Having a problem on all of my Ubuntu machines when i goto this address: [URL]... i get a "server not found Firefox cant find the server [URL]... this is only happening on Linux i have a dual boot on an epc with vista and it loads the site. normally i wouldn't even care but my girlfriend will be taking on line classes here and i need to get this to load.

I know where the samba share with all the files for the website points to, but when i put that full path after the slash i get nothing.

View 17 Replies View RelatedThis is really odd - all of a sudden, my firefox says "Firefox can't find the server at www.google.com" , and my pidgin will not connect saying host not found.However, I am typing this on the same computer using Opera. his is absolutely insane. I have no idea what caused it.. command line nslookup works great, and resolves everything.But firefox and pidgin will not resolve anything.

I had no problem installing Ziproxy, as its in the main packages But how to use it? I mean, so far I could find out, to start it, I musst run:ziproxy --daemon ([URL]) My /etc/ziproxy/ziproxy.conf is full of stuff I've found on internet:

But when I run it, and set the Firefox port to:9900 it fails to load any website. The goal is to compress to the maximum the images, and other stuff that uses too much bandwich (like Opera Turbo). I really dont care if a picture is full of pixels, or not. I do not want to use Opera, just to enjoy a fast Internet. I will not install Midori, Iron, Chrome, eLink or Arora. I want to continue with my usual Firefox and opera. The advantage is that in Firefox, I have NoScript, and other several improvements/extensions, which I cant enjoy in Opera.
I think the fault is, to include four different parameters (Address,Port,NextProxy,NextPort) that are probably for the same thing. Also had thought that perhaps there is some way to apply the proxy system-wide, not only in the Firefox settings. Maybe by editing the configuration of Networkmanager?

My webserver accesses a backend mySQL server using CentOS5
The last week, I have been getting a "page Load Error" on my web server whilst others told me they are getting a "broken link" error when they try to access my web site. It has been working fine for the last 12 months until last week.
ADSL, modem and router okay according to service provider (verizon)
I can ping my IP address and my domain name.
# netstat -tap
shows http and https both processes running.
# service httpd restart
no issues
I shut down firewall and tried again, but got the same "page load error".
I'm new to Linux and I recently decided to try out Ubuntu. I used the Wubi installer so it's on Windows (just to see if I liked Ubuntu) and it works fine, but with one exception: the internet (or maybe just Firefox) isn't working. The internet connection worked just fine on XP. On Ubuntu, it says that it was able to connect to the wireless network, but when I try to go to any page on Firefox it just keeps trying to load perpetually and never connects to the site, eventually just showing the "Server not found" page.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop with Redhat 5 installed and a Windows 7 Virtual Machine. The laptop is connected to the internet but I cant access any web pages in firefox - it just comes up with Server Not Found (tried all different sites). I know the internet connection is good as if i go into my windows VM firefox works normal. Ive checked the network settings and tried setting to 'no proxy' and automatically detect but nothing seems to work. Ive uninstalled and reinstalled firefox and still get the same.
Ive tried both wired and wireless but makes no difference. Seems really weird that it works in the Windows VM but not in Redhat which its booting into.
My father has configured his network and the computer has connected to the wired network. The problem is firefox says the server cant be found at the given address. The wired router says its connected to the network and yet firefox doesn't see the router admin page or network.

