Debian Hardware :: ALSA Sound Not Persistent In Games Or System

Jul 26, 2011

I recently changed from Gentoo to Debian Squeeze. All went fine but I have an ALSA issue. I have an AMD Athlon II X4 board with a Nvidia (Realtek) sound chip. After installing I got a lot of "no such device" errors, so I installed the Realtek driver the Debian way and the errors vanished. I could successful run alsactl init and alsamixer.

At this point there is no sound neither in games nor system. alsaplay says (on the screen) that it is playing a wav file but there is no sound. My test ''dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/dsp'' complains "/dev/dsp : no such file or directory". Well, all clear. modprobing the snd-*-oss modules brings sound alive but I have to do this after every restart. I have no clue how to make this persistent the Debian way.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound In Gnash - ALSA For Sound System

I'm running Kubuntu 9.10 X64, and am using ALSA for my sound. I have no trouble with sound: VLC, Adobe's Flash plugin, Java, etc. all work properly. When I run the Gnash standalone player, sound does not work at all.

When I run Gnash in a terminal, I get this:

Slackware :: Alsa / Kde4 Sound System Messing?

Jun 23, 2010

Slackware 13.1_64, everything works like a charm,BUTevery time my slackware boots up,the sound system changes from one device to another. So if I boot now, sound address is hw:1.0.
then if I reboot, the sound address becomes hw:0.0It's really annoying, because every time I have to re-run xmms and mplayer setup to get any sound! Also, if any program is playing audio (like xmms), other programs cannot play audio at the same time.ie: if I'm listening music with xmms then I try opening some video with mplayer or firefox/flash, I get no audio on this video....What's the deal with kde phonon? I thought it was supposed to be the new global sound system for kde4, like arts was for kde3

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Moving From ALSA To OSS - Waiting For Sound System To Respond

Oct 14, 2010

So, I followed the verbatim instructions from Alsa to OSS here:[url]

I did this in hopes of getting sound in Fusion 3.63 to work.

Now, when I try to go to System > Preferences > Sound, it just says "Waiting for sound system to respond" and just hangs there until I hit cancel.

Also, when I plug-in my headphones, it plays through the headphones AND the system speakers.

Debian Multimedia :: My Sound - ALSA Or Pulseaudio?

Jun 18, 2010

I am using a couple of Debian Distro (Sid and Lenny) add some Ubuntu into the mix. I made the switch because I was amazed and satisfied with Debian --> once installed, everything works. For me that's okay for o so many years now. I don't question a lot because it just works and I do my job on it satisfactorily. Namely programming the LAMP style programming. Lately I have been using Debian to communicate over the internet -- using Skype and Pidgin and other such things, not to mention listening to music, watching movies, just using the default applications when I originally install Debian.

Along the way, I need to configure something -- that is desktop related -- like the screen resolution of a new LCD monitor replacing the old one and such. Now about my sound -- I'm not touching it because it is working. But that is not the case always. Now I have a constant error -- it is irritating. Rhythmbox don't make a sound always when I have open a web browser (iceweasel, chrome, epiphany) and a site with multimedia object on it -- like a video or something. So how do I correct this? How do I know, too what I am using -- ALSA or Pulseaudio?

Debian Hardware :: ALSA - No Sound In Certain Apps

Nov 15, 2015

So I've got a new system on which I had to re-install Debian, and I've been trying to fix the sound today, but it doesn't seem to work... I've kept the same ALSA configuration (except a minor adjustment to the card number as this system appears to have two cards instead of one), but it doesn't seem to work as expected. I got this weird error while running an app that uses ALSA:

Code: Select allALSA sound driver initializing...
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1024:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave

In VLC it works fine, provided that I manually choose the right device under Audio -> Audio Device.here's my /etc/asound.conf:

Code: Select alldefaults.ctl.card 1

pcm.dsp {

Debian Installation :: Persistent Live Jessie System On 8GB USB Drive

Oct 28, 2015

I'm trying to create a persistent live Jessie system on my 8GB USB drive.

If that matters, I'm currently on an Arch Linux system, and I partly followed what's on the relative wiki (Pages Create a new MBR for a USB stick, Manually create a USB flash installation and Install Syslinux), plus a CrunchBang post explaining how to make a persistent live USB out of any Jessie-deriving distro (like their BunsenLabs Hydrogen).

The problem is, even if Debian boots up more than fine, the system isn't persistent at all.

Here's what I did (I know some passages are redundant, but still...):

Downloaded the Cinnamon flavor of Jessie via torrentErased the old MBR

Code: Select all# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb bs=512 count=1 && syncCreated a 1.1G W95 FAT32 (LBA) active partition and used the remaining space on a Linux partitionFormatted the first to FAT32 and labelled it "Debian64". Formatted the second to ext4 and labelled it "persistence"
Code: Select all# mkfs.vfat -n Debian64 /dev/sdb1
# mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdb2 -L persistence
Mounted the first partition and the iso

Debian Multimedia :: No Sound From ALSA - Softmodem Dead Too

Dec 17, 2010

In the process of trying to get the softmodem working, I finally attached speakers to this laptop and tried to play some sounds. Nothing but silence. Both the KDE system sounds and a stand-alone player (noatun) produce nothing. No error messages that I can find, either. (That might explain why the softmodem is dead, too...) I've run alsaconf several times, and even uninstalled and reinstalled ALSA. It thinks it is working, but is not. What sorts of things do I need to check to find where it isn't working?

