I am using OpenSUSE 11.4 on my office desktop computer. I would like to prevent users tinkering my computer, since there are personal and important files. How can I ask a username and password? I have one of course, but it is asked only if I log out and then log in. In the first boot, everyone can reach the KDE desktop.I am pretty sure it is an easy task.
View 3 RepliesI installed lucid lynx about a month ago. with I installed filezilla and I have wordpress running on localhost.
When I do an automatic on wordpress it asks for ftp credentials. I don't my ftp credentials. I was not aware that I had ftp username and password. I am not sure if that means I installed the ftp server without knowing. my root password does not work on this.
I tried searching through wordpress forums but most of them show me how to set the ftp username and password in wp-config file so that it doesn't ask for it every time.
How can I find out the ftp username and password on my computer.
My wifes computor crashed during an update with a message to fill in a report. It would not respond to any key presses. The computor has been running 11.3 since it was realeased without problems other than jerky video. The computor will not boot it asks for the password but does not accept it, Although I can see the Home folder it does not mount. I have tried testdisk but although it sees the partions it cannot acess them.

Other browsers do not do this authomatically, but they do if i type localhost in the adressbar. I'm using ubuntu10.04, and firefox 3.6.11. At the very beginning I thought that there was some problem with TOR, since the problem first appeared one day I turned it on (I had used it before, without having any problem). Now I've completely uninstalled TOR, but the problem is still there.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm having a hard time installing Ubuntu 10.10 (32bits). I load the CD and everything's ok throughout the installing procedure, but when the installation is over and it says it's gonna reboot it doesn't do it!
The screen resembles a terminal with a message like "the computer is going to reboot NOW!" but it could stay like that for hours. The keyboard is locked so I can't reboot by commands, and if I press CTRL+ALT+DEL it just reprints the same message. Therefore I'm forced to turn off my computer manually.
After that, the Ubuntu desktop doesn't load. The screen shows a terminal asking for my username and password to access the computer. No graphics at all.
What command should i add into htaccess if i want to make a certain page protected with username and password?

1) how to make kde not to start/memorize previous session after reboot?
2) in gnome-power-manager i can read Battery Health (mAh, Design Capacity...)-something like that in KDE? In KDE Power manager i have no such readings.
3) is there some cleaning tool as for gnome ubuntu-tweak?
I was trying to install a couple of the sun packages to have and after the install I get the follow error. Xsession: unable to start X session--- no "/home/username/.xsession" file, no "/home/username/.xsession" file, no session managers, no window managers, and no terminal emulators found; aborting. I am now not able to log into the system at all....Can someone tell me what I've done wrong? How can a repair this?

When KDE starts up a new session, it restores the progs that were running at log out last time.I am running skype and that prog is brought back but I suspect that KDE is restarting the "bin" (skype-bin) rather than the startup script (skpe) which contains the necessary "LD_PRELOAD" stuff essential to get the webcam operating OK.I can't find where KDE stores the session info, any ideas?

As per the standard installation and /etc/cron.allow doesn't exist (I tested if it made a difference if it existed with the single line root in it, but there was no effect). I need cron to execute because I want zypper to auto-update my server. On my home openSUSE 11.4 installation the problem doesn't exist. Is it perhaps related to the settings in the yast security center?
I recently installed vsftpd on my server. I noticed that users on the machine can login into vsftpd with their username and password on the machine and go to their root dir "/home/username".Now, I want to give some people a vsftpd username and password so they can upload and download files and folders to their folder, but this folder has to be in the "/var/www/(username)" folder. I don't want them to be able to go to any other folder than their own folder like "/var", "/etc" or "/home" etc. Also I don't want them to be able to login on the machine as a user, through putty for example. They should only be allowed to acces their folder with vsftpd, nothing else.

I'm new to networks and servers, been using Linux on the desktop for a while now but always relied on the company's IT guy for setting up everyting LAN-based.
Now I want to build up my home LAN, and want to do it with Linux. I've managed to set up LAMP and file share servers.
What I am looking for is information on what I need, and how to set up a server for the following tasks:Centralized Username and Password, that when the user logs into any one of the desktops in the LAN, it uses this for authentication
Something that allows this authentication to be utilized in other servers (file access, web access, router logging, etc.). Something to make it easier for continuing permissions from one service to another. e.g. I have IPCop filtering content, and it has provisions for tracking who is making which request if there is authentication going on. (optionally) to run a script for mounting Samba shares or mapped network drives so from one system to the next. For example, in whatever box somebody logs in, it mounts a server share ("smb://Myserver/users/<username>") to a local folder ("my_user_share").
So;user "fred" ="smb://Myserver/users/fred" and user "wilma" = "smb://Myserver/users/wilma" but both would find their respective one mounted under "~/my_user_share". This would be irrespective of which box they are loggin in with. If the server share location changes (new server/servername), I change it on the server so the next time they log in it points to the right place.
I guess it is similar to Window's Active Directory, though I'm not sure what it's called, how to configure it and what it is and is not capable of doing.
I just installed Fedora 11 (KDE) off of the Live boot CD. I made a really simple password when I was installing, but later I decided to make up a much tougher version of it. When I do "start > computer > system settings > about me" and try to type in my password I get the following error:"BAD PASSWORD: is too similar to the old one BAD PASSWORD: is too similar to the old one BAD PASSWORD: is too similar to the old one passwd:Have exhausted maximum number of retries for service"This is weird because it seems like the system thinks I made three attempts, while I only tried once. Does anyone know what is going on? By the way I don't know why it thinks my password is too similar, It only has 3 of the same letters out of 8 Also, this is my home computer, why does fedora restrict me from a similar password? It should just warn me about it but then let me do it.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have installed suse 11.3 on a USB drive and can boot from it successfully. The install was done using my desktop computer. I then booted my netbook using the usb drive, linux loads and runs fine, however when i need to enter the password to make any changes it will not accept it. I can not even access the hard disk in the netbook. I rebooted using the desktop just to check that the password I was using was correct and it worked fine.
USB drive is a 250GB western digital with only linux on it
Desktop is running Windows XP service pack 3, 4GB RAM
Netbook is running Windows 7 Starter 2GB RAM.
I don't know that this post fits here, nor does it fit in "Applications." installing suse doesn't seem to give you the chance to name your computer. Now my computer is called "linux-0qvi" or something strange like that. I want to name my computer. Can I do this now without screwing things up??
Also, during install, there didn't seem to be an opportunity to make a separate root password. My first (and main user) account is now set up with admin rights, so I have to type in my account password every time I do something as root. Can I set a separate dedicated root password without screwing up my system?
Have followed swerdna's guide as in the past and my wife from her win7 computer can see and has read write access to all the shares & can print to the shared printer attached to the Opensuse computer etc. However, when I try to access her Win7 shares from my opensuse computer I am presented with a username / password prompt.
