a server at work has been accessed through the desktop environment as root. I know this is a risk and since I have never done it before I was wondering if there are any files created by the desktop that could compromise the system and how could I clean it up.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've worked exclusively in Windows. I can handle that.I've worked exclusively in DOS (a long time ago!). I can handle that.I've worked exclusively in Unix.I can handle that.Right now, I am developing a command-line (python) application on a Windows machine, testing it in a DOS box (i.e. Windows' Command prompt), and then deploying it to Linux, and running it with PuTTY.
I cannot handle that. My productivity drops dramatically when CTRL-C cuts in one window (Windows) and kills the process in another (DOS, Linux). My productivity drops dramatically when Enter copies the selection in one window (DOS), and deletes the selection in another (Windows), and runs the current half-edited command in the third (PuTTY).My productivity drops dramatically when I cannot hit Undo, Home or End.The Solution I am Seeking
An SSH/Bash command-line client that runs on Windows and, to the extent possible, uses all the standard Windows shortcuts (Cut, Copy, Paste, Undo, Home, End, Insert, Shift-Arrows, etc.) work on a bash command line. Bonus points if it puts the cursor between letters, rather than on them.Plus, an equivalent DOS command-line drop-in that runs on Windows, and provides the same interface.need to be special buttons to actually transfer CTRL codes (like CTRL-C) through in the cases I need them.I suspect the SSH client will need to be specific to a shell (so it knows when it is at the command prompt, and when it is inside a running app.)I know there are many SSH clients, but I am looking for advice for a particular need.PuTTY feels like an escape route for Unix programmers stuck on Windows. I am the opposite. Can anyone recommend one (or maybe a combination of an SSH client and an Command-Line replacement)?
Update: After seeing the early answers here, I turned my requirements into a blog article, which may give more background in the direction I am looking.
i have a centos 5.4 without desktop environment. i can only access certain system settings via browser (and of course console). i would like to encrypt some folders. but these folders are used by the system. can i encrypt them? will the system still be able to access these folders? if yes, how can i encrypt only through console or is there something web based software for this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedOut of curiosity, can you chainload a Linux system via a Windows executable within Windows at the ordinary desktop?Knowing windows there would be enough holes to write at any memory address without "permission", but can it be done with a humble executable? Or is Windows just too active, without the chance of nothing happening at any one pointo that everything can be exited cleanly non-existent?I'm not asking for a program or guide to do this and neither do I aim to do it. As I've stated it is all out of curiosity on whether or not some sort of protection is in place to stop this kind of thing
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm a student and I'm already able to access the university's Linux machines from Windows using a combination of Putty and Xwindows with Cygwin. The computers I'm ssh-ing into have Ubuntu on them. Is there a way to remote access them to get the entire desktop? Like having a virtual OS window, but be using a remotely accessed computer. Is there anyway to do this or should I just settle with the X11 forwarding through Putty? Thanks!
EDIT - Just wanted to mention that these are public lab computers so I can't just have myself logged in with a remote desktop set up and waiting. I'd need something that allows me to log in remotely as well on the server without needing to to change what's on the computer there.
I am looking for remote desktop software that will allow me to not only view this particular desktop from miles away but send files back and fourth between the two computers. any ideas?

Two recover modes and two ubuntu modes. Is this normal? Going to reboot and see if I can get a picture of it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have assembled an "old" PC I want to attach to my 32" Sony TV. Mainly for browsing, watching videos, playing casual games. Is there a special Desktop theme suited for big screen ? In other words: Big icons, big text? Not sure if Unity helps out here. I would be willing to install another desktop manager (e.g. XFCE, KDE) than Gnome if it provides such features. Firefox for examples supports increased font size for browsing. For shell I've played around with guake and font sizes around 20 pix. It just would be nice to have "enlarged" menu entries.

Now I know this is an Ubuntu forum, but my question is really for Linux distros in general. An obvious newbie to linux, I was just wondering if I could change the default desktop environment that comes with distros: for example Ubuntu comes with GNOME. There is a way to change that to something like, for example, xfce or Openbox right? Or are these environments set for each distro?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a shell I have written in C# for Windows. I have ported it over to Linux (Ubuntu) and it works well as an app running under Gnome.
What I would like to know is how to use the shell I have written instead of Gnome? What I want is a way of booting straight into my custom shell without the default desktop environment loading.
I am a different distribution Linux user but considering to install Ubuntu Server 9.10 to run my personal website.
Question about Ubuntu Server version - does it come with some desktop environment like Gnome or KDE? I would be running Ubuntu Server on my home machine so it would be a nice bonus if I could use it to browse internet or check email.
I know you can install the Kubuntu desktop in ubuntu via synaptic. But as many of you well know this also installs a whole bunch of KDE programs and such like. Is there a way just to install the desktop environment?

View 2 Replies View RelatedLast night I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 and ran into some problems. I can only work in the desktop GUI in safe mode, the regular Desktop environment loads up rarely. Here is some hardware info:
Toshiba Satellite L25-S1217
Intel Celeron 1.6 GHz
RAM 874 MiB
Available disk space 47.5 GiB
Now, here is the dmesg output....notice the errors at the bottom (Idon't know what they mean, but I suspect that xwindows is having trouble mounting)

I'm running a regular installation of Ubuntu 10.10 with Gnome.I would like to try LXDE and other desktop environment,BUT without installing the entire Lubuntu.Last time I tried something like that,I installed the kubuntu-desktop package which came with a ton of software I didn't want.I couldn't even remove it easily, so I followed a tutorial which made me remove some of the software I had BEFORE messing with KDE.So what I'm asking is simple-is there a standalone package that installs nothing but another desktop environment? I also want to be able to remove it with a simple apt-get remove.
