Fedora :: Can't Select A Program From The "System Settings" Dialogue?

Jun 1, 2011

After a new installation with Fedora Core 15 KDE is starting slow. It's now giving me a lot of errors in $HOME/.xsession-errors:

Code:
kwin(5077)/kdeui (KNotification) KNotification::slotReceivedIdError: Error while contacting notify daemon "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken."The message repeats and repeats. Sometimes I start applications and they timeout with similar messages. To be more precise: I can't select a program from the "System settings" dialogue.

Code:
klauncher(5065)/kio (KLauncher): SlavePool: No communication with slave.
Selinux is off. Any ideas?

Ubuntu :: Icon View In File Select Dialogue Box

Apr 23, 2011

Is there any way to make the file selector dialogue box in Ubuntu show icons instead of a list or detail view? I have been trying to convince people to use Ubuntu instead of windows, but this seems to be a deal breaker for most of them. When uploading pictures to the web or facebook it is very difficult to navigate pictues in the file browser window with the little bitty thumbnails beside the file name. If there is no way to do this how would I recommend this idea for Ubuntu and to whom would I submit it?

Fedora :: System Fonts Wrong Until I Select System-Appearance Menu / Resolve This?

May 23, 2010

This is a bit of an odd problem that's been happening to me recently. My home folder is a version of Fedora old, I've been using the same one between Fedora 11 and 12 (which I'm now using).

When booting up, I notice that my system fonts are not the ones I have manually set. They're the ugly version, whatever exact font it is. It's only when I select System->Appearances from the menu that the system seems to detect my seletions to use Liberation fonts in all areas, and then everything instantly switches to the more visually pleasing Liberation fonts. This is a strange bug, I was wondering if anyone has experienced this or can point me in the right direction?

OpenSUSE Install :: Saving System Settings (yast Settings)

Is there a way I can save system settings and have yast revert to a config file in case I ever need to reinstall the system again? I hate having to configure the firewall, runlevels, samba shares, samba workgroup, apparmor, and all the other junk after every install. It's not like I install often, but should suse 11.5 or 12 roll out, I'd like it to be a snappy upgrade.

Programming :: Select() Call Does Not Detect Data In Pipe Between Parent And Child Program

Sep 23, 2009

i wanted to capture the stdout and stdin of a child process within a parent so that any output of child is sent to the parent and any input taken from the parent. code is simple enough and i have followed all code guidlines on the internet (some guidlines do differ also) my select call either hangs if i do not give a tmeout and with a timeout it returns 0 descriptors to be written to or read from:

below is the simple code for parent:

int main(void)
{
int outfd[2];
int infd[2];

[code].....

why select hangs without a timeout ... why can it not detect that the pipe is write ready i.e parent can write to it ... if it does not detect tha read pipe as having data...

Programming :: Clarification In The Select System Call?

Dec 8, 2010

I have a process that forks, where the childs puts some data of random size and exits while the parent should get the data and does some manipulation.. here I have used a pipe for child to write the data and parent to read the data.. Child simply dumps the data, and the data is of any size even child and parent doesnt know.
I have used select in the parent to see whether there is any data coming on the reading end of the pipe.. if there is a data.. I copy into a buffer.. Im reading the data continusly when the child exits after closing the writing end of pipe. Parent gets blocked on the read part But my question is how parent know the other of pipe is closed when using the select call. In otherwords.. while using select in readfds, how would i know the other end has closed the pipe..

This all works fine, except that on occasions when I want to boot Windows I have to plug in a keyboard and monitor just to select Windows in the initial grub boot screen. I'm wondering if there is an easier way to do this ? I don't mind if I have to boot Linux first, I just want to be able to reboot into Windows occasionally without having to plug in any peripherals.

Fedora :: When Do "start > Computer > System Settings > About Me" And Try To Type In Password Get The Following Error?

Jul 17, 2009

I just installed Fedora 11 (KDE) off of the Live boot CD. I made a really simple password when I was installing, but later I decided to make up a much tougher version of it. When I do "start > computer > system settings > about me" and try to type in my password I get the following error:"BAD PASSWORD: is too similar to the old one BAD PASSWORD: is too similar to the old one BAD PASSWORD: is too similar to the old one passwd:Have exhausted maximum number of retries for service"This is weird because it seems like the system thinks I made three attempts, while I only tried once. Does anyone know what is going on? By the way I don't know why it thinks my password is too similar, It only has 3 of the same letters out of 8 Also, this is my home computer, why does fedora restrict me from a similar password? It should just warn me about it but then let me do it.
