Ubuntu Multimedia :: Cannot Select Digital Stereo Output On Nvidia Audio
Jul 27, 2010
I've done a search on google and on here regarding my issue and I couldn't see anything.
I have the following audio device;
Code:
00:10.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio (rev a2)
At the moment I have it playing through Analog Stereo Output. (See attached image)
The sound is mostly flawless and I haven't been having troubles with it.
But, because I play audio through my logitech speakers (2 speakers, 1 subwoofer) I should be able to get digital stereo sound shouldn't I?
From the drop down box of the attached image there are two options for Digital Stereo;
Digital Stereo Duplex IEC958
Digital Stereo IEC958 Output + Analog Stereo Input
None of them work for me. Even if I do a restart, I get no sound from Rhythmbox or Firefox.
I use the pulseaudio sound server and I have the PulseAudio device chooser installed. When I had the Digital Stereo Duplex IEC958 selected I used the Volume Meter playback to see if there was any sound coming through. Both left and right showed activity but nothing came through the speakers.
After some fudging around, I managed to get my 64-bit karmic install to output sound digitally to my amplifier. So far, so good. The amplifier indicates a sample rate of 44.1KHz, while it is capable of 48KHz (higher sample rate would be better, i assume). Also, more annoying, it indicates no signal when no applications are producing sounds, causing it to miss the first second of output when I unpause my music. Windows 7 outputs everything as 48KHz, apparently also outputting silence as the light doesn't blink when i pause a media player.
The question then being: How do I override the default sample rate of digital audio output (if this is even possible, googling suggested that this might be overridden by applications); How do I make my sound driver output silence when no application is outputting sound.

I am interested in finding out the best way to get my audio to work from HDMI through my NVIDIA card.
[code]....
I don't get an option for HDMI. Here is the interesting part. The sounds work sometimes but not all the times. Most of the time the sound works on the OS default sounds but wont work for movies, streaming and music. I am running pulseaudio. I am new to setting this audio up. The headphones work fine.
For X-Mas I got myself a nice little nettop running off an ION motherboard. how to enable HDMI audio output, but got it to work. I've realized that when I'm in XBMC (which is admittedly the only place I watch movies) certain sounds like gunshots will be extremely louder than something like dialog. My friend believes that I should mess around with the channels (to fake the center channel from the left and right) I don't want to threaten Linux, how lightweight I can make it which is critical to an HTPC, but considering XBMC just got a Netflix addon
Ubuntu 11.04, with Myth 0.24 and XBMC 10.1. Hardware is an Asus P8H67-M Pro mobo which I bought specifically because it boasts an optical output, which I need to send 5.1 sound to my receiver.
My plan is to set up MythTV for watching TV, and have it send stereo sound directly to the TV via HDMI. This part is working fine.
And then set up XBMC to play my collection of ripped and recorded video, with the sound always going via optical spdif to the receiver. I did have this working on a prototype (different mobo) but now I have my "final" hardware I can't get this bit to go.
The issue seems to be that the OS is only seeing the Optical output as a stereo device - for example if I go System Settings - Sound I can see two hardware devices - "Digital Stereo HDMI" and "Digital Stereo Duplex (IEC95"
I'm new to this area of Linux, so would really appreciate some pointers - I've spent the last couple of hours reading immensely long threads and not getting any wiser! code...
I have an issue with the voice channel on certain MKV fikles being really low compared to the music and sound effects. I've found an explanation and solution for Windows for this, but nothing for linux.

how to get the same kind of result in smplayer or xine or VLC? For info, playback is fine through headphones - no channel imbalance.
I am sure that this is very simple but I have installed sound juicer and the gstreamer plug ins. The problem is i still cannot select MP3 as an output output option
I am at the end of my tether in trying to get sound setup on my Ubuntu installation. I have tried many different 'fixes' that people have suggested, but none seem to work!
My setup is as follows: > HP Proliant Microserver > Ubuntu 10.10 > Zotac GT210 card > HDMI from GFX card to AV amp > 5GB Ram
What I want to be able to do is:
> Play music from FLAC files I have ripped in either stereo or sudo 5.1 > Play DVD iso files that I have ripped in the audio format found on the original discs (DTS etc)
I have managed to get sound working before, but only in stereo and I couldn't get it working in XBMC (not the sound from the main movie I chose anyway). I have since completely broken the sound after trying various things found on the interweb and cannot get it back.
Alright so I just upgraded my 11.3 x64 to 11.4 using zypper dup and have now lost the ability to play digital output 5.1. Before doing the upgrade I was running alsa rather than phonon but apparently the upgrade decided to enable phonon, and I no longer show digital surround output. The soundcard I have is a CM8738 and I am using the coaxial output on it hooked into my receiver. In system settings->multimedia->phonon->speaker setup the soundcard shows and I have the ability to select different profiles.
However the digital output settings only show stereo and the sound output device the only one listed is CM8738 Digital Stereo (IEC958). I have selections for analog 5.1 and analog 7.1 but neither put anything out of the digital connection. As I said I was running alsa before and was able to do straight digital pass through which allowed my receiver to do the decoding and use all of my channels. How can I setup phonon to use digital passthrough, or switch back to alsa and get that setup again.
I still can not get HDMI audio workign on my zotac.. there is a lot of post that talk about it here but i can not seam to get any of them to work, and may are pre mavrick...
I made a sim post a while back about ubuntu but no one replied....
I am no truing xubuntu but still no luck
Like there is this post but it is from 2009... so all the inputs are wrong.. [URL]
I am using a fresh install of xubuntu off the official desktop ISO from the xubuntu site. All i have done is install, activate the NVIDIA hardware drivers, reboot, then download and apply the 150 or so updates though the update manager.

