Is there any way to select which output device a program uses? I notice many Ubuntu programs lack the choice to choose where the sound is outputted, for example Rhythmbox and Exaile.I have 3 sound outputs (Internal, PCI, HDMI) connected and I'd like to for example use the PCI card as default audio device but play music from Rhythmbox through the internal motherboard output.

View 3 Replies View RelatedReboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I got this error after: Reducing my Windows 7 partition by about 100gb. Creating a new partition (100gb) and copying my Ubuntu partition (10gb) to the new partition. After it was copied, and pasted, the original partition was deleted. I now had two partitions a new 100gb Ubuntu partition and a 600gb (or so) Windows 7 partition.
All of this was done using a bootable USB with Ubuntu 10.10 and GParted partition editor. Now when I boot I get the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key." error.
I finally got audio working on my ubuntu 9.10 desktop... now I am having sound issues watching movies from a network share.The sound device continually randomly changes to "dummy output device" and then there is no sound output. The sound icon dissapears on the toolbar. To get it back and audio to start working I have to $sudo alsa force-reloadIt seems to happen everytime there is a network delay, the movie will stop for a second and then when it plays the sound is gone

At the moment I have it playing through Analog Stereo Output. (See attached image)
The sound is mostly flawless and I haven't been having troubles with it.
But, because I play audio through my logitech speakers (2 speakers, 1 subwoofer) I should be able to get digital stereo sound shouldn't I?
From the drop down box of the attached image there are two options for Digital Stereo;
Digital Stereo Duplex IEC958
Digital Stereo IEC958 Output + Analog Stereo Input
None of them work for me. Even if I do a restart, I get no sound from Rhythmbox or Firefox.
I use the pulseaudio sound server and I have the PulseAudio device chooser installed. When I had the Digital Stereo Duplex IEC958 selected I used the Volume Meter playback to see if there was any sound coming through. Both left and right showed activity but nothing came through the speakers.
I use a USB webcam with a built in microphone. It works fine, but every time I plug it in I have to go to sound properties and select it as the input device. There are no other input devices present on my system. Since it's the only one there, is there any way to get it to automatically select when I plug it in? If not, I think that would be good functionality to add. Does anyone know who or what team to contact about that?
View 3 Replies View Relatedi know skype on Linux is crap but i have no choice as i now have only Ubuntu installed on this pc & I NEED SKYPE.so with the new version how do i select a particular sound device.i ask because skype only lets me select a specific sound 'platform' (pulseaudio).i have a motherboard with on-board sound & a USB voip phone (us robotics) and it the usb voip phone i want to use solely for skype
so is there something i can tell pulse audio that i want skype to ONLY use the usb phone or do i have to use the stupid sound preferences to change the system wide device to the usb phone which makes the whole thing a hindrance because i have no idea when someone calls me & when i have to quickly change the settings then turn off music then try to answer the call the person calling has gone!!!i like to have music playing in the background out of my hifi & the error noises come out of the usb phone as well when this is selected & to be honest it makes having a pc setup with multiple devices pointless and a hindrance
I've been trying since ever to install the new ubuntu on my FakeRaid controller and I'm really starting to get frustrated. After restarting, i get the message "reboot and select proper device.." So my first tough was that my grub was not installed properly. So i ran the boot_info_script.sh that I found in the forum and here is my output. It says that the boot loader is not installed and my Raid is screwed up. I went look in the BIOS and everything looks fine. Ive put the result.TXT from the script.

I downloaded the full install of Fedora 10. I burned the DVD and it booted okay. Going through the startup stuff, select language, keyboard, ect and then I choose the dvd as the source of the image. Then I get "no driver found" and gives me the option to choose from a list of drivers or to use a driver disk. I saw something in the forums about someone having the same problem but theirs was a video card issue. On the list of drivers it looks like they are network card drivers. I have no idea what to do. I am using a NVIDIA Geforce FX 5500 if that helps. I also did not verify the iso, though wouldn't it not boot at all if the iso image was broken?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have steam running through wine, and i can play empire:total war with out and issue, but if I want to change a song, open a web browser, type in a chat, or anything that would deselect Empire it freezes. If I have empire in windowed mode I can move freely between programs. My system stays fine when empire freezes, have to end the empire process and reopen it. Not sure if the issue is with wine, my computer, or steam.