I do have internet access, can use yum, can ping google.com, and can use google Chrome to access the internet OK. Any thoughts? It is not any big problem, since I can use Chrome, but just wondering what the problem might be with Firefox.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have been using ubuntu netbook 10.10 on my Dell Mini 9 for the past few month without any problem; it connects wirelessly to the internet via a wireless router. Yesterday in the middle of web surfing, suddently firefox cannot see any website outside of my home network (Firefox displays Server not found page). No help when I rebooted a few times and connect to my home network via wireless or even wire cable; it can access files in my network file server (DNS-321) but not the internet. My desktop computer running Windows Vista and ASUS media player has no problem accessing the internet.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've gotten this in the past with other PCs, but have been able to fix it by deleting my connection in Network Manager and recreating it. I'm using DHCP. This is OpenSUSE 11.3 on a HP Mini-110 Netbook.Here's the weird part, before anyone starts sending me to resolv.conf or asking for "lspci" stuff. When I'm in a terminal on this netbook, I can enter "host google.com" and it works. I can enter, "host download.opensuse.org" and it works fine. I get an IP address. If I manually enter the IP address in Firefox, I go to the site. But if I enter "www.google.com" in Firefox, it very quickly responds with, "Firefox can't find the server at google.com.""Browse Offline" isn't checked. (Think about it: if it was, I couldn't enter the IP address and go to a site, anyway.) This is a brand new install of OS 11.3, Firefox 3.6.6. But one other interesting thing: the software updater reported that common "curl" error, saying that IT couldn't resolve the addresses, either.

I can manually ping Stanford ok,
Add/remove software within fed. works ok.
I can type in 192.168.0.1 & get the page for my router
The only thing I did between working & not working was to install
Nvidia Cuda driver for my GTX275
My guess is something in the firewall got tweaked. but I've compared it to 2 working boxes & nothing jumps out at me.
I just installed ubuntu 10.04 on my dell pc and it working very well. I also connect linksys usb wireless card to pc and my pc receives network connection without any problem. When I try to open firefox browser it does say"firefox cant find the server at [URL]... and asking me to check network connection or make sure that firefox is permitted to access the web.

I am able to start the machine from the internet (power plug board with webinterface) but I don't know how to shutdown the server automatically if nobody uses the website anymore. It is a homeserver which should only run if needed.
Unfortunately I don't know much about Linux, apache, php, cgi-scripts, cronjobs and other things that might be useful. But I googled a lot and have now an idea how it could work. It seems complicated to me and so I want to ask you guys what you think about it and if perhaps you could give me a hint.
The idea: A cronjob starts every ten minutes a php script that checks when the index.html of the welcome-page was opened the last time (fileatime()). Lets say it was opened last time at 3pm. Then the php script adds for example 60 minutes to that time (=4pm) and calculates how much time is left to 4pm. This time is saved in the variable $timeleft. Now the php script compares if $timeleft is less then 10 minutes (=600 seconds). If it is, the php script starts a cgi script that will shutdown the server. The cgi script will login as root (I think that can be done with the "expect"-command url and then enter the command "shutdown -h now"
Is all this realizable? Isn't there a better and/or easier way to do?

I have tried with firefox,epiphany,opera with all the same results. I am sure that this is not a problem with my internet connection because i don't have these problems with windows.Also the network manager connection settings are correct
I also tried choosing the old kernel(2.6.32.24) to boot from but no success.The problem is the same as if i am using the 2.6.32.25 kernel. The strange thing is that i can download packages from synaptic with full speed. Last think.I have recently downloaded the recommended updates from the update manager but i don't remember what are the things that where updated.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L305-SP6944C, Pentium Dual Core 2.16, 2GB RAM, 160GB hard drive, DVD-RAM UJ880AS, display 15.6 TFT widescreen, ethernet Realtek RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express, WLAN Realtek RLT8187, Opensuse 11.2 and KDE 4.3.1. Installation was OK and finally the wireless card is working... but I don't have conectivity bacause in the browser (Firefox) appears a message saying "the server can't be found"
I follow the howto write by Swerdna. With ndiswrapper I install the XP driver for RLT8187, KnetworkManager is in charge of connections showing both eth0 and wlan0, the wireless sign of router Dlink DIR-280 is OK, in the dialog box of network connection I put the mac address of the wlan card but I think that is not the problem.
Other thing that I missed is that I don't find boot.ini at any directory to add modprobe ndiswrapper in the boot sequence, in etc/init.d/ appears a "boot" file, is this file that I have to change to modprobe ndiswrapper??
There is a tool appeared in repository called ktune; The purpose is to adjust some sysctl.conf settings to improve server speed on servers with heavy load. What is this tool for if one can achieve the same with the configuration file added to system startup? Or ktune is just such file?