Running 10.10 and win 7 on my HP dv6-2150us laptop and I'm having a few issues.
First how do I get HDMI audio output to my TV? I think I have just a integrated Intel graphics card. It works fine in windows but I can't seem to get it to work in Ubuntu. I tried searching but couldn't find anything pertaining to this issue.
I'm using a CAD u37 usb condenser microphone for some semi-pro voiceover work. My clients insist on stereo audio. On my windows machine, my mic works just fine, but it's not in very very good place for recording (a bit too echoey). So I thought I'd use my netbook running ubuntu.I can plug my mic in, and it does record sound, but there is no available sound profile that allows me to just have two-channels of input. Can I install a driver or edit a file somewhere that lets me have stereo input?
I installed Kubuntu 9.10 one week earlier and installed VLC player in it. But from that day VLC player is playing the video but not the audio. Also Banshee player is not playing any audio in Kubuntu.
Have you ever wanted to record a sound heard from your computer or website? If yes outRec is perfect for you. This simple but powerful application let you to record your sound card audio output easily in a few steps and save it in different kinds of formats like wav, mp3 or ogg.

To get it work you need to install the dependencies with:
I am attempting to connect a bluetooth headset to a Telex Intercom System. I can connect my bluetooth headset to Ubuntu and use the microphone and the speaker perfectly. There are no problems with the Line-In or the Line-Out.
Is there any way to connect the BT-Microphone to the Line-Out while connecting the Line-In to the BT-Speaker?
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx. I am using the laptop to play video files and view it on TV using HDMI output. No problems. Requirement: to play simultaneously a different media file and be able to listen through say headphone / laptop speakers. While a movie audio is only heard on TV, other audio is heard only on laptop speaker.
On an Asrock ION 330HT-BD box Im running Ubuntu 9.10 (2.6.31-17-generic) with the nVidia driver 185.18.36. The Asrock box uses the nVidia ION chip and the nVidia driver appears to be working without any problems.
My problem is, that I what to use the box as a MythTV frontend with an (old) SD Plasma screen as display, which have a native resolution of 852 x 480 and I cant get the box to output a 852 x 480 signal. The Plasma is connected with a HDMI -> DVI cable. No matter what settings I have tried in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, the box keeps outputting a 1024 x 768 (or higher) signal
Questions:
1) Is the nVidia ION chip capable of outputting a 852 x 480 signal?
2) If Yes to above, how do I configure my xorg.conf file?
I have a StarTech USB audio adapter which I have been unable to get output from in Suse. Pavucontrol allows me to adjust the output to this device, and even shows some signal when playing media. However, no output makes it to the headset/speaker jack of the USB device. There does not appear to be any issues with playing media to the internal sound card & speakers of the computer. I booted up a Live Ubuntu disk, the device was recognized, and output made it with no problem. This leads me to discount a hardware problem. I'm running Suse 11.4 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T420s.
I currently have my desktop setup with two displays, one of them being my living room tv that I run Boxee on. My problem is that all the audio runs through the same speakers preventing me from listening to music or gaming at the same time as when Boxee is in use.
I would like to know if it's possible to split the audio so that an application of my choosing only outputs sound through my headphones. I was thinking it would be possible with some of the controls in pulse, but if it is I cannot figure it out.
My friend has following configuration Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz 256 MB DDR RAM Western Digital WD1600AVJS-63WNA0 hard disk PM8M-VHMS7104 VER 3.0 motherboard The motherboard has Realtek sound card built in but there is no sound output. He is using Ubuntu 9.10.
Is it possible to convert a 2.1 channel mp3 or any video file to get a respective 5.1 file permanently so I could play them on external music system which is 5.1 speaker system. Any sites where i can usually songs n video with 5.1 channel.
I've seen a lot of threads on this issue and combed through most of them trying to diagnose my problem and I've gotten REALLY close but with no complete success yet.I have a nVidia GeForce GTX 465 and I'm running HDMI out to my monitor. I have video but no audio. I can see the device in the Hardware tab of Sound Preferences but for the life of me I can't get it to play any audio (aside from testing with white noise).Output from aplay -l:
Code: *** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC892 Analog [ALC892 Analog]
script which adjusts my NVIDIA settings to HDMI and also my Audio output to my digital output. I feel its quite a lot of clicking to get my signal to my LCD.So I hope somebody already had this idea and can give me the script or can assist me in writing it myself. I think its not a complicated script. i guess its only 2 lines. But i am not exactly a pro in Ubuntu..So as i said i have a NVIDIA graphic cardand aplay -l shows
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC1200 Analog [ALC1200 Analog] Subdevices: 1/1
I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed but the sound is way below normal.. Pulse-audio just doesn't give enough output.. Max output is just average... I have a 945 Intel chipset..
I am currently trying to start doing some screen casting and having a problem with audio recording in gtk-recordmydesktop. The problem is that I need to record both; my computers audio card output, and my mic input at the same time. As of now I am able to record one or the other.
