-install from the same CD with the home wifi switched off and no internet connection on the laptop. No issues. Wifi is working perfectly at present. I had to make the home connection available to all users to stop the keyring password request (I use autologin). I'll be trying to connect at local cafes tomorrow (one has no security, one uses an ascii wep password, and a third has a WPA encryption)
Is it possible that the settings from the live session are carried over in some way and interfering with network manager in some way? (This all started because my minimal install (see signature) reached a state where it would not show the network manager icon when attempting to connect to wifis in cafes and colleges, which I need to do. I decided to reinstall to return to a known state. I may try a minimal installation and manual wifi connection from the command line next...)

I'm using Ubuntu 7.04 on a live boot right now so I can move from files from a hard drive on a computer that won't boot. This is my work computer, which contains about three years worth of accounting and inventory information that I absolutely must recover from the drive. The computer runs one SATA drive, and has no ports for additional drives. Otherwise I have two USB drives connected and an IDE connected through a USB adapter. (The SATA drive will not work through the adapter for some reason). I have absolutely no access to another computer with SATA support.
All the drives mount on 7.04, and I can view the files on the SATA drive - which leads me to believe the drive isn't completely dead. So i'm hoping to move the files I need over to one of the USB drives.
However, i'm getting flags when I move files. -Without- installing Linux, is there a way for me to grant myself permissions to move/copy/delete files on my hard drives? Otherwise, is there a simple way (that won't compromise the data on the drive) for me to re-do the partitions the SATA drive so I can install linux?

i have this problem and i may need professional help; it appears smb4k made my /etc/sudoers file writable (according to log), hence, any sudo command will coerce this error:

I own a Lacie Network Space (1) which has recently given up the ghost - I looked into getting data recovered from it and it turns out it would cost around 500quid!! After doing some research I've found out that the drive runs linux - SO, I have bought myself a HDD cradle, Downloaded an Ubuntu Live CD, taken the drive out of the network space and mounted it in Ubuntu via USB. All good up til now, I've managed to get the majority of my data off except one folder - my music folder. It has quite a deep file structure (which maybe the issue) but essentially the permissions for the top folder have a padlock and a small cross - this doesn't allow me to even read the files to copy them off. I've now tried the 'chown' command: sudo chown ubuntu /media/ 999GBfilessystem/ openshare/audio

We have G5 PPC with Mac OS 10.xx (panther?). I need files from it, but we don't have the passwords for the machine, and have no disks with which to recover data or reinstall the OS. So, I used an Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 disk and mounted the drives, but when I try and open the target dir, I get permission problems.

My mac osx hard drive does not boot anymore and I would like to get my important files off before I reformat the hard drive. I have run into a bit of an obstacle -- there seems to be some permissions setting that are barring me from accessing the files I need to. I can see the Machintosh HD and can access some files. How do I change permissions for the entire drive and all it's directories?

i do software (learn keyboard) for blind people. I selected ubuntu and festival and TTS. Please i NEED (mandatory for disabled people) live cd what can be inserted into cdrom and everything is done - automatic boot, settings done, software is on start-up... created own distribution, programed software, done settings, but what kills me is : How i can run AUTOMATIC (without asking, no enter) boot from CD-ROOM. Now CD asking :
- 1) What language want you (here is only czech) - need ENTER (killer for disabled people)

- after 2) I m ok, i can handle it myself, works.

This occurred when I used the synaptic package manager to remove all the kde 3 desktop, to then allow an upgrade to Kubuntu 10.04 version, due to a error message about that kde3. I was able to log into either kde 3 or 4 before this, so what do I type in that text mode run level 3 to fix this issue, and to have my KDE session manager back working ? Or do I now need to install a fresh Kubuntu 10.04 with only KDE 4.?

I've put a script in the "startup application preference". He load fine when i close and open my session, but he didn't load if i reboot or wake up before opening my session.That's the command i've write in the "startup application preference" : sh /home/myname/intuos.sh(The only thing my script do for now are reversing the button on the mouse of my Intuos4)I don't think my script are badly write, since he work manually.

This morning I did a minimal install of Debian to test out xfce and lxde, purely out of curiosity.I tried LXDE first. For various reasons I wasn't entirely pleased, so I removed it and installed xfce4 in a vanilla openbox session. Upon reboot, I was greeted with the CLI. I generated a new xorg.conf file to see if the transition to xfce had altered it, but was greeted with the CLI again after another reboot. I manually started X with 'startx' and noted that the xfce session manager was installed. The xdm session manager, however, was not.Installing xdm fixed the problem, kind of. I am now greeted with an xdm login screen rather than an xfce session login screen. What can I do to have xfce-session be my default login screen?

The problem is when I boot from the lubuntu CD & select Try Lubuntu or Install Lubuntu the computer hangs. Xubuntu 10.04 was aready installed & I could easily boot to it. I thought may be some partition table error is causing that issue & I deleted all the existing partitions with Parted Magic Cd in Console Mode.
NB: When I tried to boot to the Parted Magic graphical session the PC hanged then too.I am totally confused. Cant understand what is going wrong here. I am now left with a broken system.
