Mar 8, 2010I installed Debian lenny amd64 a couple days ago and I have only got a few things figured out thus far. I got libdvdcss, and adobe flash along with some neat little games and apps. Well I had no sound at all because I couldn't get my audigy ls working with lenny so I'm useing my onboard sound (a realtek). I changed all my sound options to ALC 880 Analog now I have sound for movies and mp3's but not in games or on the web (ie ....., farmville).

Jan 1, 2010I have just got an Nvidia GT240 card and have for the first time set up dual monitors (An LCD @ 1024x768 and a projector @ 1152x864) I have them set up as twinview so I can drap/drop between the two and run compiz across the two. My problem is in running some games (Hedgewars, Powermanga, I have no tomatoes) These games run full screen and currenlty span the two monitors which is not workable as they are not side by side and run different resolutions. How can I tweak these apps to run on only one monitor without altering the xorg.conf and losing the functions mentioned above? I have found a resolution setting in Hedgewars but it only give one option and does not allow me to overtype it.

May 9, 2010I had Ubuntu 9.10 .. upgraded to 10.04 LTS... i dunno if its the ati driver or what but when im on wine the games runs fine for a couple of minutes.. 5 to 10 maybe and then the whole system freezes.. cant close cant do anything... the mouse moves though .. and the sound keeps looping, thats if i use OGG on wine insted of ALSA... This looks like it should be on the wine segment but i dont think so... I mentioned wine cuz ATM wine is all i got on this pc as for games.... im downloading urban terror to see if it freezes too...
I remember that right after i finished installing ubuntu 9.10 i upgraded it right away to 10.04 without having the ati drivers installed, after the installation finished... the boot up logo from ubuntu with purple background was at its normal size as usual... But once i installed the drivers.. the ubuntu boot up logo or whatever its called went all BIG like if it was using another resolution, though once it finishes loading, the resolution goes back to normal when in login screen and desktop.
HOw do i remove the drivers completely? do i have to restart after removing them so i can install new drivers? should i use propietary drivers from amd site or the one found by system--- hardware drivers??? why cant i find envy at synaptics?

Dec 2, 2010I am not a programmer or a game developer. I would even use the term "computer geek" very loosely cause any problems I have I google and usually find the solution here. That being said I am not sure the proper location for this discussion and I am not an expert on the subject but I ran across an article by a game developer who ported to Linux and commented as to why more developers don't. [URL]. Before all sorts of flaming responses get written i would like to say that Linux
(A) does need more games
(B) developers obviously have a reason for not porting
(C) If you ever want that to happen we need to turn reasons against into reasons for.
I know I am not a programmer and don't know a whole lot about Linux but I read programmer's talking about problems with too many distro's and too many different window systems etc., a lot. would it be possible to create a front-end that would act like a router for games, like the game puts out audio and the front end sends it to alsa it puts out video and the front end sends it to the nvidia driver. something where how it talks to gnome or kde or any other window manager and any other distro is different but how it talks to the game is always the same. If the answer to what I have said is no how could this problem be solved how could a developer create software that could be installed no problems on various platforms without them creating 100's of different versions of the game. One package one installer no mess. Linux is so incredibly stable there must be a way for it to be easier to write a game for Linux then for windows.

Jun 2, 2011i tried to download several games for lubuntu, but some of them are running badly, and slow the system down, although they are not very large one of them is just 100MB, other one was even much less than that. i have pentium 4, 512 ram 128 MB built in video card PC.

Jul 26, 2011I recently changed from Gentoo to Debian Squeeze. All went fine but I have an ALSA issue. I have an AMD Athlon II X4 board with a Nvidia (Realtek) sound chip. After installing I got a lot of "no such device" errors, so I installed the Realtek driver the Debian way and the errors vanished. I could successful run alsactl init and alsamixer.
At this point there is no sound neither in games nor system. alsaplay says (on the screen) that it is playing a wav file but there is no sound. My test ''dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/dsp'' complains "/dev/dsp : no such file or directory". Well, all clear. modprobing the snd-*-oss modules brings sound alive but I have to do this after every restart. I have no clue how to make this persistent the Debian way.

Software :: Good Paint Program On System Other Than Kolourpaint?
Jul 29, 2010Is there any good paint program on Linux, besides kolourpaint which is KDE and thus brings an awful lot of baggage into non-KDE systems?
(This is mainly with my lubuntu-on-USB in mind. The 300MB for kolourpaint and all its dependencies is not acceptable when there's only 4GB for the whole OS)
I can't stand mtPaint, it behaves very unlike most applications and I'm unable to figure how to do even simple tasks like colour picking or resizing a selection. GIMP is good but it's complex and overkill for simple tasks. Anything else?