Info: The motherboard is a FIC 3500W with the VIA P4M800 integrated chipset. This includes the VIA 8237 sound system, which is what ALSA detects and tries to use. The machine also has a Realtek ALC655 but I don't see any drivers for that in the lsmod output, so this is a possible source of the trouble.

Debian Hardware :: TV-Tuner With Alsa With Jessie No Sound

Jul 11, 2015

I've got a Leadtek TV2000 Expert tuner and it was connected with my soundcard on motherboard succesfully. Before many years it worked percectly with my early Ubuntu version 7.04 and 8.04 - that used the AUX for soundlevels in the alsamixer. In TVTIME I've get all my TV-channels but without sound...

Always when I run tvtime it sends me:

"mixer: Can't open device /dev/mixer, mixer volume and mute unavailable.
mixer: No such mixer channel 'aux', using channel 'line'."

I've got this in the .asoundrc file:

pcm.!dmix {
type dmix
ipc_key 1024
slave {
pcm "hw:0,0"
channels 6
period_size 1024

And everything works with sound - but tvtime can't...

Debian Hardware :: Alsa Mixer Selected But No Sound With Squeeze

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

Gnome volume control shows that HDA Intel(Alsa mixer) is selected and as a default the speaker is muted, if I unmute it, an infinite loop-like sound plays and no application seems to have access to the sound, I believe the correct module is installed by default, and the webcam does not work as well. Debian Multimedia :: Alsa, Pulseaudio, ION2 & HDMI Sound Output?

Apr 29, 2011

I have recently acquired a Lenovo Q150 machine and attempting to use it as a HTPC. I've been reading that with this platform a newer kernel is required to make wireless, sound and a few other tweaks work correctly--so I bumped up to testing repositories to upgrade to the 2.6.38 kernel.[URL]...

The audio on this device has been more than a pain. I'm currently using XBMC to play media on this device and after setting the outputs to custom: plughw:1,9 sound is played correctly. I found this out by using alsamixer, selecting the sound card with the F6 key (Nvidia 1) unmutting all outputs, quiting, and running speaker-test -D plughw:1,X where X is the sub-device from the output of aplay -l until sound could be heard from the receiver.

Now my problem is that applications like mplayer, and iceweasel won't output any sound. I'd prefer not to use the optical out on the device and would like to send sound over HDMI. Has anyone had any luck getting it to work as it should?

I've also installed pulseaudio, not too sure if this is really needed. I've also used module assistant before upgrading to compile alsa from source, it worked but i just decided to upgrade the kernel instead of dealing with m-a every time an update comes through. Ubuntu :: Games Started But Getting No Sound At All

Feb 24, 2010

I switched to Linux but I was, and still am a gamer, and I have been trying to get some of my favorites to run on Linux as well as find Linux native games. While this hasn't been hard, I have run into a sort of Brick wall. I'll get games to start, but there will be no sound at all. The game runs fine though. When I try to close the game, it crashes/freezes.

This has puzzled me because some games that display this bug now did not previously, and at first this only occurred on one game. Now it occurs on all games. I've checked around, found a few similar bugs, but the closest people seem to get to fixing it is "just uninstall pulseaudio and use something else". It only happens in games, music and other sound works fine.

As for specs, I must say I'm fairly ignorant of some things, but getting better, here is what I do know.
Mint 8
Nvidia graphics card (can't recall what model)

Ubuntu :: 10.10 - Sound While Playing Games Under WINE

Nov 1, 2010

I am having sound issues while playing some games under WINE. for this I will use World of Warcraft as it has options for different sound engines. The problem is that I will have sound running fine for a while after a fresh reboot. It will seem fine for a good half hour to an hour and then suddenly it will stop. It will still be present in the applications list in sound preferences listed as 'ALSA plug-in [wine-preloader]'. muting/unmuting and adjusting the slider has no effects. Enabling and disabling sound in the game also has no effects. Here is what I have tried thus far to try to remedy it:

tried all of the various sound options in winecfg (some simply don't produce any sound at all on a fresh reboot - OSS, for instance) tried with and without padsp tried the various sound engines in Config.wtf tried WINE from the Ubuntu repositories and the developer's PPA tried lowering the sample rate and the bits per sample in the audio tab of winecfg tried fiddling with the sound preferences applications controls I am not adventurous enough to try to install OSSv4 so that doesn't seem like an option for me. it is important to note that sounds not coming from WINE function as normal even while WINE is producing no sounds.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Is Intermittently Scratchy Or Crackling During Games?

Apr 13, 2010

It seems like it's mostly an issue with playing games. When I play certain 3D games, the audio may work for a little while, but will start getting scratching or full of static. Some times it's a lot, and other times it's just a little bit. Most times, the sound in the game will stop working after a short moment of static/scratchy sound. Then I am left with complete silence.I've seen on other posts that PCM volume may be turned up all the way. I wasn't sure what PCM was, but in the volume controls, I saw that you could adjust each individual application's volume. I assumed that this was PCM, as the game's volume was all the way up.I turned it down some, and I still got some static in the sound, and the sound still disappeared completely after a short time.