I tried to install F12 on my new IDE-HDD. The installation completed without any errors. But, when rebooting my PC I got a dark screen with error message: reboot and select proper boot device.
No BIOS boot up issue, since booting up using other hard disk running windows has no problem at all. I have set the hardisk jumper to master/primary, tried to re-install F12 a couples of time, but didn't make any difference.
I have two BT USB adapters on my fedora9 (2.6.27.19-78.2.30.fc9.x86_64).How i can tell which of them to bind as /dev/rfcomm0 device.It seems that rfcomm.conf doesn't say me too much about.

i wanted to capture the stdout and stdin of a child process within a parent so that any output of child is sent to the parent and any input taken from the parent. code is simple enough and i have followed all code guidlines on the internet (some guidlines do differ also) my select call either hangs if i do not give a tmeout and with a timeout it returns 0 descriptors to be written to or read from:

why select hangs without a timeout ... why can it not detect that the pipe is write ready i.e parent can write to it ... if it does not detect tha read pipe as having data...
I am using a sound card with the C-media CMI8788 chip. This card has both analog and digital outputs, which Linux sees as two different output devices.
The Problem I am having with VLC is that it always changes the output device in its settings to analog. I constantly have to be going into VLC advanced settings and picking Alsa: Digital for the output.
After that the sound outputs fine.
This only happens with VLC. All other programs on my pc output sound perfectly fine. I am using Lucid.
How can I set the default to be the digital output?
I'm trying for the first time to work with sounds and edit them. I'm trying to use Gnome Wave Cleaner and don't know what to do about the error.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using FFADO on JACK in order to use my firewire device (M-Audio Profire 610) and I seem to have the opposite issue as others who have similar problems. Everything starts up fine, and I can record audio into Ardour using my inputs, but I can't get any output from any of my 8 line outs.
I've checked the connections using QjackCtl, and I tried to route audio from another program (Audacious) but I can't seem to pull audio out of the device (or the computer won't send my device audio?).
For some time, I have been trying to install fedora 14 on my pc, as I want a dual boot machine. It has windows xp already installed and running. I used liveusb creator to make a bootable usb. the problem is, when I log in and start the installer, it runs until I get the option "Select storage device". When I select the appropriate option , basic storage device, the installer screen disappears, and nothing more happens. I shall be much obliged if someone can point out the problem. My computer is a Dell optiplex 745 , 2.8 GHz with 512 Mb of RAM.

My friend wrote a python program which generates patterns and writes them to terminal. Everything is fine this far. I've made a bash script to run this program:

What I don't understand is - how do I redirect it's output to ttyS0 so that my device could catch generated data?
I've heard that in Linux every data stream can be redirected anywhere with '>>' in bash script. How do I do that? Can I, dunno, write something like this: python gen.py >> ttyS0 in shell script?
I'm installing FC-686 onto a Dell 6300 server with several drives, one 300+gig and about 5 9gig drives. The install disk loads fine but when I select install to HD it tells me that there is no device to install to. Obviously doesn't see the HDs. I have used the internal program to format the HDs, I think I selected RAID 3. I wanted to use all the HD space as my data is not critical requiring RAID 5. Unless someone convinces me otherwise. I did this also because I wanted to maximize disk space. What else to do with 9 gig drives?

I have updated my Ubuntu to Lucid 10.04 from 9.10.
Although my sound disappeared in 9.10 only, I thought maybe upgrading might help, but there is no change.
I guess everything is installed fine.
But still aplay -l command shows "NO sound cards.. "
Moreover the sound preferences shows no hardware, no input and a dummy stereo output.
I have banged my head a lot trying various things written in forums and all but no success.
One more thing : When I test "osstest" , I get sound in both the earphones , but altogether there is no sound. I am very much confused.
I've got a C program that I've added some 'printf' statements to monitor a couple of variables. When I run this program manually or from a script, the output is displayed on screen. However, I need to change various variables in the 'test.c' file, run 'make clean' and 'make' a few hundred thousand times. I'm using a script to read the variables in and then using sed to do in-place edits of the file. Unfortunately, with this amount of iteration, it is getting rather tired!
Anyway, I've created a script that is working as long I respond to prompts. View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter a lot of messing around and research, I figured out how to actually get my bluetooth headphones to connect and stay connected. Although once I shut them off, remove the device and re-add it using Blueman.
Right now, `pavucontrol` shows "Headphones (unplugged)" and there is no sound coming out of the speakers. But there is no sound coming out of the headphones either. They are set to the fallback. I've opened `alsamixer` and made sure everything was turned up. Still, no sound.
Since `bt-audio` isn't on Jessie, I don't know what I should do. It seems like this may be the missing step but I am unsure.
how do you change the default audio output device if you have multiple sound cards?
